Before Sonic, Sega had Alex Kidd. This odd-looking character starred in a series of titles on the company's 8-bit Master System console (and a solitary 16-bit outing) before making way for the Blue Blur on the Mega Drive / Genesis, and the rest is history.
Alex has had minor roles in recent Sega games – including Sega Superstars Tennis – but he has been largely forgotten by modern players; a footnote in Sega's history.
Until now, that is. Merge Games has just revealed that it is remaking Alex Kid in Miracle World for PC and consoles, including the Switch. The game will not only give Alex a HD makeover, it will also give you the chance to play the game with the original Master System graphics.
Switch owners can already play the original game as part of M2's Sega Ages series.

Looks Nice!!!
A bit like the Lizardcube Remake of Wonderboy...
Sega should have had this as their big announcement over those Game Gear Minis...I love Mini consoles, and this is still way more exciting than those things to me...
Give me Alex Kidd in Shinobi World!!
But... As the article says, we already have it in Sega Ages... I would've preferred something like Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, a new adventure.
Woohoo! This is awesome! Keep them coming, Sega!!!
I had this on my Master System as a young lad, I used to love it. Remake looks nice, I have the sega ages version but I'll be double dipping for sure.
@Moroboshi876 The original is in Sega Ages. This remaster includes new, additional stages. Im sure Sega has plenty more surprises up their sleeve.
Yea I'll buy this, I had it built in to my master system 2 as a kid. Bought the M2 version, and would play new levels with updated graphics. A good nostalgia hit.
Ah yes, I too, love Alex Kidd in Mircale World
I was never a sega kid so have no experience with it but it does look pretty good.
@Oddball83 OK, but I mentioned the original because it turns out that the remake will allow to toggle between new and old graphics. And we already have old in Sega Ages.
Additional levels is nice, but I still would've preferred a whole new adventure.
I had this game preinstalled on the Master System II.
One of the very first games I ever played.
The chat on the Summer of Gaming stream right now is painful.
I remember playing Alex Kidd in that one massive collection that they made in the PS3/XBOX360 era.
Not a fan of the graphics. Something more natural would have been nice. I don't like this Shantea look. It looks somehow cheap to my eyes... Alex Kidd is great, though!
Nice! day 1 and hopefully the next wait won’t be that long!! more HD remakes please!!
Sega are the masters of regurgitation.
I have been yearning for a revival of Alex Kidd for some two decades now, but this is so uninspired and frankly butt-ugly (especially that hideous graphic of Alex Kidd with the hideously large mouth).
I'll probably still buy it for old time's sake (the new content and whatnot), but my expectations are virtually nonexistent, especially as I got stuck in the Ages port of Miracle World with its piss-poor design (and I couldn't rewind out of it).
Bwahaha. Played a lot of this on my Master System 2 , but truth be told, not a huge fan of the game. I still played it because you know, only had like 7 MS games or so back then. Just compared to Castle of Illusion, Sonic & Asterix, it just isn’t that great really.
I don’t like how they replaced Sega’s blue skies with background art; that stage loses a lot of contrast and color compared to the original.
I loved Alex Kidd in Miracle World and would definitely buy a remake.... if it didn't look as ugly as this.
Sold! I'm pleased even if it's not perfect. We didn't ask for it so it's cool how it turned out.
What's an Alex Kidd?
(I'm kidding. I know who he is. HE'S Sony's old mascot.)
How novel. However, one thing that was absolutely terrible in Alex Kidd were the boss battles.
Pure R.N.G. with R.P.S. games.
Wow SEGA are making a game that's NOT Sonic????? That's crazy.
Never played Alex kidd, but this looks pretty good, might pick it up
I still have this. It still holds up today. Replayed it again last year.
As much as I like seeing this and the wonder boy games getting these updates graphically I would much rather they were new games than just the older games like Streetsvof Rage 4 was.
The is pretty much the first proper video game I ever owned, it was on the Sega Master System, and it was actually a really great little game. Very happy to see it return with updated but still pixel-based visuals.
For those who have only played the continually re-released Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, I hear that Miracle World is much better.
Nice, but what I hope is something similiar to what happened with Wonder Boy: first a remake, then a brand new game.
Looks great, even better in motion
Why could Toki not have also included a Retro Mode like this ?
Wow. All I can say is "I'm so there."
@Darlinfan And it looks like we get the Master System version as well! That's gonna be great!
How does this compare to Enchanted Castle? I have beaten that game twice, and while I enjoy the platforming and charming world design, I find the rocks-paper-scissors mechanic extremely vexing (one of the best uses of the rewind function in the Genesis classics collection on Switch).
I absolutely LOVED the Wonder Boy remake on Switch. Beyond being simply gorgeous in remastered form and richly enjoyable substantively, the ability to flip back-and-forth was a real treat. So that functionality alone may be enough to draw me to the title. I appreciate those efforts to both preserve video game history while providing an enhanced experience to people revisiting the game or looking for more "polished" visuals.
That’s great! If only Sega would release the other Alex Kidd games (or a collection of the Alex Kidd games).
Wow. The original was the first video game I ever played. This is a day 1 purchase for me.
I think I'll be getting this on release. The Alex Kidd series was my jam as a kid and it introduced me to the world of Shinobi.
It looks like it'll be download only but if I can get this as a hard copy, then I will ☺️
the nightmare of many people became reality.
I didn't really like the Master System, and thought Alex Kidd was a bit naff. Can't quite get over watching the trailer thinking it looks ok lol.
Looks nice, glad SEGA is allowing these smaller studios to revive some of their classics. Pretty refreshing after seeing mostly Sonic and Yakuza from SEGA recently.
I have the SEGA AGES (and I had at Master System) and definitely I'll buy to play with my girl (she's not a gamer, but have nostalgia with Alex Kidd and I bought SEGA AGES to play with her)
Cool, never played this one. Here is hoping Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle comes as well. Janken bets!
Huh, NL reporting on a SEGA announcement that’s actually relevant to Nintendo? That’s new.
Alex Kidd? Getting a new game? And it looks GORGEOUS!
I'm guessing SEGA has the faces of all their franchises' main characters taped to a dart board, and when they decide to do something with someone that isn't Sonic, they throw a dart to decide who it will be. Fingers crossed they'll pin Vyse's eyepatch someday...
Fantastic that more Sega franchise is being revived, hopefully next they revived Revenge of Shinobi, Astal, Phantasy Star, Chakan, Eternal Champions, Alisia Dragon, Radiant Silvergun, Burning Ranger or Ranger-X, Ristar, Comix Zone, Skies of Arcadia, Golden Axe, Kolibri, Madworld, Billy Hatcher, Last Bronx, and Vectorman.
@KayFiOS actually this game started as a fan project a few years ago. A guess that SEGA Just made it official. I think it's a bit similar from Sonic Mania. There is an interview with the devs from 2 years ago that you can read here: https://acertainkindofgamer.com/2018/06/19/remake-alex-kidd-in-miracle-world-an-interview-with-the-devs-narehop-josyanf1/
Holy crap! I grew up on this game, love it so much.
Man, with Dragons Trap remake, Monsterboy, Panzer Dragoon remake, Streets of Rage 4 and now this, it's a great time to be an old school SEGA fan.
Please gods, let there be a physical release.
Ill get it for the new levels.
@thor27 That just makes it even more disappointing. SEGA didn't have any plans to bring back Alex Kidd on their own, but caught wind of a fan project and threw money at it. I'm... glad(?) they are doing anything related to the mascot whom Sonic smothered with a pillow, but if it means fans have to pick up SEGA's slack just for older IP's to get any sort of attention, well, I hope dedicated fans will find a way to bring games like Skies of Arcadia and Billy Hatcher back from the dead for SEGA to profit from once more...
Rival? Alex Kidd in Miracle World is better than the NES Mario titles /1990’s playground banter
@thor27 Cool to see you linked my article! I'm super glad this is coming out now, and officially too. It would explain the quiet Discord channel and relatively little news on the remake
If alex kid was such a rival for mario then how come i never heard of him until the Wii VC existed? What a lame better left in the past has been. Scratch that never was!
I gave him a chance. I really did. I heard all the praise when they started putting those games on the VC and i bought Alex kid in miracle world thinking maybe i missed something. Turns out it was one of my most regretted purchases and i never touched it again! Alex kid sucks! He sucked then and he'll suck now!
Oh and if he's a kid why does he look like a monkey?😒
@DWWM yeah am 34 and my grandma had it si used to play many years back. I loved the motorbike level! I dont think i got very far so i am gonna get sega ages if m2 did it. Thunderforce 4 is amazing can i just say! if you like shooters! So hard though! 😂👌
What a useless endeavor. The original game looks excellent and plays great. There was no need for a remake. Why didn't they make a sequel?
I can understand a remake of a game like Metroid 2 (Game Boy), which had great potential but turned out mediocre because of the hardware limitations. I can also understand remaking a game like Panzer Dragoon, which was great but relegated to a console that nobody has. But these remakes of 5-star games like "Alex Kidd in Miracle World" and "Wonderboy in the Dragon's Trap", which can be played extremely easily today, make no sense. Why would anyone buy them when they can play the prefectly good originals?
I really hope there's an option for 50Hz musics.....
This will be an insta-buy for me. Hopefully they make it a bit easier though...
The game could get some controls and physical improvements but I don't think that the new graphics look nice.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Has to type this as Nintendolife don’t like one word posts, so enjoy this, but appreciate the first word more, that’s my sentiment)
All I need now is a Space Harrier revival and my life would be complete
I remember playing the game on the master system, it was a nice little game, franchises been updated are usually very good ( are some games just been updated are good ), I will buy this.
Could be fun, but still those Rock-paper-scissors bosses? That's terrible!
