The world of Animal Crossing is a magical place where real-life humans can escape the hectic, depressing reality of the real world and enjoy a peaceful getaway full of cute critters and pretty music. Heck, somehow even doing the weeding feels like fun. But is it all too good to be true?
In a similar vein to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, where (spoiler alert!) the residents and places of Koholint Island turn out to simply be an illusion within the mind of the great Wind Fish, it would appear that some New Horizons residents are having something of an existential crisis.
When speaking to Beau, a deer islander, he'll reveal to you that there are "rumours" going around that "none of this is real", and that "the island is just a game". It's quite chilling when you really think about it.
Twitter user IAmGeorgia3 has captured the conversation in video form (although the tweet contains some colourful language). As such, we've also grabbed screenshots of the chat below:
Beau even has an explanation. It's hard to disagree with what he has to say.
He even has a little dig at Tom Nook (as if he doesn't have enough to deal with already).
"It's all so obvious! Our lives are fake," he says. Oh no.
Beau eventually reveals that he was actually joking all along, quickly returning to more usual islander speech. We're not convinced - he's definitely onto something here.
Enjoy island life while you can, folks. By the time another new game in the series comes along, the characters might have figured it all out.

Animal Crossing is real and all our lives are fake. I mean, this virus is just a glitch in the program. Back to sell Nook some more shells...
I smell a conspiracy...
Tom Nook was actually in so much debt, couldn't keep up with his payments, and lost his entire family as a result. It affected him so much that he tried to take his own life. Unfortunately, it just left him brain dead and in a coma, and now he's created a world in his mind where he's a debt collector, but is incredibly leniant with his debtors, and has given them an island to enjoy, creating a brand new family that cares for him again.
@RickD you mean the red pill? red bill is for the truth
i always thought the world of animal crossing is a dream world of the character
Lazy villagers (Beau is one of Lazy villager) might be tend to tell their fantasies too much.
Someone be sneaking in Red Pills. But who?
@Crimson_Ridley Great theory! 😆 Thanks for the laugh, much needed these days. Grim, I know, but dark humour is sometimes the best.
Explains all the cameras in trees...
Timetraveler alert. No way they have slopes unlocked yet playijg normally.
@Crimson_Ridley Why am I obsessed with this? I’ll never look at Nook the same way again.
Its just a fourth wall break joke where the game is poking fun at itself and others.
God I wish people would just see the common sense and stop trying to make something out of nothing.
@TheFatPlumber He's not actually trying to make something out of it, other than clickbait. It's just to get people to read it, not because he actually thinks there's some existential crisis.
Need to work on making 'White Rabbit' my town tune.
@TheFatPlumber Of course we get that, but let’s have some fun.
okay Morpheus
He brings up a good point about Nook. Lol
Why does she laugh like Muffet, though?
That's just "4th wall breaking", isn't it? And it's not the first time Nintendo did this.
@Crimson_Ridley Lol, this got me good! Reminds me of the 'no more game overs' Mario Odyssey post.
This theory is given some credence by the fact that Gulliver mentions the windfish, this evoking the idea of it all being a dream. When he washed up on my shore for the second time he said 'verily it is on the nature of dreams to end' and said that some fish said it to him
That is just too awesome!
I was playing earlier and thought the moon looked like Earth. Could the game be on the moon. I mean the curviture of the place is kind of small.
4th Wall: Owwww!
Welcome to Camp!
so, funny, but some animals in the game have done that before in older versions of animal crossing. i have seen one of the animals do this in the GameCube version of the game.
same skit and everything but in the newer version the dialog is slightly different and is much more fun to watch over and over again. (much more of a panic. yes. yes.)
@RPGamer It also has a new rival for games involving living on an island with a talking animal in charge who gives morning announcements.
@Crimson_Ridley If he's braindead, how did he create anything in his mind?
@MBII Damn, foiled by logic! Touché, my friend! 😂
@Crimson_Ridley It was a cool concept though
first links awakening and now this
