The Castlevania animated series on Netflix has been a highlight in terms of game-themed TV shows or films on the streaming platform, a mature and stylised take on the IP. However, series 4 — which has been live for a little while — was said to be the last in that run. Well, it was the last season in that run, but the same team is now working on a new series that takes in a different era and new leading characters.
The previously rumoured new series will primarily feature Richter Belmont and Maria Renard, and intriguingly will take place in 1792 France against the backdrop of the country's revolution.
That was a pretty cool announcement as part of the game-themed episode of Netflix Geeked Week; are you looking forward to the new season?

Zelda was canceled so they continued with Castlevania!
This series is basically my childhood dream come true, and it is so much more awesome than it has any right being!
I just hope that Konami capitalized on this with a REAL Castlevania revival! It’s been far too long, and it deserves the Mega Man 9 treatment!
So, it was the last season for those characters then?
Good news. Loved the netflix series
OH HELL YEAH
THE BEST BELMONT IS COMING
So glad to hear that the Castlevania anime will continue even as a separate series! @BispoSnake Maybe Alucard will make an appearance. My Castlvania knowledge isn't the greatest, but I'm sure Richter and Alucard are in at least one of the games together
Sounds like Maria and Richter could suggest the Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night storyline, but not sure about the setting and time period
Oh cool. Rondo of Blood is my fav of the classic style Castlevanias.
Oh wow this is cool.
@DrJoson Check out the storyline for Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night - Maria, Richter, and Alucard are there. Alucard went into a deep sleep and awoke years later.
Since it’s a new series how about dropping the tryhard edge and cargo cult MCU banter.
Makes sense, can't wait!
Richter is my LEAST favorite Belmont but I will watch it! I was hoping for Julius Belmont or the Morris & Lecarde families!
@Zuljaras Considering what Richter's actions end up causing in terms of the Vampire Killer whip itself I can't imagine Morris and Lecarde are too far off now
If or when they end up introducing Soma Cruz I imagine that's when we'll probably get the Julius story and the War of 1999
Oh yeah that's the guy from smash
“The same team”? That including writer Warren Ellis?
@TheFrenchiestFry That is why I do not like Richter too much. He is the crew up of the Belmont family It not like he was like Soleil Belmont that was controlled by Dracula since he was a baby.
He was was controlled by a human mage to bring back Dracula
I loved it when I whipped his ass in Portrait of Ruin!
@gaga64 No, everyone but Warren. He was let go from the series after Season 4
@Zuljaras It'd actually be pretty cool if they adapted the Christopher Belmont story since the Game Boy games were very limited in that aspect but I found the whole son/father dynamic between him and Soleil to be a high point

@3RedTriangles Hey I am against such political things thrown in the mix for the sake of diversity but in that show it was ok. Hector in the games look like some emo that likes erotic-torture. This Hector is better.
The only thing I disliked was the Alucard threesome. It was unneeded and stupid.
The rest was fine.
no Warren Ellis, no Castlevania. But Im sure theyll find some scab to try and imitate his style. Hard Pass.
@3RedTriangles Were people seriously that bothered with race-swapping Isaac? He's already a pretty different character from his game incarnation and it's clear they weren't word for word adapting every character to be close to their game counterparts to seperate it from the established lore so I don't see how it's a problem
So they're skipping Simon's games alltogether? That's a bummer.
Hopefully we will get some characters that aren't vulgar cynics and some positive church characters. The church is is usually the good guys in the games. Especially since holy water has been shown to work in show.
@3RedTriangles Did we watch the same series? It wasn't Simon, but Trevor Belmont in the series. Additionally Sypha was always a sorceress. Now I'll give you, Ellis take on traditional religion is par for the course for his contempories and this age, so be it.
The story was never about the church's war against evil. There had always been tension between the church and the Belmonts. They call on the Belmonts to help get rid of Dracula, but they also fear and revile the Belmonts for their power. Ellis's series flushed that out a bit more, but definitely made the Church way more uglier in doing so.
Great news, I just started watching season 3 this week
@iuli Did we watch the same show? The only person who was sassier than Alucard was probably Trevor himself
Richter is the son of Trevor according to the image tweeted? That’s a pretty long jump forward to the French Revolution from the 15th century, ignoring Simon and Juste.
@DrJoson They were both in Symphony of the Night which means it makes sense they picked this era since they can bring back Alucard.
@Severian This takes place in 1792 which means Christopher, Simon, and Juste should have previously fought and defeated Dracula.
My guess is that least Simon will be referenced in the show much like Leon was.
Simon is such an important Belmont, it's hard to ignore him
Maria Renard? Despite the prior Castlevania series being stuck in my WA backlog, they have even more of my attention now. Sounds like the adaptations are moving closer by and/or into the IGA era.
Addressing some comments, though - it's not really "anime" unless there's something I don't know about its key staff.
@DrJoson Symphony of the Night. I assume they will do Rondo and then Symphony together (Like 3 and Curse of Darkness).
@mr_eman yeah my bad, i mixed names up, was chatting about Simon in another thread (and talking about how in Japan Trevor is named Ralph Belmondo lol)
@TheFrenchiestFry the race swapping itself isn't even the biggest annoyance with it, it's the hypocrisy with all the complaints about "colonisation in media" from the same people. and sassy comebacks are no substitute for character development, especially when you're supposed to be the son of a literal Devil fighting to right his father's wrongs using those same powers of darkness
@3RedTriangles Considering Alucard is known for forging camraderie with those he assists or allies with despite his reluctance towards the idea of attaching himself too much to humans I don't see how he couldn't have some form of sass or sarcasm to his personality given he's known for having a cold and bitter exterior, with only his actual emotional turmoil being brought to the surface when directly confronted by his father or those associated with him like the succubus who took the form of Lisa Tepes in SOTN. In fact this is actually greatly exemplified towards the end of Season 2 when they're within the castle itself and he goes to confront his father alone, since even in the games he feels completely responsible for the path Dracula chose and feels it's his sole duty to face him without the help of Sypha, Trevor, or later Maria and Richter
Netflix Alucard behaves a lot more in character than people realize imo. The only thing I found offputting in any form really was that whole threesome thing in Season 3

“ An all new series starring Richter Belmont (the son of Sypha and Trevor) and Maria Renard, set in France during the French Revolution, is currently in the works.”
@TheFrenchiestFry that’s what I thought. Have they announced his replacement?
@gaga64 No announcements on that yet
They've only confirmed that Sam Deats and Adam Deats are reprising their producer roles, but the showrunner is likely going to take some time to hire
There better be a conversation that opens with "Die, Monster!"
Wasn’t a follow up already been confirmed months back from the creator?
I hope this doesn’t become to mainstream. I would love to see a Resident Evil or Monster Hunter animated series. Definitely be cool and maybe get that Paul Anderson image away from the franchise. ☺️
I guess at this point it’s impossible to have a Lords of Shadow adaptation ... which makes me sad
Rondo of Blood is my favorite Castlevania game and they did a great job with their original series, I'm excited!
Ritcher is a favorite of mine. It’s gonna be great.
@fafonio Dracula Untold was like loose Lords of Shadow movie translation It even ended in modern times like Lords of Shadow 2.
@Zuljaras yeah... it copied the concept of LoS.... but it was a terrible movie 😑
@Severian I think it's a typo since there is no way Richter could be the son of Trevor outside of time travel.
Plus, would they skip the Belmonts who lived between Trevor and Richter, most notably Simon?
Big announcement of a new Castlevania series with a change of characters, and my first reaction is, what's going on with that beard?
Rondo of Blood is the best Castlevania ever and to see people reduce Richter as "the guy from Smash" is very sad. Not the biggest fan of Netflix Castlevania, but I'm VERY intrigued.
Thank God Warren Ellis isn't involved, I hope I never see his name in any type of media again.
Simon Belmont is the one that matters to the most to me.
Awesome that they’re continuing it with Richter, but I also want to see Simon at some point. He’s the one most of think of when we think of Castlevania.
@BanjoPickles I can’t agree more with everything you said. I would also love to see a Roguelike Castlevania game sometime!
@Caryslan I hope it is a typo, because it would mean that Richter is centuries old if not. So far, I haven’t seen any correction for that announcement.
I have never played the games (please don’t hate me) but watched ever second of that series, I loved it.
So glad they are carrying on but with different timeline
@Robzilla
That would be awesome! Here’s what I would love to see:
-Castlevania Collection 2: a collection containing Symphony of the Night, Castlevania 64, Legends, Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow.
-A new 2D Castlevania that is sprite based and has the same feel as Super IV, or Bloodlines.
-a new 3D entry.
-
Welp time to ruin yet another Belmont. Seriously guys just watch Hellsing Ultimate and Berserk '97 they are leagues better.
@TheFrenchiestFry I was hoping for Juste Belmont, IMO, the best but severely under served and unknown which is why i think it would be great to showcase belmonts with few game titles.
A magick weilding belmont descendant of Sypha.
I think this was the only Belmont able to weild Magick in their bloodline.
@PickledKong64 How did this show “ruin” anything? How high are your expectations?
No Warren Ellis...
@Robzilla very high, especially because Warren Ellis is anti-religion and hates the game series.
@scannerdarkly7 agreed. Another Belmont is going to become a cursing god-hating character.
