Last September, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa claimed the video game giant already had multiple 'visual content expansion projects' in the works.
At the time, it was thought he was referring to movies and/or possible television series. Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination's animated Mario movie is currently scheduled for release in 2022, so what might follow this?
While Furukawa wasn't willing to go into details, in a recent interview with Fast Company - dating back to the end of last month, he mentioned how Mario's movie debut could just be the start of what's to come in the world of animation.
"Animation, in general, is something that we [Nintendo] are looking into, and not just this franchise."
What other type of animations would you like to see from Nintendo? Zelda or Metroid? Leave your own thoughts down below.

Focus on your dying console that's desperately gasping for new first party games, you bunch of numbnuts!
I don't care what anyone says, a Zelda series would be epic. Doesn't even have to be based on any of the games. It's own original story based off of the legend and in the tone of the games would be awesome.
And none of that silent Link nonsense. Let the kid/man speak
A Metroid series would be fun to. Can see it in the style of the Aliens series. Or at least the first few movies.
@ImBackBB
99% of the movie team are not the people who make the Nintendo games
@ImBackBB Is the Switch really in that much trouble?
Ever since the Castlevania series happened I've wanted to see a kickass, atmospheric animated Metroid series with no dialogue save for found footage/audio.
NCU! Each big Nintendo Franchise gets a movie (or two) and it all leads into Smash Bros!
an animated DKC musical with the singers and songwriters of the DKC cartoon and competent scriptwriters would be amazing.
@UmbreonsPapa No, no it’s not. Not even close.
Look if this one turns out to do good, I'm up for more movie's like this, like maybe they can do legend of zelda movie, and have studio gilbi to animated (I can dream) or a horror them Luigi
Mansion movie, all the possibility's.
I want Tomm Moore to do a Zelda film. There, I said it.
@Col_e_h LOL. I know. I was being a bit cheeky to see if that particular commenter was ready to follow through with evidence to back up their claim.
@ImBackBB there's a pandemic going on. They'll go back to making more of your favoritete franchises when restrictions are lifted... 😉
Also, they're not the ones making the films...
@ImBackBB Not a bad comment, each week we see 1 release along with 13 shovel-ware games that belong on the iPhone App Store.
NINJA APPROVED
If they're all as crap as Illumination's is going to be then I don't want it.
Personally, a Zelda movie would have more depth. We already know what the Mario movie will be; save princess, beat bowser. A Mario movie would interest me if they did something off the beaten path, like Mario RPG. But I know we won’t see that, so I vote Zelda.
@UmbreonsPapa They are probably referencing the current release schedule of 14 iOS shovel-ware titles and then 1-2 actual good games/month, which can make the console feel on the dry side.
Please don't is all I can say. Keep it limited to self-published shorts, stay away from streaming service partnerships (Netflix, etc.), only do feature films for the odd Mario or Pokémon project (Pokémon is an IP that actually is somewhat underutilized in the film industry. Pokémon movies used to be international events, now they are barely TV movies. Use some of that Sword and Shield money that obviously isn't going to be spent on improving the mainline games anytime soon and put together some exciting non-live action anime-style Pokémon movies for theatrical release. And bring back Ash's original VA, and stop animating these things 100% digitally).
Let Disney be Disney, let Nintendo be Nintendo. Leave Zelda out of it; it is a good video game experience, it is not a cinematic experience. Mario does not need to be another Mickey Mouse.
Tbh I just want to get a solid release date and more info for the Mario movie. Trainwreck or not I am looking forward to see what they do after all it can't possibly be worse than the original. But I'd also love more Pikmin shorts.
This could be the start of the smash bros cinematic universe
I'm still waiting for the Star Fox anime, that intro was so good
Nintendo, how about you see if this one does well first, kay?
Have a feeling Furukawa is referring to Splatoon or Dragalia Lost.
Hm not sure more movies is exactly what I want from my favorite video game developer
@ImBackBB
Impressively wrong comment lol
@ImBackBB
Well excuuuuuuuse mee, Princess!
A Metroid movie would be fantastic, or maybe a short series, but knowing how modern stuff like this works, it would just get dragged out with a bunch of fluff into 76 episodes like it's KissyFur or something. Eek!
How about Faxanadu. Or a Kid Icarus saturday morning cartoon type series. That would be appropriately terrible, and think of all the innocent eggplants and their poor reputations. Or Milon's Secret Castle where the villain is an evil Bomberman. I'm full of great ideas!
@BloodNinja I've always thought it would be much more interesting to do a Mario Kart movie, rather than a straight-up Mario movie.
@Splodge See? That would be great. Anything but what we already know. A surprise from Mario would be nice, from time to time, for all us old folks that have played since the NES
I would love to an Xenoblade, Mario, Animal Crossing and The Legends of Zelda Anime Series.
Bring back the super show, live action segs included
Unpopular opinion.
Zelda would make a rubbish feature film / animation. I mean, Link is meant to represent yourself on an adventure. How does that translate to a medium where you just watch it without giving him his own character.
Xenoblade would be much more suitable.
A Fire Emblem movie would be cool, especially a PoR/RD movie series, but gonna be real... I don't trust them to do it right lol
@ImBackBB
Haha, it's not dying. If anything, its success is overwhelming.
And I mean that in both a good and bad way.
Anything that releases on switch seems to instantly become the most successful in the franchise it's from. I don't think a lot of these games deserve that extreme of success, because it takes away from what the previous "best" entries did that were amazing. Basically okaying a potential step down.
@ImBackBB,
The Switch will continue to sell well no matter what at this point, it has massive momentum and to potential customers there are loads of games.
To the people who have owned the console since launch I would agree we need some more first party output, but you have to take the global pandemic into account, as it would have had a massive impact.
Dying console seems a little over the top when you consider how well it's selling, and at this point nothing is gong to affect incremental sales of the console, apart from Nintendo not being able to produce enough units.
Let the creators of Naruro series please work on legend of zelda series. Works perfect with the sheika clans.
And link as the silent hero, less talk more action packed lol.
@BloodNinja,
Depends on what you view as a bad comment, the dying console part is so far from reality it's laughable.
@Mariotag,
Depends on your own personal point of view, I think many of the first party games are a step up in quality over their previous games, and hence their sales success is more than justified, also a lot of them review better as well.
How about a Mario Kart movie? Fast and Furious style. That would be something to see.
..yes I thought of this after seeing the YouTube video of Fast and Furious with Mario Kart sound.
@UmbreonsPapa
Totally agree with you.
Link as the silent Hero. And all those villages are perfect for an anime. Sheika clans with Jutsus (aka Naruto style)
I also think a smashbros anime series would be massive!!
A series that never ends. Every character in their own world until the smash tournament arrives. In that way the series can go on as long as they like.
Man if a serie like that ever happends l!
@The-Chosen-one smash bros was my first thought, the game intro is amazing and would make a great movie I think, it also means characters who don't speak in the games don't necessarily have to have dialogue in the film
Can’t wait for the sequel to ‘Mario saves Peach from Bowser’ called ‘Mario saves Peach from Bowser again’.
Wish they would focus their attention on making more games.
Hopefully these endeavors fail.
Well excuuuuse me, princess!
I'm personally in the market for a Fire Emblem movie. Preferably 2D, although the seeming tech blend of the latest games' cutscenes works, too.
@UmbreonsPapa in his universe, apparently yes.😏
@johnvboy I'm not necessarily thinking about the immediate prior games.
Like in the case of Super Mario Party. It's definitely a step up from some of the more recent Mario Party games, but imo it pales in comparison to early titles in the series, if only due to the scale of the game.
And, Paper Mario: The Origami King, I have yet to play it. I've heard good things about it, as well as some complaints. But I'd not see it holding its ground with the first three Paper Mario games. Yet because it sold a lot on switch, it's considered the "best".
Nintendo need to buy 1-3 movie studios and start making this stuff in house
They have the money and the momentum
@UmbreonsPapa No is not, quite the opposite. We already have a bunch of new ips coming plus even more indies and third parties. People are just so impatient =
@Ghostbusterluigi now youre talking, lol !!!=XD
Dreamwork's Dragons team should do Legend of Zelda.
Seems Netflix has had a much better run with publishing game related shows, and doing a rey good job, Nintendo could really use a partnership with them and hopefully have em as a streaming service on the switch too. =
While I've watched a few, I personally don't care for films or TV shows based off of videogames. Part of what makes videogames immersive is that the player is directly interacting with and experiencing the world the protagonists are in, whether it's fantastical or realistic. It's also why silent or faceless protagonists like Link or Master Chief are so iconic; the player can imagine their dialogue in their own words, and it could be anybody underneath that armor, respectively. Passive entertainment like films and TV show versions of videogames tend to miss the mark because they pull you out of that immersion and set you on rails, watching a forced narrative. And let's face it, when you've played countless hours in a given videogame's world, a two-hour film or TV series is at best redundant and typically has way too many jarring differences to really work.
In any case, I would prefer that Nintendo continue to focus primarily on their first-party console videogame development. People can try to deny that delving into mobile games, theme parks, and movies hasn't pulled any resources away from in-house game development, but there's no denying the widening gaps between new, original first-party releases (aka what we invest in consoles for) and a concerning and steady rise in the ratio of recycled titles from the Wii U and other legacy platforms. There was a changing of the guard after Satoru Iwata's death, and it brought with it a shift in corporate priorities; not all of them were necessarily positive from a gamer's standpoint.
Please NO Metroid movie or shows. Samus talked enough in "otherM" for a lifetime and we are lucky that didn't destroy Nintendo's best (imo) game series. Metroid is the BEST and also one of the most underused of Nintendo's assets...aside from Starfox and fzero...now those could absolutely be decent movies or shows but please save Samus for the gaming world
@ImBackBB Switch is not dying, for 26 consectitives months, he is the best selling hardware on USA and the best selling hardware on japan.
yay my dreams of a 3D or 2D CGI animated movie/TV series for Legend of Zelda/Metroid could be real.
Expectations set to low.
Despite most people here I actually have faith in this. Illumination isn’t that bad even if they’re no Pixar. Their style fits the Mushroom Kingdom I would say. And with Nintendo’s IPs it’s a wonder it has taken them this long to go down the big budget film route. I can see maybe follow ups with Donkey Kong and Splatoon over TLOZ.
@ImBackBB
Dying console?
Excuse moi?
@ImBackBB the 3DS?
I think a zelda movie that takes the timeline from Skyward sword to BOTW (Yes, Nintendo could take any of the timeline routes, BOTW is at the end of all of them) would be cool.
@ImBackBB
You mean the 3DS, right? The Switch's sales are shooting up like firework rockets and elytra! (Minecraft)
@Mariotag,
I don't see the Switch games as the best just because of sales, I just like the latest titles, and with the success of the Switch franchise game sales will always be high.
@ImBackBB Dying?
As always Nintendo comes a little late to the party...
I just want to see a Mother movie trilogy.
Given how long it’s taken them to move on this movie it’ll probably be another 20 years till we see the next so I’m not expecting much... I’m hoping to receive news on the next console soon though... just make it Switch 2 with backwards compatibility and we will be good.
"It's the New Super Mario Brothers Super Show!"
@ImBackBB : I’m sorry, I’m too busy wading thru all these Xbox and Sony exclusives… it’s like ducktails gold vault…
(Ahem)
@ImBackBB The console’s not dying. It’s a bit weak in terms of first party, but that’s it.
I would really like to see a Splatoon animated movie made. There's a lot of lore and action throughout the series that I think could make for a great movie if done right.
@ShreyasPFSVK Of course you would 😂
I'm starting to get scared that the Mario movie's gonna be bad...
All I want is a series based on Fire Emblem.
Not to be a contrarian or nothin', but I'd rather more Nintendo games than movies.
Remember those Pikmin shorts? What if we had one that was a length of a whole movie? I would be SO down for that.
@nessisonett Ok, where the heck did you find this? I want to know.
@screechums Great reference to a great show! I was going to leave “exuuuuuse me, Princess!” but I figured I’d scroll through the comments to see if someone beat me to it.
They cancelled a Zelda series because someone said the series was gonna be made on Netflix, and they want to produce more movies? yeah right, good luck with that one.
@UmbreonsPapa no it's not, people are just forgetting that the pandemic is still going on, and they even forget that Japan had to go back into lockdown
@WaluigiNumberOne the entire mario movie will be cgi, no real people or places
@Silly_G miyamoto wants so, you're basically saying that all the mario and Nintendo merchandise that aren't video games or video game accessories should stop being made
@AM7519 miyamoto is going to be a producer of the movie and he's making sure they stay true to everything in regards to the characters
@Sourcecode the movie is coming out next year, most likely holiday 2022
Nintendo isn't going to even actually consider making any of their other IPs into movies until after they see how well the mario movie does when it releases, if it doesn't do well they won't even bother with any more movies
@desireefan36 : I would raise no objection if they were mostly Japanese productions. I don't trust silver-spooned Hollywood not to infuse their garbage anti-morals into them, however subtle they may pretend to be.
@UmbreonsPapa Word. That only shows the little effort they need to make the console successful. But at least they are not on Electronic Arts' levels of no f***s given.
But they most definitely ramp up the game launches. But for once I'll give them the benefit of the doubt with the whole pandemic and all. Let's (once again) hope they do something about it soon. But I am not gonna lie I have so much stuff to play still...
@desireefan36 I know.
@WaluigiNumberOne it's because of that ***** live action super mario movie that made Nintendo not want their IPs made into movies
If I dont get a Netflix Punch-Out!! series heads are gonna roll! Or not, whatever, just Punch-Out!! something please.
Could you imagine if this Mario movie flopped? Dude, O for 2 on movies. The most recognized face/symbol/thing in the world, and they couldn't get the movie right, twice. That would suck, definitely a kick to the nuts for sure. There's no way that's gonna happen right? .....RIGHT!??!
I like the og Mario movie, nostalgia be damned. I thought it was a "super artsy" take on the game. Also, I eat paste and am an avid meth user. Jk, but seriously I like it.
Captain N reboot, series, movies, news paper comic, I dont care. Just do it! I'm done posting now. I swear!
Yeah no, I feel like people would eventually get tired of the over representation, like I am with
Marvel or anything Disney( They are everywhere!).
@ImBackBB Yeah. Nintendo is dying because they're making basically no money on the switch. Animal Crossing and pokemon both sold like 100 copies each. And I'm pretty sure no one bought mario 3d world at all.
Hopefully. I see a lot of potential for Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Kid Icarus as anime. Luigi's Mansion, Punch Out, Metroid as movies. I think Zelda and Star Fox could thrive as either.
Especially if they take inspiration from other sucessful watches like Fire Emblem learns from Game of Thrones. Zelda and Lord of the Rings, Metroid and Alien, Star Fox gets Star Wars, Animal Crossing to Winnie the Pooh, Punch Out and Rocky, Luigi's Mansion to Ghost Busters x Scooby Doo and so on.
Great, but idk...maybe focus on the games first. We need some new games later this year.
