Re: Review: Pathway - Competent XCOM-Style Combat, But Is That Enough?

CaptnDave

What?! I normally generally agree with the reviews here but I've played it on PC and I'd give this game an 8 to a 9 in terms of just how much I enjoy it! I really dig the Indiana Jones vibe and the mix of survival / old-school events that occur. It can also be enjoyed in small bits or larger sessions. And the price to me seems reasonable too. Hope you all enjoy it too!

Re: Feature: What Does Nintendo Have Planned For Zelda’s 35th Anniversary?

CaptnDave

There are some good ideas in the article but here's what I'd love to see:

1. Making the Breath of the Wild developers' 8-bit-style prototype into a full game would be awesome — and I love the idea said in the article of making it multiplayer in some way!

2. Remaking Zelda II with gameplay enhancements (including a longer sword — not the knife Link currently has in that game

Re: Nintendo Reveals Lots More Super Mario LEGO Expansion Sets And Blind Bags

CaptnDave

I hope people enjoy it but it still seems like something that will be played with once or twice and forgotten. If they added an actual board game element to it with challenges of skill (The tilting piranha plant one seemed like the only thing close) it might be interested — after all video game players like challenges of skill.

Re: Zelda, Sonic And Untitled Goose Game Sets Are Being Officially Reviewed By LEGO

CaptnDave

The castle is neat and all and kudos to the creator but how many people would actually buy it. A cooler lego set might be a great deku tree that opens up to show a couple dungeon rooms. Maybe it comes with Epona and Navi too.
If they build off the current electronic lego Mario, I would like to see a Zelda like dungeon board game, (kind of like the dungeon builder in Link's awakening) but where some rooms had a different kind of puzzle to solve. Hire me Lego and let's have some fun!

Re: Mario Makes For An Excellent First-Person Shooter, And You Can Play It For Free

CaptnDave

It's a real cool demo for sure and the maker should be commended. But it potentially violates some of Nintendo's thoughts on level design. For example, the first red coin is off the path in a way where there is no indication to the player that they may want to investigate there. When introducing a new idea, Nintendo traditionally prefers to hold the players hand in a low risk high chance of success manner. Then as the player becomes accustomed to the new feature they increase the challenge or iterate on it in a new way to keep the gameplay fresh. As he's doing this to help get a job, he may want to tweak the level to account for this. It is a fun tech demo though and I hope the best for him.

Re: LEGO Super Mario Officially Unveiled, Features Interactive Mario And Fan-Favourite Characters

CaptnDave

I like the technology idea as something creative. I think though that it would have been better as its own kind of new Lego board game. The issue I see with this potentially is that it isn't LEGO enough or Mario enough (in terms of the kind of play experience people might hope for) to satisfy either craving. Of course, this is just the impression from a short video. I hope the local LEGO store will offer a hands on demo to play with

Re: Work On Your Sums With MathLand, An Educational Quest Headed To Switch

CaptnDave

Looks interesting. I'm curious whether the difficulty of the gameplay, particularly the platforming sections, is well matched to the age range of the math skills. I'm very supportive of the general concept though and hope it does well in its goals. Perhaps the whole is better than the sum of its parts — haha (sorry that's the best math reference I could come up with

Re: Super Nintendo World News Is Imminent, Says Universal Japan

CaptnDave

I found it actually very anti-climatic by not showing hardly anything that park go-ers can actually do (other than wear a wristband — I'm sure it wasn't cheap to make the video which is a shame that the resources probably could have been better spent otherwise (at least in my opinion)

Re: Someone Has Already Offered $1.2 Million For The SNES PlayStation Prototype

CaptnDave

@StevenG I'm sorry but we don't live in a black and white world. Could I do better? Most assuredly. Almost everyone can. But I keep my personal spending well in check in comparison to the income I have, and I would argue that no level of income can justify the 1.2 million spent on this. You seem to imply the opposite end of the spectrum, that anyone can spend on whatever they want with no moral obligation to helping others in society and this is what I protest. Hopefully you recognize the need to give to those in need (even from a selfish perspective social issues effect us all directly or indirectly), and that spending a modest amount on oneself does not automatically make them a hypocrite. But again the issue here is that I feel that this is out of balance for the person spending the 1.2 million here.

Re: Magical 2D Platformer Enchanted Portals Accused Of Being A Cuphead Clone

CaptnDave

@PBandSmelly I agree. You can't own an art style. In fact Cuphead was based upon a previous popular animation style anyways, so the amount of anger some have seems unjustified. Especially when so many get excited when someone tries to make a Nintendo clone and get mad for Nintendo shutting them down. I for one am not a fan of this art style so I'll probably stay away from both this and Cuphead. But I hope people have fun with both.

Re: The Studios Behind Monster Boy Are Teaming Up Once More For An "Even More Ambitious Project"

CaptnDave

I was super excited for it originally and not only pre-ordered but also pre-ordered another copy as a gift for a friend. I really liked some aspects of Monster Boy and there was definitely a lot of care that went into it. But sadly for me there were parts that were too frustrating to be enjoyable — if the timer was just a little longer or a jump or other move didn't have to be so precise and left a little more room for error than it would have been really great, or there was some really weird combination of steps that was required with no real clue provided, especially irksome when it involved elements I thought were just background. I've gotten pretty far in the game (already a human again) but there have already been a few times when I basically stopped playing for a while because it wasn't enjoyable any longer — although I really wanted it to be. I am hopeful that perhaps they've heard other comments like this and this will make their next entry that much better. Looking forward though to see what they will come up with. I would add that I would have actually preferred a little less artistic polish in return for more tested gameplay thru the sections I mentioned above, but that's my opinion.

Re: Epic Is Adding Bots To Fortnite, To Help Players "Grow In Skill"

CaptnDave

Does anyone know if it is completely PvE with the bots or are there just bots mixed into the PvP. If its entirely PvE, especially if I can play on the same team with my friends I'm interested in this. Otherwise I'll continue to pass on Fortnight. My fellow gaming dads (and a couple moms too just don't have the time to ever "get good" at these kinds of games and hence we just don't play them at all to prevent getting frustrated. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help answer this for me.

Re: BurgerTime Party! Reimagines The Arcade Classic For Nintendo Switch This October

CaptnDave

Loved the original! The Intellivision version was the best! (Still eagerly awaiting the new Intellivision Amico next year!!!)

This looks like it could be fun. Not a fan of the artstyle (didn't like Cuphead's art style at all either).
Hope they also change the sound effect for walking over food slices — not sure I can "stomach" it repeatedly — hahaha ...okay I need more sleep.

Re: Nintendo Officially Unveils Ring Fit Adventure, An Exercised-Based Adventure Game

CaptnDave

$80 is far too much in my opinion. As I was watching the video I thought I would bite for $40, but I can have better other experiences most likely for $80. Plus I can get a year gym membership at Planet Fitness for $99 and meet people (and ironically get free pizza once a week). Or better yet get a state park pass for $60 to go hiking, or just use the free local exercise trail to be outside and meet people along the way too. But as I can't imagine though this game is going to down to $40 anytime soon (even on Black Friday sales) I hope many of you have fun with it.
