As fun as the battle royale genre is, it's rather frustrating when you spend minutes waiting for a game to start and get immediately eliminated by a veteran player the second you drop into the map. You've probably experienced something similar before in Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch.
To combat this, Epic is evening out the playing field across all platforms with the assistance of bots. Bots will work alongside a new and improved matchmaking system that aims to group players of similar skill levels together. As you get better, so should your opponents. Here's the rundown about bots:
They will behave similarly to normal players and will help provide a better path for players to grow in skill. Bots will work in conjunction with the new matchmaking system, and as your skill improves, you’ll face fewer Bots. Bots will not be present in Competitive playlists. This is another system that we will continue to update and iterate.
The improved matchmaking system is rolling out in the Version 10.40 update of Fortnite. Bots are expected to follow next season, which currently has no set launch date. Click here to view the latest Fortnite patch notes.

A Pratice mode would also be welcomed
The predators on high become the prey more easily. It would be like competitive Fortnite World Cup a lot more often for them.
This would be perfect for an offline mode you could play with friends
@RedderRugfish maybe the bots have have a 1 in 30 chance of doing nothing but dance the whole match.
So wait, if you play Duo or Squad mode, does that mean you might get paired up with bot players?
Also if you do get a bot on your team, how deep will the interaction be? Say it collects a ton of ammo while your low on ammo, will it drop ammo in front of you? If You get knocked down, will it prioritize reviving you or will it focus on the enemy team? How far away can the bot sense enemy players, and will it mark the enemy team upon sensing them like a hound dog? These are questions I need to know.
@mrmememan that’s what I want. A offline mode that is Seperate from online and competition.
....So a mode where the game will be even more boring. Coolz.
That is one of my main complaints with Fortnite, but while I wouldn't call myself good at the game, I'm no amateur with 1st or 3rd person shooters. My issue with the game is that you do end up waiting a rather long time to get into a match, then get unlucky because someone spots your and snipes you immediately like a minute or less in the game and then you have to sit and wait again.
I much prefer team or solo deathmatch, like in the older COD and Battlefield and Halo games, or turf war in Splatoon with winning and losing decided by score. Die, respawn, keep fighting, play the game. In Fortnite's battle royale mode, it's die, game over, wait 15 minutes for the next game.
@Heavyarms55 I have so many issues with this game, and the whole sniping thing was one of them. Other issues being that I've been running most of the time with no opponents around, and when I finally get some combat, dead in seconds. What irritates me the most is that I'd be able constantly and seemingly get headshots on people but absolutely no kills, yet I'm taken out instantly all the time.
I miss multiplayer bots from the early 2000's. Made it a low key affair to practice on your own.
Does anyone know if it is completely PvE with the bots or are there just bots mixed into the PvP. If its entirely PvE, especially if I can play on the same team with my friends I'm interested in this. Otherwise I'll continue to pass on Fortnight. My fellow gaming dads (and a couple moms too just don't have the time to ever "get good" at these kinds of games and hence we just don't play them at all to prevent getting frustrated. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help answer this for me.
Finally, so many 24/7 players killing me the second I land. Rank matching is essential in Fortnite, I wonder why it has never been there after 10,000 game updates.
@Chamillion205
If they did that they’d be losing the revenue stream of bullying players into blowing cash on cosmetics so they don’t look poor/default to other players.
They need a system like this on CTR... I'm an above average player, usually in top 3 or 4, but being there I get bombarded by the heavy hit items that always get given to 5th, 6th and 7th and screwed over by sneaky mine item placement by first or sometimes second. Also, those who aren't good enough to get at least gold relics in every track are so far behind thwy never stand a chance.
I got so excited from the headline as it had me thinking of Perfect Dark style Bots where I could play solo and drop in about 8 computer controlled bots (the bots were really good in Perfect Dark for N64) and play offline. Then I read the article and was so disappointed to learn that this is just another addition to the standard online multiplayer. This game did very little for me but I would have given it another shot with Perfect Dark style single player bot settings. Oh well.
An essential update. The game is virtually unplayable in its current form to newbies.
@BitLounger
2016 doom bots are like it, back in the days, I played the crap out of unreal tournament with bots
@Jonasty198460
I bet it helps that UT was actually good.
It is happy to know that you have introduced bots to Fortnite to help players in growing their skills. social media marketing kochi I am one of the addicted players of this game. I used to play it from its beginning. It is one of the interesting games I have ever played.
kid: I suck at fortnite sniff sniff cry. epic: the brutes are not good for you ok here is another robot but it will be in your match.
I imagine this is to keep lobbies full in the near future.
the ruined fortnite when they added slip streams and planes.
you're not supposed to be able to easily traverse the entire map.
the feeling when you drop and you're on your own was lost as soon as they added those
I know they took planes away - but there are way too many fast travelling options - the vibe of the game was killed
I noticed Tetris 99 has bot players in Invitcus mode. I guess not enough people have paid for the DLC. It’s a shame as Invictus starts at a higher speed so it’s definitely the more fun mode.
Not a fan of Fortnite, but this is some neat news. Maybe it could encourage other devs to do the same.
Aside from being good if you want to practice with """players""" of a similar skill rating (as I've never found matchmaking particularly good at this), it keeps the multiplayer playable for years to come.
Look at something like Splatoon. Once the online is gone, if the active playerbase fizzles out or popularity dies so they stop releasing sequels, the multiplayer for that will be just dead. That's it, it's gone, you're just never having access to that content again.
Meanwhile we can go back to old 90's-00's games where bots were commonplace with online being rare outside of PC (including PC actually) and you can at least get a bit of a taste of what the multiplayer was like. No, the bots won't be fantastic, they'll be predictable and they won't be using ""mechanics"" such as rocket jumping, but you can at least sort of go back and somewhat enjoy it. Modern games that are regularly without bots, that ain't happening. Once multiplayer is over, it's over.
Don't get me wrong but bots will behave like in PUBG mobile (or the new Combine mode in Fortnite), they move slow and aimlessly and their shoots do significantly less damage than normal players. They may use basic building techniques using not as many materials to not pressure other players and when they die they drop random loot
@SalvorHardin I think it would help to draw in more people that don’t always want to play with other people tho. I would play fortnite a lot more if I had an option to play offline with bots. It could even draw more people into playing online too. I use to play rocket league only offline. But now I play exclusively against other people, but only because I was able to play alone in the beginning.
what would be nice if we got an offline type mode where you can play 99 bots verses you so you can practice without anybody online. Plus to make it better have it like the offline mode but where you can play with 3 friends and against 94 bots to practice with.
@Chamillion205 I agree . Most games you have to practice by yourself and then move up I like what you were thinking.
hmmm, sounds like a good move, but make the bots easy to beat.
This is a good idea, but they'll need to make sure there's still a way for players to play without them when they want to.The very premise of "100 people dumped on an island to fight it out" kinda falls apart when you don't know if you placed 30th or 50th because of all the bots in play.
Well tbh I get 9 kill games regularly now so keep the bots in!
