Re: Video: We Can't Stop Buying Weird Nintendo Games

BinaryMessiah

I love living in the Seattle area as I have so many retro game stores near me. Literally one within walking distance from my house and about a dozen in a 20-mile radius. Then I can drive two hours to Portland and find another 6-8 stores in that area. I've built up my collection quite a bit over the last two years living here. I'm going to Sakura-con next month and they have a bunch of retro game booths with rare games they pull out of storage for lower than market value prices. I got some in 2019 and they're worth triple what I bought them for.

If anyone hasn't heard of it check out vgcollect.com. It's a great way to keep track of everything you have.

Re: Memory Pak: I Was Accidentally In The Perfect Place For The Nintendo Switch Launch Week

BinaryMessiah

I held off on the Switch until Christmas of 2017. Everyone knows there was nothing but the launch titles for the entire year. Nintendo was still fresh off the Wii U stink and it everyone was sitting back watching and somehow (probably only due to the strong launch lineup) systems kept selling all year round. I now have over 120 physical Switch games and it's more than my PS4 and Xbox One collection combined.

Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

BinaryMessiah

@HalBailman In the US at least I have never once seen a sale on a Switch console ever. They are $300 and the only way to get it cheaper is by buying one used. They sell out too fast here and are constantly sold out wherever you are. There's never a large stock. I might see a few sitting around at Target one day, and I mean literally two or three. I go back maybe two or three times and the shelves are empty. This was even pre-COVID. Nintendo consoles never sit on shelves in the US.

Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

BinaryMessiah

@Andigaming It's worth it if you play undocked mostly. If you play docked most of the OLED features won't be used. Just the LAN port on the dock. However the overall package is worth the upgrade. The screen isn't just upgraded to OLED, but it's nearly an inch bigger which most people don't realize. It's a 7" screen now. Absolutely stunning to look at. I can't go back to any other Switch now. The top buttons feel better and are more clicky and less mushy, the speakers are louder and more clear and located on the bottom instead of the back, and the battery lasts longer thanks to the OLED's better power management. Around 5 hours for most games. Plus that awesome new kickstand can't be beat. You can lay the Switch almost flat now.

Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

BinaryMessiah

@NerdNoiseRadio Well, I picked up an OLED to replace my V1 Switch a week ago and there's more than just a better screen. The screen is nearly an inch bigger, the better kickstand, better feeling top buttons, better and clearer speakers, a LAN port on the dock, and thanks to the OLED's better power management the battery lasts longer for most games. It's well worth the extra $50 for the entire package. If it was just a better screen? No. The near inch in size that we get is just amazing and I can't go back to even my Lite anymore.

Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

BinaryMessiah

@Laxeybobby Blow compressed air into it. It's better than nothing. Anyone who tells you that you shouldn't do that is an idiot. I've been doing this since the 90s on everything under the sun that has a fan and I've had zero problems. I've blown out literally hundreds, maybe even thousands at this point, with zero issues. It's all superstition.

Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

BinaryMessiah

So far we've bought a total 6 Switches since 2017 and they all work great. Two V1 models, three Lites, and just recently an OLED (wouldn't expect anything wrong in a single week after purchase). The V1 models did get Joycon drift sadly. Badly. We had to buy a whole new one after trying to install new thumbstick units from Amazon and they all didn't work. I later realized the fix was a thin piece of card stock UNDER the thumbstick unit as over time the metal plate bows outwards causing the drift (there's a YT video of someone thoroughly explaining this) and I highly believe this is the cause due to a cut-out needed in the shell that leaves a tiny gap. It's the only fix that's worked on three Joycons so I'm going to believe that's the cause until proven otherwise.

Sending in two Joycons to Nintendo started drifting a week after getting new ones. They don't actually fix them, but just swap out the thumbstick units that we can do ourselves with the same faulty ones and hope for the best so sending them in is useless.

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Raises The Question - How Much Do Janky Graphics Matter?

BinaryMessiah

Some people haven't speculated yet that Game Freak may not have the experience or knowledge on pushing the Switch hardware? Clearly, their engine needs a massive overhaul. I'm not sure if it's in-house or used from another Nintendo franchise, but this could also be the cause. The other issue might be due to time constraints. They may not have had time to upgrade the engine they used for Sword and Shield enough to make it look amazing. Look at what does look good. Terrain textures and water, but the characters look awful. The Pokemon look good, but then there are other inconsistencies everywhere. It seems like they ran out of time or something.

Re: Star Wars: KOTOR Is Receiving A Limited Run Games Physical Release On Switch

BinaryMessiah

@Medic_Alert Every website like LRG does this. They are only available for a certain amount of time or when a certain amount of copies sell out. It costs money to produce these things in bulk supply. It's not an artificial constraint. So, are they supposed to leave the window open...for a year? When the digital or regular physical copies are already out? They also need to tell the manufacturer a final amount so they don't just have units not moving. These guys aren't Activision or EA who can pump out a random amount of games and hope they all sell. Super Rare Games and Strictly Limited do the same thing. This is just a case of "I can't afford this right now so I'm mad and hate it". You have to understand how economics work. You can't just have a massive amount of product not moving because a few gamers are mad they can't afford it within the 4-6 weeks. We're used to standard pre-orders because the publishers have YEARS in advance to put a pre-order out because they know when their end date is. These are mostly games that have already been released. I have a friend who works for a company that does similar things like LRG does (not video games) and for a small company that has maybe a dozen employees or less they are at the mercy of the manufactures in China and their requirements.

Bethesda can send out 500,000 copies of the Doom Eternal collector's edition and hope half of those sell at full price a year in advance. A small company can't do that. They'd go bankrupt with a quarter of a million units just sitting unsold. Technically ALL pre-orders are for a limited time. Some games don't get announced until a few months before release. Why are we giving LRG a bunch of crap for the same thing?

Re: Activision Blizzard Employees Stage A Walkout Calling For CEO Bobby Kotick's Resignation

BinaryMessiah

@Jeronan That's a "sweep it under the rug" scenario. They SHOULD stop selling these games. Gamers can go a while without Activision games. Kotick won't step down from thousands of Blizzard employees screaming at his door then a few Tweets from developers won't do anything either. He doesn't care. Simple as that. Also, the developers wouldn't be losing jack. They get paid hourly and any money afterward goes to the publisher.

Re: Activision Blizzard Employees Stage A Walkout Calling For CEO Bobby Kotick's Resignation

BinaryMessiah

@Tobiaku There's nothing to prove and that would get dragged out and no one working at Blizzard can AFFORD the fees to do this. Sexual harassment and other abuse allegations are protected under federal laws and this would need to be investigated by an outside source and dealt with internally. Unless Kotick sues the accuser (which it would most likely get thrown out) it would stay internal with the company. I also don't understand why you're defending Kotick. Most people don't blindly accuse someone of these things in the work place. He is the head of the company and he simply needs to go. He refuses to address the issues the employees are complaining about, the state of California launched their own investigation, and he's still ignoring it all. He doesn't need protection or a court to hide behind. He simply needs to go based on numerous company policy violations alone.

Re: Activision Blizzard Employees Stage A Walkout Calling For CEO Bobby Kotick's Resignation

BinaryMessiah

@Pigeon I take it you've never worked a day in your life or haven't had the wonderful opportunity of being a minority in whatever industry you work in. This attitude is EXACTLY why these things keep happening. There are sexual harassment and various other laws that protect people for a reason. It never NEEDS to be proven in a work environment. If you get accused of sexually harassing or abusing a co-worker it's usually an automatic termination or at least your get put on leave until there's further investigation. These laws were made so companies take these things seriously and most people understand this and don't abuse the system. People fought for these laws for DECADES to protect workers and people like you come along dismissing it entirely because it's never happened to you. You're also comparing an internet comment vs. real-life. What planet do you live on? Most people don't just mindlessly acuse someone of these things even if they don't like them.

Re: Where To Buy Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl On Switch

BinaryMessiah

@UmbreonsPapa I have two as well. My oldest is 5 and he knew from 4 that things were too expensive or that he had to earn things. We now have five Switch's in the house (including his) and he got a Lite for his 5th birthday this year, but that's all he got and we told him it was expensive and it was a big gift and he understood.

Re: Star Wars: KOTOR Is Receiving A Limited Run Games Physical Release On Switch

BinaryMessiah

LRG isn't shady at all. I've pre-ordered maybe two dozen games through them and they are an indie publisher just like Super Rare Games or Strictly Limited Games. They just had more success over the last few years. 99% of their pre-orders are open for usually 4-6 weeks which is plenty of time to plan the purchase. You can also use PayPal's "Pay in 4" which allows you to pay in four payments over the course of two months. I have used this numerous times for more expensive pre-orders. These guys don't operate on a large massive scale and the funding for the productions is FROM the pre-orders which is why it takes months to get the game. You are essentially pre-ordering before the game is even being produced. They can only mass-produce on scales of 2,000-5,000 or even more depending on the type of game it is and what's included.

Honestly, the only people I see who are mad are the ones who can't afford this stuff which is fine. Just don't blame LRG or the developers for it. These releases are for the hardcore fans and the developers don't see a large enough market to produce half a million collector's editions for 90% of them to sit on shelves (or warehouses) and end up in thrift stores or massive discounts and lose millions doing so.

These are also strictly for physical game collectors. They might release a double pack of a game later, but not the collector's editions and they're always super high quality and worth the money, at least to me.

Re: Pre-Order Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes At My Nintendo Store For A Chance To Win Poké Ball Replicas

BinaryMessiah

@Astral-Grain Good points. I only pre-order when I know it's a well-established and trusted developer or franchise such as Mortal Kombat. I've pre-ordered every single game in the series since Deception and haven't been disappointed. Sure, the microtransaction thing was a little iffy with MK11, but they did fix it in the end. At least it was a full completed game. I only pre-order indie titles that have had tons of coverage or had Early Access coverage that was well received.

For example, Forza Horizon is a safe series to pre-order. They knock it out of the park sequel after sequel and it's usually, mostly, minor issues that get fixed in a few weeks. Other safe examples are Nintendo and Sony franchises.

I hope that this trend of unfinished games being released will end soon. They just get worse and worse and shake the entire industry and it seems no one learns. From Cyberpunk to Anthem to Destiny 2. Now with GTA Trilogy to Battlefield 2042 to Fallout 76 and Just Cause 4.

Re: Datamine Uncovers References To PS4 And PC In Switch Exclusive Shin Megami Tensei V

BinaryMessiah

In this day and age does exclusivity matter anymore? Most people have more than one game console, and the average gamer is now old enough to work and buy their own consoles. This was a big deal when we were all kids as our parents usually only bought us one console and one only for years. You have PS4 games on PC now...exclusivity almost means nothing anymore.

I have Persona 5 Royal Steelbook Edition on PS4 that I bought on day one that I haven't even touched yet, and will probably get Persona V on Switch. I never understood this weird loyalty to one system. I own every system to get the best of all worlds.

Re: Pre-Order Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes At My Nintendo Store For A Chance To Win Poké Ball Replicas

BinaryMessiah

@Astral-Grain And ten years ago people were complaining about that too. It's always something. No one's happy. Everybody was complaining about retail chain exclusive pre-order bonuses, pre-order bonuses in general that people got left out of who bought it on the street date. I've seen them all come and go. I also remember, before even THAT, that pre-ordering should include some sort of bonus or incentive and people were complaining how it's boring and pointless. We come full circle probably every decade on that subject.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

BinaryMessiah

There are so many comments here because so many people place value differently. I'm positive a vast majority of people downvoting that video and complaining here are subscribed right now and just don't want to admit it. Nintendo knows that people will buy their stuff whether they like it or not. Nostalgia is a heavy drug and the N64 is the biggest pill of them all. People fall head over heels for that system even if they don't own a single gaming console outside of the Switch. "I remember playing Mario Kart as a kid one time and it was fun" and that's enough to sub.

Peopl are also judging to harshly here as some people think the value is justified which is totally fine. It's not your job to judge someone else for liking a product. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Vote with your wallet. It's just sick the amount of people attacking someone's character just for thinking a service is worth it to them whether it's over priced or not. We've ALL paid for over priced goods. $45 pizzas, $8 coffees, $300 video game systems, and maybe even a $200 collector's edition that some might think is garbage. It's all subjective.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

BinaryMessiah

@SpaceboyScreams While what you're saying is OVERALL true, I highly doubt anyone is in poverty over subscriptions. Especially streaming or gaming-related. That's a bit of an over-exaggeration. I feel you're probably young yourself as you state "everyone who always eats out is poor" that's also not true at all. While it's not a WISE decision there are plenty of people who eat out a lot who are just fine financially. You're trying to tie a single action or spending habit to someone's entire living situation. I'm pretty well off myself and eat out more or less depending on what's going on in life. Some months I've spent $300 on eating out and some zero.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

BinaryMessiah

@TheRedComet And thus all the reasons you stated why the PS1 wiped the floor with the N64. Like I mentioned earlier, almost zero N64 games hold up today, but a vast majority of the PS1 games are very much playable and the variety is astonishing, even on Saturn. I have over 200 PS1 games and maybe 5 N64 games. People forget that nearly the entire library of the N64 was utter garbage.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

BinaryMessiah

@Caryslan It's an unpopular opinion but I totally agree. I own 200 PS1 games and....wait for it...

5 N64 games. Umm...yeah. The PS1 literally wiped the floor with the N64, but everyone just remembers Zelda, Mario, or StarFox and forgot that nearly THE ENTIRE N64 LIBRARY WAS UTTER CRAP.

It's the only retro system I don't pursue much. I have a broken N64 and never bothered buying another or getting it fixed. I don't emulate the games either. It's the only system I think about and remember just how awful the games were outside of the main Nintendo ones. I still frequently pull out my Saturn and PS1 and play games weekly on them. A lot of them hold up well today.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack' Trailer Is Now Its Most Disliked YouTube Video Ever

BinaryMessiah

My wife got excited seeing the Nintendo 64 "channel" go up and downloaded it. I waited on purpose for her to click on it and she saw the $80 price tag and said F--- That!. It's not worth it, to be honest, AND she had just pre-orderd the Animal Crossing DLC right before discovering that. Double whammy. I have a bar top Picade that can emulate Genesis games and a Genesis Mini, and any phone or PC can emulate N64 games just with a controller too. Just...yeah...maybe they should have added more games first.

The people outraged are also a small minority compared to the total Switch owners. Almost everyone I know who owns a Switch bought the NSO sub without hesitation.

Re: Random: Turns Out Dune's Paul Atreides Is One Of Us After All

BinaryMessiah

@Gamer83 Idol worship isn't pathetic. It can have a really positive impact. Having an idol can be a good thing just make sure that idol is DOING good things. I've had idols growing up, but usually, that whole thing ends in your teen years. People have had idols for hundreds of years. It's perfectly normal. Calling it pathetic is pathetic in and of itself.

Re: New Pokémon Shirts Show Off Designs For Charizard, Blastoise, And Venusaur

BinaryMessiah

@Harmonie It's literally "the beginning" of the series and the most iconic. You're reading way too much into this. EVERYONE knows who Bulbasaur, Pikachu, and Charmander are. The later generations outside of maybe Gen 3 just aren't as iconic. Sorry, but that's just the truth of it. They didn't have the impact that Gen I and II got during the Pokemon boom in the 90's. Unless you play the Pokemon games you would have no idea who any of the new generations are. My grandma knows who Squirtle is. That's the difference and that will never change. You had them on literally everything. Bus stops, commercials, the news, cereal, everywhere you turned they were on something back them for quite a few years. You're not going to see...Grookey on every shirt and bookmark from here to the ends of the Earth. It just isn't going to happen.

Re: Sony's Censors Strike As Switch Gets '20 Ladies' While PS4 Gets '20 Bunnies'

BinaryMessiah

@ZeeManCan Mmmm...yeah, you sound like a cry baby incel. Most of the "outrage mob" you talk about are mad usually for good reasons, but if you can't have your boobs you guys get mad. You either didn't grow up during the '90s or are too young to remember. The censorship is almost non-existent today and the government rarely if ever steps in. That was the issue back then was the government forcing companies to censor games which almost doesn't happen anymore. The fact that games like Mortal Kombat 11 and hardcore porn on Steam are even allowed today would explode the minds of parents 20 years ago. So you can get mad about some crappy 2D platformer hitting an algorithm or go fap to Senran Kagura freely in which you never would have seen the light of day 20 years ago.

Yeah...you're reading way too much into it and taking it way too seriously. Christ.
