Switch exclusive Shin Megami Tensei V contains references to PS4 and PC in its code, a datamine has revealed.
Features specific to PC, such as resolution settings, post-processing and texture quality have also been found. The GeForce Now leak from earlier this year made reference to the game coming to PC, despite Nvidia's insistence at the time that the leaked list was purely for "internal tracking and testing". It's worth noting that since the leak, several of the listed titles have been confirmed for release on PC.
While it began life on Nintendo systems, the Megami Tensei series has a long association with the PlayStation brand, thanks to entries such as Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne (which was recently remastered for modern systems, including Switch) and the spin-off Persona series.
"Shin Megami Tensei V is a modern masterpiece," is what we said in our review of the game. "It successfully delivers on all the aspects that have made the series thus far so popular with fans—namely through its high difficulty, heavy narrative themes, and expansive team-building options—while polishing up and tightening the weaker aspects."

If PlayStation gets this, we should get Persona 5
This will be a slap in the face of the nintendo switch exclusivity. Why treat the switch like it doesn't matter. If they try this so called acts then they should as well port over persona 5r to act as a leverage for the switch.
Wow i don't mind more people getting to play a good game is a good thing. Same logic they should bring all persona games to switch.
Better yet bring them all to Xbox
…Just me?
And the PS5 version will likely have all DLC on the disc too.
@YusseiWarrior3000 This is Atlus, not Squeenix. If it was made by Square, it would have been a cloud game (exclusive or not to the Switch)
The age of exclusive games is over, at this rate, only games made/published by Nintendo will stay on only one console family.
@YusseiWarrior3000 What has Atlus to do with Square?
@Pokester99 lol fanboyisim are you blind? People mad because the same company has been resisting for years not to bring the persona series (especially 5). And making fun of people by doing polls. But it immediately brings a newly released Switch exclusive to other consoles. And you asking why are people mad? Stop.
For all people saying Persona 5 needs to be ported to the Switch, I’m assuming Sony are paying to keep it exclusive for a good long while whereas Nintendo kinda don’t care too much so pay for the bare minimum exclusive time period. Just seems to be how they do things when looking at a lot of third party games.
@FragRed It's the hundredth time. The Persona series is not a Sony exclusive.
@Pokester99 One good argument against this, is that history showed multiple times that exclusive games sell consoles, it doesn't matter how powerful a console is if it doesn't have games, there's the concept of killer app, people buying hardware just to get exclusive software.
And when the console you own is selling more, it's good for you, when your console is selling well, it gets more games and lasts more in the market, and if your console fails in sales, it may end just like the Virtual Boy and the Dreamcast ended, Nintendo's consoles and portables need exclusives.
However, fanboys are often just just like Eric Cartman, they can't have fun with something if other people are also having.
This is the reason why I will not get Persona Strikers on Switch UNTIL Altus brings Persona 5 over. Just as I won’t get into the Trails of Cold Steel series until the first ones are ported over which they are. And for that game, it seems the stories are linked.
I don’t care for exclusivity. But I do care that I only have time for one console system. I won’t buy another just to get one or two games.
Tbh this wants me to stop playing the switch version as graphically it would beautiful on ps4/ps5 and run better, that glittering sand is giving me headaches.
If there's no full exclusive deal in place for SMT and does come to playstation/PC then I don't see why persona 5 should come to switch as leverage, atlus can put their games on whatever systems they want and make exclusivity deals as they see fit
This will almost certainly be an unpopular opinion but I'm just gonna come out and say it:
Switch owners simply haven't supported the games that Atlus have released this generation & sales of SMT V (Which is bloody excellent game by the way) are already weaker the P5, P5R & P5S in their respective first weeks.TMS#FE, Catherine Full body & SMT3HD have ALL underperformed on the console. Would it be cool to see P5 on the Switch? Hell yeah it would, however people aren't really giving atlus any incentive to do so when the sales of their games on the Switch have been so underwealming
This is fine. Anyone angry about Switch losing its exclusivity should at least be consoled by the fact that Atlus actually designed and built SMT V for Switch, rather than starting with a PS4 or PC build and then gimping it. Bit like MH Rise. This is a good thing.
And if SMT makes more money by hitting other platforms, then great. Keeps Atlus solvent and shores up the future of the series.
@JokerCK exactly, I couldn't have said it in a better way
@MrSquee TBF, all the Atlus games you mentioned are rereleases. Bit harsh to say Switch owners haven’t supported Atlus when SMT V is literally the first new game the developer has released on the platform. And comparing anything to a mainline Persona title is going to come off badly.
If Persona 5 had been re-released on Switch, I suspect it would sell more than Catherine and TMS#FE put together. But it still would be affected by the fact that it’s a re-release.
Edit: Oops - Persona 5 Strikers would be the first Atlus release. Sorry! But it was a dual platform musou title so, er, not for me. Switch sales were comparable to those on PS4, even though it was competing with stuff like Age of Calamity.
Dataminers also found references to Windows PC settings in the codebase of Metroid Dread, but nobody believes that Metroid Dread will be ported to PC.
SMTV may get ported to other platforms but these references in code mean nothing.
@MrSquee Has Atlus considered not porting over old or not-so -hot-titles to the switch and justify their sales as to why Switch players aren’t supporting them?
SMT3HD sounds like a nightmare of a game when contemporary conveniences are concerned. And I have all SMT game and spin-off on the 3DS. And TMS#FE has no English voiceovers which will turn some off. It’s like EA using FIFA sales on the Switch to justify why they aren’t porting other games over.
Edit: Forgot to note that there is still Black Friday and I am sure many are waiting for sales then to decide on their purchases. Not to mention Pokemon….
thanks god for the PC version, if it comes out I will throw the Switch version out of my window, because the graphics and framerate in this game is unacceptable ...
The game was in development for so long that I wouldn't be surprised to see references in the code to WiiU and 3DS.
@graviton But the big difference here is that these are games that are very similar to P5 be it In tone and gameplay & with the exception if the disappointing port for SMT3, are all VERY good versions of these games. There are only going to be so many more times Atlus will release the games on the Switch if underwealming sales continue before they just say "Screw it" and go PlayStation & PC (Which they have been having far more success sales wise with)
Can we at least get Persona 4 Golden on Switch? Anyway, this is good for those who don't own a Switch and/or want to experience the game in the best way possible
@MrSquee those three titles in 4 YEARS have all underperformed cause they are an extremely niche crossover game with a idol theme that has nothing to do with both fe or smt (with censorship problems and available only in english and french), a port of a 10 years old game and a half-assed remaster of a 20 years old game, if Atlus wants to sell games they need to put an effort like they did with Shin Megami Tensei V and sales numbers are already showing.
@Yomogi I think at this point if any Persona port is gonna happen it will probably be Golden
@Pokester99 nothing like fanboyism here pal. Pay attention to details in regards to atlus getting on the nerves of Nintendo fan base by teasing them to make their intentions known if they'll like P5r on the switch! What a joke that is.
@MrSquee Persona 5 was supported by Nintendo who promoted it in Smash and Nintendo fans who bought it and didn't give it bad review scores. Meanwhile Sony fans don't support games on non Playstation hardware and give them bad reviews scores. Maybe it's time for fans of japanese games to stop supporting Sony as they do everything they can to hurt the japanese industry.
Couldn't care less that other gamers will get to play this masterpiece... if it wasn't because we only have indication of double standards! Like others have said, Persona has been "locked" on playstation for years without any sign of it changing, while we see preparation for other platforms here directly in the code, i.e. that they've already prepared for it sometime during the development. There will be an outrage if Atlus' next Switch announcement is just the Persona dancing game, but we'll see if they can redeem themselves in december.
On the other hand, I wonder if it could be leftovers from the unreal engine? I'm not expert in that field, so I have no idea
@MrSquee SMTV hasn’t even come out for a week yet. I will wait and see how well the game does after December at least. Plus, it’s still unrealistic to compare an old game port to a new game. Perhaps Atlus was testing the Switch market with the old ports and has actually determined the Switch is worth the investment and put in more effort onto SMTV. We don’t know.
And Atlus hasn’t even brought over the Etrian Odyssey series yet either. That will do better than the old ports.
Man these comment sections are just getting angrier and angrier and over a port of all things. People need to relax and just enjoy some games.
@graviton I was directly comparing 1st week sales which stand at:
SMT V: 9th
P5: 1st
P5R: 5th
SMT3HD: 13th
P5S: 5th
Neither TMS#FE or Catherine Full Body Switch charted in the top 40
There is nothing wrong at looking at a direct 1st week comparison of sales
@danemord "On the other hand, I wonder if it could be leftovers from the unreal engine? I'm not expert in that field, so I have no idea"
That is probably the most sensible conclusion. But it can be fun to speculate. =)
Already said this over at PushSquare, but no problems if they did port this over, as long as mainline Persona starts coming to Switch
@MS7000 Probably isnt any leftovers otherwise we would also see some other forms of information and not only for PS4 and PC. I also highly doubt the Persona games will appear on the switch but I'd love to be wrong since I mainly play on handheld consoles and dont have that much time at home to finish a lot of PS games.
On the other hand SMT never was a nintendo exclusive so I can see them doing this. I really hope we see some sort of Digital Devil remaster or Devil Survivor 3
@Medic_Alert Word. And if these leaks from the GeForce datamine are true we can expect a Chrono Cross Remake, Final Fantasy Tactic Remake and both of those can land on the switch easily... Worth the "exchange" :')
@jimmer exactly, the PC was going to be :reportedly: released in December 2021, but Sony :reportedly: bought another 6 month exlusivity
Are you ***** serious? I know many people who have bought a switch because of the promise of SMTV all those years ago (myself included) so if this really is the case then that's just a massive slap in the face. ***** Sega
If these data miners keep this crap up then it won't be long before games makers spend wasted time trying to block people from getting to this stuff!!!
I mean its an Unreal Engine Title that runs not pretty smooth on the system ofc they didn't bild this for switch alone... other wise they would have scaled back some of the stuff to get a more smooth experience...
@victordamazio
The ideal scenario for the consumer here would be "no exclusives, all games for all systems".
In that case, your idea of a console selling less and then not getting games anymore stops working.
Also you are arguing about the possibility that your console isn't getting enough games anymore in worst case.
But if there aren't enough games for you, then you shouldn't have bought that console in the first place.
Ideally a console should simply sell because it is a good system. People buying consoles for the exclusives is already a huge problem in my book, because that means they have to spend more money on an additional system even though they would normally prefer a different one.
This simply isn't good for consumers.
The most obvious answer is that the engine was probably built for PS4/Switch/PC and this is remnant code. It started development around 2017 and entered full production in 2018, around the time Atlus were making Catherine Full Body and Persona 5 Royal.
Saying that, who knows. Atlus are strange since being bought by Sega, they very rarely released multiplats (seriously there's barely any) but all of a sudden everything's going ro other platforms in some way shape or form.
Edit - Actually I think about it, there's a bunch of demon models/textures in SMTV taken from Persona 5. The code is likely more intertwined than we think.
@dew12333 Or they just pay more attencion and don't put these kind of obvious references into the code. Make it either less obvious or only include the code necessary for the specific system.
At least SMT 3 (featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series) had a reason to be remastered onto PlayStation consoles. The other main SMT games are supposed to be Nintendo exclusive the same way main Persona games are supposed to be Sony exclusive. Much like everyone else, if SMT 5 becomes multiplatform, so should Persona 5.
@bluemage1989
The problem comes from console exclusivity. Persona 5 has virtually no reason to remain a Sony exclusive especially considering Persona 5 Strikers is on the Switch. No one wants to buy two separate consoles to enjoy games within the same franchise. If SMT 5's exclusivity is removed, it would just add insult to injury because people will believe that Sega is treating Nintendo unfairly at that point and people would HAVE to go out and buy a PS4 or PS5.
Honestly, I don't really care. I'm playing it on the Switch now. If more people get to play it on other platforms later, it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game. And I can see how Atlus might need for their games to be multiplat to make enough money. Ports are how game makers stay in business, and it's a net win for all of us if Atlus stays viable.
People are going to be all "but, but PERSONA!!!" The thing is, I don't care about Persona. I've never played it, except for P5 Strikers. SMT and EO are my jams, along with occasional Atlus oddities like Trauma Center and Catherine.
Ideally, all of these things would be out on every platform, but to be honest I already don't have time to play all the games I want. (For example, I bought Catherine on Switch last year and still haven't finished it).
@westman98 yeah that’s probably some dev stuff for before they got it working on the switch or something like that
This fine as long as the Switch gets Persona 5 Royal 😁
@UltimateOtaku91 That's not very Megumin-ish of you.. I want to see some EXPLOSION action over this! 😁
@JustMonika haha well I can't just go blowing up every article I go on, needs recharging
It's sad seeing Switch owners still begging for Persona 5 on Switch
@K1LLEGAL I’d be happy anyway I could get them but I always like buying physical on switch. It blows my mind we haven’t yet. It would sell very well no doubt.
@UltimateOtaku91 I'd carry you on my back any day.. Har har har
so Shin Megami Tensei V is a timed exclusive on Switch just like Monster Hunter Rise?
Good. More people can enjoy the game.
@TimGibsonPBS did Nintendo have enough cash to buy Sega?
A port to PS4/PS5 wouldn't surprise me in the least.
If it happens, I just hope they make it an enhanced version with additional content. I don't mind double dipping if new content is added.
@westman98 it seen Shin Megami Tensei V is a timed exclusive on Switch just like Monster Hunter Rise.
Nothing wrong with that. Third parties no longer do exclusives unless paid to do so. In the end more people will play the game and the devs will make more money, so why not.
I played Catherine:Full Body on Switch a year ago and finished it in one play through because I was that into it and now I’m craving Atlus content
@MrSquee Catherine Full Body flopped on EVERY platform, hardly a Switch problem but rather a rerelease nobody asked for that didn't bring much new to guarantee almost full price
If true it's bothersome Atlus can't even do one true Switch exclusive but god forbid they bother PS fanboys by porting those exclusives to other systems despite years of people asking for them other platforms. Nothing wrong with SMTV being elsewhere but the extreme bias Atlus is showing towards Sony
@Munchlax exactly what I said on PushSquare. Its only fair imo
@westman98 there were datamine references to RE3 Remake for Nintendo Switch and RE3 Remake can't even run on Switch.
Also the SAME Geforce leak that leaked SMT V for PC also leaked Bayonetta 3 for PC
While I'm enjoying the game, the framerate and input delay are pretty hard to deal with when trying to traverse the netherworld or navigate menus. I'm really hoping the PC release happens.
I'm really interested to see what that means for other things in that GeForce leak.
Bringing more games to other platforms so more people can play is a good thing, except for when it's our games! This is how you sound lol
Also this doesn't confirm anything so it's hilarious to see you guys lapping up this amazing game whilst also condemning the devs for something they have not confirmed whatsoever
@anoyonmus
Exactly. While that GeForce leak did leak some actual announcements, it should not be taken as gospel.
@westman98 yeah and so should data mines too
@Judal27 it might also not be real too. Datamines aren't always truthful
Persona's exclusiveness depends on what deal they made with Sony. Same thing with SMT V, if Nintendo paid for it to be Nintendo only, it will be, otherwise not.
@westman98 It could also mean that Nintendo Switch uses a Nvidia graphics card for their system (The Tegra X1). Maybe because the Switch is using Nvidia card, it shows some Nintendo games on the GeForce Leak
It's likely this game will come to PS4 and PC at some point, Atlus is just waiting for the time exclusive period to end which is likely a few years from now.
@ModdedInkling you can't think of a reason?? Maybe people not buying their games is enough of a reason to not waste time and money porting it over, after all they are not holding back releases just to annoy Switch owners are they. Rather then begging Atlus to release Persona I would rather people asked them to make some new games that appeals to the Switch audience like Trauma Centre. Also it should be noted that no one has to buy a console, it is a choice. I think Elder Scrolls 6 will be incredible but that doesn't mean I have to buy an Xbox I can just skip it and play something on the console I do have it's not like there isn't enough games on the horizon.
@Kr96 The Atlus you know and love aren't there anymore, these are just Sega staff using the Atlus name at this point and Sega had always had some heat when it comes to porting games for Nintendo system. You could tell Atlus were never this braindeaf when it comes to satisfying its fanbase, ever since they become a part of Sega, that's when their reputation of disappointment begins.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Oh I'm aware, back during the N3DS/PSVita Atlus were my favorite studio but nowadays my appreciation is outweighted by how much they irk me for the things they don't do
Going to grab the popcorn and see the reactions haha. It was question of time before SMTV went multiplatfrom.
we should take this as a grain of salt.
Not surprising at all. 3rd party games rarely stay exclusive to any platform anymore which is a good thing. But P5 being an exclusive to Sony still doesn't make any sense
So happy for the GeForce leak.
Good! I wanted this game but I saw the absolute abysmal framerate and performance of the game on switch and longed for it to be on other platforms. Same reason I never bought Octopath Traveler until it came to PC.
To be honest, I have no reason at all to get the switch version of any game if I can get it on PC or any other console. Why get the most inferior version of a game by buying it on switch? The only games I buy for it are the Nintendo exclusives lol
Honestly, its hard to believe that previous games aren't on every platform. I always find it odd that they don't do more mass releases on their games. Splitting the fanbase between exclusives etc only hurts them in the long run. Older games were on PSP(Vita) then newer games only on PS4/PS5. But then some were on DS/3DS, so it is all over the place. Its a big reason why I've never really got into either of the series. I can emulate the old PS1 games or PSP ones, but then for newer titles you have to go DS/3DS and then PS4. No thanks.
@bluemage1989
You can't hold games in a general stance. Every game is unique to their own aspects which is why people have a big problem skipping over certain games.
People be crying because the Switch doesn't have Persona 5...News flash, if you still haven't played Persona 5, thats on you. The game is almost 5 years old in America(6 in Japan) and you could buy a PS3 and a copy of P5 for dirt cheap, even cheaper than a switch!
So stop crying and grow up.
@JokerCK How many chapters of Persona series have been released on other platforms, excluding the recent P4Gold?
All main Personas are Playstation exclusive since psx era, i think Persona is the only jrpg saga tied with Playstation in this way
@Dingelhopper I'm not sure where you saw this "absolute abysmal framerate and performance" but I've been playing SMTV for 15 hours without a hitch. Game is responsive, snappy and beautiful, literally hasn't stuttered once.
@MrSquee Compairing SMT sales and Persona sales is a little disingenuous since both are very different games and series even if they are related. It is like comparing sales of Final Fantasy with Chocobo Mystery Dungeon. But if we compare SMT games, 5 did better than 3’s sales. So…wouldn’t that be a positive for Atlus?
@QueenKittenWrite What if I want to play Persona 5 Royal? I don’t think that is on the PS3.
@ModdedInkling you make it sound as if it's a consumers right to play a game and that it is the obligation of the developer to make that possible haha. The fact that you feel bad about skipping a game (because you have chosen not to buy the hardware required) is your problem not the developers. These are businesses not charities.
@graviton You can get a base PS4 dirt cheap as well; Ive seen them go as low as 200 bucks...Which is still cheeper than a switch.
@bluemage1989
It comes with passion and it comes with perspective. You should understand and respect that people view and enjoy their games differently than you. You simply don't view it the same way as others including myself.
So where is Persona 5 a PS3 level game? You are telling me Atlus wants to keep that on Sony platforms for years, but gonna port SMT V right away? Gtfo.
Anyone that doesn’t see this as a problem/is being an apologist for this is either a Sony fanboy, daft, or a combination of both.
Atlus isn’t owned by Sony, Sony didn’t fund P5, and they keep trolling for years with “Do you want P5 on Switch” polls. For some reason Joker is in Smash Ultimate, they put the SEQUEL spin-off on Switch, and STILL didn’t port the main game that people actually want. Sorry Atlus is beyond help with whatever bias they have.
I don’t care if SMT V is exclusive or not. I do care when a third party developer has a huge bias for whatever reason that doesn’t make sense logically which some people here can’t comprehend when they go “I don’t see this as a problem, more platforms the better” as if this only should be applied to Nintendo.
@Arawn93
And that sort of scummy garbage is the reason I'm questioning how Sega makes decisions for Atlus, if they even are making decisions for them to begin with.
@ModdedInkling yes I think with time you will have the perspective to understand how the industry works and you might even find the passion to do something about it yourself rather than jumping on the port begging bandwagon.
Why are people mad? Let me tell you why I am mad. I am mad because I bought SMTV at full price because of a limited edition steelbook. Now, I have not even started playing the game, an I already find out there will be a superior version for the PS4. By the way, I have a PS4 Pro, so I would much rather play the game were performance is going to be MUCH BETTER. Also, do not forget, that Atlus is famous for re releasing their games with new content, what Persona 5 Royal is to Persona 5. There is a possibility of getting an ultimate version of the game 3 years from now.
this is ridiculous Sony has had Persona 5 exclusivity for over 5 years and unlikely P5 is going to any other platforms yet Nintendo's "exclusive" Atlus RPG is only exclusive for likely one year and will go to other platforms, Sony will have both P5 and SMT5 and Nintendo only has SMT5 that is clear Sony Playstation bias from Atlus
Always funny to see all this NINTENDOOM comments.
Like how when a game comes later to Nintendo platforms is not Nintendo Bias, but Anti Nintendo Bias...and when a game comes later to Non Nintendo platforms it is...also Anti Nintendo Bias XD.
@JokerCK
But it immediately brings a newly released Switch exclusive to other consoles.
@Arawn93
gonna port SMT V right away
Or like when a datamined datafile means not only that the game will come to a previously unnanounced (old gen) platform, but will do so..."right away" somehow XP
@Yomerodes what are you talking about? Your comment is a mess. This is exactly the people I’m talking about.
@Arawn93
Lets make it clearer to you then.
How this piece of news can be morphed into "Shin Megami Tensei V is coming for Ps4 right away"?
This is just a datamine file. Lets say a year from now the game does finally comes to other platform (which is definitely not "right away"), You honestly believe this game will release on PS4, as in you know, Sony old gen console?
Even in a long shot, you people are just getting mad about nothing.
If this game comes out on PC, I will probably buy it again. I'm loving it on switch but I also want to see it at maximum power
Couldn't the PS4 references in the code be from reused Persona 5 demon assets?
@bluemage1989
To each their own. I'm looking at it from a perspective that this isn't just a wasted opportunity for a consumer, but for a business. Persona 5 presents a lot of potential to make profits because of how easy it would be for developers to port it over to the Switch; it doesn't cost the same absurd amounts of money like it did for games like The Witcher 3 and Dying Light. This isn't just about passion or taking things too personally. This is also about looking at the huge irony behind the business decisions.
@ModdedInkling I don't think releasing it on Switch is as cheap as you think. I mean maybe your right maybe it is easy money but you have to ask why they are not releasing it if its that simple?? Or perhaps the team of people who make these decisions, the ones who have to think these things through properly and keep their businesses operating and people in jobs, know better and realise it isn't in their interests to do it. Given the fickle nature of a vocal minority of the Switch ownership I don't blame them for not bothering either.
@victordamazio To be fair, the PC is technically a Microsoft platform. A lot of their games stay on the Xbox/PC family. Sony just recently broke the sacred trend by bringing their PS4 exclusives to PC. Nothing is sacred anymore.
In this day and age does exclusivity matter anymore? Most people have more than one game console, and the average gamer is now old enough to work and buy their own consoles. This was a big deal when we were all kids as our parents usually only bought us one console and one only for years. You have PS4 games on PC now...exclusivity almost means nothing anymore.
I have Persona 5 Royal Steelbook Edition on PS4 that I bought on day one that I haven't even touched yet, and will probably get Persona V on Switch. I never understood this weird loyalty to one system. I own every system to get the best of all worlds.
