There's been a lot of drama surrounding graded retro game sales recently, with many people claiming the whole thing is an elaborate scam. However, it would seem that despite the current cloud of negativity, there's still room for new trends to develop – but we didn't think that selling empty, flat-packed boxes would be one of them.
That's right – there's currently a listing on eBay for two GoldenEye display boxes – first print (1997) and Player's Choice (1999) – with a combined price tag of £2,445 ($3,281 USD). "I'm reluctant to split up the pair but feel free to contact [me] with any questions or to discuss a price," says the seller.
The seller states that the boxes are both 'UKG Graded 85+ NM+' and that they have been "kept as close to pristine as possible, never made up and graded in original flat press condition". Clearly, there has never been a better time to own an empty display box related to this classic Rare FPS.

This auction has even caught the attention of David Doak, one of the original developers of the game:
Joking aside, we're not seriously suggesting that empty boxes could become the next big collecting craze, even though it's easy to see why serious fans might find these desirable items. Still, for that price, we'd be keen to have, you know, a copy that actually contained the game itself.

More inflated rubbish from Heritage auctions and their cronies.
Great news, I have a number of pristine console boxes cluttering my collection up.
Man, and I used to throw away my boxes growing up to save space…
Good thing official N64 toilet paper never existed, or they would be selling graded used sheets on ebay.
I recently sold some near-mint condition N64 games boxed, although they fetched a nice price, it's nowhere near this crazy amount. It really makes you wonder who in their right mind would pay so much for a piece of carton, sans the game.
This is nuts.
The only box I kept in this state was A Link to the Past
I suppose this is a better investment than NFTs but still a huge waste of cash to me.
There are numerous listings for everyday British penny coins asking £10’000. The price that someone asks for on eBay isn’t news at all, let’s wait to see what someone sells it at.
That's nuts
I'm a huge N64 collector and have all 243 + variants pal Aus releases CIB, all in like new condition but even I think this is nuts.
This is worth more than those boxes and i bought it about 10 years ago for $100.

@Pillowpants
Someone thats either not in their right mind or for whom 3k€ is the equivalent to 2,50€ for the average Joe...
My original owned-from-new copy of GoldenEye didn't come with a box, since it was bundled with the N64, and came inside the N64 box.
I'm not sure I want to pay £2000 for one, though.
@Freek I wouldn't mind seeing some photos of your N64 collection, it sounds impressive.
What gets me is people think because someone lists something on eBay that’s it’s value. I saw a Wrestling double dvd for £1349 - usually goes for about £20…. Clearly no one will pay that and yet they had a load of not even Rare stuff for hundreds and thousands. It’s sold items that tell you the value. Until this item sold it’s price is irrelevant
This is taking the mick now 🤦♂️
Game boxes, popularized by youtubers filming in front of their game shelves as if they were silken French tapestries
Everyone's talking about how they're upset they threw their boxes away, or happy cause they have boxes, yet nobody is talking about how this is really really stupid that empty game boxes are selling this much. I mean come on, a complete set of a game, I can understand, but a piece of damn cardboard that the games were in going for thousands? Come the hell on
@Waa-Laa
Thanks
It has taken me over 10 years of collecting but I finally finished it last year.
I have tested them all and play them regularly.
I have them in some glass cabinets as I love the boxes.
Here's some of them

That's not all of them, I have a fair few 😁
@Lugtor Most probably collectors with a lot of money, then. I suppose once you get into collecting you can just sell some of your collection and recollect using all the money from the trades you make. Or if you just have loaded parents.
@Freek that is amazing mate, Thank you. I was more of a Playstation guy in the 90s, but my brother was the Nintendo guy, he has a few SNES and N64 collections but is dwarfed by yours 😂 thanks again mate, that's really impressive, my hat is off.
I have a carton box of the golden eye game... You can get it for 300 euros? no problem.,,,
@Stocksy I searched on ebay and it appears that a box that looks extremely similar to this one was sold £425 in September. So it appears putting in a box with a label in the corner is worth quite a lot!
@dew12333 wow. It’s a bit off this price but still bonkers.
It’s either a con scheme to try and manipulate someone into buying these buy selling them for inflated prices to tempt an outsider in…
Or someone needs to clean some money.
@dew12333 Sometimes that's just the seller selling to himself under a different username to make items appear more wanted than they really are, which makes people think that they really are worth that much money and that they should probably buy one quickly before the prices increase even further.
Thanks, I hate it.
when i was a pawnbroker, people would come in expecting me to want/buy their stuff for crazy prices because "i seen em selling for X thousand bucks on ebay!"
as someone else said, who cares what price some individual is ASKING for any particular item? i could make a post asking 10,000,000 dollars for a goldeneye box right now, and i dont even have a goldeneye box.
I have soda bottle label, meticulously peeled from the limited edition Spiced Pepsi offered at Christmas only once. $500,000 is my starting price.
I bought a Wave Race 64 and Extreme-G box for $10 not long ago.
Guess this primed to become NFT af.
What an unforgettable night you could have with snow and hookers instead of buying an peace of cardboard ^^
Bought DKC3’s box just last week. Very happy with it.
I've got a closet full of these! Am I a multimillionaire now!??
In case anyone hasn't seen it, check out the tube video by Karl Jobst. It's amazing he basically rips apart a massive scam where the people selling games and grading them are buying them up themselves and are all in cahoots.
Then suckers are paying through the nose for 'collectors' pieces.
These aren't your everyday game boxes; they're apparently specially-marked display-only variants for use on store shelves, and ones that have never been folded into shape at that.
They're actually legitimately rare to the point of likely near-uniqueness, but just being unique doesn't make something valuable - Goldeneye boxes can't very well become "the next form of currency" if there's only two such 'bills' in existence.
I have to admit, though, I do kinda like the thought of pristine empty boxes becoming the de facto collector's items instead of sealed games - an empty box (usually) means there's one more game cartridge that's been used and enjoyed as it should've been out there, instead of being sealed in the crypt of its own sacrosanct packaging for all time.
@DABYX Yeah this whole graded game market is basically just one big money laundering scheme.
Retro game collecting jumped the shark long ago.
I find the whole situation tiresome.
@Waa-Laa
Thanks.
No problem at all.
@liljazzy2 It didn't. It's just more obvious how absurd it can be thanks to 2021 and instant access to social media. Game collecting is pretty much always been the same. There have always been idiots and stupid trends. Prices rise and fall like the tide.
