@JaxonH Battery life on the Deck is fine for what it is. You have to sacrifice something. Even Nintendo won't be able to come up with new magical battery tech for the next system. I'm pretty sure after seeing how little people care about the Steam Deck battery life (yeah, it's on their radar especially having passed the one million sales mark recently) they might actually increase power to sacrifice battery life. This has been an ongoing battle since the GameBoy. I remember Sony underclocked the PSP CPU to 222MHz to conserve battery life. God of War: Chains of Olympus was the first game to unlock the CPU to the full 333MHz, but the battery only lasted about 2 hours. However, gamers didn't seem to care. That's a good enough time for a single-play session. Even the 3DS had pretty bad battery life compared to the DS and had a power-hungry sleep mode. Most people play handhelds near a power source. Unless you're on a bus or out in the wilderness you're always near a power source.
Also, Nintendo is the one company I don't expect to stay hybrid forever. For Sony and Microsoft I expect them to always have boxes hooked up to TVs forever. Nintendo will always change things up as time goes on. Unless they suddenly change their philosophy of only bringing a new product out when it can innovate then I doubt it will be a hybrid console forever. People thought Nintendo would stick with motion controls forever. People thought the GameBoy line would last forever or their dedicated handhelds. It was blasphemy to think they would ever go away. Now look. However, the motion controls in the Switch are dialed back a lot and are secondary. A lot of games don't use it even first-party titles. The craze came and went and they're realizing that. Nintendo is good at adapting to the times. You would be surprised how many Switch owners use their system in docked mode only. I know some people who rarely ever use it in handheld mode. It's more than you might think. I feel they would find a way to get people to use the new Switch in a handheld mode more based off of statistics I'm sure they have been collecting this whole time.
@VoidofLight Awful is a bit much. They're great objectively so. They're not bad at all. Odyssey was a perfect evolution to Galaxy. It was perfect. Wasn't too hard. Wasn't too easy. Exploration was abundant and the graphics were great. It's a classic Miyamoto design. Also, Breathe of the Wild had a few flaws but is regarded as the best in the series. I feel like your stance on this is part of a fraction of a percent of Nintendo fans. You're fine to not like these games, but I feel more like maybe you're burnt out on gaming as a whole. It's not really Nintendo's fault. I felt the opposite. Nintendo's offerings on 3DS were just average.
There were no original Zelda games. Just three remakes. Smash Bros was a cut-down version. Super Mario Maker was a cut down version. Super Mario 3D Land was too easy and simplistic and was later upstaged by 3D World. The only games that felt not cut down were Mario Golf and Mario Kart 7. There were no 2D Mario games. Samus Returns (while really good) was just another remake. Mario Party and WarioWare just got mini-game compilations. The list goes on. I'm not saying any of them were bad, but the Switch is getting the full Nintendo treatment. In fact, probably the best effort since GameCube.
My wife loves Pokemon. I lost interest as a kid after Gen 2. However, the game's state is abysmal. GameFreak knows they can get away with this. It's a money-printing machine. I wouldn't be surprised if each new game is less and less complete when released. Not to mention butt ugly. These are the ugliest first party games on the Switch bar none. I did complete Shield myself but have skipped the last three releases. I just hope this isn't a trend because this is one of those rare franchises that will sell no matter what state the game is in.
@VoidofLight Third-party exclusives have been a thing of the past since the mid-HD-era (PS3/X360). I remember when Mass Effect jumped to PS3 everyone lost their minds. Nintendo's first-party offerings have been just as good as any previous 3D console. Mario Odyssey is one of the best Mario games since Galaxy. I mean, people buy Nintendo systems for first party games. Sometimes exclusively so. We all forget the strong third party support the Switch has. I have nearly 150 physical Switch games and most of them are third party. Most publishers weren't porting anything to Wii U before. Now nearly every multi-platform game comes to Switch if the hardware can support it. That's a huge win for Nintendo. They haven't had that kind of support since the GameCube. Even the Wii didn't get much third part support outside of shovelware.
@KindofaBigDeal This probably has more to prevent cheating than anything. Saves can be altered on PC and then uploaded back. Without significant development costs to create software that checks it, they won't bother with it.
Pretty much every major holiday release. God of War Ragnarok on PS5 is easily Game of the Year. No competition. I bought The Callisto Protocol on Steam after they released the day one hotfix for performance. Can't wait to see that with ray-tracing on my 3080ti. Gotta finish my 40 hour work weekend first (yes work weekendCall of Duty Modern Warfare II multiplayer off and on on PC. Sonic Frontiers on PC as well. It's actually a good Sonic game. Sonic has been a part of my entire life since I was 3 years old with the original game. It took this long to make a good 3D Sonic game outside of Generations. I also am dabbling with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on my Steam Deck. Running it at max settings is incredible. 900 series GPUs back in 2015 were struggling to run that game and here I am doing it on a handheld! Surprisingly, I haven't touched my Switch in a while. I've just been busy with my Steam Deck and PS5 lately. I plan to pick up Bayonetta 3 at some point. I want to play Xenoblade 3, but I know I'll never finish it. With two young kids and a career, I lean towards shorter games now.
@JaxonH With the global chip shortage, I'm sure it's delaying the announcement. They don't want a PS5/XSX issue on their hands where two years later people still can't find any in stores without sniping them. I'm thinking at least another year. Maybe a 2024 announcement. Sales are still strong and there's not enough of a decline to push the red button and release Switch 2 prematurely.
Also, Rise runs great on Steam Deck. It's a great alternative to the Switch. Better graphics help a lot. Max settings look great on it. I purposefully waited for the PC port to buy it on Steam Deck instead. The upgraded visuals were worth the wait alone. After getting the Steam Deck I buy multi-platform games on there instead unless I specifically want a physical copy for Switch.
On your hybrid console theory, it's possible they could abandon it after the Switch 2 especially if it doesn't sell more than the first Switch. There are also issues with the Joycon fiasco that's cost Nintendo millions. They will probably drastically redesign the Switch 2 to either use full-size joysticks or something else. It's not out of Nintendo's design DNA to make a sequel console, but make it completely new in some way like the Wii U or SNES to the NES.
I pirated this on day one when it launched for PSP (worked minimum wage and couldn't afford every game release at the time) and loved it. Looking forward to playing it again.
It's being developed on decade-old tablet hardware. It looks great for what it is. I wish people would stop saying that the games would look better on modern hardware. No sh!!!t.
Monster Hunter Rise on Steam Deck and Pac-Man World on Switch. I own both original Pac-Man World games on PS1 and #3 on OG Xbox, but never got around to them.
@Aventurier But that's the thing. It's niche. They need to make up the cost somehow. They aren't going to sell 100 million of them. And any climate is technically a bad climate.
@Lony85 You're not part of any problem. Remasters and remakes are meant for new audiences, not old ones. I don't how much fans complain to developers about something. They're not meant for you. That's not where the money is for these types of games. However, they're great if you want to replay something you're fond of but want the convenience of a newer system or better visuals and improvements. I think remasters/remakes are getting better over the years and the quality and care are improving.
Does anyone remember the cheap and dirty ports of the PS3/X360 era? That was a plague that's mostly gone. The "HD port" plague. Literally, nothing but a stretched 16:9 image with texture filtering thrown in. A full-on remake of something back then was a pipe dream. Everyone's got it good now!
@Roibeard64 KOTOR was an Xbox game first. I remember renting it and playing on my Xbox 360 and never finishing it. I was a PlayStastion kid and only had a PS2 during that era. I then later had to use texture mods on PC to complete. It hasn't aged all that well which is why the remake might bring a whole new audience to the games. I bought the KOTOR II remaster on Switch a bit ago and it hasn't aged well either. I own both on PC and OG Xbox and these remasters are the best way to play so far.
@Aventurier What does this have to do with people who can't pay their bills? They obviously shouldn't and probably wouldn't be buying a game console. No one's forcing anyone to buy this. Pretty weird statement.
@SportyMarioSonicMix You're missing the point of a guide. No one is going to spend dozens of hours writing a guide on a single level. You usually get the basic strategy, where items are located, and a quick rundown on how to get to it, and that's it. Anything more nuanced is left to fans to write out. Even then, that's pretty excessive. This is what video walkthroughs are great for these days.
@Roibeard64 People forget that remasters/remakes aren't intended for people who played them prior. They're meant for a new audience who has never experienced them before. People get so mad, but there are millions out there who never played these games before and this is a great way to experience them for the first time. I think remasters and remakes are fine if they are done well.
Having backward compatibility on cross-physical formats isn't stupid, it's not possible. Unless Nintendo released an external DVD drive to run these games on the Switch you're going to get digital only versions and they're going to sell them obviously. There's no way to prove otherwise that you own the physical version.
@MichaelP I work with terminal disabled teens for a living. You're able-bodied. Once you're disabled you have a totally different mindset. You learn to adapt and overcome stuff and things like this become second nature. I have a patient who plays Halo with just his mouth and eyes. You learn. He started out as a young kid fully able-bodied and over time he lost all movement. I've set up several controller setups for him over time as he lost the ability to use certain fingers, and then his hands altogether. He only has a few years left and it's inventions like this that make their short existence fun and gives them things to forget about in their depressing world.
So yeah, I know exactly what I'm talking about. This setup isn't designed for you.
@MichaelP People who are disabled are never thought about in comments like these. There are plenty of disabled gamers who only can use one hand. This is perfect for them. It's not meant for people like us who are able-bodied.
@chiptoon There's various quality to "cheap chinese crap" There's Aliexpress $5 controllers, BinBok, and then Hori (which is a Japanese brand) who have been around for a couple of decades. I trust Hori way more than "BinBok".
@progx GC did have better third-party support so I put that above the N64. You can have all the first-party exclusives you want, but without good third-party support, your system is basically KIA. The Wii U proved that.
@WhiteUmbrella Exactly. When I got mine I was shocked at the minimalism. Not ideal for collectors. No fancy box to display on a shelf, but a lower carbon footprint is nice. I highly doubt Nintendo would ever do anything like that. Especially include a case.
@chiptoon Because they're cheap and awful Chinese crap? And a completely untrusted "brand" if you can even call it that. Hori has been around for decades and makes quality products on par with first parties. It's why they're so trusted. I have tons of Hori products going back to the 32-bit generation.
@Ironcore Sans every single publisher in the 90s-10s? I know they were linked to all the awful cartoon video games, but they had some excellent titles such as Red Faction, Atlantis, WWF and WWE series, Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, MotoGP, Supreme Commander, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Darksiders, UFC, Stacking, Saints Row, Full Spectrum Warrior, de Blob, MX series, many portable ports like Age of Mythologies (DS), Viva Pinata (DS), Sabre Wulf (GBA), Titan Quest, Destroy All Humans, Tak series, Juiced, Drawn to Life, and the list goes on. Just like any publisher they had some amazing games before they became THQ Nordic.
I'm so sick of HP. I grew up with it from the very beginning with the original 3 novels. I watched every movie with my family at every Thanksgiving in the Theaters religiously and I'm so done. It's great for newer generations or insanely hardcore fans, but no thanks. I got burned out a decade ago. After Part 2's credits rolled I screamed in the theater, "THANK GOD IT'S OVER" While everyone cheered and clapped. Yes, it was a huge part of my childhood, and I read every book as they came out, but my God was it a series that got beat into the ground.
@sixrings That will never happen. That's even less unlikely than 2D sprites. Digitized graphics are awful and Mortal Kombat just so happened to nail a look and feel that fit. 99% of all games with digitized graphics were bad.
@Kyloctopus Being in the red is a good thing? How is not having profit any good? THAT'S a bad take. I'm pretty sure Sega is one of the least profitable companies right now. They're nowhere near the profit earnings of Rockstar or even Sony.
You know it's sad when pachinko machines are your largest income. Sega is at a point of no return. I smell an acquisition coming along at some point. The closing of their arcade stores in Japan was the first sign of that.
@Kirgo Valve also released Aperture Desk Job this year which is a small tech demo game for the Deck set in the universe of Portal. Epic's last game they released in house was Robo Recall, but the last major release was Gears of War 3. That was over a decade ago. Epic Games doesn't really develop games anymore. Any more recent releases are collaborations with other studios like Fortnite.
@steventonysmith Ok you just confirmed it. It's okay to be poor. I was poor growing up and couldn't afford much. No one is judging you dude. It's a jealousy thing clearly. Valve also doesn't abandon their hardware as long as there's interest. The Index is still on generation one and it's going strong.
Again, judging something you've never touched. The Deck isn't in beta and it's actually better built physically than the Switch. It feels better to use to. But you wouldn't know that. In fact, head to r/SteamDeck and there's tons of threads of people surprised at how good it feels in the hand. My 6-year-old was able to play the Deck with no complaints. Tons of R&D went into the Deck to make it feel as good as it does. It's the exact opposite of janky. You really think THIS many people would be buying it if it was janky and awful? Pre-orders would have been cancelled in a heartbeat. Use some common sense.
The fact that you stated you have a gaming PC and it's not your preferred way to play just dismissed all of your previous ramblings. You don't like playing PC games. Leave it at that. There's NOTHING wrong with preferring the Switch. I also love my Switch by the way. I have 120+ physical games for it. However, you're unfound disdain towards a handheld you've never touched makes no sense.
It's a fantastic device and there are PLENTY of people who play less intensive games. In fact, that's the majority of what people play. They usually have one or two intensive games, but tons of smaller games. The Deck is actually getting people to dive back into indie gaming and discover stuff they previously ignored because they don't want to be strapped to their desk playing it. The hate is just completely unjustified.
Instead of raging about something that you're jealous of or don't understand. Educate yourself or ignore it and move on. I'm not responding to you anymore after this. Not a single person here agrees with you. Think about that.
King of Fighters: Garou Edition is what this will probably be. The hardcore fans will tear it apart. I don't think anything other than 2D artwork will fly.
@thinkhector So that makes it LESS portable. I don't know how you don't see that. It's more mass=less portable. It's the same mass whether the mass is in 3 pieces or not.
@steventonysmith It has a longer battery life on less graphically intense games and the screen is just fine. It's a nice IPS panel. I'm not sure if you have a Deck, but the Switch battery isn't much better.

The backlash and news of the game's performance issues I'm sure made people hold off on buying the game. That's going to hurt sales for sure.

@chiptoon Because they're cheap and awful Chinese crap? And a completely untrusted "brand" if you can even call it that. Hori has been around for decades and makes quality products on par with first parties. It's why they're so trusted. I have tons of Hori products going back to the 32-bit generation.

Re: A New South Park Game Has Been Teased
Re: Hogwarts Legacy Release Date Announced, Just Not For The Switch
I'm so sick of HP. I grew up with it from the very beginning with the original 3 novels. I watched every movie with my family at every Thanksgiving in the Theaters religiously and I'm so done. It's great for newer generations or insanely hardcore fans, but no thanks. I got burned out a decade ago. After Part 2's credits rolled I screamed in the theater, "THANK GOD IT'S OVER" While everyone cheered and clapped. Yes, it was a huge part of my childhood, and I read every book as they came out, but my God was it a series that got beat into the ground.

Re: A New South Park Game Has Been Teased
@Ironcore What have they ever done to you? They've had solid releases lately. More so than many other publishers.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 13th)
Playing my Steam Deck. I haven't touched my Switch in a month.

1. Octopath Traveler
2. Ender Lillies
3. MotoGP 22
4. One Finger Death Punch 2
Re: SNK Announces New Entry To The Fatal Fury Series, Its First Since 1999
@sixrings That will never happen. That's even less unlikely than 2D sprites. Digitized graphics are awful and Mortal Kombat just so happened to nail a look and feel that fit. 99% of all games with digitized graphics were bad.
Re: Sega's Financial Results Bolstered By Sonic Origins And Pachinko Machines
@Kyloctopus Being in the red is a good thing? How is not having profit any good? THAT'S a bad take. I'm pretty sure Sega is one of the least profitable companies right now. They're nowhere near the profit earnings of Rockstar or even Sony.
Re: Sega's Financial Results Bolstered By Sonic Origins And Pachinko Machines
You know it's sad when pachinko machines are your largest income. Sega is at a point of no return. I smell an acquisition coming along at some point. The closing of their arcade stores in Japan was the first sign of that.
Re: Valve's Steam Client Beta Adds Support For Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers
Re: Valve's Steam Client Beta Adds Support For Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers
Re: SNK Announces New Entry To The Fatal Fury Series, Its First Since 1999
@Serpenterror If it's not fully 2D sprites I feel there will be a large crowd that will still tear it apart. Garou fans are a bit prissy.
Re: SNK Announces New Entry To The Fatal Fury Series, Its First Since 1999
King of Fighters: Garou Edition is what this will probably be. The hardcore fans will tear it apart. I don't think anything other than 2D artwork will fly.

Re: Valve's Steam Client Beta Adds Support For Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers
@thinkhector So that makes it LESS portable. I don't know how you don't see that. It's more mass=less portable. It's the same mass whether the mass is in 3 pieces or not.
Re: Valve's Steam Client Beta Adds Support For Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers
@steventonysmith It has a longer battery life on less graphically intense games and the screen is just fine. It's a nice IPS panel. I'm not sure if you have a Deck, but the Switch battery isn't much better.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 6th)
I've been playing nothing but my Steam Deck for the last two weeks. I haven't been able to go back to my Switch (for third party games).
