@Nitwit13 I've never had a go on a US SNES so I can't say how it compares but the PAL version also had a DEEP eject button, you could really pop those carts out if you wanted to. 😀
@axelhander I would totally disagree with this. In my opinion Super Mario World is perfection in 2d platform game terms. I jumped from my Sega Master System to the SNES because I wanted to play decent versions of arcade games at home and not particularly to play SMW despite it having great reviews in the magazines at the time (probably about 18 months before being officially released in the UK), as soon as I played it as the bundled game I thought it was absolutely brilliant and it's still a game I love doing a complete run through every couple of years.
@BringleWorkshop Some of the boss battles in Ganbare Goemon 4 are annoying (I think the Puyo Puyo one irritated me) but it is a fantastic game, amazing soundtrack as well.
@topsekret In my opinion there's a big difference between Wii U to Switch and Switch to Switch 2. Because Wii U sold so poorly there were a load of people that hadn't played those games before and those of us that did own a Wii U just had to suck it up and pay full price for the Switch version as the physical games were on a different media format. I'm not particularly interested in Animal Crossing but the cheap upgrade path for people who have the Switch 1 version seems pretty reasonable to me, not sure why anyone would expect it to include the DLC as well.
I'm an inverter on first person and third person games but the controls do feel quite weird on Luigi's Mansion, although I don't remember it bothering me back in 2002. I'm not sure if you can do all the same remapping on the S2 GC controller but will have a look and I might become a heathen. 😆
@dennabeht Nintendo didn't develop the game and I doubt they went with SD express to "sell you more crap" as they are not proprietary memory cards and they wouldn't make any profit from third party SD cards sold, other than possibly a cut on the officially branded ones but I can't imagine that would be a huge amount. For them to make SD express a requirement I suspect that the older SD cards didn't cut the mustard when it comes to playing the latest games so they had to go down that route.
It's a really good game and an impressive display of the potential of Switch 2 ports. I've had it for about a month and have had a few hard crashes but as people have said above I haven't lost any significant progress, they've just been minor annoyances but hopefully the latest version will rectify this. Despite crashes I would definitely recommend the game, particularly if you are a fan of the original trilogy.
@Sindayl I'd imagine there are also a few who own neither but are voting for Sonic just to stick it to Nintendo because the internet has told them they're bad.
@Ironcore I don't really understand how that works. You ordered a physical copy from Nintendo and they sent you a digital download code through the post?
@basswitch Where did you read the Mean Machines preview of FF, do you still have the magazine or is it online? I quite fancy reading it as I think that very article is the one that convinced me I would wait for SNES to be released rather than get a Mega drive.
Personally I'm not fussed about game key cards. I don't tend to sell on games anyway so I'd just buy the digital copy if the GKC one will use up the same amount of storage. Having said that I pre-ordered Street Fighter 6 Years 1&2 Edition for £35 from Amazon so if I see a deal like that again you can count me in.
@Anti-Matter Do you own a Switch 2 or have any intention of getting one in the future? I get it that you like games aimed at children and are happy to play them on your PS5 but I don't really understand why you want to constantly share that here if you have no interest in the latest Nintendo console.
That's your choice and it's right that you do what works for you but Nintendo have this business model currently and if you don't like it then you'll need to stick with your principles and vote with your wallet by not subscribing. I've also thrown gobs of cash at Nintendo by re-buying Mario and Zelda games etc on multiple systems since 1992 so the relatively inexpensive annual sub works for me.
@The_Nintend_Pedant I'm not sure how much the base NSO subscription costs in the US (I would guess not a huge amount more than 15 dollars annually) but I think if you want to play Wave Race 64 on a current Nintendo platform then you'll just have suck it up and subscribe (which would also give you access to a multitude of other games) or get yourself an N64 and the original game, maybe a CRT as well. You may not like the subscription model but that's the route Nintendo have gone down and personally I prefer it to VC as there are a lot of games I've got to try that I wouldn't have paid for as an individual VC download.
@Jayenkai The Dr Who levels in Lego Dimensions were very good. I also liked that if you were playing as the Dr minifigure he regenerates when you die and there is some dialogue for every version of the Dr.
@The_Nintend_Pedant I guess I'm more forgiving on performance than you. Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts ran like crap at times but I found it absolutely amazing at the time and wouldn't have wanted it to have downgraded the graphics etc. Not a Nintendo game but an example of a game that was reaching for more than was readily achievable on Nintendo hardware at the time which I found incredibly impressive. I haven't played DKB yet but from what I've read the performance dips won't be anywhere near that level and I suspect won't bother me in the slightest. I guess you could argue that I should expect more but perhaps I've been conditioned to accept the version that's available even if I feel it's stretching the hardware/developers capabilities at the time. I had no issues with TOTK but it does look and play very well with a little glow up.
@The_Nintend_Pedant I am happy for them to have a vision for a game which they aim for and then make necessary but not anywhere near gamebreaking compromises (which sounds applicable to DKB) to get as close to that as possible then that's good with me. Should SMB3 have been kept in the can because it suffered from sprite flicker etc? I appreciate that game was released very late in the NES lifecycle as opposed to DKB which is very early in Switch 2's. At least nowadays the game could potentially be patched for better performance unlike 35 years ago.
@The_Nintend_Pedant They don't need to compare it to anything, if the controls etc. in THPS3 are more user friendly for a modern day player than those in THPS4 and they've made the THPS4 controls more similar to those then in my opinion that comment is correct and doesn't require any pedantry. I have never played either game and haven't read the review so I'm purely commenting on the bit you've highlighted and your response.
@Bentleyma It's pretty easy to set up a Japanese account, I did it on Switch to get the Famicom and Super Famicom apps. I assume it's still easy but I haven't bothered downloading the GameCube app because by that point any games that weren't available in my region would probably be a right pain to even get through the menu screens.
@The_Nintend_Pedant They may have launched some with multiple variants available immediately but I don't think they've ever launched one with a single version available on day one and then announced they would be releasing multiple colour options etc. within a week of the original launch. Apologies if I'm being pedantic but I don't get your point, it looks like you're being deliberately antagonistic, which I also am because your comment annoyed me.
@Anti-Matter That's fine, just don't buy one but is it necessary to repeat basically the same comment on every single article? I think everyone already knows you're not that keen on getting a Switch 2.
@rmswriter I downloaded it to Switch 2 just to see how it ran and it was ok until I got to the bit when you can travel over the city, crashed pretty much every time I used the grappling hook. Deleted it and re-installed it and it seems to be ok now. Runs much better than on Switch 1 but the graphics are still pretty dodgy.
I've seen Arkham Knight described as the worst Switch port but to me that goes to WWE 2K18, which was an absolute mess but I still had some fun with it. Just out of interest I might see how it runs on Switch 2 if I can be bothered to download the sizeable file required even if you bought the cartridge.
@Pillowpants If you have four controllers and hold R on all of them from when Switch 2 logo clicks together then there is a third boot up apparently, haven't done that one myself yet though.
@Pillowpants If you start holding R (or Z on GC controller) when it's on the black screen and the Switch 2 logo clicks together it seems to work for the alternate sound.
@Truegamer79 Goemon is a Konami franchise but I absolutely agree it needs to come back. I would settle for a translated collection of the Famicom and Super Famicom games for the time being.
I am so glad I used to buy gaming magazines 30 years ago. At the time I probably would have thought about buying this to get another 1v1 fighting fix but having played it for the first time this week it is pretty much what I expected, a bland, generic inferior take on SF2.
@ChaosBadger777 If that's the only bowl I have or I can eat from that bowl whilst I'm away from the TV and the other bowl would only allow me to eat from it when I'm tethered to the telly then probably yes.
@Papichulo In my opinion the Game and Watch is a collectible item aimed mainly at people of a certain age (which I am firmly in unfortunately). As it is definitely a nostalgic product I think if they'd started messing about with the game to any great extent I don't think that would have gone down that well. My main gripe is that it doesn't have more actual G & W games on it, preferably with the option to show the the 'graphics' that aren't being used in a greyed out form like my DS version of Mario's Cement Factory, much more authentic. Still love the new G & W though.
@DK-Fan Earthbound deserves to be on the list and should be higher up in my opinion. Even if the game had been released in Europe I very much doubt I would have bought it at the time but when it was released on Wii U VC I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and it didn't disappoint. Great game with an amazing varied soundtrack, good story and amusing dialogue.
Decent list, I'm disappointed that Pilotwings and Super Tennis haven't made the top 50. I would genuinely say that Super Tennis is my favourite sports game of all time and I still play it regularly.
I can understand people not wanting to buy this because it really is a collector's item rather than the perfect new way to play Super Mario Bros. It works perfectly well though and all 3 games (or 4 if you count Ball game A and game B as two different games) are fun. I think that anyone who bought this expecting it to be more than what it is probably didn't really understand the product.
For me it's the comic book look of the Japanese version all the way, the Western one was perfectly functional but a bit bland. There were a load of box arts from this era where I thought the more stylised look of the Super Famicom covers were so much better than their Western versions but that's largely due to personal preference.
