As we publish this article E3 attendees are taking final opportunities to conduct interviews and try out new games, including our own dedicated foursome from Nintendo Life; they have a lot more content from the show to share in the coming days. For Nintendo fans at home, however, the event has effectively wrapped up due to the Treehouse Live broadcasts running for two days instead of three.
Yet there was actually a decent amount of news and reveals from Nintendo, especially in light of the initial expectation weeks ago that the whole show would focus on nothing but The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo kicked off its week by revealing Nindie games on the YouTube Gaming show, and committed the second day of the treehouse to varied demos and details. All told, there was plenty for us to enjoy.
We'll be seeking your views on E3 as a whole shortly, but for now we'll start with our 'Big Summary', a format we normally use after Nintendo Direct broadcasts. We'll break things up a little more, though, so you can access the information you want more easily.
Enjoy!

Definitely not the BEST E3 Nintendo has had, but a spectacular one for sure! Even if it was a few games, it was worth watching all those streams. Next year's E3 will probably be amazing considering the NX is coming out. BTW I'm sensing a Nintendo Direct or something of the sort in the near future that will talk about the NX.
It was much, much better than I ever expected it to be, and surprisingly so too after all the hoo-ha about The Legend of Zelda being the 'only thing there'.
THUMBS UP
Anyone else feel that DLC for Mk8 and Mario Maker is dead since this was a good time to announce them?
I've just watched the trailer on the Eshop for Colour Splash ,first time I've seen it. It looks fantastic to me. I've never really played much Paper Mario before but I'll be playing this one for sure if just for those graphics.
Also the Zelda trailer looks so much better through the Eshop. What an experience that games going to be.
Where the ******* bananas is the English version of Mother 3, Nintendo?
Of all the surprises or whatever that anyone wanted, hoped for, and maybe even slightly expected from you at this year's E3—Mother 3.
But, noooooooooo!
Well, I guess at least we did finally get [a somewhat fugly looking] Zelda, another very solid looking new Pokemon title, and a few other random games.
But, Mother 3 . . .
Take it easy with the language - Octane
NO ONE EVER SAID THAT ZELDA WOULD BE THE ONLY GAME AT E3!!!!!
Nintendo said it would be the only PLAYABLE game!
Took off from work for this. Actually don't regret it. Mostly for Zelda. The game looks awesome, though I did feel like 6 hours or whatever it was was a little much. A little spoiled perhaps. I enjoyed it though. Paper Mario is looking real good too....but my distaste for Sticker Star and the toad hunts in the last Mario and Luigi have me cautious
Their strategy largely paid off. But it wasn't without its flaws. The weird pacing of the Treehouse Live sections - That infuriatingly slow Sun and Moon demo (it's Pokemon - we get the premise! A trailer would have sufficed) Zelda of course was the star of the show and that's what was always gonna happen. But it really, really spoke volumes. Nintnedo have nothing else, hardly, to offer the current generation.
@Kirk As I just mentioned, the Zelda trailer looks so much better watching it through the Eshop. Take a look and come back and tell me it's ugly.
Yet again, nothing regarding Yo-kai Watch 2 and the numerous new features and expanded world. Feels like NL is blatantly ignoring it at this point
@OorWullie I've watched all the versions of the trailer and multiple gameplay demos. Visually, it's nothing special, fugly in many ways actually. Gameplay wise, I'm hoping it turns out to be another great Zelda game. But I really expected more flair and polish in the overall presentation and graphics in this flagship Zelda game.
Edit: Well, I can't actually watch it via the eShop, since I don't own a Wii U directly, but I've seen the highest quality versions the Internet has to offer, including Nintendo's own uploaded version of the trailer.
It was 10x better then last year that's for sure.
Paper Mario looks to be a funny time. Wish they bring back the RPG elements.
Pokemon is about what I expected.
Ever Oasis is charming and like other small rpgs (Stella Glow, Bravely series, Fantasy Life, ect) I will be getting it day one.
Zelda Zelda Zelda. Do I even have to say anything about this one. It looks fantastic. Like XCX and Splatoon I can't wait to get my hands on it.
Although I think MS won E3, Nintendo still managed to get me hyped more then Sony and MS.
Also WHERE'S MOTHER 3?
@Kirk You know, you shouldn't believe every rumor Emily Rogers tells us......
@Kirk Some of the textures could really do with some work but I really love the soft water colour look to it all. It's got a classic cartoon look to it that I can't quite put my finger on yet. The part where Link jumps and glides from the cliff is just beatiful. I have no doubt this game is going to be somehting special.I'm just not sure what console I'll be playing it on.
Good job, Nity looks like you survived...for now.
@Kirk @Kirk I can see why Nintendo wanted to keep their presentation on the down-low and expectaions low. The surprises were fairly small. But it was an overall nice presentation.
And no way was Mother 3 getting an official release, ever.
Other than Zelda: BOTW which looks amazing, the E3 was very disappointing. Especially as a Wii U only owner. Not a single new game. Only other Wii U games they showed were Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, a niche, censored, lazily ported game out in a week. And Paper Mario: Colour Splash which, that hasn't exactly gone down well.
No mention of TMS in there. Might be the main thing I'm looking forward to.
Also worth mentioning that Atlus released a new trailer for SMT IV: Apocalypse and it looks like it might be better than all of the other 3DS things featured at the Treehouse
I know TMS and SMT IV:A are the two games I'm looking forward to the most. Also, considering how much TMS seemed to tank in Japan, shouldnt you guys be hyping it up a bit more? Or at least a little.
I don't need another MK8 DLC, but I sure as heck hoped there would be one.
I could sit back and say as a Wii U owner (only) that I wished Big N had announced more games, but the fact of the matter is I have a shelf full of awesome AAA titles by Nintendo for the Wii U. And a growing backlog.
Third party support has been the Wii U's biggest problem and will be so as it fades into console history. That was not going to change at this E3.
Certainly not terrible. The second day was filled with more games, while the first one was only Zelda and Pokemon. I still think Nintendo did not show us enough games, but at least the new Zelda looked really incredible. (Also obligatory 'no Mother 3' rant)
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm with you ,it was very disappointing. I had kind of hoped we would get at least 1 or 2 surprises but it wasn't to be.It just confirmed what we all feared, the Wii U has nothing left.If Paper Mario is October then there must be nothing for the holidays. Surely they would have shown it if they did?
@OorWullie Anybody expecting a surprise for the WiiU really shouldn't have. I still love the console and it's still my go to console, but it's days are numbered. That was made apparent last year.
Awful from Nintendo. They have absolutely nothing worthwhile up their sleeve until the NX comes out and I'm not expecting much more than Zelda when that comes around.
Speaking of Zelda, I just hope it's 10x the game Skyward Sword was because that was terrible with all the repetition and backtracking. It needs to be something special because the last few games in the series sucked. I imagine the cutesy art style will put a fair few gamers off anyway regardless of how good it is.
Really though, where are all the games, where is the NX?? Nintendo really dropped the ball here, nothing to get people excited or hyped for at least another year! And there's no way the NX is going to match the power of the new Sony/Microsoft machines. This is going to be another Wii U, with stupid gimmicks to make up for the lack of power, no decent 3rd party games and Nintendo will fall even further behind their rivals. Sad
Zelda, Pokemon, Yo Kai, Dragon Quest, and Ever Oasis? Yeah I'm more than pleased with this E3.
BotW was awesome! But the rest of the games were boring... (not Pokémon Sun & Moon) and the trailer for Paper Mario: Color Splash was not very detailed. And, of course, I want Mother 3 on the Virtual Console! ASAP!
@liljmoore I know, you're right but I wasn't expecting nothing big,a smaller title for the Eshop perhaps. They have to still have something more planned for Wii U though but then again if they did ,surely they would have shown us.
Only reason I'm not asking for Mother 3 is because up until 2013 when Earthbound dropped, I had no idea the series existed let alone a third game, and from what ive seen of the first two.....meh.
I like Treehouse as something I can tune into at different times during the day when work allows and get deep looks into upcoming games, but it I really missed the Nintendo Direct this year as a way to concisely get all the major announcements in one place. I feel like I missed all kinds of stuff I would have been interested in because I couldn't sit down and watch the stream all day.
@ShikabaneHime13 YoKai Watch 2 videos are in the second day summary links. Another no release date for Europe game.
So no Wario Kart DLC then.
@Sakura I'm more referring to the fact that almost everything else Nimtendo showed directly has an article on the site but by some sheer coinky-dink, YW2 is missing given the in-depth coverage made yesterday on the Treehouse stream
@argh4430 It has better ******* happen at some point, I swear! lol
@OorWullie I just don't think that aspect works with all the other stuff that is at conflict with it. The idea is better than the execution imo.
@Senpai_Bruh I don't even listen to her.
@ShikabaneHime13 I'm sure they'll get to it at some point. Maybe they're waiting for a review copy or confirmation of something. Is Yokai Watch 1 good? It's been a bit lost in the swathe of rpgs on the 3DS for me.
...Even though we got Megamix yesterday, this E3 was still boring...probably the most boring one in a long time.
@OorWullie Hey, if you want check out a great Paper Mario game, you should check out the original! You can get it for a decent price on the eshop, and it's definitely worth it. (I'm loving it so far!)
@Sakura
To me it's good. I see the first game kinda like an introductory point before the added content and improvements of the sequel come into play. The battle system keeps you engaged as it's real time and not turn based but it shines mostly in boss battles instead of casual encounters.
I have all the games in Japanese (importing the third games next month) and am happily double dipping for the English versions as well, so yes, I think of it as a good series overall
And I expected them to do a Day 3 like SquareEnix.
It pretty much was just Zelda tbh...but what a Zelda. The game looks extraordinary!
@ShikabaneHime13 Thanks! I have downloaded the demo, so I should really try it out. 3DS is a great platform.
New Breath of The Wild information:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcY-IMkdKV0
I suppose Nintendo's E3 was decent considering everyone's expectations.
Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks very promising, although it didn't feel like a true "Zelda" title to me... At least not yet.
Pokemon Sun and Moon, like before, looked great. I was very happy to finally see gameplay and I absolutely love the new region.
Ever Oasis was also a really nice surprise. It kind of feels like a lighter Monster Hunter with an Animal Crossing-ish background objective. It's a shame it isn't coming out until 2017.
Everything else was eh. Paper Mario still looks disappointing (for me) and Mario Party Star Rush... I'm very indifferent about. I'm really excited for Tokyo Mirrage Sessions, Monster Hunter Generations, and Dragon Quest VII, but those games have been out I'm Japan for a while now and I've seen plenty of gameplay for them already.
Ultimately, I wouldn't say Nintendo's E3 was great, but I enjoyed bits of it nonetheless.
@PleaseUnderstan Far from it.... DLC sounds perfectly suited to a Nintendo Direct
It was much better than I expected it to be, but it wasn't my favorite E3 either.
I was really hoping for some MK8 DLC (that Tweet with Toad and Wario gave me hope for more DLC), but it looks like that's not the case. Besides Zelda, I'm now interested in MP: Star Rush and Rhythm Heaven as well. And even though it's not Nintendo related... I'm super happy that CRASH IS BACK!!!
@Kirk The new Zelda, fugly? Surely you jest.
@xPH03N1Xx86 I very rarely jest, and this isn't one of those whimsical times.
@Sakura
Fair warning. The demo teally just throws you in without much warning, so let it be known that the demo sucks in its execution but the full game is better
@Yellowkoopa Yet there was a second day dedicated to other games...
Regardless, I'm very pleased with this E3. I can't wait for Paper Mario: Color Splash (cue angry fans) due to it's graphics, music, storyline and gameplay (cue even more angry fans) and Mario Party: Star Rush since I am intrigued as to where the game is heading, regardless if others think it is "bad". I like the music and it actually seems like they're trying to innovate, even if that "innovation" isn't going to be well received by fans.
I feel that Mario Party has to move away from the traditional format since the same game over and over again would get dull and would eventually turn people off and thus result in a loss of sales. I'm sure people will be satisfied with the new Mario Party, I guess we just have to wait and see.
I was shocked by how far Zelda had come since the Game Awards 2014, with a charming artstyle and new gameplay that actually made it engaging to watch, in my eyes. Certainly not the best E3 (it was really slow at points) but not the worst either.
I was also surprised by Capcom showing off Spirit of Justice in English; now we wait for the eShop demo (which cannot be far away, given the fact the demo has clearly been localised at this point).
@Kirk GOOD. Some people just listen to her rumors and treat it like gospel. I was just telling you that because one the things she said was that Mother 3 would be announced.I couldn't tell if you knew that or not.
@thehoppypoppy why did you report your own comment? You know you can delete them yourself right?
@PleaseUnderstan I wish they didn't make that Tweet. I don't think it's dead, tho. My guess is that it will come out around Christmas, with an announcement sometime between Aug. and Oct.
@Danksparce Oops, i thought i did. Sorry, i don't sleep much. :-/
Overall a lame E3 for Nintendo.
With that said, this must be the single greatest E3 to ever go down having just ONE major new title. Wow was Zelda amazing!
Zelda NX
Pikmin 4
Beyond Good & Evil 2
3D Mario
Retro Studios Game (started dev. Dec 2013)
We know these games exist- all of them have been confirmed in development, and we pretty much know they're all NX titles. The fact Ubisoft didn't shoe BG&E2 but confirmed again it's still in development tells us it's definitely NX. They would have shown it otherwise.
So we have some new games to look forward to seeing in a few months, whenever they reveal the NX. THAT is why I'm not really upset about this E3. The delayed reveal screwed this E3.
@Senpai_Bruh Don't know if I recall her saying it or not; I just know I was really hoping Nintendo would get its *** in gear around this whole Mother 3 English translation thing, and I honestly thought E3 was the perfect time for it.
@Kirk Yeah she said something about it. She said it was almost done being translated. Also if Nintendo was releasing Mother 3, E3 would have been a MORE than perfect time to announce it.
So to recap two of the best games made for the Wiiu, and 3DS will be released. Not bad.
This E3 was actually a lot better than I thought it would be, and showed a lot of games I would love to play.
I'm definitely proud to be a dedicated Nintendo fan, even though sometimes it is hard to be, and I can't wait for the NX to finally be revealed and show the games coming to that system.
It wasn't much of an E3 for Nintendo with so few games to show. Zelda looks excellent. The gameplay looks great, but without showing us anything about the story, the villains, other characters or proper dungeons it seemed to lack the spirit of the series. That will probably change as we get more details though so I'm not worried. And the art style is great. It really stands out next to all the realistic games that all look like they're sharing the same graphics.
The only surprise for me was Ever Oasis, which looks fantastic. I like the characters and the desert setting and the dungeon they demoed looked really good. Day one purchase for me.
Apart from that I'm looking forward to DragonQuest, Yokai-Watch and Pokémon but we already knew the were coming so... Bring on the next Nintendo Direct.
@ShikabaneHime13 yokai watch 2 was discussed on the livestream. I watched it.
@bluedogrulez no, it wont but bloodstained and Yooka laylee will be the swansongs of this unique system, at least its not as bad as the PS Vita
@MarinoKadame they did but it was a recap and streamed via nico nico
Very pleased with Nintendo's E3. Makes you glad that they announced that their E3 would be smaller, eh? And it's great that we got some surprises out of it too! Not their best E3 but a step waaaaaay up over their 2015 one!
@Senpai_Bruh but I do love surprises and the next direct is usually the clean up.
@TheDavyStar call me crazy but I love the livestream coverage, it does something that the directs cant perform, "detailed analysis"
so I found out why Paper Mario is like what it is and why Mario luigi exists, and I'm fine with that.
anything beats 30 sec footage and have youtubers voice rage for clicks.
@JaxonH if this is just the line up for NX I'm gonna get spoiled, I can safely NOT regret purchasing NX for Zelda: Breath of the wild.
I was star struck!
@Nomad Ever oasis is done by a ex square dev, geez Nintendo, I know you loved Square before she ran into the money grubbing arms of Sony but I'm glad you picked up a vet from FF1-3
next time, see if you can get a steam punk RPG like FFVI
This E3 for Nintendo would be acceptable, if Zelda were coming in 2016.
@ShikabaneHime13 Thanks again! Demos are weird things, always hit and miss. I'll certainly bear that in mind.
Now that Zelda is out of the way, Nintendo can start talking about the NX. Hurray!
A fair few things that I'm excited for from this E3. Zelda looked fantastic. Dragon Quest VII and Ever Oasis looking good too, though we do have enough rpgs as it is. Pokemon Go! looked great for kids (and big kids) so I'm hoping that will act as a hook to get people interested in Nintendo. More purchases, more games! Colour Splash (yes, colour!) was not as poorly received as had been thought. Lego Dimensions has some excellent franchises coming - Gremlins, Goonies, Mr T.
Some niggles. NX clues were not that encouraging. Ubisoft thinks it can recapture casual and Reggie says content is more important than specs. I'd tend to agree with Reggie, but NX needs third party so I hope it's powerful enough. I hoping for epic, not casual. Please let it be both. Not holding my breath though.
I used this E3 to check out whether it would be a good idea to purchase Xbox or PS4. Xbox might be superfluous as it looks like many games will also be on Windows, although they might run better on the Scorpio. PS4 had a broader range of titles and gets some great exclusive content for multiplats. Overall though, the games available don't resonate as well as do those from Nintendo. I need my violence sanitised. Ideally, I'd like all 3 consoles. That's not happening yet.
There's a new Star Trek game...for VR. It's not like Star Trek games have ever been epic, but I did enjoy the point and click puzzle adventures from the early days. I hope that traditional games will still be made if VR takes off well.
It's great to have everything here in one article. Thanks to Nlife for that. And for the coverage.
