Nintendo just loves to tease fans in regards to The Legend of Zelda series. Case in point, development of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D was begun in 2011, yet Nintendo opted to not outright inform gamers of this, choosing instead to lead them on by subtle hints in interviews and occasional easter eggs in games. In light of recent events, it seems that Nintendo is keen to continue this trend.
Yesterday, a “Miiting" was performed on Miiverse that interviewed the Happy Mask Salesman from Majora's Mask 3D. The interview was fittingly quirky and off-the-wall, though most of the information covered was previously known. One comment, however, stuck out in particular and seemed to hint at something greater on the horizon.
My, my... I've certainly been appearing all over the place these past few days! If this keeps going, maybe it wouldn't be a stretch to expect me to pop up in a new Zelda game, too...? Ho, ho, ho... I've got some new masks, too, if you'd like to try them on... If I do make an appearance, I'm sure everyone will experience such happiness! Believe in your strengths... Believe... Ho, ho, ho...
This mysterious comment could mean a vast amount of possibilities. It could perhaps be something as simple as a hint at the Happy Mask Salesman appearing in some future DLC for Hyrule Warriors or it could be in reference to him making an appearance in the upcoming Legend of Zelda Wii U.
The most outlandish, though entirely possible, takeaway could be a hint at a brand new, unannounced Zelda. Given the Happy Mask Salesman's strong association with Majora's Mask and the “I've got some new masks, too" quote, it does make one wonder about the possibly of a Majora's Mask sequel. Given that Majora's Mask 3D was the series' fastest selling handheld title to date, the popularity of the unique gameplay pioneered here could certainly be worth another visit in a new entry.
Whatever the outcome, it's a pretty safe bet that this ambiguous comment wasn't made without there being some deeper meaning. It'll be interesting to see what becomes of this in the near future.

Dang, stuff like that doesn't just get thrown in for no reason. Now I'm all intruiged! It'd be awesome to see a new 3D Zelda game for the 3DS following along with Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D! Maybe a sequel to Majora's Mask to continue that timeline a bit or something? I don't know. That's definetly an interesting comment though!
The possibilities are endless
I could definitely see this being a hint at a Majora's Mask 2. A modern game with the time traveling and mask transformation mechanics could be a real home-run if they did it right. While Majora's Mask was a fantastic game as it was, imagine a game in the same style on HD hardware. A bigger, more detailed world, more complex NPC schedules and personalities, more mask transformations, more dungeons. Basically, just more! I have no doubt that Nintendo could deliver on the hype and create a sequel that stands above the bar set by Majora's Mask. The real question is: will they do it?
I still don't have MM3D...
There's little to no way that it's hinting at the Happy Mask Salesman being DLC for Hyrule Warriors, because the Majora's Mask pack is already out. The only way I see this happening, is if they release a pack that features major, non playable characters and features The Happy Mask Salesman with some others that I can't think of off of the top of my head.
I think that it is more likely that it's hinting at The Happy Mask Salesman will appear in the new Zelda game on Wii U. I think either as a Sidequest as he was in Ocarina of Time, or maybe he has a shop, like in Ocarina of Time, but instead of Sidequesting, the player can buy or rent certain masks, at anytime, to enforce the go anywhere, anytime aspect of the new Zelda game, like in A Link Between Worlds with Ravio's Shop...
Wasn't it announced somewhere that Hyrule Warrior already has all the DLC done now? Maybe this was just something I misread somewhere.
Majoras Mask 2 on home console would be awesome... but considering the cycle of Zelda games in general, not gonna happen. As if my New3DS didn't have enough to play already...
Please be more Hyrule Warriors DLC!
@Timppis Maybe Majora's Mask 2 as a launch title for Nintendo's next home console???
@Timppis Yeah, if it were to be a new game, it would definitely be a 3DS release. Nothing like a great Zelda game for the swansong!
@Takerkaneanite6
Im still in the high hopes that the next Ninty console will be the rumoured Hybrid of handheld and homeconsole... Majoras Mask 2 as a launch title on that one would be just too much for the nostalgic kid in me
I think it could be cool to do a Majora sequel, but in the style of Link Between Worlds. I mean, Majora's Mask was in Ravio's shop. A 2D, handheld sequel to MM3D would be awesome. I hope that's what he's hinting at, as I'm not sure I really want Zelda on Wii U to feature the mask gameplay. I really want them to do mostly new things for that game rather than to retread down paths that made other games unique. Zelda U needs to carve out its own path in the series.
I just realised something. Epona only appeared as a rideable horse in the Child Timeline. Right? And the Happy Mask Salesman only appears in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. If I'm not mistaken. Please correct me if I'm wrong with that last statement. So what if the new Zelda game on Wii U, takes place right after Majora's Mask? And the Happy Mask Salesman makes an appearance in the new Zelda game and opens a Mask Shop in the new game and when Link first visits the shop, he remembers Link and gives Link a free mask, as appreciation for what Link did for the Happy Mask Salesman in Majora's Mask, then he tells Link that he can buy any mask that Link wishes to, anytime he wishes and introduces his new collection of Masks.
Maybe I've gone way too far with this idea........
@Timppis Majora's Mask 2 will be that Killer App that Nintendo needs on their new console. The bonus being that it would be a launch title, so you wouldn't have to wait at all for that great game to come...
I've always liked the idea of this Zelda game visiting previous games, perhaps reunifying the 3 pronged timeline. The mask salesman could fit very well into this.
@Takerkaneanite6 hmm you are kinda on to something there but it sounds too simple yet something that could happen while everyone else is throwing out ideas :S
My guess is that it is going to be a cameo or a side quest like in OOT. I personally do not want a direct sequel to MM
That comment alone can bring so much hype, theories, possibilities and even what could end up as a really crazy sequel 0_0(i kinda had thought about this a few weeks ago when MM was coming out how weird) i mean i can just imagine a sequel to it and i already have my mind blasting with gaming ideas they could do but as @EvisceratorX said just more everything would be what the sequel would be about.... if there is any chance i would love to see this in the next home console or even at the end of wii u
jumping back to reality though this would probably be some sort of cameo like in OOT or some how you find a random mask as a side quest and the salesman is mentioned when you give it to a hyrulian for a quest or what ever :/ or some random dlc for smash bros?
@DarkNinja9 Are you saying that I made sense??? Reading it back, I just felt like I was taking a shot in the dark.........XD
Hopefully Tingle will return but maybe in a WW way maybe a fully fledged 3D (Not 2D) sequel which includes New Hyrule and the Great Sea.
I just made a thread about this yesterday. Oh well.
It doesn't look like he'll be in Hyrule Warriors, given that all the DLC is done...which sucks because him being in it would be awesome (seriously, all we're missing is him and Groose), but oh well. I'd definitely play a Majora's Mask sequel if they decided to do one. Heck, Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game, so why not? Still, I think that it's most likely he'll be appearing in the Wii U game.
I would be okay with him making an appearance in Zelda U, MM wasn't the only game he appeared in. Regardless, I still want more info on the Wii U Zelda instead of stuff about a mask salesman who, while very goofy, is tertiarily important in most Zelda games.
Given Grezzo's 3D remake experience, Nintendo ought to let them make an entirely new 3D Zelda game that completes a Ocarina of Time trilogy. Having found a way to return from Termina after being victorious over Majora's Mask, Link finds Hyrule in a state of chaos hundreds of years later. Vaati has taken over and is the puppet of a new villain who pulls strings behind the scenes, misusing the happiness he has robbed from the masks he has pushed on countless of realms denizens. The mask salesman is really the Time Destroyer... All he has wanted was to take the Ocarina and rule Time itself. The game could start in Termina with Link seeking a way back to Hyrule, after smashing four dungeons he faces a final challenge and returns to Hyrule, credits roll and then..... Surprise Master Quest now Link is back in Hyrule hundreds of years after OoT with four final dungeons and dungeon masters to battle all culminating with a face off with the Happy Mask Salesman who is truly the Time Destroyer.
Vaati could be in Termina and be the midgame enemy.
Given that Majora's Mask 3D was the series' fastest selling handheld title to date, the popularity of the unique gameplay pioneered here could certainly be worth another visit in a new entry
Wait, so the Happy Mask Salesman on Miiverse is a verified user? If he is, I haven't noticed.
Anyways, he's an awesome character, so seeing him in the next Zelda game would—because duh—also be awesome!
Or Majora's Mask 2. °ˇ°
Been saying there should be a final hero of time story. Perhaps having him traveling though different points in hyrules history or jumping between kid, teen and adult link
Kudos for the Mr. Bones' Wild Ride reference!
If it's an actual hint and not just a joke, this is about Zelda U. (Unless there is an another game already in development)
His own truly disturbing game explaining where the hell he actually got all the masks would be fantastic!
I've been completely in love with the atmosphere of Majora's Mask for the past few days. It was one of the few Zeldas I'd never played, and it always intrigued me... and now I'm enjoying every minute of the experience.
Which is to say: anything that resembles this kind of mood will be a most welcome addition to any future games in the franchise for me.
I hope we can get a sequel to Majora's Mask or just something that explains the salesman's origins. He's one of the most interesting and creepy characters in the series. Who really is he? Where is he from? How does he reset time if you run out?
There's a lot more to him than meets the eye, that's for sure. It's a shame MM never went into detail with a lot of characters/places in the series. I wanted to know more about Majora's past and what it truly is, who/what the Fierce Diety is (possibly an arch-nemesis of Majora?), the salesman, Termina itself, and more. In the manga (non-canon) the salesman is strongly hinted to not be human and is conspiring something evil to the point that Link tries attacking him.
Damn it, Nintendo...
@Malus
I would like a game that revealed that info as well. The Happy Mask salesman is realy one of Nintendo's most interesting characters when you think about it.
Very unlikely its a sequel for Majora's mask, but Aounama does like to add elements of various games when he works in multiple titles. In this case he said he was gonna grab elements from Hyrule Warriors for Zelda Wii U like the boss battle in open field or the quality of the cutscenes. We just have to wait and see now.
I'm all for it, especially with that comment about new masks. And I hope that doesn't just mean more HW DLC, I want him in an actual new Zelda game in one form or another...
Now this is the kind of news that I love to see~
Do you remember what he said and the end of the game? Of course we'll see him again, we just don't know in wich reincarntion
@NintyMan He could, maybe he could have shop in the game. People want a Robin Williams NPC in the game, they coud have a Robin Williams Mask in the game...
Having him in the new Zelda would be great, but the idea of Majora's Mask 2 is incredible.
Interesting. This franchise needs more Happy Mask Salesman. Scratch that, this franchise needs Zelda to be playable through the game (not like Spirit Tracks).
Would be nice if its part of a new 3DS game. I've wanted to see what they could do with the 3DS graphics in a full 3D zelda game (that isnt a remake) generally speaking we tend to get 2 new zelda games per generation of hand helds. So I'm hoping that they have been developing one in secret similarly to what they did on the DS. If it is something to do with zelda U then fair enough. But the promise of a new 3D zelda for handheld sounds good to me!
I doubt we'll get a Majora's Mask sequel, but it would be really awesome. Playing it again for the first time in years makes me realize how many mechanics (mostly in the form of masks) just didn't get used to their fullest. I'd like to see a game that uses basically the whole existing set--even if you've got to re-collect them or something--in new ways, and with many of them used for more than a single piece of heart.
HMSM will be a character in LoZWiiU. Suppossedly the game is vast in scope. Sure its goingto feature hhundreds of NPC. Most likely as usual very familar faces. Tingle is going to make a return. Agatha, shoot, I bet groose makes a reapperence, along with new faces. Weve seen very little of Zelda wii u for any talk of a new Zelda game already.
@NintendoFan64 the first season of DLC is done, he could be in the second season.
Possibly the next Zelda 3ds game, just sayin'
You've been met with a terrible fate
A new zelda game with masks as a core part of the gameplay sounds like a winner to me! Doubt it will happen though since Nintendo usually doesn't make straight sequels to their Zelda games, barring some exceptions.
MM2 or Happy Mask Salesman getting his own game, like Tingle...?
If this is a teaser for an appearance in Zelda Wii U, it would be really cool.
If this is a teaser for a new Hyrule Warriors DLC... please give me a break.
Has to be zelda wii u - as an open world game the scope for side quests will be massive and The Happy Mask salesman would fit into a skyrim style structure very well indeed. He's met with an inevitable fate, hasn't he?
Hmm, probably won't amount to anything. Nintendo loves to mention new stuff, then pretend like they never said anything. I won't get excited until I see screenshots! Also, why is MM3D selling so much better than Link Between Worlds? I really liked that game, it was a great mix of new and old.
@Funbunz Majora's Mask had a 3 year period of hype. Personally, I enjoyed Link Between Worlds more, but I can't deny that Majora's Mask was much more heavily demanded.
I'm guessing a brand new game featuring [new transformation] masks will be out in the near future, as in the launch of the next handheld, quite fittingly imo.. Although, I'm kinda wishing we'd get a HD home console Zelda game that has the masks. I really want some more gameplay and background on Fierce Deity, which I've always found to be as one of those more mysterious and intruiging (not to mention bad ass) elements in the franchise that left me longing for more.
In the end, this could simply mean that the Happy Mask Salesman will make an appearance and play a relatively important role in Zelda U. Perhaps there'll be a section of the game that focuses on a certain transformation. I wouldn't mind that, as long as they balance it well and make it suitable to the general plot and setting and what not.
Who knows...what Nintendo is gonna do. That's why I love Zelda in general, they don't tell you anything or only give you a nibble but hell, you don't mind.
...please no Majora's Mask 2... Majora's Mask benefits greatly from its sense of mystery. Leave questions up to speculation. I wouldn't mind seeing the mechanics of Majora's Mask experimented with, but significant differences would be necessary. Just copying the most unique Zelda game would cheapen the original...
I think it'll happen!
"Believe in your strenght...Believe!"
@Takerkaneanite6
Don't kid yourself that the Epona in Twilight Princess is the same horse from OoT and MM. (Link has a horse in the cut scenes of the Oracle games too).
This is more a logistical reason as the horses have only been in the 3d Zelda games with large connected landmasses, WW and SS did things differently.
A Ravio style mask system would be cool in the new game though! I'm all for items/masks which confer unique abilities!
@Timppis Not sure this is exactly true, all of the DLC planned to be included within the Season Pass has been released. They may have felt the sales were successful enough to warrant the development of more, if so... Groose and Happy Mask Salesmen would be solid candidates, I wonder if they would redesign Cell Shaded characters to fit with HW? If so Medli, Makar, Linebeck and Byrne might be candidates too!
I don't think we should be jumping the gun saying that there's a sequel to Majora's Mask. Would Nintendo really come out and say "Hey guys, we're releasing this new Zelda game without any proper announcement".
Just look at what he says, hinting at a new Zelda game, and say's "Ho, ho, ho" not once but twice. What games do we know that's coming out during the Holidays of this year? Zelda Wii U. Many people have already pointed out the similarities the game already has with Twilight Princess. We even have a horse that looks like Epona. If the timeline holds any truth then Zelda Wii U takes place in the Child era which Majora's Mask is also taken place. Zelda Wii U will either take place after Majora's Mask where he could make an appearance, or takes place after Twilight Princess.
The most likely and easiest to do for Nintendo would be Hyrule Warriors DLC.
Although as many have pointed out, the new Zelda for Wii U will probably take place in the Majora/Twilight timeline, so it wouldn't be too far out for him to make an appearance.
@AJWolfTill I think you misunderstood me. I meant that every time that the horse that the player can physically use in the game is confirmed as Epona, it has always, or at least mostly, been rideable in the child timeline of the offical Zelda Timeline...
I was never convinced the Happy Mask Salesman was evil, manga not withstanding.
I'm really hoping that this is hinting towards Zelda U. I've been saying from the start that it could very well be a sequel to Majora's Mask in some sort of manner. I'm excited to see either way.
I hope this isn't about Hyrule Warriors DLC, but a new Zelda game.
Hyrule warriors DLC is over. It could have been part of the Majora's mask pack, but that wasn't the case. No, I really think they mean Zelda u.
