In a recent interview, Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori of Game Freak discussed various elements of the upcoming Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, and one such discussion revealed the unfortunate detail that the new Mega Evolutions won't be appearing in Pokémon X & Y.
Whilst these two new titles will be compatible with X & Y in a currently unknown capacity – although it's likely that trading and battling with restrictions will be the main features – it appears that the developer has decided not to include these new monsters in the previous title.
It seems a strange move given that downloadable patches are such a staple in modern gaming, but it's clear that Game Freak has its reasons for forgoing this opportunity to breathe new life into their older title.
Are you disappointed by this turn of events, or will you be too focused on the new remakes to notice? Let's hear your thoughts in the comments!

That's... really weird and extremely disappointing. I like being able to have all options at the ready.
and they shouldn't either, if they did it would change the whole balance of the games
Welp, I guess ORAS will be the new center of Gen 6.
People thought this would happen?
That's extremely disappointing, ever since Fire red and leaf green they've always allowed trades of ALL pokemon from new generations ETC. WHAT A HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT !!!
@sanderevers true that's what will more than Likely happen.
However weren't mega Latias and latios found in x and y by a hacker !?
Edit: http://kotaku.com/three-new-mysterious-pokemon-discovered-in-x-y-1456798172
Well that's just dumb.
It's almost getting to the stage where Nintendo/Game Freak should split pokemon development into different modules. One module for the rules that governs pokemon and the other that governs the adventure in the game. That way when they make changes like Mega Evolution it would work across the board in that game generation.
I wasn't even expecting it to. It was never an issue with the old games, so it shouldn't be an issue with X and Y either.
Not surprising at all.
Why is that even surprising ?
Bring your X/Y mons over and good. Red and Blue werent "updated" (rereleased) because Gold / Silver introduced new stuff.
@SanderEvers I was thinking the same thing, you're most likely right. It's clear now they intend to release a Z version. When that happens, XY will officially be obsolete.
Meh!
Well pokemon is a one time thing so if I have played a game I want go back and play it anymore so it really doesn't matter that x and y don't get the new mega's I mean the collecting dust
@FullbringIchigo [Insert non Gen 1 Pokemon here] was never was added to Red & Blue, I never assumed any new content from this game would be patched back to any old games, just like every new content for every new game. Why would they do it? Why would anyone ever expect it?
I so totally saw this coming. Kinda saddening.
I would be sad if I didn't dislike X/Y with a burning passion.
Can't really say i'm suprised. They've been putting in new forms of Pokemon that wouldn't work in previous, earlier games in the same gen since 4th gen.
@MadAdam81 @Einherjar Well, this is within the same Generation unlike Red/Blue and Gold/Silver. X/Y will most likely be able to battle with ORAS, and players will feel cheated that they have 30% of Mega Evolutions options than their opponent.
@UltraLaserTen Giritina or however you spell it, Shaymin and Rotom forms. That's all I can think of that have other forms in later 4th generation games than Diamond and Pearl that couldn't access them. That is so few compared to the massive expansion of Megas that these Pokemon titles are heavily focusing on. I say it would be fair of the Megas in X and Y are exclusive only to those games.
@UltraLaserTen actually they would work statwise, they just wouldn't alter the graphics for them on the older games. I assume this is how it's gonna work with the new megas also since they're essentially formes with a different name. Still disappointing tho
The only reason Nintendo doesn't patch XY for better compatibility with ORAS is because they want people to buy the latter. Patching an older game -as neat as that would have been- won't give them nearly as much money. It's all -and it's always been- about money, people!
@SanderEvers good point, makes alot of sense.
Does anybody not remember how they handled this in the past?
For example.. diamond, pearl, and then platinum and HGSS..
If you were using a rotom-wash in platinum, versus a player playing diamond/pearl, on their screen it would just look like a normal rotom.
It could likely be the same here.. the megas are there just their models won't be shown in x/y or their stones traded.
Wait, what?! That's some major bull! That means X/Y won't be fully compatible with OR/AS despite being the same generation of Pokémon games!
Okay, that means I'm more than just out of this. That's a really unfair move from GF, even when keeping in mind that Giratina's origin form wasn't available to D/P, either (which also was kinda unfair and short-sighted).
I really prefer it that way. More of an incentive to buy the new games and set them apart a little.
Wait so does this mean that XY won't even recognize the new megas?
Disappointing News
Well that's to be expected. Everyone will/can just migrate everything to ORAS anyway. Why would they wanna move backwards?
I'm in the "meh" camp here, I mean honestly what did people expect? On the subject of X/Y though, I haven't really kept up to date on any news, but I'm guessing they never ended up releasing any DLC etc like some predicted they would? Just seemed a bit weird with all those references to other areas within the game, like doors you couldn't open and the guy who talks about coming from a land that nobody has seen before (or something like that, I'd have to look it up to get the exact wording). Did nobody ever get to the bottom of these?
EDIT: never mind, 5 seconds on Google has indicated that nothing has been solved yet. Will be a major disappointment if they just leave it at that...
Whut? Aren't these games supposed to be part of the same Pokemon generation? They're effectively making X and Y obsolete and forcing fans to buy the remakes. And before anyone attempts to draw parallels to Nintendo's New 3DS, IT AIN'T THE SAME.
@Kaze_Memaryu
Except the DS games have the excuse of being so archaic that they can't be patched. These ganes are modern; they could make a patch to make the old games more compatible with the remakes if they want. Instead they decided to abandon XY, sit back in their chairs and wait as the money trucks dump fresh bills all over them.
@AVahne Yeah, it's awful. I can see them not wanting to lose profit through people who just get the new Pokés through trading, but it's still a terrible practice, and it merely convinced me even more to not get the new editions.
Knew it, this will make X&Y more pointless now that the remakes have more content and Pokémon.
Reason: "We gotta cash in that vacation time!"
This article also fails to mention that there is ZERO Trainer Customzation in the remakes.
So, what we have here is a game you are REQUIRED the buy if you wanna enjoy any of the new mega evolution while also giving up making your OWN CHARACTER - let alone the ability to choose your own SKIN COLOR which I;m sure will upset plenty of non-Caucasian fans.
To ANYONE who thinks this is an acceptable move, you are dead wrong - and why? Because any remotely competitive player was already going to buy this game - it doesn't matter if they KEEP playing it...it matters that they buy it in the first place.
My initial plan for example was to stay in XY because it has trainer customization + there's no battle frontier it seems, so I had no intensive to transfer unless they had the Battle Frontier - They still had my money but I wanted to keep XY relevant... but no, now that megas wont be updated - Which there is NO EXCUSE for... I HAVE to transfer, and guve up my customized character so that when we do wifi battles or multi battles on The Silver League, what we see is 1 Brandon and 3 Mays.
Back in Generation 4 when updates like Plat happened, DP got the shaft but you know what? It only had to deal with 3 Pokemon, Rotom, Giratina and Shaymin, and 2 of those Pokemon at the time were Uber, so its not like a competitve player would ever SEE those Pokemon thus be confused what's going on.
But also...that game came out 2-3 years AFTER DPs release, ORAS? 13 Months after XY and it has SOOOO much new content that shakes up the meta game that making XY obsolete is unacceptable because you're punishing people who have a passion for your game but are not interested in ORAS because for whatever reason..it just doesn't tickle their fancy.
But if they play competitve they have no choice now because even if they somehow got the new Mega Stones..they wouldn't be able to SEE the new megas, let alone any other surprises they have leaving in wait.
This is like not paying for the Mario Kart 8 DLC and being punished for it by not seeing the track until you pony up the money for it.
XY is only 13 years old and come Nov 21st its gonna be completely obsolete, hell they might as well stop printing the game because NO ONE will buy it now if they can't even go online and see what they're facing. - That's the big difference here...the game isn't old and we're losing a feature that truly felt like a sign that we've entered a new generation - It's a double whammy of bad, because both sides in some way get effected by this, and it sucks - it's not the end of the world and either way Gamefreak has my money...but it sucks, and the most I can do is let them know my opinion, which I intend to do once I find a way to give them my direct feedback, not just a club nintendo registration questionnaire.
@Silver_August Agreed. What i said and thought, but you wrote more in-depth. Also, XY is 13 YEARS OLD? XD
@Porky I believe you mean months, but if thats the case, then yes, XY came out October last year, around this time as a matter a fact
God damn it! My fears about these remakes have been realized. This is the same crap they've pulled when Ruby and Sapphire first came out! Remember how you couldn't send your Pokemon from G/S/C to R/S? Yeah, this is more or less the same crap. They're just unnecessarily removing features from the previous games! This move makes X/Y irrelevant.Think about it, if you go online with X/Y and fight somebody with a copy of ORAS and they use these new OP Megas, you'll get destroyed. I'll never understand why Game Freak would make Pokemon X/Y irrelevant. X/Y are the best selling 3DS games out there and is the most refreshing Nintendo games they've released in recent years and it's not even a year old and they're already making this game irrelevant. And it's not like they have to do this; like the article says: "It seems a strange move given that downloadable patches are such a staple in modern gaming." like they can do it but they're choosing not to. Why? You know, There's a reason (This just being a few of them) why alot of people (Believe it or not.) hail Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire as the worst mainstream games in the Pokemon series. It's because they subtracted content more so then adding content. Gone was the phone from G/S/C. Gone was the day and night transitions. Gone was EXPLORING 2 REGIONS! Gone was the challenge. Gone was the internal clock. Ok, in fairness, there was an internal clock build into R/S, but it was as invisible as Carbon Monoxide. It was completely pointless and barely did anything other than making berries grow.
As I was writing this complaint, I just found out that they're also removing the trainer customizations from ORAS..........Omg. Do I have to kick a dead horse?.... Yeah, I do. Why the Hell did they not include this feature in these damned remakes?! Why? That makes no sense. Why intentionally remove a VERY liked and appreciated feature from the last games??? Why? Someone please explain that backwards crap to me! Ughhhh. 'Sigh'.... What a piece of bad news to read... How is this going to work? In the code of Pokemon X and Y, Mega Latios and Mega Latias were in the game. So you could literally use those Megas in X/Y. So... Could I trade the Mega Lats over to X/Y but not other Megas like Mega Pidgeot or Mega Metagross? 'Sigh' You know, I was fairly excited for Pokemon ORAS. Even though R/S are the most underwhelming games in the series. (Minus spin-offs of course.) It doesn't mean I despise these two games. But this rather big piece of news has now made me second think about buying AS. Great job Game Freak. Just when I think you're on the right path with games like B/W to X/Y you pull this crap (that I thought was gone like the wind.) again. Way to go. 'Sigh'
XY will still be relevant in the sense that it's extremely likely you won't be able to get any of the three Kalos starters, the legendary XYZ trio, the three elemental birds and Mewtwo in ORAS (so you'd need to export them from XY).
If I've made any grammatical errors then apologizes in advance. It's kind of difficult to write something like this when you're absolutely livid. I'm writing this because I don't feel like revising what I've wrote. But, If I did make any errors, correct me. So that I hopefully won't make them again in the future. Thanks.
@ColdingLight : "Why intentionally remove a VERY liked and appreciated feature from the last games??? Why?"
In an interview, the director/producer/whatever said that they did it because "Brendan and May are established characters", and they don't want anyone to change their looks. Yeah, that "reason" is bullcrap at best, but what can you do?
This news makes me think Game Freak has more in store for Kalos. But with all the new features they're adding to ORAS, they'll have to do a lot in "Pokémon Z" or the equivalent to make it worth buying.
I dont understand about all the fuss. Just stop playing X and Y and transfer all your favorite pokemon or just every single one into the bank. I know it feels like they are forcing people to buy the newer game but that is like complaining about a new iphone coming out.
@ZNemerald
That doesn't solve the lack of character customization in ORAS, though.
My guess is that this is mainly to push XY players towards getting ORAS. It's fairly annoying, but probably won't affect me that much.
@Silver_August
"and 2 of those Pokemon at the time were Uber, so its not like a competitve player would ever SEE those Pokemon"
That tier only applies to simulators.
Its never the less note worthy because both of these Pokemon couldn't be used in the Battle Tower or Frontiers anyways, so even if you didn't play competitve, you couldnt use them in anytihng besides casual play with local friends
And Yes Brandon/;May were characters... in the manga - like no, if they're established characters, why are we allowed to name them? Wes and Michael from GC games were established characters but the point of Pokemon is its OUR adventure, we pick and build our own teams, not play in someone else's shoes
I understand people's disappointment, but at the same time I can understand why Gamefreak feel it necessary not to patch in the new Mega Evolutions.. a lot of people would simply get their friends to clone in the new Mega Stones & then transfer them back to X&Y... completely negating the need to buy ORAS.
It's a bigger issue than before, though. In earlier games you had a few Pokémon that had new forms later on in a generation, but now literally dozens of Pokémon might have new Mega Evolutions.
WOW Gamefreak... way to make X and Y artificially obsolete. I can't say I'm surprised, but that's something they're more than capable of and should be doing in this day and age. This is just really... URGH.
So wait there can't be a Mega Swampert in X and Y (Not hacked), can someone reply to me with a @ please?
@Raghav That's what they said.
This is no surprise and I could care less. But I disagree that this had made X/Y obsolete.
I was subconsciously expecting them to be tradeable, but now that I actually think about it it makes a lot of sense development (and sales) wise. I was buying anyway so I don't really care.
This is disappointing, but honestly expected. Pokemon's been able to get away with things like this for a while now. My only question is, how the heck are you supposed to maintain compatibility with X/Y without patching the game? I get that in previous generations the Pokemon would simply use the same sprite as the non-transformed one, and change stats to match the new form, but previous generations also didn't add in new moves and abilities mid-generation- every move and ability used in the later games of a generation were hidden in the code of the first game. But that's not the case with this generation.
OR/AS is adding at least three new abilities and moves into the mix, for the main legends, and possibly more as far as we know. I suppose it's possible that the battle system is set up in such a way that the only important part is that the damage is calculated correctly on both games, but how about trading these Pokemon between games? Will you be able to send a Rayquaza that knows Dragon's Ascent over to X/Y? I just can't see that working out without the patch, and that point why not go all the way. You have the resources to make these compatibility issues a thing of the past, but you choose not to simply because it'll make you more money.
Not even sure if they've ever allowed moving a Pokemon backwards into previous titles anyway. I can see why everyone's outraged but it's kind of been the same for a while, and probably won't end up changing.
Sad, but doesn't surprise me.
I imagine it'll be the same way as the spikey-eared pichu was with Diamond and Pearl.
im EXTREMELY disappointed, WTF GAME FREAK!!!
I just expected that you would be able to trade the new mega between both games. I'm a bit sadden by this news.
What if Pokémon Z will only be compatible with the New 3ds?!!!! Doubt it because it's the same generation. Maybe gen. 7
Nintendo's garbage after market support strikes again!
And to no one's surprise, Game Freak continues the path of Nintendo's most uninspired and laziest developer.
Ok, surprise and not surprise, but then, "if there will be no patch" for X & Y, How the Pokemon battles between X & Y with Ruby & Sapphire will work, because some new Mega Pokemon change abilities and types, if this info is not avalible in X & Y?
I really hoped for it, but never actually thought it would work out.
Still disappointed really.
I wouldn't say it would make X & Y obsolete. For 1 we have to trade diancie over from X & Y if we want mega diancie so trading still seem to be possible. You'll prolly just won't be able to trade a pokemon from ORAS if its holding an unfamiliar mega stone. But we don't know all the pokemon that's available to be caught so we can trade pokemon from X & Y to ORAS such as gen 6 pokemon.
Why do people think Pokemon Z is a thing? We never got a Pokemon Gray in the last gen. When is the last time there was a third game?
@Silver_August
I think they mean more in a canonical sense. When your playing the game its your story, but when they're telling it they use the default names. Basically, its the same deal as with Link.
Brandon and may were actually just "Ruby" and "Sapphire" in the manga by the way.
As for no customization due to being 'established' characters, they kinda blew that when they altered their design and switched to the more generic look from X&Y. I'm not too bothered by it, but why not just make their clothes the default set?
@Silver_August
You just seem to be mixing up "competitive" play with "smogon" play. That's all. They sometimes overlap, but the former is not the latter.
This is kind of messed up,It was acceptable back in crystal x red/blue days cause of the tech back then but now with dlc and updates and stuff,this seems incorrect and if they are going to make pokemon z which by all means is a dumb idea just to make it the crystal of this era,by all means I love crystal but who needs 3 versions of the same game this days with patching.Seems will be constraint to battle and trading with restrictions,and if not a lot of x&y people will cry when they online battle the new megas but cant have them.
@GeminiSaint That's like saying Pearl is still relevant because it's the only game in the main series where you can get a Glameow.
@Punished_Boss Agreed... Though it's kinda disappointing considering that they actually can patch these in for the first time and these are games a year later in the same generation!
@Drawdler
Who knows? Maybe they'll make Glameow available in ORAS? It could happen.
I understand why they did this: if there are, say, 15 new megas in ORAS, then if they patched XY to have these new megas without adding the mega stone locations then it would be unfair for people who get XY to have to get ORAS to experience the full content.
So in the next World Championships, everyone plays with a copy of ORAS? Unless all the Mega Evolutions and stuff sucks. How about patching X&Y?
@seb5049
Well, yeah? That's how gaming works. You gotta pay for the new stuff.
This is upsetting but EA charging full price to shuffle their rosters and change up some logos is worth 60$..?
Sad.
Gamers are becoming penny pinching pantywaists.
Everything is soooo terrible.
How can we even live??
My. God.
The fact Nintendo supports X / Y for months with content updates and new stuff is near genre breaking in and of itself.
You guys do realize there are two versions of MH4 and 3 versions of Yokai Watch 2 out, right??
EVERY COMPANY DOES THIS.
Get with the times?
They ARE with the times.
The times are this: new version to invalidate the old. Retailer exclusive content and DLC. Abandoning an old game to support a new one.
Sonic the Lost World is cheaper on the eShop.
Why? Sonic Boom.
Get with the times people. Nintendo and Gamefreak are on to the next one. That's where money is. Because (repeat after me) new games sell systems.
The funny thing to me: this is a European site. European preorders are higher for the new games than X/Y. So a bunch of the 'super attached' X/Y battlers will complain but it's obviously making money. More than the last ones.
Make money vs spend a bunch of time patching an older game that no one is willing to spend money on (Pokemon and DLC, get serious, you wouldn't buy it). It's a BUSINESS.
Is this not obvious through the financial reports, sales figures and quarterly projections?
They should sell DLC for Pokemon X and Y allowing those games to use content for Pokemon ORAS and make any new content for Pokemon ORAS available to purchase for X and Y as well.
That way, for example, I could bring my cosplay Pikachu into Y if I feel like it. I could also bring in new mega evolution stones.
Or they could make a game registration system through Pokebank that will only allow you to buy the DLC to allow the content for one game if you already own it. So, for example, you could only buy the DLC to use ORAS content in XY if you also buy ORAS and also a Pokemon bank subscription. That would be the absolute best thing they could do since it would be like selling people the same game twice! It would also make it easier for them when they transition to Generation 7 since they could do the same thing and allow Gen 7 Pokemon in Gen 6.
@SanderEvers March 2016. Sun and Moon have been announced. Still no word on Z.
If they actually make a Pokémon Z version,they should have brand new Mega Evolutions.
