There are some prominent franchises that have so far eluded the Switch, and one that will finally break that streak is Tomb Raider. Well, technically, though the games in question were actually spin-offs that didn't bear the IP's name in the main title. Oh well.
In a big ol' press release outlining celebratory events and goodies for Tomb Raider's 25th Anniversary, Square Enix has confirmed that Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris will head to Switch in 2022.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris are arcade-inspired action-adventure games that combine the hallmarks of Tomb Raider, including exploration and discovery, platforming, and puzzle solving, with co-operative multiplayer, character progression and fun fast-paced combat.
They were originally released way back in 2010 and 2014, developed by Crystal Dynamics which would further establish its credentials with the impressive reboot of the main 3D series and most recently Marvel's Avengers. Doing the bulk of the work on the Switch ports is Feral Interactive, which did an excellent job with the system's version of Alien: Isolation.
While they may not have been at the top of many lists in terms of desired Switch ports, these games reviewed relatively well when they first released and could be a good fit for the system.
Are you interested in picking these up on Switch next year?

me: "mom, can we get Tomb Raider on Nintendo Switch?"
mom: "you already have that."
Tomb Raider on Nintendo Switch:
Nothing like too many games! Just that there is No time🥶
Has anyone played this? Another article I read says it's a multiplayer game? Is there a single player campaign?
The Last Revelations meets Captain Toad, good games but as far as the Switch can get.
there's no way the Switch could handle the current trilogy (without heavily botching the graphics)
@MarioBrickLayer single player, level based, supernatural enemies to kill, puzzles to solve, secrets to find.
I’ve played these before.
I know those are not the "big" ones, but they are pretty good and quite fun. You can play them with friends, but it allows you to play alone and its still good. Most of the games revolve around puzzle solving and team tasks.
This reminds me of us wanting Fallout on the Switch and Bethesda told us "YES! You will have Fallout on the Switch!" and they gave us Fallout Shelter!
Finally Laura gets Pixel upgrade......
Played the first, not the second and loved it .They are a good fit for the platform, will buy if they are priced right.
@Zag_Man Laura Croufts, obviously.
Well, that's neat, i suppose. would havew liked an acutal game
@Zag_Man you're right. the first is simpler and if they stick to PS3 specs, yes. but Rise (with all the Russian snow) and Shadow would be struggles.
@Zag_Man And the times people forget when games came out...lookup Laura croft - aka Tom Raider.
Meh not interested in the mobile style games oh well already have the trilogy on my PS4
Dang, I was hoping this was the classics. Oh well. Carry on.
I beat Temple of Osiris during the PS4 co-op sessions me and my friend managed at the time, so not sure if I'll go for it again. But the first game is a definite double-dip - I pulled the trigger on the Steam version once, but barely touched it partly due to the remaining hope for a Switch advent. That's yet another of such hopes rewarded at long last.
@FernandoMachado without botching the graphics or without trimming the VFX/resolution fat that often gets sold under the "graphics" label? The Outer Worlds port reportedly shaved off quite a bit, and the result is still a damn fun game that looks and plays more than adequately - not to mention allowing you more time to actually play it now.
Damn, read the title and was hoping it was Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Even though I mainly play in TV mode, I would have loved to play those two games on the go.
@Zuljaras Lol that's exactly how it feels. Maybe next year they'll treat us to a port of Lara Croft Go. /s
This is what we get? Haha!!!
This is great! Been wanting a tomb raider game for a while so I'll take this!
@Zag_Man you got persona 5 strikers 😋
It's a start though judging by Kingdom Hearts, if the survivor trilogy comes to Switch it'll be a collection of cloud versions (Shadow just like KH0.2 and KH3 wouldn't run on the Switch natively). If Square Enix decides to remaster the Core Design games or 360 trilogy, that would likely be native.
Wasn't this announced ages ago?
Played a bit of the 1st game on the 360 as I got it for free on GWG. Didn't get very far so I might give it a second look this weekend to see if its something I will enjoy.
@FernandoMachado The Switch would definitely be able to run Tomb Raider from 2013.
@SwitchVogel LOL I have to admit that I did enjoy that game on my phone though!
Nope, not me. Tomb Raider was an adventure game. It was not a game were you had to dust off 500 enemies in 30sec. I honestly would rather see a remake of the original 3 games, especially Tomb Raider 1. And not emulated like the Mario 3d crap or the super botched N64 garbage.
The most uninteresting entries in the series
I'll give it a shot. My kind of genre they are aiming for.
@FernandoMachado the first and rise were on xbox360, and maybe the shadow can get run if manage properly
@thiz Yeah these games are noted as being nothing like proper Tomb Raider games. I think I got both of these for free with Xbox Live Gold over the years.
@Gwynbleidd Honestly the first two of the new trilogy should be very viable on switch the first was already ported to the x1 chipset on the nvidia shield and the 2nd had a really good port to 360. I think the biggest problem is nixxes, the studio that crystal used to port the tomb raider games, was bought by sony.
Looks more like Diablo than Tomb Raider
I think these are a great fit for the Switch and have been hoping for them to appear on the platform. Would have been more psyched prior to putting a Deck on reserve, but still grat games for a portable platform.
Seriously? Two old mobile games is all they can do? A bit of respect for Switch owners maybe? At least they could port Tomb Raider 2013 and RotTR from Xbox 360… Switch would easily run those two.
Sleeper hits for me. If the price is right…. Perfect for switch.
Oh you dirty dogs, I just bought these on Steam! Such fun multiplayer games. Played them to death on Xbox with my kids.
Neither Tomb Raider nor Diablo fans will be happy. Good job, Square Enix. Reading the room poorly, as usual.
I'd be excited for the modern trilogy to be ported. This? nah
@FernandoMachado The Switch could handle the first two without any problems. The third it would need some downgrading, but if they can run the Witcher 3 (which is FAR more demanding) natively on Switch they can run Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
But yeah, this is the same company that is giving us cloud versions of Kingdom Hearts.
@thiz It's probably because of a certain word you used, rather than complaining about ports; which is a valid criticism in itself. I think a lot of people are tired of ports in general as well.
Should've been Tomb Raider Trilogy: it's about time.
Guardian of Light is great. Temple of Osiris is OK.
Not exactly the Tomb Raider games I was hoping would come to Switch but I have been meaning to play these games for a few years now. Guess I'll wait and play these on Switch instead of Xbox.
Physical release confirmed?
Sure let's just ignore the triple a Tomb Raider games but if it's mobile phone quality then port it to Switch. Yeap don't think I'd fall for your trickery there Square Enix.
@CharlieGirl There are already Tomb Raider games on the Switch?
Played Guardian of Light back on Xbox 360 arcade, was really fun.
@Zuljaras Oh god, don't remind me of that pain LOL.
Come to think of it, though, Fallout 2 would be PERFECT on Switch. Though, not sure the usual Nintendo audience might be ready for such a game. Hm...
I have em on Steam.
They were fun coop games. Pretty much the best that's going to get put on the Switch unless they want to dig up the old code and port the PS1 games over.
edit: why do people keep posting that these are 'mobile' games. They started on the 360 I believe not the iphone. There IS mobile tomb raider but these ain't it.
Now we just need Fallout, Madden, NHL, Call of Duty, Metal Gear Solid, and Mass Effect.
@kingbk I have given up on a Madden for the Switch. EA flat out hates Nintendo. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why they will not make a Switch version. It would sell very well on the Switch, if for no other reason we are starved for it.
Played one of these in co-op with my wife, it was great fun.
@kingbk Especially Call of Duty. Like come on Activision at least port the mobile version!
@rockodoodle It surprises the heck out of me that the NFL has not pressured them to make a game for the Switch. The NFL is all about printing money and expanding their already expansive following. Putting an NFL game on the Switch would do just that.
So excited to see these games coming to the Switch! I was hoping they would be ported when I picked up a Switch in 2017.
@FernandoMachado The 2013 game came out on PS3 and 360. Rise of the tomb Raider ran on Xbox 360.
Shadow of the tomb Raider might be a problem for Switch though
@kingbk Mass Effect won’t happen on Switch. Same with Madden. It’s EA remember?
COD can’t run on Switch because the game takes up a crap ton of space
@Specter_of-the_OLED this game released on consoles before it came to mobile. So I don’t think this is mobile quality but Xbox 360 quality
People who say this is mobile garbage. These games released on console WAY before it came to mobile
I'm glad to see this I love Guardian of Light. Its a really fun twin stick shooter
@YusseiWarrior3000 at least it isn’t a cloud version
Played both on Stadia. Paid about £5 total for them both. They're really fun.
These are actually a great fit for the Switch, especially considering the social aspect Nintendo seems to be advertising with it. Hopefully there won't be any input lag like Alien Isolation. I wonder if four people can use individual Switches in multiplayer mode. There will be multiplayer, right?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, Yes two Indie style Isometric games, I remember during Wii U, I thought a Tomb Raider is bound to come, Out of the Trilogy, the first two came to 360. And if I remember rightly the team Nixxes Software (now bought by Sony) where one of the developers of 360 version, I also understand that they where invloved in the conversion of either Dues Ex or Mass Effect 3 on WiiU along with Straight Wright. So there's no doubt the WiiU could do both the First Tomb Raider games, So Now Tomb Raider comes to Switch, and still they cant convert two games that came to the 360.
Of the two games Switch is getting, I have played both, The first is quite good if playing alone as well, the second lends it self to multiplayer more I would say... But honestly I would not pay money for them, I got both through games with Gold, and thats about what their worth. Fine for a blast , but just a run of the mill isometric puzzler with a Tomb Raider skin.
Both are 85% off on Steam right now
@anoyonmus The Switch can handle PS4/XBOX ONE games. They do need some downgrading (mostly resolution and effects) but it can be done.
Wasn't there a rumour some time ago about a high-res port of the original PS1 series (which, I know debuted on Saturn before anyone "umm actually"s me ) being re-released on modern consoles? I reckon they'd be a great fit for Switch, in all their lo-fi, low-poly glory running at 60fps
Oh heck yeah!
Hades is getting a little stale for me, but I'm not sure I'm done with that style of game.
So I think these look perfect to get into. Are they any good?
I played Temple of Osiris on the PS4. I bought it as a heavily discounted game. It's OK. Not bad, not brilliant. Actually seems a game more suited to portable play tbh, so may double dip
@sanderev shadow of the tomb Raider is too demanding even on PC. I don’t think the Switch could run it
Would've preferred the reboot trilogy of games, but better than nothing, played and enjoyed these, will likely get them again.
They're good games but yeah I'd rather see the original five games re-released in HD.
Getting these games instead of the Tomb Raider ones is like getting a girl's toy in your Happy Meal
@kingbk there was a job listing last year at this time, maybe in November or December for a programmer with Switch experience for Madden, or something. It was a story posted here. So maybe they are working on an edition for 22.
Why can't we just have the first game in the reboot trilogy? Like, seriously that all we want.
Hoping for Manic Miner next.
@anoyonmus It requires a minimum of a GTX 660 on PC. Yeah, the Switch can handle that. I also have the game on PC and my PC can easily run it.
@MarioBrickLayer yes you can play them single player as well
Hope these get a physical release. Temple of Osiris only got a PAL release on PS4 and Guardian of Light has still never been released physically as far as I know.
Would have preferred the origionals so much more. My wallet loves an easy pass.
I ain't buying any Square Enix game across all platforms (Xbox, Playstation, and PC) because of kingdom hearts.
@Floki why? It’s just one game
I was hoping for the 2013 port but this will do.
@anoyonmus Cause I don't like the decision like many people, and willing not to support Square Enix at all because of its.
The reboot trilogy will probably come to the Switch eventually but they will be cloud versions.
@Floki I see. Understandable
@MortalKombat2007 oh yeah true. Despite the fact that Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb raider both ran on XBOX 360, Square Enix is 100% gonna make these cloud versions on Switch if they decide to bring it over
@FernandoMachado If Switch can handle Dying Light and Doom Eternal then it could easily handle those much older games.
@Zuljaras Tell me about it ;-;
@MarioBrickLayer
Guardian of Light has a single-player mode that's slightly different from the coop version. I played the single-player mode only and it's excellent. I haven't played Temple of Osiris but I know that the same is true for that game: it's a slightly different game when you play the single-player mode. It got positive reviews on PS4 and XboxOne so I'll be buying this one for my Switch too.
This is great news! The Switch needed these arcadey Tomb Raider classics! I'm getting both of these on day one!
They may as well have gone all out and produced a handheld Tomb Raider collection instead, and included everything from the humble GBC to the DS.
Hey, if they’re good games, they’re good games, which makes them welcome!
Happy for those who like these iterations of the Series. But 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, both appeared appeared on Xbox 360, would have been really nice.
Sorry but this is not Tomb Raider, this is a Diablo rip off.
No thanks all the same
I don't know, I like the heavy supernatural elements with Lara. I mean if you are going to explore old ruins you might as well go supernatural than just fighting regular, greedy antagonists.
Agree this is a good fit for Switch. Disagree that other Tomb Raider content hasn't come across first.
Probably a good fit for the Switch BUT saddened that not even the Keeley Hawes trilogy (Legend/Anniversary/Underworld) has made the cut (surely could port the PS3 HD collection over?) let alone the 2013 reboot and Rise (which I would definitely double dip for).
Thought this might be Tomb Raider 2013 which is BRILLIANT and i would probably buy again on Switch.
Surprising this isn't a cloud release
Nice to see TR on the Switch, let's hope the scores are high.
@anoyonmus
I had no idea Rise of the Tomb Raider was on 360. Honestly, I think if Square-Enix puts in the effort, Rise of the Tomb Raider can run natively on the Switch but Square Enix could not even bother to port PS3 compilations on Switch which they done on other platforms.
@MortalKombat2007 well Rise of the tomb Raider is on 350. And yeah you are right
@Grumblevolcano funny thing here is that Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider both came out on Xbox 360.
But yea, knowing Square Enix, they are gonna make all the games cloud
@JustMonika Switch can handle Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider as both were on Xbox 360.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider might be a problem though
OMG!!! YES!!!!
These have been on my most requested ports since the Switch was announced!
I am freaking over the moon right now!
Now how about porting Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld to Switch? I'd take all of these over ports of the most recent reboot.
I love the recent reboot, but the earlier TR games from Crystal Dynamics are some of my absolute favorites!
@CharlieGirl These games are good in their own right, they are not tomb raider games, they are spin-offs.
These are nice co-op puzzle games.
Tbh I'd like sequels to the Lara Croft & Hitman Go games on Switch... or perhaps Final Fantasy Go?!?
.... Wun can only hope.
Doesn't make any sense...why not start with the big gun? Why not Tomb Raider (2013)? It could run it and has already been ported to Tegra and Android (Nvidia Shield) so we all know its possible...
