I'm really not a fan of what ININ and Strictly Limited have been doing with these frankly CONFUSING releases as of late. As a digital-only Switch gamer (in part because my launch Switch no longer reads game cards), charging astronomical amounts for limited editions that contain exclusive software really grinds my gears. They did it with Space Invaders (digital collection has 3 games, physical collection has 11), they're doing it with Turrican (digital collection has 4 games, physical collections have 10), and they're now locking the OG Monster World IV behind physical only? LAME.
At least Darius you can buy it all digitally, but it's gonna cost you $120... O_____o
I just wish Konami and M2 would give us a Gradius Anniversary Collection (and include the Famicom port of Gradius II and the SNES port of Gradius III).
Seems odd that Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and Spector of Torment are being counted separately here. Treasure Trove is the correct answer all the way (it has EVERYTHING!), but the main appeal was still the fact that day-one Switch owners got the new campaign months before it came to other platforms.
At the very least, Spector of Torment was the best Switch launch exclusive.
@whodatninja Sigma 2 is an interesting case. The PS3 simply didn't have enough memory to handle the (at the time) VERY impressive but technically taxing dismemberment system and sheer number of onscreen enemies, so Koei Tecmo "remixed" the game to play to the strengths of the hardware. It definitely feels gimped when compared directly to the Xbox 360 original, but it's still a good rendition (a few of the changes are for the better honestly, though I HATED the purple mist instead of blood - hoping they fix that for this version).
I hope they at least add the blood back into Sigma 2 like they did in the Vita port.
Also, while I agree with the general consensus that Black is the ultimate version of Ninja Gaiden, there is no bad version. Sigma adds some rather superfluous content and makes a few questionable changes along the way, but it is still one of the best character action games ever made. Black is available to download in a BEAUTIFUL upscaled version on Xbox One and the upcoming Series S/X for like $10, so would still recommend that to people who can go that route.
Hoping when this gets revealed, they announce that Ryu is coming to Smash AND the SNES trilogy and NES versions of Ninja Gaiden II & III are being added to Nintendo Switch Online.
WILDLY UNPOPULAR OPINION: This is the best Starfox game. Once the controls are mastered, no other game in the series matches it in moment to moment action.
Everyone complaining about this game's problems only makes me want it more. The gaming landscape has become so exceedingly sterile and routine, I'm all for anything that challenges the concept of what makes video games "good." My hats off to the developers for sticking to their guns and delivering the surreal, dadaist experience they're aiming for.
@Boo-Thang This EXACTLY. The show toes the line between being VERY clever and smart, and also VERY lowbrow and silly. I think that's why so many people have latched onto it - it satisfies people who want a little more intelligence in their comfortingly "stupid" humor. And yes, sometimes it veers too far into absurdist lowbrow territory (ie. Pickle Rick), but it's often ingenious and inventive writing shouldn't be discounted.
The toxic vocal minority of the fanbase can be complete garbage though, which I feel turns a lot of people off.
Loaded it up today, and found the resolution MUCH sharper in handheld mode than it was before. I'll probably wait for the next update before diving in any further.. but honestly, I'm just a few missions in and finding it pretty fun. This game is not nearly as bad as it's made out to be.
@retro_player_22 you seem to have combined Shinji Mikami and Hideki Kamiya into one person. Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and Viewtiful Joe are directed by Kamiya. Resident Evil 4 and The Evil Within are Mikami (though he WAS an executive producer on DMC and Viewtiful Joe, he had no role in Bayonetta)
@Onion I would argue that it's only an issue to people who are defending their decision not to buy the game. And to be fair, if it bothers you, vote with your wallet; more power to you. But having played this game and many other games of it's ilk, I can say with complete confidence that a locked 30fps does not hinder this game in the least.
For months I've been wondering why they don't give us Startropics in leiu of the 3rd Japanese exclusive game.. and I now I realize they've just been been holding off until the month with TWO Japanese exclusive games
@PhantomJedi @JackTako 8 of the included games do, in fact, support vertical mode! Centipede, Fire Truck, Maze Invaders, Millipede, Monte Carlo, Super Breakout, Super Bug, and Soccer.
@OorWullie since the game is built as a "toys to life" game, naturally all of the necessary character/vehicle data would need to be included in the base download so that the toys could work on the fly as intended. All of the "DLC" in the digital version most likely just unlocks that content for use without a figurine.
TLDR; the file size won't likely be getting much higher. Possibly a bit due to standard patches and updates, but not due to DLC.
@darthstuey a lot of indie games lately have included pre-purchase discounts. If you're definitely planning on picking one up, why not save a few bucks?
I've been pronouncing them as N-E-S and S-N-E-S my whole life and I ain't stopping now. I also refer to GameFAQS as Game-F-A-Qs. I guess I just have an aversion to pronouncing acronyms as words?
Played this game for over 30 hours and 100%'d it. No regrets. Not as good as Sonic Generations, but still easily a Top 5 3D Sonic game (i'd put it behind Adventure 2, Generations, and Colors personally).
I 100%'d this game and never experienced a single frame rate drop, sound bug, or found the load times to be much different than the Wii U version. Just lucky I guess?
One thing the new update did do though was wipe out my past daily/weekly challenge rankings -_______-
As a retro gamer, I love this kind of thing. I mocked up my own NA SNES box art using the official art too, just cause I'm THAT excited for this whole thing.
UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT: I loved Star Fox Zero, to the point where going back to the older games is now boring to me. I found the precision and skill it offered and pace of the battles immensely satisfying (though it seems I'm one of the lucky few who figured out the controls within 5 minutes)
@Yasume This game wasn't announced at all. It was outed by a Korean Ratings Board. If there's no Switch in Korea, there's zero reason for Capcom to seek a rating for a Switch version. @faint is right, this news neither confirms nor denies anything relating to a Switch version.
Wishful thinking, but hopefully we just get a Switch exclusive Mega Man Ultimate Collection (or something like that) that contains all 10 games. Wouldn't really want 7-10 without 1-6 (even though 9 is my favorite entry).
Been re-playing this on the Switch, and it's been a dream come true. And I must say, while a traditional D-Pad would have been preferred, the negativity surrounding using the Joy-Con with this game is unwarranted. Took me maybe 2 minutes to get used to using the directional buttons, and they work just fine. I could see them being less-than-ideal for something like Street Fighter II, but no issues here. (My only control gripe is the placement of the select/minus button. Makes switching from propeller dagger to phase locket a bit of a pain at the end of the Frigid Flight relic course).
I'm hoping they keep the racing in, but just have all vehicles available and selectable. As long as that's the case, I don't feel this will be a gimped version at all. Having all of your Skylanders readily available without having to swap out figurines on a portal is great.
Loving this game so far! Though I must say, it's more of a straight forward retro-styled action game with some metroidvania elements sprinkled in, than a metroidvania game like the previous installments. The end level bosses are great, but dungeons are sorely missed. All in all, not as good as Pirate's Curse, and debatably not as good as the original. I prefer it to Risky's Revenge though (which I still adore).
The way the FAQ is worded on Playtonic's website, it kinda sounds like they already have the Switch version in the pipeline, but are waiting until after the Switch presentation in January to formally reveal it. Hopefully it'll be out there with the other versions in April.
I understand the negatively surrounding the gimped online functionality, but thanks to the Super Mario Challenge (which is essentially a linear 100 stage campaign mode bursting with creativity and replayability), Super Mario Maker for 3DS is arguably the best single player 2D Mario platformer since the SNES era.
Wonderful news! Will look great next to my copy of the original Castlevania 10" LP from Mondo. I know they also announced a few months back that Simon's Quest, Dracula's Curse, and Symphony of the Night would also be getting vinyl releases at some point. I wonder if they'll go in order, or if Super Castlevania IV is next. Super stoked for Dracula's Curse myself!
Assuming the Switch launches towards the end of March, 2 million will be perfectly fine. After all, the Japanese fiscal year ends on March 31st. They can then ship more at the beginning of April.
If it launches in early March though, that could be a problem.
@Al_Godoy DKCR was previously only available for download through My Nintendo as a gold coin reward. So yes, it's been around since the end of March, but it's just hitting the eShop for purchase today.
Pretty bummed, but totally understand why he made this call. When it was first revealed that the game might not make it to Wii U, I figured I'd get the Vita port instead (which was also just cancelled). Ah well.
At least I can still play as Drifter in Runbow. That's something!
@Jeronan Thank you for this well-informed breakdown. It's not so bad here on Nintendo Life, but commenters on a slew of other sites are taking these changes far too personally and letting their privilege show way too hard.
It's listed as a demo on the NA eShop, but nowhere else. Pretty sure it's the exact same thing as in Europe, just that we know the servers will go down in September.
@Peace-Boy Yes, but this isn't a niche JRPG publisher. This is Nintendo. No other company in the industry has the reputation and public image that Nintendo has built, and frankly, any potential PR backlash from the media has the ability to do much more damage to the brand than a vocal subset of fans upset over localization changes, ESPECIALLY in this time of transition.
I literally own every game on here aside from Wii Party U and Mario Party: Island Tour.. and since those are only 15% discounts, that's not going to change. Was really hoping for another exclusive Wii and DS retail game download.
Yeah, when Yacht Club Games cancelled the Shovel Knight physical version for Xbox One, they literally said "we really gave it our best effort, but unfortunately, because of publishing policies on that platform that are totally beyond our control, we couldn’t make it happen." I'M SO CURIOUS WHAT THESE POLICIES ARE.
I adored Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. I loved the art style, I loved the gameplay, I loved the interpretations of classic literary characters, I loved the challenge.. pretty upset that there will almost certainly never be another one, especially with the cliffhanger at the end
@A01 "Star fox again, a needlessly cumbersome control setup that just as many people struggle with as those that can handle it. A game that would've been undeniably better with a standard control scheme."
Considering that I disagree with this statement and find the new control scheme VASTLY superior to the standard control scheme of old, I guess it's not "undeniable."
Both PlayStation and Microsoft have claimed that their console is "the best place to play" this generation. Nintendo's claim that "there's no play like it" perfectly captures Nintendo's spirit, especially in contrast to their competitors.
