DotEmu and Lizardcube recently lifted the lid on a HD remake of Sega and Westone's excellent Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. At the time of the reveal it was confirmed for consoles and PC, and neither publisher nor developer would commit to the title coming to a Nintendo platform.
However, according to the game's listing page on the BitSummit 2016 site, this gorgeous-looking remaster does indeed seem bound for the Wii U. The supported platforms are listed as "PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U".
The listing also confirms the involvement of series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa, who is also lending his talents to Monster Boy, an entirely separate venture which is billed as the spiritual successor to Wonder Boy.
Basically, if you're a Wonder Boy fan, then you've reason to be pretty happy right now.

I can't wait to play this game, it looks really cute but potentially challenging and engaging, not to mention the style overall. ^_^ Also, I love 2D platformers with 2d graphics.
The visuals looks fantastic I'll check this out.
Great, great news. Wii U is definitely gonna be my platform of choice then. I hope they have a constant map display on the gamepad, which is the main reason why good old U is my favorite console for Metroidvanias.
Nice, will finally have another Wii U game to play.
Nice, looks fun
That's great news. I'll probably just get it on PC, but I'll definitely go Wii U if I get any console version.
It's a 2D platformer, of course it's Wii U bound!
real shame this isn't 3ds bound
I never played any of the Wonder Boy games. Isn't this part 3...would I need to play the other ones first?
Looks very promising so far.
@lemonjellydude
See @Ichiban's response, who unarguably put it best.
This looks amazing and I can't wait.
I've not played Dragon's Trap since my old Game Gear days and that seems a long, long time ago!
Magical.
@Thumbsofsteel: Story-wise it's a direct sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Wonder Boy II) which is available on Wii U / Wii (Wii Shop Channel). You can buy the Arcade version for 900 Wii Points or the Sega Master System version for 500 Wii Points (alongside all the other Wonder Boy / Monster Land games).
However, it's not a very story-driven game. So it doesn't matter which game you play first. All you need to know about the prequel is told at the start of this game anyway.
// And yeah, I'm so getting this game. On Wii U of course. I loved the soundtrack, the dungeons, the transformations, and the openworld design with its many secrets. I'm with the other guys who have this game on the top spot of their "The Best Master System Games of All Time" list.
Probably my favourite game of all time. I'm not 100% sold on the art style but that may just be because the original's wonderful pixel art is so familiar to me. I'd like to see it on Vita/3DS.
Cool, I've played the PC-Engine version called Dragon's Curse. It wasn't a fantastic game in my opinion but I'm very much looking forward to hear the remixed soundtrack at the very least, that part of the game was gold.
Woot woot!
@GraveLordXD: There are many differences between the two versions. For more info check out this link: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/wonderboy/wonderboy2.htm
Most prominent is that the Arcade version has unlimited continues (up until the final stage) and the Master System version has an extra stage.
Also, visually the Arcade game's interface is taking a huge chunk of the left side of the game screen, while in the Master System version it's just a few lines at the top of the screen.
While the Master System version is missing a few songs, in the Wii VC version you can select between the original soundtrack and the FM Synthesizer soundtrack (just like in the Virtual Console version of Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap and a few other VC Master System games).
I got the Turbo Grafx version, Dragon's Curse, on the Wii VC and it's a great game. Just two days ago I finally beat it.
I don't think I'll be getting this one, but it looks sweet and I hope it sells well as it is an excellent game for platform/action/adventure fans.
Sweet. Considering the fact that we aren't getting Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, it's nice to know we're atleast getting this one. I'll definitely get this on the Wii U once it comes out.
Day one purchase for me if true! I wonder if the we5t one code still works...
@SKTTR Thanks!
I will buy it the same day it's released!
Happy indeed. In my opinion one of the best games for the Master System and in the Wonder Boy series.
ALRIIIGHT!
I've been psyched up for this since the teaser website went up!
This looks cute
Would love a remake of the original Wonderboy 👍
Hi
My favourite Master System game, assuming they don't screw it up i'll be picking this up day 1.
It makes me happy to see old series return.
I can't wait to be a desperado in my fight to return my good looks again!
@Gorlokk Might I ask where your avatar is from? It looks nice
@xPH03N1Xx86 It's actually not from anything, I made it myself a few years back... So uh, thank you!
