The Japanese Media Create chart results are out, and this week they have some interesting new entries that have also driving significant hardware sales.
Starting with software, Final Fantasy XV is the undisputed champion of the week, racking up 690,471 sales on PS4. Pokémon Sun and Moon are still moving along well, shifting another 223,051 units at physical retail in their third week; this takes the lifetime total past two million in the Media Create figures. Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS is another notable arrival, landing in third with 162,180 sales; intriguingly, this is a better launch that that enjoyed by the original Super Mario Maker on Wii U, which sold 138,241 units in its first week. The 3DS has a far larger userbase, of course, while the importance of portable gaming (and the value of ports like this) is arguably more significant in Japan than in the West.
Elsewhere we have All Kamen Rider: Rider Revolution in 5th place on 3DS, while Digimon Universe: Apply Monsters made a modest debut down in 11th. Results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Final Fantasy XV (Limited and Bundled Editions Included) (Square Enix, 11/29/16) – 690,471 (New)

Well Japan is the land of the handhelds (as well as the rising sun) so that make sense and quite frankly is the reason that I thought that they made the game in the first place. Gotta snag the handheld only gamers.
Ugh
The PS4 Pro ain't doing too well. I'm a bit disappointed the Japanese have bought into the lazy cash grab by Nintendo.
I have no interest with Roman number FF starting from 13. Completely disappointed. Miitopia looks much better than FF XV (Not boring, Funny and Crazy also) in my opinion. Sorry for my harsh comment.
Someone should do a chart that takes platform userbase into account... calculating the percentage of users that bought the game, and ordering the chart based on that... could be quite interesting to see how games compare like that.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE it's pointless. Sony will regret making it.
Yay! Splatoon is back on the chart! Who cares about that Mario Maker cash-grab?
PlayStation 4 - League of it own
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You know, your constant negative snipping really annoys me.
What may be a "cash grab" to you is a chance for millions of people to play a game, with updated modes and a new handheld Mario campaign, that otherwise couldn't. Also, plenty of people with the Wii U version have also bought this for the on-the-go aspect. The fact they managed to cram this into a 3DS is pretty amazing.
@alasdair91 I have the Wii u version and the 3ds version. Both great.
Don't get annoyed. It's a forum. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion
@SLIGEACH_EIRE ignore them Sligeach. Your opinion is as valid as the next internet comment. Lol
Cash grab is right for Mario maker, but who cares, more for Nintendo right?
And holy god those ps4 standard model numbers compared to the pro are brilliant. Pro is good, I have one, but I really didn't need to upgrade TBH, I'm just a sucker for new tech. It'll pick up speed next year in Japan when more games come out and take advantage of it I'd say.
Hey, look at that! XBox One finally got a game in the Top 20!
@UK-Nintendo "Greatness awaits."
Yep. We're all still waiting.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Technically, everything is a cash grab-- the bottom line is always making money.
A lot of people loved Mario Maker on the Wii U, and bringing it to the 3DS makes perfect sense (especially since when it was first initially leaked people thought it was a 3DS title).
But I'm trying to reason with a troll here. Man, I have too much free time.
@gatorboi352 Sony made PSPgo, Vita TV and a $500 24" 3D display, I don't think they have any regrets left for the Pro.
3 good things about the Pro -
1. An excuse to hawk their 4k tvs.
2. $400 price makes the $300 Slim price look good.
3. A year or 2 from now rather than drop the Slim to an unprofitable level of $199, they just cancel it, sell the Pro for $299. (Wii U Basic)
So while it won't sell well, it has it's uses. Sonys Wall of Shame is so crowded I don't feel the need to put it up there. Also did a good job of keeping get people focused on PS4 when X1S launched and Scorpio and Switch were announced. For what it cost in engineering they probably made up for in press coverage. Gotta keep relevant.
@CrazedCavalier like really. Your still waiting
Well to be fair, I imagine in Japan the "sharing" portion of the release might work a bit better since, as I understood, streetpass is much more popular there.
It is great to see WiiU minecraft still in the list.
You kind of have to pity the XBox One here, somehow selling less that a console that, as far as I know, has been discontinued.
I have it on WiiU and i'm also getting the 3ds version. Mainly for portability. Would have liked all the WiiU features but there's still a lot of content and playability in the portable version. Especially for £26.
More money for Nintendo is all I care about. I personally won't be buying the Nintendo 3DS version since I already have alot of time invested in the Wii U version, but if I had the time I would definitely be playing Final Fantasy XV. That game looks killer.
I like Japan, I should move there. They seems to have a better taste in games than the rest of the world.
To everyone here, please, don't feed the troll. It gets stronger with your sorrow.
Streetpass is probably a bigger thing in Japan than the rest of world so no surprise a game like super mario maker who embraces it would sell a fair bit better in Japan.
Again, reposting a Maker 3DS-related dual question for those who feel like giving me a helping hand.
1) Which are the editor tools unlocked in each world?
2) I'm collecting all medals. Is there a reward for that?
Nice to see Splatoon make a return to the charts as it crosses 1.5 million sales in Japan.
@UK-Nintendo But is it not grating when someone's opinion is always front and centre, always snarky, and always negative? Silgeach's presence on Nintendo Life does nothing to bring happiness to anyone's existence. Now, that's fair enough, it's not his job to make people happy, but you can see why some people will be annoyed.
You're right that everyone has their own opinion. If someone's opinion is that he's annoying, he/she should also be entitled to that opinion.
If i had the money (if I had any money), I would have snapped up Mario Maker for the 3DS immediately. It looks like an amazing game, but I wouldn't buy a Wii U for a single game.
As for negativity, unfortunately it's the easiest option for the attention starved as people will always respond. They're free to have their opinion... but you're also free to pity them.
@Billsama I swear he's on the payroll. Still, it's quite the icebreaker at dinner parties.
Super Mario Maker for 3DS is completely worth it for the Super Mario Challenge mode alone.
@WiltonRoots I would not be surprised
Hello everyone! I'm in Japan now! It's great! I'll be heading down to Nintendo HQ for the Super Mario Run Launch Party.. ( as it will be their biggest grossing game financially EVER! )
Getting sick of all these people hating on Super Mario Maker 3ds just because it does not have all the features of the WiiU version. It was never advertised as having all the features and not everyone owns a WiiU.
This isn't a cash grab as much as a way for them to reach the larger market of people who don't own a WiiU but have been wanting to play the game. Why on earth are people upset that Nintendo is getting games out to more people?
wow, not even a million for FF XV..square can't be happy with that.
@Billsama
Me too. I like Japan when talking about Games. Also, I can understand and write some Japanese letters. Benefits for me to understand some Basic Japanese on Japan Only games.
@manu0 Yeah. Square Enix probably has to sell >10 million copies to make a profit. Then they'll miss that target by a mile, realize the Final Fantasy franchise "isn't profitable anymore", and relegate the franchise to Final Fantasy: All the Bravest sequels.
@Expa0 True. Where I live it's often hard to get even one street pass hit even when I go to the most busy zones. Not that Czech is that small (well in comparison to other countries it is), it's rather the problem withthe fact that only very small percentage here plays on 3DS - and like 90% are at least decade younger people than me. So I envy Japan where 3DS popularity doesn't seem to fade...
@AlexSora89 I wish I could answer you, but I'm at world 3 in the challenge so far soI can't help but hopefully someone will answer
@cheonsacz
Don't worry about it, you tried and it's the thought that matters.
I just wish I had written down the rewards... I can tell you that you won't be able to add Yoshis to courses before you get to world 14, though. Talk about saving the best for last...
