Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is slowly but surely creeping its way slowly towards its inevitable release date, as hype and expectations continue to build by the same factor. The first entry in a new trilogy for the series looks like it'll be trying a lot of new stuff, and Shantae fans are understandably eager to see what the final product looks like. Last time we received an update on the game, it was mentioned that "top tier publishers" were in negotiations to possibly bring the game to retail.
Now, it's been revealed that the studio which will be picking up the physical publishing duties is XSEED. The announcement came recently via the company's Twitter account, where it was also revealed that the physical release will be something of a special edition. Dubbed the "Risky Beats" edition, the physical copy will also be launching with a 20 song soundtrack CD to accompany the main game. Hopefully, this will help spread awareness about the game when it launches, as well as entice those who are still on the fence.
What do you think? Will you be picking up Half-Genie Hero? What do you think of the special CD inclusion? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Oh wow so the Xbox one version will not get a physical edition then.
I hope Wayforward gives backer the physical edition because if not I will end up buying it all over again
man, that's like the oldest picture of this game you could have chosen for this article
Only physical copies for PS4, Vita, and Wii U? Since they're not making a 3DS version, I was hoping to pick up a physical copy on my XBOX One.
@wiggleronacid A similar thing happened with Shovel Knight. Not sure what is up with Microsoft's policies that are keeping these smaller budget titles from getting physical releases on the Xbone.
If someone knows please fill me in.
I hope Wayforward publishes the game itself, not XSeed. I'll be fine if XSeed exclusively handles distributing physical copies as mentioned.
When I head to Gamestop next week to pick up my copy of Guilty Gear Revelator I will preorder this and the Corpse Party game.
Yeah, when Yacht Club Games cancelled the Shovel Knight physical version for Xbox One, they literally said "we really gave it our best effort, but unfortunately, because of publishing policies on that platform that are totally beyond our control, we couldn’t make it happen." I'M SO CURIOUS WHAT THESE POLICIES ARE.
Just finished Pirates Curse and it was a lot of fun, until that final tower section, killer. As in it literally almost killed me, I could feel my heart pounding out of my chest in search of a save point it. I was glad for the nicer looking graphics, too many games going 8 bit these days. I'm about 3/4 of the way thru Guacamelee and that one has an even nicer look.
Always nice to see Wii U getting some 3rd party support. Hope Nintendo returns the favor and supports the Nindies at E3. And gives them some NX development kits.
Physical copy AND a soundtrack to go with it? Oh yeah!
Awesome. Instabuy if the game is about as good as Pirates Curse (an eight if I'm generous, but still well worth its price). Also... how about a they HD-ify Mighty Switch Force 2 and then release a MSF 3 on disc? MSF 1 HD and MSF 2 are two of the very best downloads on WiiU. Love them! Add a third and throw in a sound track, physical release, easy money! How about upresing the DSi "swap" games too?
@Smash_kirby Apparently, for the same reason why Yacht Club Games had to cancel the physical release of Shovel Knight for the Xbox One.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED It will be in a Box that includes cd case and vita game case.
This is great news. The Shantae games are absolutely brilliant and deserve to be on store shelves. I will definitely be looking forward to getting this. I really hope in the future we get more physical releases for the Shantae series. A compilation, particularly on 3DS would be especially welcome.
You've used the 1 picture where Shantae looks whiter that a ginger scottish person!
Very nice. I always love a soundtrack CD.
fantastic, keep pushing the physical.
I sent in a tip about this game getting a physical retail product. But also that if look at recently there's quite a few indie game developers producing retail copies of games. Previously, there were games like Shovel Knight and Teslagrad, but those physical games came after the digital copy.
Now there's Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, Terarria, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2, Runbow and more but I can't think of them right now. Do you think Nintendo are helping to produce these physically to try and fill their barren release gaps?
Hmmm, do I need a retail version over the download only last 2 games, decisions, decisions
Hope the Wii U retail version will come to Australia.
We only just got Risky's Revenge on a Nintendo platform here.
@Smash_kirby To be honest the XB1 and PS4 are pretty anti-physical consoles. You have to install the game to the hard drive to play it and the physical contents are mostly barebones (game disc + case, nothing else).
I know the physical version is only releasing on the current gen consoles, but is it releasing in any form on PS3?
I finished up (and loved) Pirate's Curse on 3DS not too long ago, and I don't have a Wii U, PS4, or Vita, so I don't know if I'll be able to get this.
@SushiGummy Seems like recently the NL staff have been trying to instigate flame wars by posting outdated images. Luckily, Shantae's skin color isn't as hot of a topic as possible localization.
Some one please, tell me this is coming to Europe too.
I presume this is NA only.
If this will be coming to Europa i will need to contact the nearest Gamemania to preorder my copy of the game
I'm glad I backed the Soundtrack Tier bonus.
I'm really looking forward to this. It has been a long time coming, but unlike Mighty No. 9, I've actually gotten much more excited to play this.
Why is she white in the header image, though? Didn't WayForward recolorize this image so that she had darker skin after all of the concerns about whitewashing?
Man, I want a release date already! This is one of quite a few indies that should make the Wii U's last few months quite nice for me.
Can't wait, love the series, and will be picking up retail copy for my Wii U
i still have to play Pirates Curse. But I would get this game physically
Damn, I backed it, but now I want the box too...
Wow! Good for them! Maybe I will get the physical copy just for fun. The OSTs in these games are usually pretty awesome too.
Anyone else think they should remake the GBC original?
Well I -was- looking forward to buying it digitally, day one, now this is just sweet, delicious buttercream frosting on the cake.
...seriously, who buys a cake with no icing???
Well, according to this article, Microsoft at least has a parity clause that prevents indies to release on Xbox One if it's already released on PS4. Dunno if it's this that prevents in this case, but they certainly got some sh*tty rules. Don't like Microsoft anyways, just shooters and sports. I'll stay with Nintendo & Sony.
Lol, this bleached skin version of Shantae looks like an elf.
@Ralizah http://wayforward.wikia.com/wiki/Shantae:_Half-Genie_Hero
Apparently, the lighting engine used for the trailer's gameplay was set too high, and that somehow carried over to the promotional materials. She'll still have her properly dark tan skin in the final release.
@PlywoodStick Yeah, I know. I was just wondering why they didn't use the updated version of the header image that depicts her with the proper skin tone. I haven't seen this version of the image since the initial week or two of the Kickstarter.
Why is her skin so light? This looks like a different character.
I'm still stuck on Shantae & The Pirate's Curse. How can a game so cute be so confusing?
whoa!!! has Shantae been hiding in a cave? she looks so white.
(O_O )
Kinda sucks with the Xbox One, same thing happened with Shovel Knight. Well, I can still choose between PS4 and Wii U.
@ricklongo I would have been far more impressed with a release DATE.
At long last, Shantae returns to physical retail. <3
@shinokami in most cases due to the dev team being the ones handling shipping with the backer codes separately from the publishers who handle the retail copies, backers usually end up with download only unless the option for physical was available from the get-go.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED Most likely they'll package everything in a collector's edition box. Same thing that's done with a lot of 3ds and vita games.
@Utena-mobile that's the old cover art. They didn't have the right colors available or something like that (I believe wayforward explained it atbone point) so early artwork of Shantae portrayed her with lighter skin than usual.
@VanillaLake Regular ending or true ending? I caved and looked up the tinker bat locations myself I also did the cheese strategy to get to the final boss faster. I never actually got lost, though.
@Ralizah Wayforward released the new official cover artwork, in case you didn't know yet. It looks pretty good, they went by tradition and had the artwork portray the characters with more accurate bodily proportions instead of the ones used in the in-game sprites.
@Asaki sponge cake i think uses frosting. Seriously though, i love frosting on my cake and am very finnicky with the type and quality.
@ricklongo Wayforward keeps teasing us. At least they're not full of lies and crappy unfulfilled promises like Comcept is with Mighty No. 9.
@RR529 its releasing digital for ps3. Maybe physical as well, I didn't read up I'm pretty sure you might be able to go to the Kickstarter page to pre-order a backer edition copy.
$29.99 sounds very inviting, and a soundtrack to boot? I'm pre-ordering this on pay day!
Now for the real question. Wii U or PS4?
@Asaki emm i buy cakes and buns with out icing all the time
manly because i don't like like stuff
Yes plz Wii U version.
@Natethegreat225 I got stuck at the scarecrows part, I felt like the game was going forwards and backwards and I did not have a clue of what do. I eventually reached the third island after the slime fountain quest. I think the game's objectives are not clear at all and it's a bit boring going forwards and backwards and not knowing what to do. I'm not the best player in the world but I have a lot of experience with platformers. Something's not right... :S
EDIT: Those maps...
I'm taking it that Shantae didn't sell super well on the X1 before and that Microsoft has a minimum licence when it comes to physical discs. Like maybe 10k in NA (each region has it's own contract). If you had 7k people buy the last Shantae, asking more money for this one would be a tough sell. Especially if you're trying to avoid biting the bullet and potentially eating the cost of a few thousand unsold copies.
It sounds like a question to ask XSEED.
On the game itself, this is a title I've given up waiting for.
The extended campaign, lack of communication, on and off retail debate and overall gameplay footage just drove my anticipation into the ground.
It'll probably still be a great game, but it's coming at the worst time. A year ago would have been perfect. Now it's going to be smothered. Maybe Wii U and Vita owners should be excited, but as a PS4 guy, I don't really care anymore. And the lack of coverage on PS sites tells me I'm not alone.
Not bad
To everyone here, the release date for the Physical and digital version of Shanae: Half-Genie Hero has been revealed, September 27th! https://miketendo64.com/2016/06/04/shantae-half-genie-hero-release-date-revealed/
