Nintendo has just casually announced the Super NES Classic Edition which had long been rumoured ever since the initial NES Classic Edition last year.
One thing that no-one saw coming was that Nintendo is including a (we're assuming) finished version of Star Fox 2, a cancelled Super Nintendo game that has widely been discussed by Nintendo gamers ever since the beta ROM surfaced online.
"For the first time ever, play the never-before-released Star Fox 2" reads the official Nintendo website, which is currently lacking in detail on whether the game is complete or just a version of the ROM you may have already seen.
According to the press release "players must prove their skill by completing the first level of the original Star Fox before Star Fox 2 is unlocked to play".
Star Fox 2 has been discussed by original designer Dylan Cuthbert a number of times in interviews and has had countless people create and design repro carts and boxes.
The Super NES Classic Edition will be available on 29th Sept for $79.99.
We will continue to update this article as more information becomes available.

Looking forward it! (That is, if I can even get my hands on a SNES mini :v)
This will be the complete version I presume, not the incomplete one floating right now on the internet.
I don't know if they "causally" announced the SNES Classic, but they definitely "casually" announced it.
Awesome to see this finally seeing the light of day!
Wasn't impressed by the SNES mini otherwise.
Omg... that's so bizarre! I can finally ditch the glitchy rom
I said ages ago watch them release Starfox 2 on the SNES mini, wish I put a bet on it 😹
I played a ROM of it ages ago and wasn't impressed. The original Star Fox is still the best game in the series. I'm bummed Nintendo abandoned the 3DS VC already, 'cause I'd love to be able to play it on the 3DS. Bah.
Well, this is happening.
@Freelance They can't even release Star Fox 1 on vc, let alone the 2nd... :T
YOSHI'S ISLAND!!! It's about freakin' time we got it back!!!
@Smokingspoon Why not? It seems they've already sorted out the Super FX chip issue since Super FX games are being released on this SNES Mini, so I see no reason why they can't release those games on the VC now.
Please note that the public ROM image online is NOT the complete game that as always remained locked away at Nintendo HQ in Japan! There are several versions of beta builds with different states of completion, but none of those versions is the proper final build of the game that will be bundled with the SNES mini.
Finish Corneria to unlock it? I can do that with my eyes closed!
I would rather get a physical release of a starfox collection o the switch but this is fine too. I mean it's official starfox 2.
Fingers crossed they release this on a Virtual Console, any one of them, I'll even take Wii VC if it means I don't have to get the Snes CE.
Too bad they're not releasing the satellaview bonuses for F-Zero and Zelda. This was the perfect occasion to prevent from being forever forgotten...
I wonder if they finished the rom and if so when? Like was this a pet project after Zero? Was it already done and just in the vault? So many questions.
Ah, so that explains why the box says '20+1' games rather than just 21! Seems odd you have to complete a level on Starfox 1 to unlock it though
Let me remind you all of Nintendo's official line for its 'Classics' products:
"We decided we wanted to focus on other areas. So we’re not producing any more at this point"
Just to save you from the "Why, Nintendo!??" in three months time.
The game probably didn't age well, just like the original, but for those who are a bit into video game history will absolutely love this. This has always been this diamond in the rough for Nintendo fans
It will be very interesting to see if this is the finished game we've been told about or if Nintendo have been downloading roms off the internet again!
I think the original aged well, but that's just me.
Sounds like they got the Super FX patent issues sorted out, and in the process got Dylan to release his "complete" version of SF2 finally.
Gaaaaah! This is incredible!
They should've kept it a secret
@Freelance Since the NES Mini used a custom emulator it's likely this will use that aswell. It's fair to say that they actually decided to include them from the start here and therefore made it SFX-capable from the start, whereas the ones on Wii, 3DS, and WU is only meant for normal SNES-games and would therefore require a heavy amount of additional modification for just a dozen or so games.
Wow, now this is really a big surprise!
It won't be enough to make me buy a SNES mini - although the line-up is 10x better than that of the NES mini - but it surely is intriguing.
Do a celebratory barrel roll!
@NintendoVideoGa Why must you crush my hopes and dreams?
It's not something I'd buy a SNES Classic just to play, but maybe I'd get it if it was released on Virtual Console.
@Ryu_Niiyama it sounds like they finished it at the time. I recalled reading about it, and found the articles, but the main piece was reposted on the main page after I found it so it's there if you are curious about the details.
@KirbyTheVampire Actually, I think they "correlated-ly" announced it
Huh. Wonder if this has anything to do with Nintendo's attacks on ROM distribution sites last month...
This right here justifies buying the SNES Classic. Please Nintendo, offer enough stock for EVERYONE to pre-order one. Don't break hearts again like you did with NES Classic.
I wonder if this version has many difference from the Roms. This is the final, retail version versus the partial builds out there.
Wonder where they keep the Rom? In some floppy disk in a Nintendo vault?
I'm glad it's finally finished and officially release. Hopefully it resurface on the Virtual Console someday too.
@NintendoVideoGa *2 games actually, I doubt Nintendo would have released anything other than Yoshi's Island and Star Fox back in the Wii days.
Personally I doubt it has to do with emulation, the SA-1 games would require similar amount of work, and the VC game list is like: Kirby, Kirby, and Mario RPG. Surely at least Yoshi's Island was worth the effort?
Does this open the door for Nintendo to emulate and release other Super FX chip games?!?!
Just pre-ordered mine on Games website although I think £79.99 is a little expensive as the Nes mini was only £49.99 yes you get an extra controller but the Nes Mini had 9 more games. I also hope they don't make the same stupidly short controllers again.
Is this the Star Fox 2 version that has a multiplayer mode?
Ok, Nintendo. Let's get StarFox 2 on Virtual Console for Switch. I probably won't be able to find a SNES mini (despite their promises), and plus I don't necessarily want to buy another system to play a few games anyway.
@Freelance You're welcome 😉
In before GAMEBOY ADVANCE CLASSIC EDITION feat. Mother 3 hits the shelves just in time for Christmas 2018.
(and still no Switch VC)
What's wrong with you, Nintendo? You're not supposed to make all these sensible business decisions the fans want! What ever happened to games like Amiibo Festival and Ultra Smash? #Nintendoomed
@Shiryu go on then, upload it too, blind runs are very popular.
@PAHTK Sounds like a plan!
FAE! FAAAEE!
And preorders when for US?
Star Fox 2 is definitely an extra incentive to purchase the SNES Mini.
Wow
I'm so excited for this that I went ahead and mocked up an SNES box with the new art.

Hopefully they will put this onto the virtual console after the initial run of the SNES classic
@Kayfios
It'll still be uploaded to the net, which means I'll be able to archive it.
Want Star Fox 2 but can't justify this.
// Sobs
@millarrp They'd bloody well better.
And back to the roms we go, because most people will be unable to get one.
@millarrp
Yes
Wish they would release a collectible cart of this... this is the only game I don't have already but do want from SNES Mini. Imagine it on a cart in my actual SNES.... .droool.......
Fantastic news!
Now, if only AtGames would put the original version of Shinobi III on their new (and hopefully improved) MD/Genesis Mini... https://www.unseen64.net/2008/04/14/super-shinobi-2-mdg-beta/
Now can we get a release of the completed Wii game "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Trilogy"?
