A little over a week ago we shared a video comparing Monster Hunter XX on Switch and 3DS, with the demo from the Japanese eShop allowing for a direct look. Naturally the jump in hardware was very apparent.
Now Digital Foundry has given its take on how the new version compares to the portable original - check it out below.
The consensus seems to be that the Switch version does more than the minimum to improve on the 3DS original, with improved textures and assets alongside the greatly enhanced resolution.

There's still no indication of this coming to the West unfortunately (leaving us to contemplate picking it up from the Japanese eShop), with Capcom currently putting its focus on Monster Hunter: World for PS4 and Xbox One.

Cool, is this necessary though? I mean, we've seen footage so we know it's an upgrade. Though, I do appreciate then doing the work to get the details.
@Kalmaro what is necessary?
Those muddy textures make my eyes bleed ><
Erm, 3DS vs Switch, was there really any point in this? Why don't you just compare SNES to N64 while you are at it
I'm still salty at Capcom for delaying (canceling?) it, but I would want nothing more at this moment than this being brought to the West.
This does seem less like a comparison and more like... A commercial? The Switch version clearly improves on virtually every aspect of the original 3DS graphics, I'm pretty sure that wasn't in question. The actual question is probably why more wasn't done. 4U still runs more smoothly than XX (at least in its demo form!), and considering a large amount of the game was areas and monsters dropped in from older generations of the game, there's a ton of opportunity to improve or re-imagine old stomping grounds.
Not every comparison video must be a deathmatch for dominance. They're simply comparing the two versions to list the improvements.
@Meowpheel amen.
Game looks excellent.
It's the best looking Monster Hunter game ever released on a console. Obviously, MH has a different set of standards for visual fidelity, but the truth is, MH has never looked better and I'm all in. One more week to go.
Got my Generations save converted to Japanese save and imported to the 3DS version of MHXX, so I'm ready to transfer to Switch next weekend. And now that I learned kana I can read and identify half the item names. And thanks to the save transfer system, can shoot my game over to the English patched 3DS version whenever I need to craft. Or just use Google Translate app and fully translated Kiranico database.
Shoot... let's go
@mikegamer
Those 3DS textures make my eyes bleed. On Switch, they make my eyes sing. Thank God this game is coming to Switch...
You can't seriously complain about a comparison when the game is being released on both 3DS and Switch simultaneously.
"Why not compare SNES to N64 while you are at it"
...Because there was no port of a game launched on both SNES and N64 at the same time? This is a perfectly valid comparison.
As for how it looks, I'm not a fan of Monster Hunter, so I may be biased, but I don't really dig the Switchs graphics either. It looks a lot better than the 3DS version, but you can still tell that it's just that. A 3DS port. It's like playing a N64 game on an emulator and applying HD textures.
Happy for anyone who's into MH though. If I were to get it, I'd most certainly go for the Switch version
Cappcooooom come on bring this west already
What I'd like to see is how the switch version compares to MH3U on WiiU which also was a bump on the old Wii version. But for me feels like it may have had better graphics that the new switch bump.
@JaxonH do you have a link with some info on how to do a MHgen transfer save to Japanese?
@Lord
MH3U apparently had some more realistic monster textures (took actually seeing a Rathian to recall how good it looked) but everything else just looked worse in MH3U, particularly environments and background geometry and textures. MHXX monsters still look pretty good too though.
MH3U

MHXX

@MisterMan
I'd love to. Here ya go. Read thoroughly. You don't actually need MHX to do the conversion if you follow the steps. You will need MHXX though
https://pastebin.com/zabcMhH3
@JaxonH Thanks. I'll give this a try.
@JaxonH thanks that helps alot, I put over 1000 hrs into MH3U and pine for another awesome experience.
Got myself excited yesterday when I thought MHXX might have voice chat? After the demo flagged on my parent app about two public communication.
Wow, the Switch version just looks so beautiful compared to the 3DS version. Of course the Switch version was always going to be much better, but it's still great to see the comparisons side by side.
I've said previously that if they released the 3DS and Switch versions in the West, then I'd be fine with the 3DS version and that I wouldn't buy a Switch for this. However, I'm not so sure about that any more.
If (when) it is released in the West, I'm still getting the 3DS version because 3D beats every resolution and HD textures in the world to me.
@crimsontadpoles
The visuals are definitely a big draw, but also I think just having a full, comfortable controller with 2nd analog is just as much part of the appeal. And, well, obviously the fact you can play it anywhere (and in console luxury at that). No more buying Wii U version, buying 3DS version, and using save transfers every time you leave (not complaining, it was better than nothing, but this is so much better)
@JaxonH Personally I am convinced that this game will never reach the West now. First off, if it does get localised, will it come with the 3DS version? As there is then to consider that the small base it'll have in the West, will be split between those 2.
Then, if it doesn't come with the 3DS version, the Switch version will have been adjusted (longer loading times etc) for cross-play with a game that isn't coming.
I see too many risks for Capcom to care about localising this.
@UmniKnight
Idk what they'll do. If they do localize it, they'll bring both versions to sell more copies. There's cross play between versions so the base wouldn't be split.
But honestly, I quit worrying about it and just made up my mind to overcome whatever hurdles the language barrier could bring. And I'm so glad I did. Once I realized the dialog is meaningless, and it's all the same when you're hunting, it became clear this game is very playable- the only hurdle is crafting. But there's Google Translate app with AR tech- not perfect but works well enough to get by. There's save transfers to the English patched 3DS version. There's a fully translated database on Kiranico. And half the items are in katakana, which phonetically sound out English words, and it only took a couple hrs to learn katakana.
So ya... screw it, ya know? MH is coming to Switch in a week, and it's totally playable. I hope they localize but, I'm all in come next Friday, localized or not!
@JaxonH I'll stick with waiting, or hoping the Dauntless developers come through where Capcom is being a D.
Far too much effort for my tastes to play XX when Capcom doesn't even bring it West as is. I'll probably base on whether I'll continue to play MH on MHW, when it eventually makes it's way over to PC, as I doubt they'll bother localizing any other MH if that one does well.
Seems a likely localization as most Switch games are ports and indies right now.
I still find MH3u the most visually immersive MH game so far for my liking. Especially the night time skies.
This game just doesn't look fun. Repetitive, though.
@Metal_Slugger
Have you seen the aurora borealis in MHXX yet?
It's amazing. I snapped this off a YT video so it's not perfect but...
Better over the 3DS is not saying much... Basically Looks like an old Vita game. There is a part at the start that had like 3 leaves of grass - the rest of the floor is just flat. Not worth the download. They need to make a MH for the Switch like they doing for the PS4, not this rehashing.
@gatorboi352 , I've been playing the demo and it's awesome., trust me it is far from repetitive each monster has huge differences to over come to successfully hunt and the sheer amount of crafting items , collecting , leveling up , weapon and character customization is insane. Now granted it's a title you get out of it what you put into it and Monster Hunter titles require a level of dedication to master but they also reward the players willing to put in the time in my opinion.
I would love to get that Monster Hunter Nintendo Switch edition Japan is getting .
@Agramonte, you need to download the demo and give it a go, it definitely looks way better than a ps vita game .
@JaxonH
That is nice I still like MH3u visually better ( although the armor is pretty sharp in XX I noticed).
@gatorboi352 Doesn't look fun? Maybe. You have to play it though I was exactly like you though, it looks boring and repetitive. Then I had a go on my first Monster Hunter game, Frontier and I was hooked like crazy. There is a reason why it is repetitive; to get good gear in order to fight stronger monsters. In fact, there's more to it. Since then, I am a MH fan which is why this game has sold millions and I just don't know how many sequels have Capcom made in the series. Try Google, "Monster Hunter games" then you'll know how many sequels so far!
The girl look boring and repetitive?
Not until you get along with her XD
I'd certainly hope not, the 3ds is an abysmal peice of hardware comparable to the ps1 and n64 The Switch is almost as powerful as the xbox one. Thats like skipping 2 generations.
@Bunkerneath I can see a point to this. It's an interesting look at how far handheld gaming has come in these last few years and what an enormous step forward this signifies.
@Agramonte
I watched a video of it and yes it looks like a old vita game, many rough edges. Tbh though many Japanese games ain't big on graphics but certainly up there with gameplay, vita has many Japanese games of late that look better than this. I would like to see a MH game on switch built from the ground up, not a rehash like this, this looks like something the dog pucked up compared to MH world, that's where it's at on true home consoles
Let's hope they localize this. Too many years from my japan classes
I can't believe what I have read on here. One person says MH looks like a Vita game and even says Vita has games that looks better then this. Lol
I own a Vita so you better start listing the games.
Someone else said the 3DS is comparable to psone and N64. Lol
You need your eyes testing. Name me one single game on either console that looks comparable to 3DS graphics
Also if anyone thinks the Wii U version looks better I really do think you need to go back and play that game.
The switch version is easily superior visually
@kobashi100
Take a look at a video of it, then tell me the switch can't do better, or can't it, Ys Vlll on vita looks just as good, killzone looks even better, so does AC liberation, visually Wipeout, VIRTUA tennis and need for Speed looks better. I like MH but a original one on switch would look much better than this, if this is the best switch can do then all games will look last gen, but I know it can.
@kobashi100
I know. People just get their rocks off trying to belittle this game. That's all some people do on the Internet anymore. Not a word spoken for 10 years when MH games were releasing on sub-HD systems without a second analog... But the minute we get a nice, crisp, high definition entry playable on the TV and on the go, with a complete button set... oh now all of a sudden it "looks horrible"... please.
Are you importing? Swing by the MHXX forum if so
@EternalDragonX
Not disagreeing with you , just simply asking is the switch really almost as powerful as the Xbox one? Wondering what our first glimpse of the switchs power will be.. possibly NBA 2k18?
@EDF Sure, the Switch can do better, but for what it is it's still really impressive and easily bests anything seen on the Vita. The Vita would not be able to run this game at this level.
I'd compare it to Dragon Quest Heroes. Compare the Vita and Switch versions and tell me honestly which one comes out on top.
@EDF it's a port of a 3DS game. Capcom have a done a great job with it. Seriously yes we would like a new MH built ground up but this is still a good effort.
Also Ys Vlll on Vita does not visually look better then this.
@Mgene15 @EternalDragonX What... . The 3DS is comparable to the Gamecube and has the edge on the PS2 (the reason why PS2 ports generally don't run as smoothly is due to hardware architecture differences letting PS2 games brute force a lot of stuff).
Also, the Switch is about half as powerful as the Xbox One, or thrice as powerful as the Wii U.
@kobashi100
Never said ysvlll looks better but looks just as good, a newer machine doesn't always mean a better visual game, like you said it's a 3Ds port but should be a great game all the same
@NicolausCamp
Easily bests anything on vita, lol mate, uncharted and killzone wipe the floor with this, this game is pretty bland when in the open world but very impressive when inside buildings, I will check comparison vids on dragon quest but I would have thought switch version will be better after all its a 5 year old machine. Edit gameplay exactly same but shadows and textures stand out plus the vibrant colours, I also did a switch &ps4 comparison, ps4 was a massive winner by a country mile, just like switch version over vita, though they certainly ain't the best graphics on vita by a long shot, it's like they did a straight 3ds port with no upgrade
@Meowpheel To what end if not to determine which is the better version?
@EDF I ended up downloading it,... Not impressive at all. On handheld is passable - on a 42 inch screen it is laughable as a home console game in 2017. Yep agree - Have you seen the new MH world trailer for the PS4? That is what the Switch deserves, something made from the ground up at the limit of what the Switch can do. Not some rehashed old DS game
@NicolausCamp The vita is 8 year old hardware... The switch beating the Vita should be a given. This has nothing to do with hardware - this is just a continuation of a string of rehashed lazy games dumped on the Switch by 3rd party. Top it off they will probably try and charge $59 dollars for it.
@Agramonte I guess I just see something you don't. To me the texture work, 1080p resolution bump and added effects really contribute to make MHXX quite an impressive game. I'd never consider this to be a "lazy port". Could have been better, sure, but it's evident that quite a bit of work was put into this.
@amyr0se I would hardly call 5 months later "simultaneous", as the 3DS version came out March 18th and the Switch version is coming August 25th...
@Agramonte boo hoo. Get the violins out. The switch deserves MH world blah blah blah..
Good grief.. lots of us think MHXX was great on 3DS and would love a to play it on switch. Lots of MH fans who actually play the series feel the same way.
Oh and MH was on 3DS, not DS.
@NicolausCamp it's very impressive port from capcom. Some people seem to be salty that the switch is not a PS4 beating home console. Would have thought they would have gotten over it by now.
Big MH fan. But not importing this time i had tried before jap 3ds for mh4 & mh4u. Its a pain even with no real story, taking pics and translating, refering to translation website.. capcom will not get one cent of my money till they localise.
@Joelols
This time is different though.
This time Google Translate phone App has Augmented Reality real time translations. And 2 second scan translations. We also have an English translated version of MHXX on 3DS, and Capcom has allowed save transfers between those two versions... So you can play a hundred hrs, then when it's time to craft, just shoot that save right on over to 3DS where it's in English, make your armor and resume playing on Switch. The team who translated the game, all their translations have been integrated into Kiranico database. It's amazing.
And I actually learned Katakana in a few hrs, and can already read half the item names in game since so many of them are English words written in kana.
Well, if you change your mind, I'll be in the forum hunting with whoever else is importing
@JaxonH tho tempting I am still hoping for a localise version or if capcom do decide to do a dedicated follow up (not mh world) on the switch given its success in japan. I will probably get mh world on ps4 but it doesnt feel like a true mh game.
@JaxonH "We also have an English translated version of MHXX on 3DS". We do? I know XX is just an expanded version of Generations, but it's not really the same thing, and the Japanese 3DS games don't have English text to my knowledge.
@NicolausCamp
There's a fan translation that takes care of everything but dialog.
People ask why this happened, and yet they forget Kingdom hearts 3D had the same treatment in the 3DS Vs PS4 version.
And it happened because its what these people do, they show the quality of multiple versions of games side by side to see how they stack up. It is never needed ever, it's just what they do.
@JaxonH I'm impressed with your dedication! I didn't know the save transfer of Gen to XX was possible. It sounds awfully convoluted though, requiring homebrew hacks.
It's amazing to me that there are fans so dedicated to MH that they've essentially stepped in and created a makeshift localization of this game while Capcom remains silent.
Personally I will wait and see. I don't like the idea of paying for XX if Capcom can't even be bothered to localize it, and I don't use homebrews and have no intention of starting over without my Gen save transferred, not to mention using language patches or translators. For me it's all way too much hassle.
Anyway, enjoy MH on Switch!
Just needs an English translation buff. Because what's a Monster Hunter XX thread with out me whining about it.
@NicolausCamp and you know that is fine. Look if Capcom decideds to bring this to the states With MH World (day 1 buy for me) and they both become a hit that is great for all of us.
@icerzerocool I've played the one on Wii U, MH3U was it? Just not my cup o' tea.
It's quite interesting. Instead of going for a rich graphical upgrade, instead, they went for the sharpest, cleanest image they could.
Although personally I would much rather have 60fps.
@RootsGenoa HELL YEAH MAN!
@Mgene15 yeah the xbox is like 1.34 teraflops and the switch is like just over 1. As far as I know nba 2k is identical but the fps is locked 30 on switch
@CrazedCavalier lol...no you never I'm assuming you are too young and never owned a gamecube of ps2. The 3ds is between the n64 and ps2
