Re: Talking Point: If Nintendo Switch Online Adds Game Boy, Why Not Throw In GBA, Too?

I think there's an argument to be made that having older Metroids available might harm Dread. There's no denying the hype right now, and I'm short that's gonna push many first-timers to try Dread. Unless you provide them with a cheaper way to try the precursors - if a prospective new customer tries out the older titles to get a taste and doesn't like it, then they aren't gonna shell out for Dread, and Nintendo loses money. That, or people get their Metroid fix beforehand and dont buy Dread, at least not immediately.

On the other hand, Super is available, so I'm not sure if that makes this whole point obsolete

Re: Random: Take A Look At The 'Ultimate Solar Powered Game Boy Pocket'

This made me think about solar panels on the Switch. OK, I'm no engineer, but:

According to Source 1, the Switch has a power consumption of 16W discharged with Joy-Cons. This Quora post (source 2) says calculator solar panels provide a power of 1300W/m2 in sunlight. Let's go with half of that to account for decent light, but not direct sunlight, so 650W/m2. On the top of the Switch, from my measurements, there's a 0.7cmx3cm rectangle between the volume and the air out bit (this seemed like the most natural place for a solar panel, seeing as the top of the console is most likely to get the light). That's an area of 0.7x3x10^-4=2.1x10^-4 m^2. That area gives a power output of 2.1x10^-4 x 650 =0.1365W. Making the Switch consume a relative power of 15.9W. Which is basically the same as before.

Suppose we wanted to improve the Switch to effectively use half its current power; we'd need these solar panels to give a power of 8W. Then the area we need is 8W/650W m^-2 = 0.012m^2=123cm^2. The Switch screen has an area of 7.8x13.6=106cm^2. So you'd need more than the area of the Switch screen of solar panels in order to extend the Switch's battery by 50%. So yeah, at that point, I guess there's no reason to include solar on the Switch.

Re: Soapbox: A Strange Desire For Switch Sports And A Return To Wii's Wuhu Island

I was talking to a non-Nintendo-worshipping friend the other day (I was shocked they existed too!) who was saying the Switch was missing out by not selling itself as a family device like the Wii was. Not only would this return to Wuhu be great for us with lewd diary entries about Miyamoto, but it would also help the Switch recapture the audience largely ignored by Sony and Microsoft, and who was tantalizingly teased with ac:nh and clubhouse

I think its really cool seeing how much people are praising Xbox Series here. I was looking at getting one of the new ones, you know, to get games that can actually run, but I feel like I just can't do it if none of the games on there use gyro, especially shooters. I've grown so used to it now, that I tried the Switch Bioshock ports, but I couldn't finish due to how horrible shooting with an analogue stick felt. I know Sony have gyro, but if no devs are actually using it then what's the point!

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Delivered An Excellent E3 Direct For Fans Old And New

I think people sometimes need to consider the general reception of a game separately from their own opinions. I'm not a fan of RPGs, but it just because I couldn't care for Mother 3, SMT V, a new gen of Pokemon and other notable games doesn't mean that such a (hypothetical) direct wouldn't be monumental. Metroid Dread is bloody monumental, Monkey Ball seems excellent, I think we can vote this as excellent for a general fan.

Re: Metroid Prime 4 Was First Announced Four Years Ago Today

Or even a subtitle. How about Metroid Prime 4: Repentance? Samus leaves a Federation ship unprotected because she finds out about secret Metroid research, so she leaves, and then Space Pirates attack it. She ignores their distress call, sees the research base crash down to the planet, so she has the battle to get back the research, all the while grappling with her guilt. We have the emotional development of Other M into making her human alongside her carrying on with the bad-ass attitude and pirate slaying everyone knows her from, without too much "oh pity me Adam" everyone hates. Hire me, Retro!!!!
