Originally scheduled for release back in the the spring, today's Nintendo Indie World Showcase announced that Axiom Verge 2 will be shadow-dropping on Switch eShop today. Surprise!
Yes, Thomas Happ's sequel to one of the premier indie Metroidvanias of the last decade is available today on Switch eShop for $19.99 / €17.99, with a 10% discount for the first week.
Eagle-eyed readers might have guessed its imminent arrival due to update data for the game showing up on Nintendo's servers in the last week of May, but it's great to see the delayed game game finally launch. The original Axiom Verge is one of the gems on Switch eShop — a game we called "modern classic" when we awarded it an outstanding rating back in 2017.
But does the sequel live up to its predecessor, you ask? Ah, you'll have to read our AX2 review for the answer to that question! (Spoilers: it’s good).

I'm gonna dive straight in, Thomas Happ deserves the support.
My money is ready
TAKE MY MONEY!!!
The news of the day! Yay! I was really looking forward to this game. Will get it as soon as it drops in the eshop.
I… You… What… This game is out today?!
I'd have thought this game would've had a bigger section in the direct, rather than "PLOP it's out now." But idk
Gonna buy it once I leave work later today. Will probably double dip if a physical version is also in the planning soon.
Sweet. One day I'll get around to playing my physical copy of the first game I've had since forever ago. This release probably bumps it up the queue in my backlog a little bit.
Today just became a really good day!
The big shadow-drop I expected today; hope it turned out well!
I haven't played the first one but I do like the art and I'm a sucker for nice art.
The first one i struggled to get into.....will redownload and try again before getting 2
@BenAV
I'm in the exact same boat - I feel guilty every time I look at my Switch shelf and see Axiom Verge sitting there, waiting to finally be played. This sequel news today will be more motivation!
This was the best news I was realistically expecting to come from this presentation. I'm not disappointed!
Whoa, count me in! I loved the first one.
I was hoping for a release date to light a little fire under my ass to start playing the first one again. Instead I was just thrown straight in the middle of a forest fire.
Heck yes. Hopefully this one feels just as perfectly fresh and familiar as the first one did.
@Teksetter @BenAV Almost the same. Played the original for about an hour as soon as I got it and then got distracted. Here we are years later still distracted. Maybe by the time I finish the first the physical of the sequel will be out.
Is this one getting a physical release? I consider it weird that I’ll have part 1 on a cart and it’s sequel as a download.
Yeeeee boi!!!! Happy
@Enigk
@BenAV
Yes, backlog anxiety is real ☹️
I hope you’re right and the physical version of Axiom 2 will be far enough out for us to catch up.
Good games just come way too fast and frequently for me. I swear there are at least 3 games a month I would buy and play given enough time and rupees.
Yay!! Downloaded.
