There are some games that are just weirdly natural fits for the Nintendo Switch, and Slime Rancher has always been one of them. Except, until today, it wasn't even on there! Crazy. Luckily, developers Monomi Park have finally righted this wrong with the launch of Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition on Switch.
And no, we didn't misspell "portable" — plorts are the game's currency, which is just a cute word for "slime poop". As a slime rancher, your job is to round up the slimes of the wild in order to sell their adorable dung on the stock market, making enough money to eventually expand your farm, find new slimes, and paint your house nice colours.
Earlier this year, Monomi Park announced that the Slime Rancher sequel would be an Xbox Game Pass launch title, and an exclusive to Microsoft's various consoles.
But at least we can play the original until then. Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition is out now on the Nintendo Switch eShop!

I was confused about the "Plortable" tag - is it the same as the version on other platforms? Cos if so, I'll definitely pick this up. I played it for a bit for free on Epic store a while back, and it's something i really wanna revisit
Is this the same version as other platforms. Or is it way different
@stinky_t @blindsquarel Yep, same game-all DLC is included too
Yes! Been asking for this for years!
@tee-cup that's brilliant, cheers
@tee-cup I might need to pull the trigger then.
I was worried about the "Portable Edition" subtitle as well. Makes it sound like it's a new, smaller version of the game. Like a "Pocket edition".
I guess they just couldn't say no to a good pun...
For a guy that really likes to shooty shooty kill stuff, I've actually really enjoyed Slime Rancher. I'd definitely pick this up on Switch.
Played this for about an hour recently - Gamepass on PC - and while it looked nice and I had been looking forward to it there really didn't seem to be much game there. Seemed a little too much like a free quick play mobile game and not what I was hoping it was, something more similar to Elebits. Sad Wii never got an Elebits sequel but Boom Blox got a sequel.
I imagine Fangamer will throw down one mean collector's edition for the physical release of this one.
Its a fantastic game but I would tread carefully with the Switch version.
Ive played both the PC and PS4 version.
The PS4 version suffered from an ever increasing load time (played after the first expansion....not the recent one)
It starts off initially fast but then ended up going upward of 2-3 mins.
It it rectifiable though by keeping the world reletively clean (not just leaving stuff everywhere......the floating ball decorations cause the most load issues)
Basically the more the world is populated by stuff the longer the loading time.
I dont know if this was ever patched out of the PS4 version and whether the smaller RAM avaliable to the switch is going to amplify this issue.
Fantastic game though.
I’ve never been a first/third person shooter kind of a video game player but I appreciate the indie companies listening to their audience and bringing this gem to the Switch. score another one for the “plortable” gamers!!
@idork99 not really a shooter… you vaccum up slimes and raise them on a farm
"But at least we can play the original until then."
You can play after then, too.
As others have said, this game is very fun.
@tee-cup
Alright this might be a pickup then
No Physical cart?
Does anyone know if this has gyro aiming? That's just so much for this old PC dog.
Really REALLY tempting. Wonders about the frame rate though. Played it on PC and PS4 Pro and even those get minor frame rate drops.
@Williamfuchs420 got it! too bad it doesn’t have a demo as I’d love to try it out. or perhaps when there is a sale I’ll purchase then. (Switch gaming = huge backlog of unplayed games 🤦♂️)
@angrymice I had a quick Google and I can't tell. I really hope there is gyro though.
@idork99 feel the backlog pain… its a fun game played it on the ps4 for awhile think itll be better on a portable why i grabbed it
I just watched a guy playing it live on YouTube.. the frame rate seemed perfect.. couple of bugs he showed us but overall he seemed very overjoyed.. he also answered my question about a 31 year old man playing it.. needless to say, I bought it after talking to the YouTube dude.. will be trying it out after my Isaac run
Will there be a physical version of this game ?
I wanted to play it on Switch since 2019, great to know I can now 😅
I've been patiently waiting for this one and Tetris Effect so this is good news indeed.
Game is awesome, but I gave up on it. Performance gets worse and worse on Ps4 Pro once you find and keep more elaborate forms of slimes (like ones that explode). Exploring was painful cause some parts of the world seem to run at around 15fps.
Unless they have done a massive rewrite I highly doubt the Switch version will be very enjoyable from a performance point of view. Even the XBox One X has performance issues. I would wait for extensive reviews.
