Yesterday's Nintendo Direct gave us the penultimate piece of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate puzzle, confirming Tekken's Kazuya as the last-but-one fighter headed to the game. That leaves just one spot remaining, and there are plenty of fan-favourite rumours for a variety of characters still doing the rounds.
One of the most popular potential picks, and one that has been talked about for months and months now, is Halo's Master Chief. Things arguably started back in 2019 when the official Halo Twitter account expressed a desire to see the character in the game, and with Nintendo and Microsoft's relationship blooming in the years since – and not to mention a peculiar number of Switch consoles appearing in the background of Xbox presentations – it's easy to see why fans would be putting two and two together.
It's not just fans that want to see it happen, though. Brian Jarrard, community director at Halo developer 343, took to social media yesterday to say how "amazing" it would be to see Master Chief appear in Smash. It didn't happen yesterday, of course, but who is going to take up that last remaining spot?
We know that all DLC fighters have already been selected behind the scenes so no amount of "momentum" will sway the Nintendo gods, but the Halo team sure sounds like it wants Master Chief in the game – even if they're just as clueless as we are on whether or not he's actually being lined up.
We're sure we've asked this before, but would you like to see Master Chief in Smash? Who would your dream final character be? Tell us below.

It won't happen, because that would be a choice that actually makes sense to have in Smash. At this point, that would be giving Nintendo way too much credit. I'm 100% sure that their last character is going to be 1st party.
Honestly I'd like this to go along with a 'Halo x Metroid' game announcement. Now that would be wild.
I’d just like to see some visually unique characters added. Kazuya looks like Ryu or Ken or Terry… the FE characters all look the same… I know they play differently but show someone a silhouette of those characters and they won’t be able to spot much of a difference.
Give us someone unique for the last fighter!
Chibi Robo will be 6th character. That is my prediction.
I mean, it is not a serious guess, but you never know.
I can't see Master Chief getting in unless Nintendo force Sakurai into doing a third pass. I kind of hope they don't; not because I wouldn't want it, but because I think the Dev team could do with a break.
It would be even more amazing to actually have Halo on switch.
Master chef sucks, I want to see Kazunori Yamauchi in smash, all his attacks will be him chain smoking. It would be ***** wicked.
Give us Masterchief collection on Switch then!
There is probably another Fighters Pass coming, and it's not unlikely then.
@UndoControl I agree. Would be better than all the mumbo jumbo characters they added.
Even Smash Bros Director said they added too many of them.
Xbox doesn't sell in Japan. They won't put in a character that Japanese players don't care about.
Wait and see it in the september direct.
Honestly i set my bar fairly low but I still got disappointed when I saw they ported in yet another character from another fighting game series... like where is the originality in that? I want more innovation, more outside the box fighters like how they did with Joker and Hero, and Steve! A character that has never been in a fighting game yet has a long long video game history representation. Maybe a character from Puyo Puyo like Arle Nadja who has been around since 1990 during her J-RPG dungeon crawling games back before Puyo Puyo puzzle games even existed. Or Master Chief who's Halo games have revolutionized FPS battle royale since original Xbox which goes way back. Or add another retro NES character like Balloon Fighter with some cool made up moves like tossing flippers as a special (that used to be an item in Melee) or a surprise Goomba DLC like they did with Piranha Plant.
Porting a character who is already a fighter from a different fighting game franchise (and I say "porting" because that is literally what it is) since the character is already designed and developed to be a fighter they don't have to spend to much time and effort making up its movesets since they too are being ported over instead of being created. I think it feels lazy... but this is just my opinion, regardless of how i feel about it the character does technically qualify as a video game history representative, but it feels like a cheap shot... it does not feel innovative, it does not feel fresh or new at all...
He is an iconic character that's been in multiple games, so I wouldn't mind him being added to Smash. He's not one I'm personally hoping for though.
I'm gonna be really disappointed if the final DLC fighter isn't Crash Bandicoot. The game needs more wacky characters in my opinion,we're getting mainly semi-realistic human DLC characters.Only non-humans were Banjo and Pirana Plant.
My wishes for the last two slots were Crash Bandicoot and Master Chief, given Sora is a no-go. I'm okay with Kazuya as it's not a Byleth/Pyra situation, so any of the three guesses will make me a happy boi.
I think this confirms Master Chief is not the last character. They wouldn't be saying this if he was.
I'm still holding out hope for Ryu Hayabusa.
I think the final character will be Crash. Nintendo is likely saving the final character announcement for the next Direct likely in early September which lines up with the 25th anniversary (crazy to think the early 2022 Direct will be the first Direct in 4.5 years without any Smash).
Unless I'm mistaken, Sakurai has previously stated that only characters that have appeared in games published on a Nintendo console can be included in Smash. No Halo on Switch = no Master Chief in Smash.
I think the pattern with Slayer, Crash, & Master Chief is that there’s momentum for them; developers say ‘we would be honored/like this to happen’, and NOTHING HAPPENS. I’ll wait until the next game (if there is one) before hyping them up again.
I hated that smash reveal more than byleth, just sayin’. I was so disappointed. Where’s master kohga?!
Scorpion would be a better fit than MC and I don't think that'll happen either without making their attacks cartoonish which they aren't normally. Fortnite-man, Crash/ Spyro or a Nintendo legacy character are probably the most likely at this point. Also Halo DS doesn't count as a game so don't think that'll work either.
Whenever we get to the next generation of smash I would like to see more new content/modes over characters. The character announcements are getting stale to me and only add a superficial new coat of paint.
Also since fire emblem and Pokemon are so beloved maybe Nintendo should turn smash bros into franchise specific games. For instance, Smash: Pokemon Edition or Smash: Fire Emblem Edition.
@AvianBlue Be careful what you wish for, it may came true. It already kinda came true with Kirby Fighters. I learn this the hard way when I ask for a Fire Emblem Musou game and we finally got Fire Emblem Warriors which is still a fantastic game but Nintendo didn't do much with it afterwards.
Also Pokemon already had Pokken Tournament also made by Namco so we really don't need more of that. A Fire Emblem fighting game in the style of Soul Calibur or Samurai Shodown would be nice though but Nintendo had to give it to either the Soul team or SNK to make that happen, I don't want them to just give it to any amateur studio.
They have already decided the fighters for this pass. Unless there is a 3rd one (and tbh, who doesn't want that) I would take that as meaning he isn't starting the fight, let alone finishing it.
Shame.
@WhiteUmbrella Those characters doesn't even had to be in the game that were on Nintendo system, they could be part of the franchise and they'll still get in as long as they remain popular more. Like Cloud Strife, though Final Fantasy VII never came to Nintendo's system before Switch, Final Fantasy is a popular series that started on Nintendo and Cloud is a popular character from that series.
Never mind that Nintendo fans don't know who he is, the important thing is Cloud is more representative of Final Fantasy than almost all the main characters in every FF game before and after FF7. Also characters could get into Smash for advertising reason like Roy, Joker, and Lucas who were mostly in the game to promote upcoming titles that may or may not even released over here.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Cloud Strife was in previous Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy games on GBA/DS/3DS. No character makes it to Smash without appearing in a separate game on a Nintendo platform. Name one character that has been added to the roster that DOESN'T appear in another title published on a Nintendo platform. I guess it's possible that Nintendo and Microsoft could ink a deal that puts a Halo game on Switch and for Master Chief to appear shortly before it's release, but without a Halo title appearing on Switch it will never happen.
I don’t really see it. Halo is literally the reason that Xbox exists. I don’t see it ending up in smash any time soon.
@WhiteUmbrella Joker obviously was not in any game for any Nintendo system. He wasn't even in Persona Q. He was in Persona 5 Scramble and Persona Q2 but those games came out after he became a DLC fighter. As for Cloud, even if he was in a Kingdom Hearts game for Nintendo once, the version they included in Smash Bros was the Final Fantasy version and he represent FFVII, not Kingdom Hearts.
Tetrimino for Smash. Please
I'd prefer Air Zonk
but seriously, Scorpion/or and Sub-Zero from MK1 or 2 or 3 with live actor would be awesome. Their finishing moves aren't that bad by today's standards (burning, or freezing and busting), so that shouldn't be an issue any more with the esrb. And that will sell some copies/dlc to people who have always wanted to see Ryu/Ken fight Sub-Zero/Scorpion
@Ghost_of_Hasashi the version of the character isn't relevant. Sakurai has stated in interviews that a condition of including third party characters is the right to use creative licence to alter them as seen fit. You really think Nintendo will include a character from a series that has never appeared on one of their systems, efectively using their game to promote an xbox only title? Keep dreaming.
Halo classic collection for switch. I am not buying if it is the new halo made by call of duty developers. i am not a fan of Spartan of duty
@Nintendo_Thumb
Although the hardcore will probably hate it this was a thing
They can have friendship fatalities and babalities.
@GrailUK "Sir, finish this fight."
;_;
Now I just want an OG Halo trilogy port to Switch...
@Ulysses Still gives me goosebumps. I cried at the end of Reach too haha. Honestly, some sort of Halo trilogy on Switch would be a monumental gaming moment. Not sure how it can work (and they censored the conversation in the court case haha) but that and Rare Replay would be mind blowing. It's much easier to think it could never happen lol.
"Halo Dev says that the massive amount of free advertising Master Chief being in Smash would generate would be amazing to see!"
Fixed!
Halo ended for me after Reach. Haven't liked any of the games since Reach. 1-3 and Reach are the only Halo games that matter to me.
I think I only am up for him because another soldier for Samus and Master Chief to play with. It would be like Mario, Sonic, and Crash. The battle of the soldiers. Not expecting a lot from the final DLC pack honestly. Talk more about why in a future article.
Folgore Killer Instinct #bringbackKI
I hope for a season three pass. Too many people still not in it. And please rerelease GameCube controllers so I can play 8 players.
If they put Master Chief in, I would hope they give him DOOM Guy/Slayer alt skin. As for who I want in the game; Sans.
Does every single character in a Smash game (aside from the 7 Koopalings because they're pretty much swaps of Bowser Jr) get an Amiibo? It would be really weird to see Master Chief get one.
Other MicroSoft-affiliated characters I want to see in Smash Bros. are B. Orchid and Joanna Dark. I know the odds of that happening are slimmer than Calista Flockhart's waistline, but as long as we're talking about longshots... Adding Perfect Dark would make more sense so she can face off with Solid Snake.
@Randomname19 Super hard agree on this (although I personally would hope for Spyro over Crash).
@Arix I would love Spyro in Smash. Not as much as Crash, but close.
@Grumblevolcano God, I hope so. Crash is my most wanted.
After that, Dante.
@Yosher yes that will be an epic crossover, if they did a Metroid X Halo X Star Fox, then that will be a must-have for many years to come.
When it comes to Smash Bros speculation, it usually is misleading when it comes to all of those rumors saying Crash, Master Cheif, and Doom guy will be in Smash Bros. But what I'm about to say will be a nightmare for several fans: These leaks about those fighters and other rumored fighters become right, but they all became mii costumes alongside Kazuya and Challenger pack 11.
@Chibi_Manny Most of the DLC characters even in the last game(s) were mostly either reskins of characters that were already in the game (Lucas from Ness, Roy from Marth/Lucina) or just humanoid in general. Cartoony characters require a ton more work which was likely why K. Rool had to wait for Smash Ultimate. As much as Arle would be a cool option, characters that would be easy to to implement by having a similar framework are the more likely candidates.
As for this final character, we might get a more original character if like last time the final character is announced in December, although this time they release in December as well, otherwise September's Direct would likely showcase another humanoid character from yet another Japanese game series.
@E_Gadds_Garage that's why I want dimentio or a bug fables rep
They can only add Master Chief if they leave out everything from Halo 4 and up, none of 343's garbage can be apart of how people remember Chief in Smash.
