Re: Video Game YouTuber Dunkey Launches His Own Indie Publishing Company

silverdamascus

When these content creators will learn that a food critic trying to become a chef almost never works?

A big reason why Doug Walker/Nostalgia Critic got so much hate in recent years is that he tried to become a filmmaker instead of just being a film critic, making his video reviews full of sketches that are worse than the movies he bashes.

Re: It Takes Two Switch Physical Version Appears To Require A Download

silverdamascus

@Miu Nope, if copyright in USA lasts 95 years, while physical copies of videogames only last 50, sharing old videogames on the internet that were never rereleased for archival purposes should be classified as fair use, sure, most people would only share and download them to get free games instead of caring for preservation, but still.

Plus, a big reason so many games never came back is licensing issues, GoldenEye took so many years to come back because it's based on a movie and rereleasing the game requires renewing the license, if you make a game based on a movie/show/comic/etc., then the license expired, 30 years later, you should still be allowed to sell that game unchanged, you just can't make another game, while copyright laws are a mess, here, there's no need to change them, videogame companies should just ask the same licensing contract Hollywood studios use.

Re: It Takes Two Switch Physical Version Appears To Require A Download

silverdamascus

@SwitchForce Like I said, while I buy a lot of games to help not only the developers, but the industry as a whole, again, this whole argument of "Don't pirate, support artists and developers" is a motte and bailey since most of the money goes to companies that can profit from the work made by people who longer work with them or even died, and many classic games are not being sold anymore, meaning that buying used copies or pirating means $0 for the developers regardless.

And this could be solved if videogame companies acted more like Hollywood when preserving their past, who constantly provide us official DVDs and Blu-Rays of their older movies and not just because they want preservation but because it's good for their pockets.

Re: It Takes Two Switch Physical Version Appears To Require A Download

silverdamascus

@SwitchForce That goes for anything including your own human body.
Physical games have a shelf life of 50 years, while copyright lasts 95 years, it means that without people illegally sharing games on the internet, many games would become lost media, while most of them are not doing this for preservation, they just want free games, it's a good side effect.

@SwitchForce These aren't disc they are Solid state memory chips. Where did you get cheap plastic at.
I wasn't talking about the Switch carts, I was talking about other consoles that still use Blu-Rays, one guy that fixes my stuff, showed me an Xbox One disc that was totally bent, and he claimed it was already like this when the box was opened the first time, and he explained how everything nowadays is made with cheap plastic not made to last.

@SwitchForce There are plenty of outfits that are doing their part to keep relics up to date and working. Your pessimistic views are really showing here.
Since everything one day stops working, it means that even if the carts survive, the console that runs them may not, while some consoles have clones, some don't, like the Nintendo 64, N64 clones are just emulator boxes, not actual reproductions of the real N64 hardware.

@SwitchForce Physical owners already plan for this why else would they be getting Physical options. If you didn't buy them when released you expect them to loose value? Values of used/old/collector's games are based on supply and demand for them. Some are less then others here.
About the space and the prices, just because what you say it's true, it doesn't mean there's no problem, videogame collecting became expensive, meaning that to play many classic games, you either pay a fortune for them, or hope for a rerelease that may never come, or you pirate them, and even the people who love physical media can't just have a bunch of arcade games at home.

@SwitchForce Clearly some delusional is going on here. DLC always require download. Switch doesn't require Online play to work. Even Digital when downloaded doesn't require Online Presence to work.
It's true that DLC by definition is something that you can only get by downloading, unless your physical media has it included, but my point stands, if stores close, if servers close, if internet goes down, you can't but the DLC or download the DLC you bought, without DLC, you won't have the complete experience despite having a physical media.

As for games requiring internet, again, I wasn't talking about just the Switch, but if the servers close, even if you downloaded the complete version of the Switch games when servers were on, what about the people who got the physical game after the servers were closed? They get a paperweight.

@SwitchForce And tell that to the Developers whom took years to create the game and get nothing in return for it. Digital is the one at disadvantage for preservation since there is no Physical medium that will store it long-term and if the Digital data is lost on the Console Switch then it's gone since that requires the original account holder to access that data and redownload.
And again, the videogame industry is terrible in preserving their past, the defense for longer and tighter copyright laws is just "Think of the artists who worked hard and won't get paid", this is a motte and bailey because not only artists are not paid properly, the money goes to companies that can profit from their work even after they died, but tighter copyright laws are screwing entertainment and creativity, and also causing lost media thanks to so many things that you can't share, but if you don't, no one will be able to get them, and maybe even all the copies will disappear.

-

My whole point is that while physical games still have a lot of advantages over digital games, they aren't this godsend that people claim it is, and when talking about preserving videogames for future generations, the only good option is piracy.

Re: It Takes Two Switch Physical Version Appears To Require A Download

silverdamascus

For the people who claim that physical media is superior, nope, it's not perfect:

  • It can be lost, broken or stolen.
  • Even if you take care of it, it does not last forever, cartridges and discs will someday stop working.
  • Recent discs are not made to last, made with cheap plastic.
  • Preserving the software means nothing without the hardware to run it, many classic consoles and computers are breaking down and can't be fixed, while modern consoles are much more fragile not all consoles can have those clones.
  • It takes space, not everyone can have shelves full of games, imagine arcades, most people can't have them at home.
  • Older games can have physical copies around, but they may cost a fortune, maybe even more than a new current gen console, in recent years, videogame collecting became a very expensive hobby.
  • And most important, in many cases nowadays, physical media is just a fancy digital purchase, you still need to make a download to play the good or complete version of the game, get DLC, play online, or just play at all, many games require internet and servers working even if you buy physical.

Neither physical or digital media are good for videogame preservation, the only option is piracy.

Re: Switch Online Versions Of Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2 Won't Support Transfers

silverdamascus

You can't enjoy 50% of the content of these games without the Transfer Pak and the Game Boy games, or maybe 90%, these games were always designed to be some sort of expansion to the Game Boy games.

The Pokémon Stadium series died after the portable games were allowed to have 3D battles, and the corpse became dust now that Nintendo is pretty much only making portables with the option of playing on the TV.

Re: Mario Kart Tour To Remove Gacha Elements Next Month

silverdamascus

Mario Kart Tour had a better system where you could see which prizes each pipe had, meaning that betting on the pipe and not receiving what you wanted, meant that next time, the chances would be higher, and if you managed to collect around 450 rubies, spending them all at once meant that your prize was guaranteed.

While this system was less abusive, it had to go away, people complained so much about horse armor back in 2006, but at least you paid for horse armor, you got horse armor, you didn't pay to spin a wheel that could give you horse armor.

Re: Mario Kart Tour To Remove Gacha Elements Next Month

silverdamascus

"Just don't spend any money" is often a bad excuse to justify these games, since the gameplay experience will be worse for everyone, even if you don't pay, players who refuse to spend money will get treated like dogs getting treats, tricked to play every day and change their daily routines, eventually some will give up and start paying.

Re: Mario Kart Tour To Remove Gacha Elements Next Month

silverdamascus

Don't get too excited, so many companies are removing Loot Boxes and similar stuff from their games because there are countries that banned them.

I am against nanny state measures, but this time this was necessary, Loot Boxes are gambling, simple as that, just because you can get a bad prize or a good prize, bigger chances for a bad prize, but there's always a prize, it doesn't mean it's not gambling, just because you can't cash in your prize for real money, it doesn't mean it's not gambling.

There are things worse than Loot Boxes that I don't want a government ban.

Re: Video: Masahiro Sakurai Talks About Frame Rates In Games

silverdamascus

"Why should I care about FPS? I don't care for graphics, I only care about gameplay."

FPS is gameplay, 30FPS instead of 60FPS means they sacrificed good gameplay to achieve better graphics, while 60 FPS makes your game look prettier, it is important on making the gameplay better, it's a win for both sides, and especially the gameplay side.

It's 2022, 60FPS on all games should be a standard, not a luxury, we need the Switch 2 / Switch Pro to finally bury 30FPS, 30FPS was a necessary sacrifice in the PS1/N64 era.

Re: Random: Sakurai Originally Wanted Kirby To Grab Enemies With His Tongue

silverdamascus

The idea of every single videogame having an Easy Mode is utopian, it doesn't work, shorter games can easily have the option for Easy or Hard, but in many games, that's not viable, there are games where just one difficulty is better, it doesn't need to be super easy or super hard, plus, the idea of giving everyone an Easy Mode for "accessibility" to help disabled people is mostly asked by people who just suck at videogames, I support ideas to help more people play videogames, like colorblind modes and adaptive controllers, but making them easier is not necessary.

This is why I totally support easy games like Kirby, even though Kirby games are very easy, it's still one of my favorite series, Kirby games don't need a Hard Mode either, beginners at videogames as a whole need to play Kirby.

Re: New Denuvo 'Switch Emulator Protection' Tech Launches, And Players Are Worried

silverdamascus

If they add online checks, requiring the game to be constantly connecting to servers, or even connected all the time to servers, it means that if the server goes down, your game goes away, even if you own a physical copy.

DRM technologies doesn't hurt pirates, it hurts paying customers, it only gives you more reason to pirate your games, buying them means you don't own them anyway.

Re: Introducing Koco, A Cute New Character Appearing In Sonic Frontiers

silverdamascus

@Dinglehopper Sorry, but you are totally wrong in that claim of "Sonic never does anything original".

Sonic does original stuff all the time, and that is the problem with the franchise.

The Sonic franchise declined because they change too much, instead of just getting what worked on previous games and improving on their strong spots, they just reinvent everything in the next game, having new gimmicks in every single game, gimmicks can be good if they are not constantly thrown away and replaced with new ones.

They can't even do corridor stages properly, and they are already trying an open world.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Smash Bros. Ultimate VS MultiVersus Comparison

silverdamascus

For the people still saying they ripped off Smash Bros., it's called a genre, you can't own a genre, it's just like all those FPS games, all of them took from Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.

Imagine if id Software patented FPS games after releasing Doom in 1993? We wouldn't have Duke Nukem 3D, GoldenEye, Half-Life, Unreal, Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Bioshock...

Imagine if Chuck Berry patented Rock and Roll? We wouldn't have Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Queen, Deep Purple...

Re: The Terastal Phenomenon Is Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Unique Mechanic

silverdamascus

It's amazing how people complain that Pokémon is all the same, it never changes, but when they do change, it's always a gimmick that not only it's convoluted and gives Game Freak a lot of extra work, but it's also a gimmick that is often not continued properly in the next games, these gimmicks keep clashing with each other.

Pokémon is becoming like Sonic, a franchise that is obsessed with gimmicks that don't last instead of just continuing and building on what worked on previous games.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Datamine Might Have Leaked Details About Future DLC Tracks

silverdamascus

@NerdyBoutKirby Mario Kart Tour is yet another game is that is competent, it's good on its own right, but then they add a coat of microtransactions and grinding that for many, ruins the game.

Also, the sad thing is that Mario Kart Tour has the best character roster in the whole series, no other Mario Kart game has characters like Pauline, Dixie Kong, Dr. Mario, King Bob-omb and Chargin' Chuck, and the characters have many cool alternate outfits that have their own character slots, however, the reason why this happened is that people are paying a lot of money for those.

Re: Random: GQ Calls Video Game Patches "Laziness", And People Are Not Impressed

silverdamascus

Having the option for patches is still better than not having the option.

Sure, thanks to patches, many games were shipped full of glitches because they can be fixed later, but don't blame developers, don't call them lazy, it's all the fault of executives, producers and publishers who want everything to go fast and don't care about releasing products that are incomplete.

However, even games that had a lot of love, still had glitches, Cuphead and its DLC had many delays, the developers refused to crunch, and while the game and DLC were great products at launch, they still had glitches that required patches, because it doesn't matter how much you test, the best person to find glitches is the final customer.

Re: 3DS And Wii U eShops Approach Endgame As Nintendo Provides Closure Date

silverdamascus

@_LutheR_ I know that people who already bought these games can still download them, but those who didn't buy the delisted games, won't be able to buy them for now on.

Many Wii U and 3DS games were never ported to other platforms, there are cases where these games got ports but the Wii U and 3DS versions are unique and people want these versions, and the only way to play these games is buying them before they are delisted or using piracy, which Nintendo despises and a bunch of Nintendo fans calls it theft, which it isn't.

Also, for how long you will be able to download them? For a while, we believed Nintendo was removing the download option on the Wii and DSi shops.

Re: Mario Strikers: Battle League Update Adds Daisy, Shy Guy, And More

silverdamascus

@Henmii Good to see that people are finally realizing this.

Physical media enthusiasts love talking about how digital purchases are not really yours, you can only own your games if you buy physical, but nowadays, physical purchases are just fancy digital purchases, you still need to make a download to play the good or complete version of a game, get DLC, play online, or just play at all, there are physical games where without internet and servers, you only have a paperweight.

Re: Mario Strikers: Battle League Update Adds Daisy, Shy Guy, And More

silverdamascus

One one hand, it's a bummer that Nintendo keeps doing this, releasing the game incomplete, missing many features and characters we want, and finishes the game later with updates.

But at least Nintendo is giving us the updates for free, and the game at launch is playable, unlike those Ubisoft and Bethesda games that are released full of glitches and early buyers are beta-testers.
