Ron Gilbert, creator of the Monkey Island franchise and co-writer of the upcoming Return to Monkey Island, has shared a fresh look at the game via a humourous video posted on Twitter.
It focuses on series' antagonist LeChuck as he delivers a verbal beating to his pirate comrades, showcasing the game's signature sense of humour while demonstrating its divisive new art style.
Suffice it to say, the new art style hasn't go down well with some "fans" of the franchise (we love it, though!), who proceeded to harrass Gilbert, forcing the creator to temporarily remove his online blog and decline from providing major updates to the game ahead of its launch later this year.
The good news, however, is Gilbert clearly hasn't completely sworn off showcasing new snippets of gameplay here and there. In a previous update, co-writer Dave Grossman provided a separate look at an in-game interaction, demonstrating how the series has matured since it's last mainline outing. Observe:
It goes without saying that we're incredibly excited to get our hands on this one!
What do you think of the new footage from Return to Monkey Island? Are you looking forward to playing it? Let us know!

Glad to hear progress on this is going well. Don't be disheartened Gilbert and Co. A long time Monkey Island fan here, I love what I see and I absolutely cannot wait to play it and get stuck in.
I've got my Grog, Voodoo Spells and Three-Headed Monkey all ready to go!
I'm not really familiar with this series, but when I look up the graphics of the previous games, I have to say, the previous games are much more visually appealing to me compared to this new one.
That doesn't mean I'm going to harass the developers. Nobody should be harassing anyone. This is such an awful thing to hear has happened.
While I don't like the art style, it's Monkey Island, I have to play it.
Plus, Monkey Island is like pizza, even when it's bad, it's good, Escape from Monkey Island is easily the worst in the series, and I still think it's a good game when judged by its own merits.
Earl Boen, the original voice of Lechuck, declined to reprise his role for this one. He's 81 years old and retired.
Sounds like Lechuck is well played by the new actor stepping into his shoes, even though the performance is quite different, the character remains.
Most anticipated game of 2022!
Blah blah blah and burping. All right this is too modern for my taste.
I watched every Monkey Island and had a great time with it. The artsyle of the new one is allright. Too dark for me and Guybrush's nose is another aspect of the game being too modern for me. Still attacking the developer is not all right.
The episode of harassment was gross. Inho I'd use this article as a last stand - in order to sweep it under the rug, move forward and not draw any more attention to the jerks.
The background was given lets move on so he can deliver a good game for everyone. My two gil on the subject.
Look behind you! A three-headed monkey!
I've been seeing a lot of people change their tune about the artwork and that's great. Of course, there are still people who don't like the style, but thankfully it hasn't gotten to the same level of hostility upon it reveal. Return to Monkey Island is a game a LOT of people are excited to play, myself included. Hopefully, art discourse won't sully the game's release.
"new snippets of gamaplay here and there"
What the hell is gamaplay?
@Jhena Guybrush's nose is too modern?
@Purgatorium
Yes. His nose feels vulgar to me.
A big part of what makes me excited for this game is the nostalgia. And part of that nostalgia is the art style. Maybe other people feel the same and so are disappointed this won't feed that aspect of their nostalgia. But whatever, it looks great to me.
@Jhena I don't think I understand what you mean... how can a nose be modern or vulgar?
@Purgatorium
Guybrush's nose can. Please just look at his nose.
@Jhena lol fair enough. It does look a bit strange.
I don't like how LeChuck sounds like he's going through puberty
People who go out of their way to harass and attack others over a video game of all things should seriously rethink their life choices. It's fair to criticise and give your opinion to improve the industry and art form, but attacking people and spewing out insults doesn't help anyone and anything, and never will.
This game is gonna look SO good in handheld mode on my OLED. Stoked for it!
@Jhena ...you do know Guybrush has had a two-tone nose long before Return, right?
@N00BiSH
Now I know, but the old nose looks odd not vulgar.
@Jhena I don't really think the new nose looks vulgar or strange at all
@N00BiSH
That is fine. We simply have a different taste in design.
Small spelling error in the title, there's only one U in humorous. (And no, it isn't an American form).
I never buy games on day 1, but this is a day 1 purchase for me.
I still remember the Penny Arcade comic from when the harassment started and Ron Gilbert vowed never to talk to the internet again.
"I didn't know that was an option!?!" says Gabe.
Unfortunately, it turns out that it's not.
The retired Earl Boen will be tremendously missed to me, but I'm very eager to finally play this thing!
Why is no one proofreading articles on this website anymore?
I really dislike the Artstyle, i love Monkey Island, but i can't oversee this Ugliness.
Will sadly just skip it.
@Jhena Gybrush nose looks kinda like something...
@Vix I personally believe they should've taken an artsyle that was more in line with the older designs and presentation.
They have been fairly consisten with it in the past but this... it is not for me...
Did I just read that Guybrush’s nose is too modern? (scrolls back up)
@khululy And that's a fair criticism and opinion. I also don't really like the art style, but I don't want to burn the developers at the stake over it. It's their choice, I don't like it, and I'd tell them that, but I don't attack or harass.
@Purgatorium a bit nose-ist if you ask me,suppose no one did. Never mind
I think this art style is not only something that could not have been done when the previous games were released, but also something that will look just as good 30 years from now as it does today and stands out. One look and I know which game it is.
I'm glad he's keep going the fact he had nasty and horrible comments is disgusting I can't wait for this to come out.
I'm super disappointed in the art style. It makes me feel like some one is really missing the point of why people love the original want a sequel. That said, dude is free to make whatever game he wants.
@flightsaber That is true but is it for good reason?
I could tell any monkey island from looking at a screen.
I personally love the art of Monkey Island 3 the most.
The art of the remake of the 2nd game was also good.
@Jhena @Purgatorium
German proverb:
„An der Nase eines Mannes erkennt man seinen Johannes“
transl.: Because of a man‘s nose you know what his ‚Johannes‘ looks like
😄
Sad to see kids today complaining about artstyle or a character's nose. You were but a twinkle in your daddy's eye when the first game was released but you have the arrogance now to complain about how Ron wants his game to look like. We don't need your "fandom". Go back to COD.
