@Stwert I’m about 30 years multi-platform myself, so I’m heading into the ancient side myself. PC handhelds are add on devices, they’re not the same thing as a console. PC gaming is almost an add on to owning one, but I know people who never game on their Windows or Mac ever. Even though their machines are fully capable.

It's all about consolidation to these PC handheld guys, which makes zero sense to me. They build setups that make desktop gaming look efficient.

Either way, I’ll enjoy playing on my Switch 2, PC, Xbox and a little bit of PlayStation, but I’m never going all in on one of those devices. I enjoy variety. If I want retro, I’ll do NSO or play games on one of those Android handhelds. These PC handhelds are nice, but wildly inefficient compared to a desktop or laptop.

Guess Nintendo Life can’t run those multiple article on PC handheld anymore… no wait, they’ll still do it when they can’t do 8K gaming with 200FPS (and whatever talking point the industry drums up). Meanwhile, Apple and Google decide to push iOS and Android gaming, but NL says it isn’t interesting 🤷

While I though $400 might a landing spot… I’m feeling $349.99 for this one. If it cost $349.99 without the OLED, then it makes sense why Nintendo didn’t price it higher than when the OLED came out. However, I’m almost certain Nintendo will drop the OLED Switch model to $299 or $249 as an entry point hybrid; or best of version of the current Switch.

Not even sure we saw the final product on the screen rendering of the Switch 2. We don't know where "Mario Kart 9" is in its development cycle, people should just calm down.

@N00BiSH the Steam Deck Verified isn't the same thing as "backwards compatibility." That verifies Valve tested the Windows game and it runs through Proton and Steam Deck with little issues (not a 100% guarantee either).

It's going to be going from PS4 to the PS5, the games will work. They might get patches, but that will be up to the developers to decide if they want it to take advantage of the hardware; or Nintendo has something baked into it already and there isn't any work required.

@HalBailman join the club on Kit and Krysta. They don't work for Nintendo anymore, but they sure do like the money that it brings them for attention. They're definitely the reason why egg prices are so high, that's all they have their faces.

Legalities. I think they’re protecting themselves when Labo doesn’t fit, possible Ring Fit Adventure won’t fit with the new Joy-cons and probably certain other types of software. Games that just required the Switch and nothing else, yeah I believe, almost, the entire library will work.

I don’t think this is a “stop gap,” I think the Switch is here for quite some time. The Switch has always been marketed as a device and never a console by Nintendo. “The Switch Family of Devices,” they’ve been planning it since the launch of the original. It seems like they might treat their new devices as phone upgrades. Of course they’ll bring new features, but I don’t think we’ll what was in the past.

@rjejr very much like an Apple ad for an overall device. I’d call it a sizzle trailer. It’s perfect the hitting everyone in your audience, especially those who don’t want to hear tech jargon.

eye roll I’m starting to wonder if Nintendo of America no longer wanted them around. For the amount of eggs that have hit their faces, it’s probably the reason they cost so much now.

@Rainz it’s one way of looking at it. Nintendo wants everyone to have a Switch unit per person.

I see it as a mobile device, like a smartphone or tablet. Nintendo is going to build the audience and get them to upgrade every 4-5 years. I think the V2 and OLED models will be discontinued in 2027 when the new Lite replaces the original one. I think they might do a Shield TV box too.

@Rainz I’m keeping my OLED model too. I’ll keep certain games on it, but I’ll be moving all my Nintendo titles and ones that’ll benefit from the power. Truthfully, I hope Nintendo has solved the multi Switch problem with this new one, then you’ll want to trade it in.

Very much like an Apple ad. This will definitely get the customers they’re targeting excited and wanting to hear more. I’m preordering it.

I’m guessing for certain Switch games that aren’t going to work might be Labo, or something built specifically toward the original one.

Cool idea. I hope they do make the eShop better with the new Switch, then roll it out to the rest of them afterwards.

@TomSupreme except the issue with the two emulators cited in the article is these games are available on hardware Nintendo is currently selling. You can’t just say you’re going to “preserve” Super Mario Odyssey a year after its release, then spread it around the Internet for free.

@Archius9 guess you’ll be disappointed…? Tropical Freeze is already on the Switch, that version will work with the new device. Whether there’ll be a new patch or DLC, that could be up for debate if Nintendo will charge for it or not.

The Switch dominates the Japanese market, so I’m not surprised about them coming in feet first. Kind of wondering about EA since they’ve been feeling the cold of not having a lot of their top SKUs on the Switch. Clearly, Microsoft doesn’t to repeat Activision’s folly of not putting on their IPs onto the Switch. 2K… well they clearly “heart” the Switch, so I suspect a lot of continued support from them.

@Roger_Brazil if they’re not on the current Switch, then Nintendo will likely do it. Third parties will likely do that kind of practice, but Nintendo found out from the Virtual Console that consumers were tired of rebuying games. If anything, it might be a free patch or DLC for existing Switch remakes and/or remasters from Nintendo’s games.

Figured it was getting costly to develop. I remember, it was either a story or video, about how every VC release Nintendo basically was allocating their own studio resources to do it. Even if it was a 3rd party release. I would still love to have an option to buy them, so I hope an evolution of series will include purchases of some kind. Or Nintendo could finally release some kind of NES, SNES and N64 pack; I’ll take a Mario All-Stars re-release or similar.

@Elitepatriot or, it could be likely, Nintendo Shield-TV comes out in a couple of years. Play all your Switch games on TV and have no handheld.

Starting to think Nintendo is going to make an announcement next week. They wanted to wait until after CES was finished, so they wouldn't be competing with the show for news coverage.

@Serpenterror Quake 3 Arena would likely be like the previous two Quake games: eShop. Possibly a Limited Run release, can't Bethesda published a 25 year old game on a cart (but I could be wrong). It would possibly be Fallout... either 3 or 4.

After seeing those preorder SKUs, I think an announcement might be coming soon from Nintendo. Possibly by next week.

Nintendo is enjoying all this free publicity and hype without having to make a single announcement.

@Dirty_Croc wow. Throwing in the "fanboy" as an insult when I haven't said anything to contrary. Nintendo deemed PC in the 1990s, they've stated it would be a drain on their resources to maintain their games on any device that are not their own. They have spoken on it already. You'll be waiting A VERY long time before you'll ever see a Nintendo game on PC natively. If they did, you'd likely have to download their installer and they'd maintain themselves. Steam, Epic and GOG would not see a Nintendo branded game on their pages.

Nintendo would go where there is the biggest user base, that's mobile phones and tablets running those operating systems. Apple's App Store is far more profitable than Steam, the same with Google Play. Nintendo has said they are not giving up on mobile, so I will have to believe if they stopped making hardware that's where their development focus will go.

Nintendo isn't going PC any time soon. The Switch 2 will sell well. Nintendo's stock has slid far worse than this drought, they have a huge surplus of cash and this isn't going to push them to PC. Nintendo would give up on their hardware first before wasting resources on PC gaming.

@rjejr it's a possibility. There have been slight rumors to a Nintendo Shield-TV device, but nothing has ever been announced. The reason I think it could be likely, Nvidia isn't updating its Shield-TV device at the moment. It would be low hanging fruit for Nintendo. Also, I believe the Apple TV has a fair amount of gaming traffic on it for a streaming box, so why not? Nvidia not updating their Shield-TV device is the only hint at the moment.

My Switch is the only gaming system that travels with me. Traveling with my Deck for an overnight was a nightmare. Haven’t tried it with my Legion Go, but I think that would be okay since Windows 11 Home can be disconnected from the Internet without issue; just comes down to the game at that point. With the Switch, I have nothing to worry about when not being connected to the Internet, so it’s a default travel item.

As for the size of the Switch 2, I don’t think that’ll be a problem for me. I see Nintendo likely updating the Lite model by 2027 or sooner, plus a Shield TV model as well.

@Dirty_Croc I think misinterpreted me. Yes, they have games on mobile, but not their traditional ones. If Nintendo exits making hardware, they will only make games for Android and iOS devices. Which means you’d likely play Zelda Breath of the Wild on a iPhone long before they’ll ever try PC again. Nintendo had licensed out their IPs and the early 1990s for PC developers, they were very disappointed at the quality and saw the hardware choices as too big of challenge for the company to undertake.

If Nintendo did release their games to PC, their quality would severely diminish and what makes them special would cease to exist. Sony’s Spider-Man game doesn’t play the same on PC as it does on a PlayStation unless you’re willing to pay for the hardware.

You seem to place a lot of stock in non-tech people to what to buy a PC at all. Android is the most popular operating system in the world, iOS is second and Windows is in a distant 3rd.

If Nintendo games wound up anywhere, they’ll go to smartphones and tablets. And you think from ebbs and flows of stocks, that their shareholders are going to push them into multi platform? It would have to be a catastrophic failure of their company to be desperate enough to put their games on PC and other consoles. As I mentioned, they’ve sold over 150 million units worldwide, about 120-130 million of those Switch units are actively playing and purchasing games. It’s their most profitable piece of hardware of all-time.

Apple is the only one who can hurt them. They know it too. Their ecosystem produces a lot of money through their services, and the iOS App Store is still printing money for the company.

@VoidofLight if Apple decides to leverage their ecosystem, they’d be the only threats to Nintendo. If the next ATV upgrade features an M series chip, that would get interesting quickly. Resume play RE4 from your iPhone, iPad, Mac AND Apple TV 4K.

No. They’re doing better than fine right now. Nintendo is never going to bring their games to PC. Your smartphone and tablet would have a better chance of seeing Zelda than any PC. Your opinion doesn’t seem to be financially punishing Nintendo.

@AG_Awesome these devices aren’t competition for the Switch. Lenovo treats their Legion Go product line the same way as every other Legion and LOQ laptop. Just another SKU. Nintendo next Switch will still sell way better than these devices.

@VoidofLight same can be said for those who game on their mobile devices and tablets. They want the simplest experience, if it means owning another device then that’s what they’ll do. These handheld PCs don’t appeal to the wider, non-technical crowd.

You can bet their government will likely label Tesla, Meta, Microsoft and Google in their categories for espionage.

@LadyCharlie depends who you ask. Maybe Zelda fans rate those games over Mario and Tetris.

Yet an iPad Pro would be cheaper, lighter and play RE4 longer. These PC manufacturers are easily proving Apple’s point why Arm and RISCV based machines are the future. Nintendo was smart to be all in on Arm.

Wonder if the announcement is Nintendo is going to finally buy the Bayonetta IP?

@Olliemar28 I think Nintendo will likely leave out the Lite and OLED for sale even after the upgraded unit arrives. Unless we get a more than one unit: Switch 2 and Lite 2

@VHSGREMLIN the current one is selling, plus they want to maximize holiday sales. Announcing a new Switch would stop consumers, especially non-tech types, from buying the current model as a present. They'd likely just give them a gift card instead or some kind of tablet.

January would be the best time to do the announcement to get the hype train rolling for a March release like the original Switch.
