@N1ntendodo yes that statue is very conveniently placed. Not sure it’s a deliberate tease, but it looks like Reggie is being careful and hiding a character from an upcoming Retro game. Unless someone recognizes that robot arm?
@Shiryu Yes this is unfortunately the case, downscaled rubbish. We need to see a racer built from the ground up for the Switch, but it doesn't look like we'll be getting that anytime soon. Which is bizarre considering the Switch sales and how well games sell on it. I'd kill for even ports of old PS3 racers. Yes 90's Arcade Racer looked great, but the rumour was it was killed by the publisher as Sega threatened legal action.
@Shiryu I've mentioned this before, but I'd like to see the Switch run Need for Speed U: Most Wanted as good as the Wii U. Because no racers we've seen so far have come close in performance. (besides RMX but that's not as graphically intense as NFSMW)
@Primarina Outrun is 33 years old, Top Gear is 27 years old. Horizon chase is a modern re-telling of an old style of racer, it's a retro racer, not an arcade racer of recent times.
Yes Grid: Autosport is the only decent looking arcade racer coming out. Besides Virtua Racing, my favorite old arcade game ever.
@Shiryu I completely agree with you. It's like we're regressing when it comes to performance in arcade racers nowadays. How the hell can a PS4 not run Dangerous Driving at 60fps? The PS3 era was the pinnacle of arcade racers, both great graphics and great performance.
@Primarina Horizon Chase is a souped up Amiga racer, not a true arcade racer. I love it but it's not a true racer.
It’s a good game, I like it. But it could be great. It reminds me more of the Motorstorm games than Rollcage, you never feel you have full control of your vehicle as you hurtle down the track. Sometimes it’s hard to see oncoming obstacles(like directional barriers) which will put you to a dead stop. When the game was released I read the developers were going to fix the twitchy controls, I wonder has this happened?
@nofriendo yep I own horizon chase turbo, great game. But it’s not really a true arcade racer, more like an updated Amiga game (Lotus comes to mind). I’m talking about a true arcade racer like Ridge Racer or Need for Speed (the good ones).
@graysoncharles yes fast racing neo is beautiful and technically great. But it’s a poor mans wipeout, i find the constant need to hit the correct colour pads on the track very annoying, it’s far from a pure racing game. It feels like a puzzle game at times.
@sword_9mm yes I agree, It’s slightly under PS3 level. I doubt it could handle a game like Split/Second (one in the finest PS3 racers). I still love the Switch as I use it 99% handheld, but I’d never have it as my only current gen console hooked up to the tv (my PS4 does that job).
I’d also love a Switch-pro and would buy it day one.
They say the Switch is more powerful than the PS3 and Wii U? But I have yet to see a racing game comparable in graphics and performance to Need for Speed MW on the Wii U (Mario Kart doesn't count). So far a lot Switch racing games have terrible graphical glitches and pop-in. It just doesn't make sense....
My favourite ever arcade game, this looks incredible. My only worry is the online play limited to you against only one other person? Or am I reading it wrong? Because I don't have any gamer friends in my city I'd be playing online only multiplayer. Bit disappointing it's not 8 or 12 players online like Mario Kart.
As many have said above, it’s slim pickings for a race fan and switch owner. I also think V-Rally 4 is under-rated, it’s an enjoyable and tough rally game. I’m keeping my fingers crossed Sonic Racing, GRID Autosport and Crash Team Racing turn out to be as good as they should be, after the disappointment of both Gear Club games. Also having the sublime Virtua Racing (my favorite arcade game) coming is an huge added bonus.
@JaxonH Yep I tried that, just didn't find it very intuitive because you're driving left to right, not into the screen. Last Trials game I played was Trials Fusion on PS4, I found the controls so sensitive it was unplayable. The Switch game is a return to form.
It was bad judgement of the developers to start the game on the worst (and foggiest) looking level. After NL life posted that scaremongering article before release it influenced a lot of readers to cancel their pre-orders. I was also put off, having loved the series on my Xbox 360, but after reading NL actual review I bought the game. Absolutely love it, so much fun, the graphics are fine and the lack of analogue triggers hasn’t affected my gameplay (I’ve got gold in all events so far).
@Fidodemo I have also purchased a set in a neat wallet (Odyssey ones), I have no space for anymore Amiibo's and I wanted all the costumes in Mario Odyssey. I have spent a fortune on Nintendo products over they years so my guilt is only small.
Nintendo needs to start releasing some remastered titles to fill their barren schedule on Switch (i.e. Metroid Trilogy, Mario Galaxy's). Pokemon and Animal Crossing aren't 100% confirmed ready for this year (I have no interest in either anyway). There's just less games being released in this hi-def era because they take years to make. So fill the gaps with easy remasters. So far all I'm looking forward to this year from Nintendo is Yoshi and Luigi's Mansion.
Just got this, reminds me more of Motorstorm artic edge on PSP & PS2. The original Rollcage games were very hard to control, I think Grip succeeds in the area. My only gripe so far is it’s sometimes hard to see incoming walls. But overall loving this game, way better than I expected.
@zztfox it’s a lovely bit of kit. One bit of advice when playing NES games; use the original aspect ratio or you’ll get horrible screen tearing (press start + right).
It’s up there with Mario Kart as the greatest racer ever, I played for hours 4 player split-screen with my mates. Such an amazing game, fantastic news! I’ll be double dipping; a Switch and PS4 version so I can play again with those same mates online after all these years (they live in foreign lands now).
NSMBU should have been released in December for people who aren’t into fighting games (SBU). I woulda loved to play that on my Christmas break with my wife.
Played this on the PS3, it has a high difficulty spike from what I remember, the cars are tricky to control compared to other semi-arcade racing games. As I love racing games it's a must buy, but I'd love to see a DIRT game on the Switch as my most played PS4 game is DIRT 4.
Main issues with the first game; long loading times and short races. Seemed you spent more time in the menus or looking at loading times then actually racing.
@Realnoize I agree on everything you said. I really don’t understand why they dropped the VC for this half-assed rubbish. Keep online payments seperate from VC, if people want to play online let them pay $15 a year, if people want to buy MARIO 64 let them pay $8 for it. They’ll keep the fans happy and actually make way more money (which they like because they are very greedy). But no, Nintendo never seem to listen to fans or have much common sense in these areas. Even if they add SNES OR N64 games to this online service it still won’t excite me as you never own the game. But just having old dated NES games available is lazy and mean, we probably all own a NES classic mini, so what’s the point?!?
