It's been a year since the Wii U hit store shelves in North America, and it's fair to say that the first twelve months of the console's life have been somewhat mixed. We've had some amazing games, like Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, and there are more delights on the way in the form of Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2 and Mario Kart 8.
However, the machine's commercial fortunes have been pretty dismal, especially when compared to the original Wii. The system has sold less than four million units worldwide in the past year — contrast that with Sony's PS4, which shifted one million consoles in 24 hours and could potentially surpass the Wii U's sales before the end of 2013.
But hardware sales figures are just one side of the coin — we're sure that just like us, many of you will feel that the Wii U has delivered on its promise and has provided you with months of top-notch entertainment. Sound off in the comments below to share your feelings on the console's first year.

Happy birthday Wii U. 2014 is going to be even more awesome MK8, Smash Bros, X and plenty more.
Lets hope the wii u can have a better second year. Its looking good right now.
Wii U had a good (enough) first year! Let's hope it picks it up in year two!
I'm happy with the console. Not happy with gaming media or gamers in general that don't recognize a quality console when they see one.
Buon compleanno WiiU!!!
(that's just "happy birthday" in my strange European mother language )
Happy Birthday! You're definitely the record holder for most played year one console for me!
What!? A year old already! It seems like just yesterday that I first plugged U in. I can still remember the first time I cradled the GamePad in my arms.
...
They grow up so fast.
Let's hope that by this time next year the Wii U will have a big reason to celebrate.
I'm disappointed with the console and find myself pleased with gamers and media members that can call bs strategy and bs support what it is when they see it.
Congrats Nintendo! Best of luck to Wii U brand. Love my console so far. Hope I'll still love it after PS4 comes out.
Same birthday as me... Aha... Good luck Wii U, you're gonna need it
(29 november in europe, still, happy birthay Wii U. Now that you are 1, get your responsabilities and get yourself some success!)
I owned the Wii U since day one so I have also owned mine for a year. I hope the Wii U has a good 2014.
Happy birthday Wii U! Regardless of the sales or any of that, I love you. To be honest, I've put more into Wii U than I have ever put into a console. I've shelled out around $1500 from this day last year when I picked up my pre-order. So many great games with so many more to come. There have certainly been ups and downs, but I've loved my Wii U through them all.
Obviously I want Wii U to soar in sales and be a huge success financially for Nintendo, but if it isn't and it finishes in 3rd this console cycle, as long as I get more wonderful games, I'll be happy enough.
its been a great 6 months of gaming on my own Wii U. My family loves it and I'm glad I decided to purchase it. Can't wait for Kart, X, & FE x SMT to come out. Games for me....games for my boys....a system I can still play when my wife steals the tv.....thank you Nintendo
Also Lego City Undercover and Wonderful 101 were pretty good.
Wii U was great when i got it for xmas last year. Then every game got delayed til fall this year, which meant from January-July, i had no reason to turn the system on other than to watch netflix. Then, finally, with Pikmin 3, games started coming. But my enchantment i had with WiiU at launch is gone now. It absolutely cannot go through another drought, even a short one, which means Ninty needs to pump out the big games fast if WiiU is to gain any traction after PS4 and XBO launches. Little 3rd party support doesnt help, with key games like Destiny, Final Fantasy XV, and Titanfall not hitting WiiU. I know stuff like DKCTF and Mario Kart are coming, but WiiU needs more than whats been announced. The problem is that its all on Ninty, and i see no way they can put out a stream of great content on WiiU consistently without having to ignore 3DS.
Man Damo, when I read your short list of 1st years games I nearly cried - Pikmin 3, yet another 2D Mario game and a 10 yr old HD remake. Pathetic. You could have at least added W101 and Lego City.
Next 12 months should rock though, SM3Dw, MK8, SSB, Bayonetta 2 (not holding my breath on X), DC and Yoshi.
Not a good first year at all. Wasted opportunity.
Still glad I got mine, but barely. I think it starts getting better now though. Premature birth but still alive and kicking.
@Ony European launch was the 30th November.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WII U!!!!! Had some awesome great fun playing Wii U games over the past year! Slightly sad that others don't seem to get it but that's their problem not mine! I can enjoy my Wii U just as much. Here's to many more years of awesomeness!
Wow it's already been a year?! Well happy birthday, Wii U. I've already had great times with U so far. Looking forward to future years of gaming fun!
On a side note, it's almost been 2 years since Skyward Sword released! O.O
Will have to hold celebration until the European release date arrives... but it's been one hell of an year!
@BossBattles I completely agree with you. My cousin said he was waiting for the Xbox one because he wanted a REAL gaming console. I wanted to strangle him.
@Jazzer94 (ha, I got it a day before <3)
@Ony Got mine on the the 29th launch night 5 mins before midnight.
Got mine a week after launch, and very happy about it.
Hopefully the Wii U is like a real child... that first year they're kind of a drain, just making noise and sitting there, totally helpless. Then when they can finally crawl, you start to see their personality flourish. Here's to a surprising 2nd year!
To be honest, if Pikmin 3 had been released on the Wii, I would be pretty much neglecting the Wii U.
I got the Wii U because of Pikmin. Not the other way around. I didn't get any Wii U games because I thought the machine itself was something special. I just wanted to play the few individual games I'm interested in.
I so love my Gamepad!!!!!!
It was born 12 months premature, but things are starting to look better.
A year already? Wow time really flies!
Happy frickin birthday, Wii U! I bought mine the day after Christmas even though it had nothing I wanted--but hey, I knew I'd buy it eventually so I figured I'd get it over with.
And man, I never thought Nintendo Land would be SO MUCH FUN. The Wii U has just so many little things to do that I'm always doing something different every day.
It has Lego City Undercover, so it's a successful year
Seriously though, it's been pretty dire... Still one year down, let's hope it turns around eh?
And by the time he's two years old, he'll be famous!

@cdude
yeah, i really hope PS4 surpasses Wii Us sales at the end of the year. Nintendo really needs this kind of flop. These 399€ still hurt me. Really, i feel cheated. This was alot of money.
Nintendo needs to change. Please, the Blue Ocean strategy doesn't work anymore. Casuals and family gaming largely jumped to Smartphones. Only (for the lack of a better term) Core Players are loyal to consoles. And they buy PS4 and Xbones. Please Nintendo, do something.
Happy birthday Wii U! I'll get you around next year.
1yr old and what a tough year its been. The year has not been kind to the WiiU and it has grown old before its years and is now ready for retirement!
Unless Nintendo can find the fountain of youth to revitalise the WiiU and give it new energy.
Well, it has been an almost good year, filled with worse press than it really deserved, but the great titles are finally starting to come. Now, hopefully the next year will be better.
@SavantSupreme
If you count Mario U and Luigi U as seperate games as well as tennis and bowling then 81 games including retail, vc and eshop only.
The turn around has begun but will definitely kick-off with Super Mario 3D World.
Come Mario Kart 8 it'll be full steam ahead and no looking back

I don't think it would be more popular.....other then there would be extra games I guess at launch but I really think this is a trend. PS4 and XBox1 will both struggle to sell 5 million by this time next year. Less casual gamers will jump on the new generation. There is no real reason to upgrade. Everyone already has a Blu-ray or dvd, or internet connecting device in their home. The graphic advancement just isn't noticeable to the average consumer. There just won't be the mass appeal for a console that we have had in the past. I think 50 million units might be a good number this generation. Only time will tell.
A great year, amazing games, and I hope 2014 would be even better. I've mine since day one.
@Jazzer94 OMG YES That "X" Looks like a KILLER APP nintendo needs!
Heh, happy birthday WiiU. Next year outta be a lot better from here.

I see the trolls are out for this. Either way, I just got the system, and I can say that I truly enjoy it. I don't have the scratch to get all the games I want. Right now settling into WWHD and Pikmin 3. Both are beautiful and phenomenally fun. And I had no idea how awesome the offscreen play would be until I actually needed it. That has turned out to be a much bigger highlight than expected.
It was a good first year for Wii U, not great, but first years rarely are great. I bought Nintendo Land, Scribblenauts Unlimited, NSMBU, The Wonderful 101!, Pikmin 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, not even including some digital games from the eShop like NSLU. Here's to always improving, however, as even though I greatly enjoyed the first year there is plenty of room to grow. What is likely to be the best Wii U title yet is released this Friday! Hippity hip hooray!!!!
Happy birthday U xx
I got my zombi-u limited edition console and box.
While it has only been a few months for me, I have enjoyed my time with the console. I am very happy with my choice to drop the Xbox and return to Nintendo. Just wish I had not let family talk me into switching in the first place.
Happyyyy Bday U XD
Rayman legends,Lego city,pikmin3,nsmbu+dc,WW,sky landers giants.and many eshop titles

It's been a year full of ups and downs. But as a day one adopter I'm still thrilled with the wiiu and never want to get rid of it..
I've been very entertained by my Wii U since I got it a few months ago. Lego City, Wonderful 101...even the surprisingly fun Nintendo Land. And I'm still working my way back to the heavy hitters of Pikmin 3, NSMBU and Wind Waker HD, among a few other things. Here's hoping year 2 and beyond breathes some life into it!
I am getting tempted to get one but if I do I will probably regret it (I bought my 3DS XL a year early. About now would have been fine).
Happy birthday Wii U. It's been a rough year but fortunately, 2014 looks a lot more brighter than 2013. But 2013 left us some awesome games such as W101, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD and what an epic way to end up this year than with Super Mario 3D World.
Wow it's been such a great year :3
(sarcasm)
@triforcepower73 Enough time to make A Link Between Worlds it seems.
I don't own a Wii U yet. I would like to get one this christmas with Super Mario 3D World, which looks masterpiecy.
A question: Could it happen that if Nintendo doesn't sale they discontinue the console and we spent the money for nothing?
C'mon Nintendo! 3D Land and Mario Kart made 3DS what it is today. 3D World and MK8 should do the same for Wii U!
Woo 1 year old already, and I only just got mine a couple weeks ago.
I got my Zombi U Bundle and felt it was a really good investment. Have Super Mario U (+ Luigi U), Zombi U, Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter Ultimate, Lego City, NintendoLand (which is extremely underrated), Art Academy, Wind Waker HD, Just Dance 4, Resident Evil Revelations, Wii Sports Club, among a ton of VC and indie titles. I don't know why people say there aren't games I have so many I haven't even been halfway through one before the next one I want comes out. This tradition continues with SM3DW. Can't wait for Friday.
I'm happy with my Wii U. Played the mario's, Zelda SS, TP and WW on it besides Pikmin 3 which I really enjoyed in summer, Rayman Legends which was awesome and I just finished Darksiders II which was an amazing journey. 2014 looks even better
Happy birthday, Wii U! Thank you very much for being a part of my entertainment set-up since the 2012 doomsday! lol
Naw but seriously. Despite the low sales figures and all the gloom-and-doom talk surrounding Nintendo, I've loved every minute of owning a Wii U. I look forward to another thrilling year that includes Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. Wii U, a more robust Virtual Console library (hopefully), and much more.
My first games on Wii U consisted of Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Trine 2 Directors Cut. Eventually I would own the likes of ZombiU, Pikmin 3, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Wind Waker HD.
More importantly Mickey Mouse is 85 today.
Huzzah! Wow I can't believe I've had it for a whole year already. I have purchased 15 retail games, 9 eShop games and 22 VC games. And there are still games I want to get. I really think people think the Wii U has no games because the internet tells them to.
...Looking at that list makes me realize I play games way too much haha.
@kuribo4 "A question: Could it happen that if Nintendo doesn't sale they discontinue the console and we spent the money for nothing?"
That's very unlikely. If they don't support it themselves for 4 years minimum that will send the message that Nintendo doesn't support its own consoles and will have a disastrous effect on their brand identity and the sales of their NEXT console.
At this point all they really can do is ride this out, even if sales don't improve much. But they have enough money to take an operating loss for 6 decades, so they'll be fine in the long run either way.
I hope they find success in year 2.
I've been enjoying my Wii U since day one. The first time I ever questioned my purchase was last night when I watched one of my hallmates play Assassin's Creed IV on his PS4.
I went to my room and looked at the GamePad. I picked it up and wondered if I had spent my money on the right thing. The internet only solidified my worries with the headlines reading "PS4 Sells a Million Systems in 24 Hours!" I glanced back at my Wii U, that big white Nintendo console, and wondered what gaming really was...
Then I turned it on again.
I played all six of the Wii U games I had.
And then I remembered. This was what gaming was about. The innovative use of the GamePad in ZombiU, the adrenaline rush of Call of Duty, the all-around good fun of NintendoLand, the wonderful open world of Lego City, the sense of purpose in Assassin's Creed III, and the sheer bad***ery of Batman Arkham City.
No matter the horsepower behind the game, the fun I have with it is what matters.
Thank you, Nintendo. I love my Wii U.
I love the Wii U! Hoping 2014 is a huge year for good games and better sales, but even still, I'll be enjoying the Wii U regardless.
they better hurry up with bayonetta 2 man xD it was the only reason i even got a Wii U in the first place for now all i ever play on my wii u is just nsmb U, pikmin 3, wonderful 101, earthbound & zelda WW HD... i used to play alot of batman AC: armored edition & monster hunter 3 ultimate, but not so much since the launch of the wonderful 101...
Well,Happy Birthday Wii U. I'm proud of you.
"Months of top-notch entertainment"!!!??? Um, I've had 3 weeks entertainment from my Wii U in a whole year. Zombiu, mario n Wind Waker only games I liked at all on Wii U, ignoring inferior multi platform ports which I have on PS3 anyway. Sorry but Ninty made a dreadful mistake releasing a console which they couldn't support themselves. We get delayed drips and drabs for a year and most of the games have been underwhelming to say the least. Regardless, I'm hanging onto mine hoping things pick up soon.

Wii U has been good to this family. Happy Birthday! Too many games now, can't keep up. There was a bit of a drought there in early 2013 but now I have several games waiting to be revealed at Christmas and Nintendo Land still gets played several times a week.
Some of you need to broaden your video game tastes a little. Get some friends to come over or get family involved. Nintendo games are best with groups or at least a couple people.
It's also the 12th birthday of the Gamecube, which really was a brilliant console.
Reading all the negative news and doom and gloom in the gaming media and on forums I have to wonder if the rest of the world got the same Wii U console I did a year ago. The Wii U is an awesome console but you'd never know it without trying it yourself. Seems burying Nintendo is the "in" thing these days.
Wii all wish U a happy birthday. Maybe one day you will become the greatest console ever
I have only owned my wii u for 4 months but so far I absolutely love it and look forward to next years releases
I played to completion: Arkham City, immediately moved to Darksiders 2, then onto Mario, then Lego City, then Injustice, Pikmin 3, then Luigi, Ducktales, Wonderful 101, Rayman, Windwaker, then Arkham Origins. And I threw in a bit of Nintendoland, Tekken, Sonic Racers, FIFA, Wario, Infinity and Wii U Party. I enjoyed them all and had very little time where I didn't have domething to play. Only AC3 let me down. That makes 20 games unless I missed something.
I don't care what anyone else thinks about the Wii U, I've had a great time with it ALL YEAR. Best time I've had gaming.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WII U!!!! Happy Birthday, Wii U! After games and everything, I've spent more than a thousand bucks! Still trying to beat all those games Windwaker then Wonderful 101 then Rayman!
Please don't be as crappy as your first year, I know a 3ds-like rebound is less thank likely, but at least don't be the worst console of the last 20 years wii u, just aim for that.
Happy Birthday Wii U!!
I didn't like your first year,.....I loved it!!!! Keep the momentum going, you'll get it un 2014. Zombie U is one of the most underrated games ever!!! Release Pro Wrestling on VC, and save me some of that cake!!!!!!!
I like how third party titles were purposely not listed
I've only been a Wii U owner for over a month and I've only purchased two retail games (NSMBU & BLOPS2) so I don't have much to say about it's first year. I'm just hoping that the next year will be healthier and better.
I don't think Nintendo was ready for the HD era. Or rather, they didn't have experience in it and had the misfortune of games being released later than anticipated. And now that they have more experience, I'm really hoping that they find success as I'd love to see the full potential of the Wii U and the promise of unique gaming experiences come to fruition.
Also, March/April '14 can't come soon enough as I love Mario Kart and can't wait for MK8!
@SavantSupreme BO2, NSMBU, Nintendo Land, AC3, Pikmin 3, Injustice, Trine 2, Wii Party U, COD Ghosts, Rayman Legends, Sports Club (both) and bunch of VC games.
Just like with the 3DS, I made the mistake of being an early adopter of the WiiU. I should have waited at least 9 months after their original release before making either purchase. I feel it is an issue with gaming these days. Systems and games are released too early in order to make certain dates. Features like TVii are advertised like they will be coming out at launch, only to have them delayed several months (Nintendo isn't the only one guilty of problem like this). I should have learned my lesson from the 3DS troubled launch and waited to buy the Wii U. Overall, I am happy with my Wii U now. There are finally some good games available or soon to be available for the system. They really need to come out with a system that has more internal memory though.
The combined accounts between systems is a step in the right direction for Nintendo as well.
Happy Birthday, Wii U!
My Wii U is probably my least-loved video game system I've ever owned. The game delays made being an early adopter pointless, but at least the games have finally been coming the past couple months, and I'm sure it will succeed eventually.
what a boring year. at least mario comes out friday.
Yea its been a rough first year for the console. I have 7 games for it so far and they're all pretty good though. I just hope Nintendo can deliver more of the goods in 2014.
Happy birthday wii u. I hope you make it to 2.
Happy Birthday Wii U! Cheers until the next console generation in 2019 / 2020!

I am set for this gen. I have my Wii U for Nintendo exclusives and my PS4 for third party games.
My Wii U has yet to turn one (it's birthday will be Christmas Day), but I wish the Wii U brand name a very happy first birthday! Your first year was rough...but you have a bright future ahead. Happy bday, Wii U. I love the console and will continue to support it. Here's to success in the future!
I had it since day 1, had some fun, but its been OFF way too much because of a lack of games worth playing.
Now I have a PS4, so lets see what happens. I know I will get mario 3D and love that, but not sure there is anything else anytime soon that I will want on it.
Happy Bday to Wii U and to me because its my birthday the 19th!
The Wii U had a pretty horrible first year, honestly. For me, there were really no games to play. However, the 3DS was like that and look it now! Here's hoping the Wii U brings it back in 2014.
Being a Nintendo fan, I honestly enjoyed the unadulterated fun that Wii U has offered thus far. Everyone tells me that the games look childish (my friends all made fun of me for buying Wonderful 101... Their loss..) but I don't care, I have fun with my Wii U and it gets played quite a bit. Sure, there was a lack of games for a while, but I had fun with what I had. Plus, the games that are coming in the near future will definitely complete the tri-force of Fun, Hardcore, and Beautifully polished fun. Happy Birthday Wii U.
If your PS4 or X Box One breaks, tell your friends to buy a Nintendo Wii U!
Happy Birthday Wii U!

As far as retail releases go, I got:
while with the eShop, I got:
Suffice to say, I (unlike many people on the internet) didn't encounter a problem with my Wii U "having no games". If anything, I find it funny that I now got a backlog already to try and get through at this point. To be fair, my 3DS ended up stealing a lot of playtime from my Wii U over this year. Thankfully, I was able to make time recently to sit down with it again and experience the fantastic Wonderful 101 (which is now the top runner for my game of the year, unless Super Mario 3D World can somehow best it). That game alone though justified my purchase of the system.
To think that next year, I can look forward to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the new Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, possibly "X" and Shin Megami Tensai X Fire Emblem, as well as several awesome indie titles makes me feel like the Wii U will have no problem keeping me entertained in the foreseeable future.

The Wii U is the first Nintendo console I have regretted buying at launch.
I should have waited until now, but hindsight is a wonderful thing eh?!
@plunkettmonster So do I lol. Premium with all my games, accessories etc at home, and I got a brand new Basic model for £129.00 from Amazon a few months ago for work when they were being dropped from Asda etc. I'm self employed, and just thought, sod it, for that price I'm not saying no to it. So far just used it for the GamePad, Youtube, old Wii games and a couple of downloads.
On topic though, got my Wii U on launch day here in the UK and have loved it since day one. Not a single regret whatsoever. Happy Birthday number 1 Wii U Birthday number 2 in Europe next, then number 3 in Japan on December 8th. What a spoilt console it is lol.
yay.. one year and a bunch of nothing...
for every day that goes by i feel the wii u is getting further and further away from its competitors... in a bad direction.
i got mine from day one... and am satisfied.. but... i need some big games... like the ps gets...:/
Happy Birthday Wii U but sadly I sold mine in the summer for the PS4 because of the LACK of titles I like and Nintendo stupid decisions etc but I hope the system can redeem itself next year so I can have a REAL REASON to buy it again.
I was fortunate enough to purchase the Zombi U bundle, and been in love with Wii U ever since! I have purchased the following games:
