The weekly Japanese charts often tell the same story, with the 3DS dominating the hardware scene and, in the recent software stakes, Pokémon X & Y doing the same. Those trends continue this week, but we actually have positive Wii U results to share as well, with Wii Party U and Wii Fit U bringing a major boost that sees the Wii U climb up to just behind the 3DS XL.
To start with software, X & Y dominates again and reaches 2,731,470 physical retail sales in the region. Wii Party U makes a relatively modest debut in sixth with 37,371 units, though judging by the increase in hardware sales interest in the family hardware bundle that also includes Wii Fit U + meter and last year's New Super Mario Bros. U was surely reasonable; these won't have necessarily been measured by Media Create in the software stakes (Update: we originally referred to the Wii Fit U trial download rather than this bundle). The top 20 games at physical retail is below, with lifetime sales in parenthesis.
1. [3DS] Pokemon X and Y – 162,347 (2,731,470)
2. [PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2013 – 52,826 (136,709)
3. [3DS] Danball Senki Wars – 50,217 (New)
4. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 – 46,729 (2,872,106)
5. [PSP] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2013 – 38,179 (74,181)
6. [Wii U] Wii Party U – 37,371 (New)
7. [PSV] Gundam Breaker – 33,775 (New)
8. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V – 32,666 (531,266)
9. [PSV] Hyperdimension Neptunia Re; Birth 1 – 31,811 (New)
10. [PS3] Tears to Tiara II: Haou no Matsuei – 24,422 (New)
11. [PS3] BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma – 14,307 (86,771)
12. [3DS] Sentouchu Densetsu no Shinobi to Survival Battle – 13,563 (76,137)
13. [PSV] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2013 – 12,866 (37,197)
14. [PSP] Diabolik Lovers More, Blood – 5,929 (16,411)
15. [3DS] Tomodachi Collection: New Life – 5,421 (1,485,035)
16. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 5,263 (3,456,116)
17. [PSP] Shinsou Version: Heart no Kuni no Alice Wonderful Wonder World – 4,811 (New)
18. [PSV] DanganRonpa 1&2 Reload – 4,412 (100,574)
19. [PSP] Seishun Hajimemashita! – 4,352 (New)
20. [3DS] Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life – 4,156 (305,203)
In terms of hardware, the Wii U had its strongest week in recent memory, reversing a trend that saw its sales plummet to worrying levels. It's a significant increase for the home console, only coming behind the ever-impressive 3DS XL, which continues to drop closer towards pre- Pokémon sales levels — last week's sales are in parenthesis.
3DS LL – 58,627 (69,001)
Wii U – 38,802 (2,598)
3DS – 29,749 (40,507)
PlayStation Vita – 27,618 (24,513)
PlayStation 3 – 11,148 (11,460)
PSP – 3,680 (3,807)
Wii – 477 (742)
Xbox 360 – 328 (351)
So there you have it, a week that brings positive news for both of Nintendo's systems (and their iterations). While the Wii U hardware figures still won't have Nintendo's management rushing out to celebrate, they're far healthier than before and set the scene for upcoming releases to boost them further.

Woot!! Go Nintendo keep up the good work!!
It'll be interesting to see if Wii Party U has this effect in other regions (once Nintendo get around to sufficiently advertising it that is). I've always believed out of the entire line-up of games this holiday, it's the one which has the best chance of selling the Wii U difference.
Nintendo is doomed!!! Er... wait, wrong article.
Wow... From 2,598 sales to 38,802... Someone at Nintendo should be smiling
Good for them!
I may be blind but the article states wii party u and wii fit u help wii u sales but I don't see wii fit u on the sales chart at all...Did I miss it?
... THE WII U ACTUALLY BEAT THE 3DS? /I CAN'T HANDLE THIS. I CAN'T.
And guise, just think: A new Taiko no Tatsujin game is coming this month...
@zeldazero as the article mentions, the Media Create report does not count downloads
@zeldazero That's probably because it is a free download right now. The sales boost came during the week it released, so it would be a logical conclusion that it helped to drive sales.
I think the ads LL and 3DS figures should be combined - as really they are the same console. . . . . .
Slowly but surely, Nintendo is winning homes everywhere... we have played this game before, it's all about patience and quality titles.
Finally a day with good news for the Wii U. Let's just hope it's not a one-off.
This is great! Just wait until Mario comes out...
They really need to start publishing Digital Download sales....
what? they actually released some games and hardware is moving? SHOCKING!!!
Wii Party U sales - 37, 371
Wii U console sales - 38,802 (previous week 2,598)
That can't be a coincidence. Wii Party U accounted for about 95% of Wii U console sales. Unless there was a big Wii U price drop or the Mario or Zelda bundles came out.
@rjejr
You need to add Wii Fit U into the equation. Also the Family Set bundle.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/hardware/familyset/index.html
What a pleasant way to start my morning.
It's.... happening....
I think they must have taken my advice and renamed it the 1DS or the 3DSLLLL!
In other news, CoD Ghosts already had 1300 people online yesterday afternoon, so BO2 is probably dead on Wii U but at least Ghosts looks like it might get a decent community.....
Nice, better then being at the bottom of the barrel.
@Nintenjoe64 That is good to hear. If they can give DLC, CoD Ghost will really do much better then BO2.
...damn. Well, where is Wii Fit U? It's at the top of the page but all I see is Wii Party U. Hmm...
@Darel18 some jump huh! I'm loving the positive news long may it continue, we all care about Nintendo and it's genuinely made my day this
@cookiex - I can't read Japanese, and Google doesn't translate graphics, but judging from that link I don't think the Wii Fit U bundle is out in Japan yet, is it?
I think the biggest part of this sales number was completely left out of the article - if I read it right the Wii Party U bundles included NSMBU. (Is that the "family set" bundle you mentioned?) That new bundle probably had a lot more to do w/ sales than any free Wii Fit U DL. I personally don't think a free 31 day trial sells a single console. I just don't.
EDIT - OK, sorry, I clicked on a link and you're right, the Wii Fit U bundle w/ the Fit meter came out last week as well.
No wonder Wii U console sales soared - new Wii Fit U bundle w/ NSMBU and new bundle w/ Party U and NSMBU. It sort of is the Wii Us 2nd launch. I knew 1 game coudln't have accounted for all those Wii U console sales.
@MegaWatts But how does Sonic fair in Japan? I see that he sells better in US than Japan....
If Wii Fit U does this... I don't imagine what Mario Kart 8 will do.... !!!!!!
Nintendo occupying the top 3 hardware sales spots? But this contridcts the daily "Nintendo is DOOMED" histeria.
Well done, be interesting to see if Mario can provide another big boost.
@JudgeMethos It's a free trial download for a month. The game releases Dec. 1. You can only buy the meter right now.
@rjejr They got a brand new console bundle for Wii U Party with a Wiimote+ that looked much cheaper than what we get here. It was announced a while ago and sales have been terrible in the run-up so maybe it's all related. I agree, Wii Fit U can't have done much yet unless it's been heavily marketed in Japan. They're not going to get any sales in Europe with the free trial because there are no shops with fit meters or any promotional material!
God, that is some jump from 2000 to 38000! Hopefully Wii Party U (sounds so aggressive to me lol) will continue to sell for a few weeks in Japan.
I really doubt Wii Fit U (again, sounds really aggressive to me) demo/trial will help sell any systems until they put it to disc.
Is 3D World out in Japan on the 22nd or the 29th?
@zeldazero Totally agree! Can anyone tell me why they don't include download sales?
People saying its no surprise they release games and hardware sales go up are flat out wrong. Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 and Wind Waker all failed to get Wii U hardware sales up to a respectable number. This is a big deal but also worrying if Nintendo believe that Wii Fit/Party caused the spike when 3 traditional Nintendo style titles failed. It could lead to an even bigger skew towards this shovel ware. I just hope 3D World boosts the numbers even higher so Nintendo don't forget about us gamers.
Surprising that Wii Party U will drive the sales - I thought Wii Fit U will be a more likely candidate.
A lot of people were obviously waiting for Wii Party U.
@JudgeMethos Wii Fit U was just the download-only trial, but I reckon it surely helped as it's such a major franchise. As someone else also pointed out, there are impressive bundles also landing in the region.
It's just one week. Like the Vita after weeks of sales spikes, it may very well drop like a rock the next week.
@Peach64 Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 were understood to be failures before they were released. No one expected them to generate sales, they are niche titles and were not marketed. Zelda did cause a sales bump, it was like 300% here in the states.
Also, Wii Fit series is excellent for what it does, and Wii Party is fun. Just cause you don't have any friends to play with it doesn't mean you can call it shovelware. Learn to enjoy all games.
And Mario will sell - in the US. Japan, who knows.
Can we just be happy that Wii U got a good week in Japan? sheesh.
DAMN.
'Sigh' this is kinda disheartening...The past couple of days, I've been seeing Nintendo fans getting vocal about Nintendo's crappy business moves and I thought that this was a very healthy move by the community. Nintendo should be criticized. But now seeing that apparently Wii Party U is selling well in Japan will give Nintendo fans the mindset of "Oh! Alright, now the Wii U is on a comeback trail!" No it's isn't...Personally...I'm a bit conflicted by this...I mean, It's like saying a Barbie game that weirdly goes out a sells a few million copies and pushes hardware sales too...It just doesn't make much sense to me. And second, where are the sales numbers for Wii Fit U? I don't see it. I've said before that I was very intrested to see how this game would sell. But, for those of you who are saying "Yes! this is what's going to save the Wii U!"...Really? Come on. I'm sure you never expected to see Wii Party U sell well. Not to mention, The Wii U sold less than 3000 hardware units last week in Japan, and this week you're telling me it sold over ten times that amount? That just doesn't make much sense to me. Look, if the thing is selling well then congrats. But this is not a victory we should be celebrating.
@XCWarrior
Everyone on here was saying Pikmin 3 would boost sales. Check out the comments on many of the old articles posted here.
That said, huge increase in Wii-U sales this week. It will be very interesting to see if they can build on this momentum for a few weeks, or if sales will plummet again.
@ColdingLight
The Wii Fit U trial is only available for digital download on the eShop currently. Media Crate does not keep track of digital downloads.
@ThomasBW84 & XCWarrior Ohhhh ... Okay.
@Jampie Ok...If that's true, then why did this article say that both Wii Party U and Wii Fit U Pushed hardware sales units when we don't even have the sales numbers of Wii Fit U?
That's.... that's a giant increase. Wow. Interesting to read the Investor Q+A with Iwata and then see this news. Really hope this can be sustained through the holiday. And anyone calling Wii Party/Fit U shovelware has either never played them or does not share my view of what that term means. Or maybe I really love shovels, 'cause damn: both are so good.
Nintendo shareholders everywhere just spat out their coffee.
Claps
YAY! Now SM3DW and MK8 shall do numbers!!!!
Very pleasing news, I hope this keeps up, specially since this holiday the PS4 will not be there in Japan. I am not a big fan of the Wii Party games, but if they do the trick, I won't complain about them. Games can cater to other tastes after all.
@ColdingLight Because people are buying systems to play Wii Fit U for free. I see what you're saying though, you COULD say it's only selling because of Wii Party U, but odds are Wii Fit U had a LOT to do with it.
@ThomasBW84 - According to this page, there was a Wii Fit U bundled Fit Metre released last Thursday alongside the Wii Party U bundle. Both bundles include NSMBU. (I'm guessing the 31 is include din these numbers, there aren't any dates listed in the article)
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/hardware/familyset/index.html#set02
I really don't think a 31 day "trial" would generate hardware sales, but bundles w/ the Metre and the game and Wii Party U might.
Thanks to @cookiex for the original ink.
@rjejr Cool, I've updated the article, I hadn't clocked that those family bundles were last week, they offer quite a deal.
Its good to see an increase In the Wii U console sales hopefully they can keep going higher for a bit. The Wii U still needs to sell more but this is a great start.
In other news, Nintendo employees mystified retailers by purchasing 35,000 Wii U systems last week...
If only Nintendo can keep this up for another 6 months or so and across all territories...
@readyletsgo Because Nintendo is the only company that knows the download digital sales here. Only they can report it.
best week fr wii u in a long while, sales wise
I hate to tell this to you all, but if the casual crowd is what buys the Wii U we're gonna have a bad time.
finally a good news for Wii U sales . happy to hear that
I'll be interested to see how Wii fit U has affected system sale numbers here in NA. I know it's become hard to find a fit meter. I ordered mine on back-order from Amazon last night!
wow... from 2000 to 38k..
@Sidewinder Believe me, casual crowd needs to get the wii u this holiday season, then the so called 'hardcore' gamers will come eventually (with bayonetta, smash, mk8 and X Coming next year)
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
@Nintenjoe64 I'm thinking of picking it up today. I usually get it on ps3, but maybe I'll get both this time(most of my friends play on ps3).
@ThomasBW84 - Always glad to help. (and I've got nothing better to do, I've been waiting for a plumber to show up since last Friday. excuses excuses.)
@Nintenjoe64 - The lack of Fit Meters in stores and the Fit U 31 day countdown is probably going to unnecessarily freak some people out They should just let you buy it for $19.99 if you want, you don't even need the Metre, you can just use the balance board.
I dont think some of you understand what youre cheering. I'm not saying that no fun can be had w/ mini game collections, but i dont think anyone wants them to be the foundation on which a nintendo console succeeds...Nintendo's sales dont make their 3 or 4 real games play any better or last any longer: we need more and different kinds of those.
Good results. Must be a relief to Nintendo.
That Wii Fit U bundle should come west.
Some people are really going to have to get used to the fact that the Wii Fit's/Wii Sports/Wii Party's need to be successful if you want this console around long enough for more core games. The games you are personally interested in are not the only ones that need to sell. It doesn't work that way.
And seriously, that Wii Fit U bundle needs to head westward like yesterday.
@ColdingLighting:
What's not making sense exactly? New bundles were released in Japan with two games aimed at that casual audience Ninty has been struggling to win back all year and they actually did what they were supposed to do: sell systems to casuals. That's all that happened here.
@zeldazero everything ppl said already...is a free download, & Medua Create don't count such ... But, The Bundle seems to have WiiFit U pre-download AND includes the Fit Meter... which overseas right now is sold separately for $19.99 if Im not wrong. Not yet confirm if such bundle will be available at US though.
Interestingly Japan never got the 2DS. Seems the 3D effect doesn't hamper them after all.
@Peach64 Actually, Pikmin 3 gave the console a huge boost in sales in Japan for the first week.
But yes, this is extremely exciting news. I so want to see the Wii U turn around, I love the thing. Let's hope 3D World keeps the trend up.
-Head Explodes-
@ricklongo Japan has always been like that. If Japan got a none MMO Dragon Quest for the Wii U it would probably sell more than it has so far in a day.
@zeldazero There is no physical copy of Wii Fit U yet. Only downloadable promotion.
They just need to repeat this in Europe. Start advertising WiiU Fit on digital TV.
My wife, for the first time since I purchased the WiiU has upon me showing her the WiiU Fit demo now uses it every day!
Now just repeat this through advertising and your onto a winner.
On the casuals thing: "Core" gamers have casual gamers as family, friends, spouses, lovers. It's incredibly important. Plus... if you are a serious gamer, you wouldn't dismiss most of Nintendo's casual games. You can get serious depth and replayabilty and skill with many of them (certainly not all).
@Savino Wii Fit U is a very nice upgrade in every way, actually. (Also, why did they buy Wii Fit Plus if they already had Wii Fit? New features new content, etc. Plus, the Wii U isn't JUST a Wii Fit player it has potential which gives it value.
Interesting. It seems that Japan likes to get fit and party...enough to pick up a Wii U. I really hope sales pick up Worldwide as I will like to see the full potential of this system with future software.
Wait till Super Mario 3D World gets out in the wild
@ColdingLight human nature. naver satisfied. sheesh!
YES! YES! YES!!!!!!!!!! We're gonna make it! Nintendo is gonna pull through! I feel proud to be a nintendo fanboy again!
Listen to that sound... The sound of haters back pedalling and choking on their own BS
Can't wait to see PS4 and XB1 go through this same sales pattern.....slow sales after launch....occasional spikes of sales with game releases....and watch the world talk about how this is normal and to be expected. This is great news....sales spike on casual game is good news for all. The more units sold the more chance we have of getting the type of games we like as an individual.....it can also lead to some crap games but what system doesn't have crap games. I say let everyone buy a Wii U so in the end I can get the games I want and ignore the ones that don't appeal to me
According to Famitsu, WiiU sold 40,118.
Also, Famitsu seems to list digital purchases too. In their list Wii Party U has sold 79,715 including digital downloads. So, basically that 37,371 mentioned in the list made by Media Create is how much people bought Wii Party U as a stand-alone game. The rest are of the sales are from the bundles.
By the way, it really seems that these bundles are doing their job somewhat well. It's a good sign that at the same time in Japan the sales grew quite a lot and the Mario & Luigi U bundles have been sold out at Target and Gamestop in the US. And I know that the Wind Waker bundle has sold well in Finland (or at least way better than any previous bundle since launch).
Now, it might not mean anything in long term, but it's definitely way better sign than constantly selling only 3000 weekly in Japan and having trouble to sell anything in Europe.
I see alot of people complaining about how Nintendo could lean towards casuals because of this sales urge, but I have a great solution to this problem...
...bombard the emails of third parties with a link to this article to show that the WiiU is on the rise and now have the 'install base' to buy there games.
What's the worse that could happen? We get GTA V perhaps?
It's good to see the Wii U actually selling well. All Nintendo needs to do this time is to maintain momentum. I will be taking the plunge as soon as I see a release date for Smash Bros or the new Zelda.
Go, Wii U, go! I can smell the cash flowing into Nintendo, or maybe that's my rotten lunch from the campus cafeteria...
If someone gets a Wii U and a Wii Fit Meter and gets the download Wii Fit U (And that is it) does Nintendo take a loss ?
(Presuming the get the meter get Wii Fit U Free thing still exists.)
Haven't seen these numbers for the Wii U since Pikmin 3 launched in Japan!!
@Savino "I really dont see why people who already own wii fit plus would buy a new system and a new game that in the end of the day is the same?! "
Why don't you tell me what game series you like the most so I can tell you how every one of them is the same?
Don't really, the point I'm unsubtly trying to make is that if you don't like a game series and pay attention to it, every game in the series will seem the same. People say the same crap about COD or Zelda or Mario, or Assasin's Creed or Halo. It's only the people who care about the series that notice what's different about them.
Nice sales figures but will it stay as high next week or the week after or is this just another temporary increase.
@Savino This sales increase sort of undercuts your point.
@rjejr
This actually surprises me. I didn't think these games were going to do it for them, but uh, looks like Nintendo really DOES know their market. With sales picking up in the US, and now Japan, this could be a decisive turning point for the console. Take a long look at that hardware chart dominated by Nintendo in the top 3 slots. I've got a feeling in a couple years that's all we're going to be seeing.
@ScorpionMG
No, the hardcore gamers won't come if casuals buy it. If casuals buy it expect more of the likes of Carnival games, Wii/Mario Party clones, cheap sport games, and many others.
0_0 thats quite a Wii U jump!!!!!!!!! Hope I can stay with in the high 10,000's or low 20,000 for the rest of the year. The new Vita clearly has helped the Vita gain some sales in Japan as well. Then of course the 3DS is unstoppable (who doesn't own one in that country?????????)
@FutureAlphaMale Let's not use absolutes. "Everyone" was not claiming Pikmin 3 would boost sales. I know somewhere in some comment I said if Pikmin 3 got to 100,000 total sales it would basically be a miracle. W101 I knew would struggle to hit half of that. They are too complicated for the average gamer - which is 90% of gamers sadly.
These aren't amazing, but they're great for pre-Mario sales.
Very happy for the WiiU success story. Though, I've always been a day 1 Nintendo console buyer but with the launches of 3DS & WiiU and seeing the better deals they provide a year later is gonna make me hesitant on the next console day 1 purchase. I mean, 32gb console, mario & luigi u, we paid like $430 + tax, all that now for $299 plus tax. Just glad to finally see WiiU building a better install base.
@PvtOttobot
Kalm Yo' Tits, its just a week. Lets see if there's a trend after this or the sales go down again.
ATTENTION! All the Nintendo haters have disappeared! Somebody call the Police. Wii U Wii U Wii U Wii U Wii U Wii U Wii U Wii U
All jokes aside, This news makes me very happy! The Wii U is (finally) getting some momentum. Let's all hope it keeps up! And if you will excuse me. I am going to get myself dressed because in about an half-hour my Gamestore opens and i received a text that my Mario and Luigi Wii remotes have arrived )))))
Nice to see wii u numbers lets hope this is the start of wii u's rise and not just a blip
@DarkwingLz Well, its been a year now for the Wii U eshop and two years for the 3DS eshop, why aren't they reporting on digital sales each quarter?
I wanna know 'cause these sales figures are not right when totaling sales each week/month/Q/year. False numbers to me. And when they are charging the same or more for full games as in store its important.
Same with Sony and Microsoft.
Wow I am genuinely shocked, good for them.
Question is will these games sell it in the west.
@MadAussieBloke I hope that after choking, they vomit right around the holiday season, then are forced to eat it after sales figures come in, next year.
@JimLad These games? I don't think so Wii Party U, maybe, but I really don't see Wii Fit U making any waves over here. Maybe, but I doubt it.
@JaxonH - "I didn't think these games were going to do it for them, "
What almost everybody fails to mention is NSMBU was in each bundle as well - Wii Party U and Fit. And there was an extra Wiimote in both. I'm going to guess that before this Nintendo Land was in the bundle and nobody wanted that. Not saying Mario alone would have caused this much of an increase, but Mario plus Party plus Wiimotes plus Fit Meter, all rolled out on the same day, thats Wii U launch day, round 2.
Here's the japanese link in case you missed it:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/hardware/familyset/index.html#set01
@MegaWatts that's pretty optimistic, seeing as the original Wii Party for the Wii was rated pretty low by a few sites... But Nintendo may have learned their lesson.
@Kuksenkov funny how no one says that to the (yet to be released) PS4/XB1 fans....
@hcfwesker ditto.
good news, keep being positive!
Me too will eventually get a wii U. Its just a question of time.
@Kuksenkov Shut it ya mad goon! Ninty's gonny make it, wuther ye like it er no!
