Wii Fit U

The weekly Japanese charts often tell the same story, with the 3DS dominating the hardware scene and, in the recent software stakes, Pokémon X & Y doing the same. Those trends continue this week, but we actually have positive Wii U results to share as well, with Wii Party U and Wii Fit U bringing a major boost that sees the Wii U climb up to just behind the 3DS XL.

To start with software, X & Y dominates again and reaches 2,731,470 physical retail sales in the region. Wii Party U makes a relatively modest debut in sixth with 37,371 units, though judging by the increase in hardware sales interest in the family hardware bundle that also includes Wii Fit U + meter and last year's New Super Mario Bros. U was surely reasonable; these won't have necessarily been measured by Media Create in the software stakes (Update: we originally referred to the Wii Fit U trial download rather than this bundle). The top 20 games at physical retail is below, with lifetime sales in parenthesis.

1. [3DS] Pokemon X and Y – 162,347 (2,731,470)

In terms of hardware, the Wii U had its strongest week in recent memory, reversing a trend that saw its sales plummet to worrying levels. It's a significant increase for the home console, only coming behind the ever-impressive 3DS XL, which continues to drop closer towards pre- Pokémon sales levels — last week's sales are in parenthesis.

3DS LL – 58,627 (69,001)
Wii U – 38,802 (2,598)
3DS – 29,749 (40,507)
PlayStation Vita – 27,618 (24,513)
PlayStation 3 – 11,148 (11,460)
PSP – 3,680 (3,807)
Wii – 477 (742)
Xbox 360 – 328 (351)

So there you have it, a week that brings positive news for both of Nintendo's systems (and their iterations). While the Wii U hardware figures still won't have Nintendo's management rushing out to celebrate, they're far healthier than before and set the scene for upcoming releases to boost them further.
