@JohnBlackstar Labo has "fad" written all over it. Think: Wii accessories.
Initially, everyone will gobble this stuff up, probably over purchase, even. But after the hype/new phase wears down, these things will sit half constructed and/or damaged piled up in the corner of closets and rooms to rot.
It will be similar to Rock Band/Guitar Hero but not as mainstream or successful.
@Bunkerneath it's actually a very apt description on how Nintendo proper views their consumer. Japan is #1 and all business decisions are predicated on it and it's market. Everything else is essentially lumped into 'not Japan' and they operate accordingly.
@SBandy yes but resources dedicated to this, especially for a company as small as Nintendo, are resources not dedicated to something that does pique our interests.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE my thoughts exactly. This says more about Switch's other offerings than it does about MK8.
I still believe until proven otherwise (with facts and numbers) that Switch is largely as successful as it is due to Zelda and the appeal of it being a true, portable successor to the 3DS line.
Essentially, Breath of the Wild is Switch's 'Wii Sports' and the portable factor is Switch's 'wiimote', both in terms of impact and mass appeal.
Aside from MK8 and Odyssey, everything else about Switch is way less impactful and popular with the masses.
@Anti-Matter I had a Switch for 6 weeks. Borrowed it from my brother. Played Odyssey, didn't really do much else with it. Have no desire to buy my own.
Um, everywhere. My in laws just bought a 55" 4K HDR set with Roku built in for $350.
Nothing new here from Nintendo, though. They showed similar signs of arrogance during the Wii era. We all know how that turned out once that fad fizzled out.
@faint see and this further confuses me. If one is so busy throughout the day and never home..... how do you find the time to play these games on the go?!
Like I said, outside of extended commutes, or blocks of time where one is literally doing nothing else, how does the availability factor change?
@GrailUK "but as a Nintendo fan, I just haven't had access to Skyrim and Dark Souls."
Dude, I'm telling you right now. Come into possession of a PlayStation or an Xbox one day and you'll ask yourself why you hadn't done it a long time ago. You'll be yawning at all these old ports while playing all of the latest and greatest titles in the industry, on day one.
@thesilverbrick I mean you're literally taking the words right from my brainz, even on your replies! lol well done for not drinking the kool-aid. There are real concerns here that I echo as well.
There was a day when I would gloss over them or convince myself they weren't real concerns. Then the Wii U happened and we all know how that ended up.
People need to realize, Nintendo does not handle success very well. This was yet another opportunity to change that perception.
I was in possession of a Switch for a little over a month and not once was I ever like "I must buy one of these" but more to the point, I also undocked it exactly once (although, my 4 year old tried to a few times). I just don't see how people have the time and ability to sink hours into big AAA titles on the go, aside from a long commute or something. Hey, to each their own.
Give me a 50" screen and surround sound any day of the week.
@faint all of that is besides my point though. Old games that have existed on other systems, now being on Switch. Are they all actually selling well because of the portability factor?
"Dark Souls on Switch has the potential to be absolutely huge, offering fans the chance to take the adventure with them on the road for the first time in the history of the franchise."
I swear I will never come around to understanding this line of thinking. Not saying it's wrong or incorrect, just something I cannot fathom is that much of a game changer.
Essentially, 'old 3rd party port on Switch has the potential to be absolutely huge, offering fans the chance to take it with them on the road for the first time in the history of the franchise'.
Is this working? Is this model successful? Are that many people double dipping into these old games a second or third time literally due to portability?
Does anyone have any sales numbers on any of the old ports that have been released for Switch up to this point?
It never ceases to amaze me, the pique in interest for these games around here when they are all of a sudden finally coming to a Nintendo system. Suddenly folks are all in on Dark Souls now lol. Hey, maybe the main character will run around with a Mario hat on. Or a Link shield.
@westman98 based on what it ends up being, the narrative will form around that as well!
Look, there's no doubt that SNES sold less than NES and N64 sold less than SNES and GCN sold less than N64 (meanwhile the handheld division largely remaining strong). Then Wii came out and coupled with the DS success Nintendo "was back baby!!". Then Wii U came out and was hands down the biggest flop since the Virtual Boy sales wise while the 3DS isn't even close to DS numbers (but still comparatively good), and so the narrative shifted again. And now, with Switch having Wii-like success while also succeeding both Wii U and 3DS, the narrative has shifted YET again.
This isn't complex. Sure I'm making assumptions, but I'm also basing my take on what I've seen up to this point. Trust me, before Switch took off, I was of the belief that Wii really was merely 'lighting in a bottle' success. Not so much the case anymore though.
@NinChocolate see my previous comment, this is nothing new for Nintendo. When their back is against the wall, they're suddenly brilliant. But when they're at the top of their game they're extremely vulnerable to missteps.
Nintendo success is cyclical. This is just like back in the GameCube days when they succeeded it with the Wii. Then after wii they rested on their laurels and got burned with the Wii U. Same thing will most likely happen with the success of switch. Expect the next console to largely be another flop ala GameCube and Wii U.

Re: Former Metroid Prime Developer Reflects On Cut Content From The Trilogy
@gortsi Oh I wasn't necessarily talking sales figures, more so the reception it receives.
Re: Former Metroid Prime Developer Reflects On Cut Content From The Trilogy
@gortsi because of the unrealistic hype Nintendo fans are putting around the game. Expectations will be too high to satisfy.
Re: Former Metroid Prime Developer Reflects On Cut Content From The Trilogy
@thesilverbrick the thing is, Retro isn't even that Retro anymore. It's like the new Rare, just a name. The key players from the GCN/Wii era are gone.
Aside from that, I just feel like MP4 is going to be a huge let down, because.... well, Nintendo fans.
Who knows, maybe it'll end up being the Metroid version of Breath of the Wild and we'll all be happy.

Re: Labo's Cardboard Revolution Adds Almost $1.4 billion to Nintendo's Value
@SimplyCinnamon53 why, exactly?
Are you the same kind of person that is in here bashing analysts when they aren't so high on Nintendo?
Funny how when they don't have good things to say, everyone around here acts like these people don't know what they're talking about.
Re: Video: There Are More Nintendo Labo Toy-Con Than You Might Expect
Labo is going to be, at best, the next amiibo deal or at worst something we all look back on in 2 years and go 'lol 'member? you 'member!"
Re: Video: There Are More Nintendo Labo Toy-Con Than You Might Expect
@WonderfulTorment "You're not meant to like them"
LOL. Yeah no. Pretty sure that's not Nintendo's stance on the situation.
Re: Nintendo Download: 18th January (North America)
Was hoping for another Turbo Graphix 16 VC game on Wii U, just to dig salt into that switch wound a bit deeper.

Re: Nintendo Is Announcing "A New Way To Play" Later Today
Sounds like Nintendo is preparing to botch success again, as I predicted on here before. On the surface, this doesn't sound very good at all.
Re: Rumour: Another 2D Metroid Has Begun Development
I mean lets be honest it's probably Samus Returns HD for Switch.
Re: Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D Land And Ultimate NES Remix Join The Nintendo Selects Range
Nice. I've been gun shy on A Link Between Worlds' $40 asking price up to this point. Impulse buy now.

Re: Nintendo Reiterates That It's Not Interested In Virtual Reality Or 4K Support

This is simply not true. VR is bigger than ever right now.

Briefly played the first Escapists on XB1 for the free.99 and I gotta say, it was not a fun time. Overly convoluted game play.
