Sign of the times I guess. I'm so old I remember when Nintendo was pretty much what Sony has been for the last 15 to 20 years. They were the one-stop-shop gaming console and also put Sega in their place. I guess I'm just an old bitter ex-Ninty fanboy pining for the old days again. Those days are clearly long gone, but one can still hope, no?
@shadow-wolf thanks for the post, very thoughtful and thorough.
To your question, I dislike the switch because it's a day late and a dollar short for me, a recently converted ex-NDFer. I used to blindly defend all of nintendo's decisions and products and lie to myself that they had it all figured out, this thing known as the video game industry (and by extension, the consumer).
Had the switch came out in 2012 instead of the Wii U (day 1 Wii U owner here... regretfully) I'd probably still be just as big a fanboy.
But, be as it may, the Wii U came out instead, I convinced myself for 3 years that it was the right move and all was still well in the mushroom kingdom and that it was truly a great successor to Wii (one of my favorite systems of all time).... until I acquired an Xbox One. Now, it's not so much the fact that it was an XB1 vs. a PS4, but rather the idea that these other two companies are on a whole nother level in terms of what they are after in the industry and the consumer, and what I was actually looking for from my video game company of choice.
I have played more, better games in my 2 years with my XB1 than I ever did on both my Wii U and 2DS XL combined.
I borrowed my brother's Switch for about 8 weeks and, while Odyssey was enjoyable (I bought and beat BOTW on Wii U, Pro Controller only), it was too little too late for me to invest another $300+ into a Nintendo system so devoid of what I expect (and already get) from my other console.
Everyone always throws the portability argument at me as well. Nah. I'm good.
Nothing beats sitting down in front of my 55" 4K set with surround sound and flying through a match of WWII or a 2 hour binge of Far Cry.
@electrolite77 @crono1973 the biggest reasons for switch success is the removal of dual screen gameplay, true portability and the removal of the 'Wii' branding.
@Ralizah Yeah i guess so, which all falls under my "waiting around a lot" scenario.
Having said that though, if I'm the employer in either of those scenarios I'm firing that employee. They can find more constructive uses of their time than playing video games on the clock. But I digress...
@kirbygirl yeah I can see that I suppose. I've personally never been able to "micro game" for lack of a better term; the ability to pick up and play for just minutes at a time.
@Ralizah are you people even reading my comments fully? I explicitly have stated, numerous times, that OUTSIDE OF an extended train ride/car ride/flight and the waiting that comes along with that.
@electrolite77 "I understand that it can be difficult to empathise with lifestyles you haven't experienced."
No I get it, I'm mid 30s married with a 4 year old. There's no way I'm playing anything, portable or not, with my situation. Gaming time is after hours when everyone else is asleep (or otherwise out of the house or something). Other than that I'm doing my family a disservice looking down at a portable gaming device playing and focusing on that instead of devoting attention to them.
@gaga64 the extended train ride i get, which is why i notated it in my original comment. But the idea of people are "so busy on the go" and have hectic schedules that keep them away from their TVs, and yet, somehow they have the time to play games away from the TV with said hectic schedule and busy days.
@electrolite77 you can listen to music while doing other tasks though. If you're playing Breath of the Wild on your switch you're probably not doing other things at the same time.
@Faruko i just cannot bring myself to fully understand the argument of 'well i'm just so busy that the switch and its portability is perfect for me'. I feel as though you're either busy and occupied with other things or you're sitting around in a public place staring at a screen playing a game just as you would at home in front of your TV.
Now, let's say you're going on a flight, or a long car ride where you're not the driver. Other than that I just don't follow.
@Faruko there's more than 3 people commenting on this very article that own a Wii U. Hell, almost everyone that visits this site owns or has owned a Wii U. Stop painting a narrative that isn't true in an attempt at making switch seem more appealing than it is.
@Agramonte "Once we work on a project "by committee" - it is a fiasco. we literally wait around for months and nobody wants to take the initiative - or we spin our wheels going in different directions."
@PanurgeJr no worries, others lack a solid counter argument often on here as well.
Enjoy your switch, by all means. I did my Wii and Wii U. However, I also no longer get frustrated at Nintendo's goofball business decisions that end up shooting themselves in the foot. Nor do I get angry at 3rd parties. Nor do I bash titles on other systems literally because they're on a Not Nintendo gaming console.
Try it sometime.
EDIT: Just checked your comment history and wow do you reply to me a lot. That is, when you're not bashing the fine folks that keep this site up and running for us all.
When people think video games, they think PlayStation and/or XBox.
Switch, the device itself (not necessarily Nintendo proper) is also becoming top of mind, however so did Wii. Unless Nintendo parlays Switch into a 10+ year dominance in mindshare for Nintendo as a whole (meaning they don't follow it up with another Wii U like dud) then I will continue to believe only the facts, that the PlayStation and XBox brands are the front running mainstream "face" of video games.
@Evenmoresteven bingo. 3 or 4 years ago I used to be of the "what are they working on?!" camp. Not anymore. They aren't "working on" anything of substance.
@BraveBiT "The kids (or parents of these kids) going through coding classes, or robotics, or that have any passing interest in interfacing software with cardboard-ware (heheh) are the targets here."
Definitely sounds like a booming, mainstream market to me....
@mj2k18 who cares if they have the "guts" to try new crap. It doesn't mean it's still not crap. There's a reason Sony and MS have been the market leaders for YEARS. They know what the market demands and they supply it.
And hey, the reason Switch has been so hot? Not because of ideas like labo i can guarantee you that. It's because the market demanded a system they could play literally anywhere, TV or on the go. Simple, clean, easy.
Let Nintendo keep down this road of gimmickry distractions in regards to switch, and watch that market share dwindle with it.
Also, can Nintendo, for once, pump the damn brakes on 2D side scrollers? Like my god between Wii, Wii U and now Switch, the 2D platformers are just too much.
@Rika_Yoshitake line up the NDFers blindly defending Nintendo for this move.
It's not about people that were or were not going to purchase the Wii U version (although the price discrepancy sure lends some credence), it's about the principle of the matter.
Just the latest in shady nickel and dime tactics from the little N. Labo and its joke of a price point being the move just prior.
@JaxonH it's not so much that it's niche as it's something nobody will be playing with months from now. Cardboard is cardboard, and the price is wrong.
@westman98 hey hopefully they completely buck their own trends of the past and forge ahead anew. I for one am hoping they do and announce a Switch pro next year with a tegra X2. But let's be real...

So, pretty much current Nintendo.

@JamesR or the current switch goes to $200 in 2019 as Nintendo rolls out the new switch pro with the tegra X2.

Anyways. There is absolutely a subset of the Nintendo base that will blindly defend any and all Nintendo actions, motives and/or decisions.
Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Switch)
I've said it before, I'll say it again: no way this game should be priced the same as, say, a Far Cry 5. Unbelievable.
