Re: Feature: Three Laps, Two Players, One Vegas Jumpsuit - 10 Things We'd Love To See Added To Mario Kart World

dr_frahnkunsteen

All I really want is a marking on the Free Roam mini-map telling me which direction is north like in BotW or TotK). I like the bare-bones map because it encourages exploration, but not having some method of getting my bearings means I’m constantly getting turned around on courses and leave the course driving in the wrong direction to get where I wanted to go. It took me like 45 minutes to navigate to Acorn Heights so I could dress Wario as a bee. Right now the only way to check direction is to use Y to open the big map where your marker has an arrow showing what direction you are facing. Unfortunately for me, I’ve also been playing a bunch of TotK so my my muscle memory for “open map” is permanently fixed to the Minus button, and therefore I’m constantly opening photo mode, a mode I have no interest in, and requires confirming through a dialog box to leave, in which i invariably press B (muscle memory for “quickly exit dialog box”) on my first attempt to leave, leaving me in photo mode and Nintendo had a consistent language across all games, like “Minus is always map” but I know that’s not realistic

Re: Review: Animal Well (Switch) - An Exceptional Metroidvania That Stands Out From The Pack

dr_frahnkunsteen

“It may be the perfect game for those who savour finding secrets throughout vast Metroidvania anthills without being stymied from progression by hyper-demanding combat encounters”

This is exactly why I was never able to complete Hollow Knight. As much as I adored the setting and exploration, I eventually hit a skill wall I simply couldn’t overcome and I eventually left the game incomplete, which really irked me as the thrill of exploring the game’s map was truly intoxicating. I tried the Ori games and really enjoyed their focus on movement over combat, controlling the main character was very satisfying, but I did not enjoy the exploration as much as I did with Hollow Knight. Animal Well feels like a good middle ground. Its focus is on exploration, the world feels as intriguing as Hollow Knight’s and while the character doesn’t move like Ori, the clever use of upgrades described here sounds like a good trade off. Based on the strength of this review, I think I’ll be checking this out.

Re: Random: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Mod Swaps Out Blue Toad For Rosalina

dr_frahnkunsteen

@-wc- I get where you are coming from, I do, but I have to disagree that FLUDD would somehow replace the trunk’s functionality. The trunk is more akin to the raccoon tail, it delivers a sideways attack to the block right next to Mario. Carrying and spraying water is a nice bonus in a game themed around flowers. The elephant also makes you bigger and heavier, so now we’re talking a FLUDD that also doubles your size for some reason, and that you can smack opponents with, not to mention all the other functionality of the FLUDD that lets Mario do things like hover around. A 2D FLUDD based game is a completely different game from Wonder. And besides, Mario makes serval body transformations in this game (and in Odyssey, for that matter) into things like balloons and boulders, so I see no problem with how they’ve chosen to handle the elephant power up.

Re: Splatoon 3: Chill Season 2023 - Every New Weapon, Stage, Feature

dr_frahnkunsteen

@Browny I think the decision to do 2 years of updates was a blessing and a curse. Splatoon 2 only did a year but they updated the game frequently. I think with 3 they thought the 3 month seasons would let a proper meta develop so they could better understand balance between weapons and find ways to develop new weapons to keep the game fresh, and give players who have strayed to other games a reason to come back. Nintendo has dropped some BIG games since Splatoon 3 dropped, and this gives players time to explore TotK or Mario Wonder and still feel like they can keep up with Splatoon 3. On the other hand, 3 months is a long time to wait for new content and dedicated players start to really feel that lull between updates, and it makes updates feel underwhelming when they finally drop because people have had so much time to build it up in their heads. In my opinion every season update has been huge and has always brought me back for a while to see what’s new, but I’ve also never seen a season update drop where the community didn’t complain about not getting this thing or that thing. I think a monthly release schedule with smaller updates might have been better received. Some weapons have had to wait a looooooong time to get their second kits.

Re: Review: CRKD Nitro Deck For Nintendo Switch - Almost Great, But With One Major Flaw

dr_frahnkunsteen

Man what a humongous bummer I was really hoping this was finally the solution I was looking for. I play primarily in hand held and I play a LOT of Splatoon. My joy cons are on their last legs so I’ve been looking for a third party replacement but so few have motion control which is essential for Splatoon. When I heard this had both motion and rumble I got really psyched but the right stick is how you launch your special so this review was disheartening. The search continues, I guess.

Re: Trombone Champ Gets A New Update On Switch, Here's What's Included

dr_frahnkunsteen

One of the things that put this game on my radar was when the Eurovision forum I follow started posting Trombone Champ versions of Eurovision songs. I feel like this feature might be limited to PC where modding is just easier but I wonder if one day the Switch version might allow for user generated content in the same way. I’d love to go beyond the public domain but it feels unlikely

Re: Disgruntled Switch Fans File Class Action Lawsuit Over KOTOR II DLC Cancellation

dr_frahnkunsteen

Woof this game really is cursed. Bioware passed it down to Obsidian who weren’t given time to finish it and released it with a totally incomplete ending. Modders found a lot of the deleted content in the game files and filled in the blanks. I remember waiting for the original “restoration mod” that this DLC was based on to be released back in the day. I never did get to play it because by the time it was finally released I no longer had a PC or a copy of the game. Then I blissfully forgot all about it until this DLC was announced and I thought, “man I sure would like to play that” but in classic Star Wars fashion I had a bad feeling about this. I told myself I wouldn’t buy it, no matter how many times I saw it on sale, until the DLC was released and boy am
I glad I did.

Re: Splatoon 3 Version 5.0.1 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

dr_frahnkunsteen

@Snatcher turf war is the most efficient unless you are really good at ranked and win a lot. Ranked grants more catalog XP for a win, but barely any for a loss. Turf War gives less for a win than ranked, but a loss in turf grants more than a loss in ranked does. Turf matches are also shorter so you can grind more (unless you are really good at ranked and KO a lot). Salmon run is the slowest way to bank catalog XP. There are also catalog XP bonuses during Splatfest, Big Run, and the last week of a catalog season.

Re: Sonic Fans Are Already Really Mad About Sonic Origins Plus

dr_frahnkunsteen

Playable Amy is nice but I think playable Metal Sonic would have done a lot more to bump this from a “maybe” to a “must buy”, especially after Mania have us both Mighty and Ray. The sprites for Metal Sonic already exist, the move set is already vaguely defined from his boss fight in Sonic CD, and seeing the story play out from a villian’s perspective would have at least given us something genuinely new in this game. Oh well, maybe in the next DLC.

Re: Star Wars: KOTOR II Switch DLC Appears To Have Missed Its Release Window

dr_frahnkunsteen

I was planning on purchasing this as soon as the DLC dropped. I was deep in the modding scene for KotOR II back in (holy *****) high school and remember reading updates about the TSL Restoration Mod and salivating over it as the end and climax of TSL is really incomplete and makes very little sense. Alas, circumstances in my life changed and I haven’t owned a windows PC in many years so I never got to play the mod when it finally released. Then they announced this game was coming to switch, my only game console, with the resorted content mod as free DLC and my heart soared. Finally! I would get to play the restored content I’d been waiting so long for. And now, this lol. Well, in any event I’m glad I decided to hold off on buying this (and the original) until after the DLC released.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Tricolor Turf War In Splatoon 3?

dr_frahnkunsteen

I think it’s clear that Nintendo thought the 4 player team would have a bigger advantage than the two player teams. In pervious splatfests my worst experience was going up against a coordinated team that was clearly communicating with each other, and I think tricolor is meant to balance against those types of teams. If I recall correctly you can’t play with friends in the Pro queue so if you are playing with friends and you also happen to all be really good at Splatoon you’ll clean up against teams of 4 randos who avoided the Pro queue because they wanted an easier challenge. I think tricolor is an interesting way to tackle that problem, and when we start playing real splatfests for people who purchased the game and not just everyone ona free demo tricolor will start to feel more balanced.

Re: Sega Reflects On Sonic Mania, Says It Was A Defining Moment For The Blue Blur

dr_frahnkunsteen

@Serpenterror while the prototype music was new to me I can’t really bring myself to count it in the plus column. The full scale competition mode is nice, I always thought Azure Lake was a pretty stage. But hilariously you can’t play them in time attack in handheld mode because it still makes you connect a second controller even though it’s a single player time attack mode. Also, I remember reading the Headcannon team originally wanted to expand the competition zones into full zones for the main single player game. That would have been something. At least 3&K has the games only working Drop Dash and Tails works as expected

Re: Sega Reflects On Sonic Mania, Says It Was A Defining Moment For The Blue Blur

dr_frahnkunsteen

My biggest disappointment with Origins is that the mobile Taxman editions weren’t just great remasters in a new engine, they also took the time to add new things to the games that made them feel new. CD added Tails, Sonic 1 added Knuckles and Sonic 2 added Hidden Palace zone, so I was really looking forward to what they might add to Sonic 3&K. But unfortunately it seems like Sega didn’t let them add anything new at all to 3&K (or anywhere else for that matter; I can understand no Mighty and Ray, but I’m baffled there isn’t a playable Amy or Metal Sonic) Meanwhile, Mania had new zones, new moves, new characters, my biggest gripe with Mania is that Sega insisted on reimagined classic zones instead of just letting them do a whole new game. But since most of the reimagined zones are so fresh anyway (Chemical Plant Act 2 for example) I was willing to let that go. But it’s just nuts that after Mania knocked it put the park so hard that it didn’t get a sequel (with all new zones) and Sega botched Origins. I just can’t figure it out.

Re: Back Page: Which Is The Best Controller Button, And What Does Your Pick Say About You?

dr_frahnkunsteen

Y’all are sleeping on the camera button. It’s for more than just snapping a cute screenshot or recording a sweet team wipe on Splatoon (though it is remarkably simple to do those things) but I use this all the time to record important in game information. I took photos of all the recipe posters in BotW, the type chart in PLA (home to gallery is faster for me than navigating to the in-game tips menu), snapping photos of places of interest in various games that I’m currently not able to access but want to come back to. Mario Odyssey even incorporates this idea into some of their in game hints. It’s like having a little notebook on your switch.
