Re: Soapbox: Sorry Nintendo, Joy-Con Drift Means I Won't Buy Switch Lite At Launch

doll

@SakurabaNeku my kids have had vitas for years, and they have not exactly babied them. the only damages we have seen after years of abuse have been a) a chipped screen after one was dropped on the street and b) a fried motherboard due to having it plugged in during an electrical storm. no drift whatsoever. the vita was phenomenally durable, but given the joy-con issue i would not expect similar durability from the switch lite.

@modular some of us really enjoy physical games. for me, i think i like having a collection i can look at/display and i enjoy the box art. plus a physical game can be shared with my kids.

@Ed_Fairway right, i'm not down on anyone who's excited about it, just not necessarily the person who is committed to all things Nintendo. i'm a relative newcomer, so i want to know more before i'm convinced.

i honestly hope it's a success for them, tho. i think that would be great after some rough years. variety in gaming is a good thing.

Nintendo appeals to fans of Nintendo, i guess. people seem excited here, pretty skeptical over at kotaku. as a newcomer to Nintendo, gotta admit this isn't doing much for me. i'm here for the portability of the 3ds, and i would still rather see a vita-powered (or better) iteration on that than what is likely still an underpowered console. if i'm going to make a major investment, i think i would rather get the ps vr setup.

but i suspect i'm in the minority here.

@Anti-Matter thank you, i'm not keen to mess with my clock, i guess i worry i might mess something up? if not in this game, then in another one. i've just been using the stop-the-mover trick, but sometimes i get frustrated trying to figure out who the mover is instead of enjoying myself.

i had not heard about having a lazy camper. if i understand you correctly, just having a lazy camper means i'll get more money? i had no idea!

i think i just burned out. i was spending something like 2-4 hours in the eve/early night to catch the best beetles, trying to get all the furniture/clothing for four player characters. it's my own fault as much as anything. but i hang on to my town in case i ever go back, and i definitely hope i'll get to play whatever is next.

fwiw, i've been playing style savvy, where i don't so much feel the game punishes you for taking breaks or playing at your own pace. i think the next game ac could give us more control without undermining the game or our enjoyment! but that's just my opinion.

this game. it mixes my feels all up. i spent something like 400 hours on it, but i've barely played for a year. i don't like worrying about villagers leaving, i don't like that i can't dump the one i hate without worrying i'll get stuck with one i hate more, or worse, that those damn paths i spent so much time on will get borked by a new house. i don't like that i can't edit my paths, because i exported and scanned them back and now the game won't let me touch them. and i'm really REALLY tired of catching beetles (never one to gamble on turnips).

i LOVED this game. and it made me miserable in the end. i think i'm just ready for a new ac!

Re: Random: Apparently the 'New Galaxy Style New Nintendo 3DS XL' is Perfect for Style Savvy Fans

doll

@Anti-Matter i'm playing style savvy fashion forward/new style boutique 2; apparently you can unlock male fashions after completing the main story. unfortunately, you access them from the main menu rather than within the game for some strange reason.

side note - i wish the n3ds bundled with the game in europe was available in the us. in my dreams, there would be a dark xl version. *sigh

as for this device, i initially really liked it, the purple nebula is nice, but i can't unsee the awkward mismatch with the blue hinge.

Re: Editorial: The Rights and Wrongs of Shutting Down Pokemon GO Fan-Made Tools Like Pokévision

i think maybe niantic doesn't quite get the mindset of dedicated gamers. it's like they wanted to tap into a casual market and assumed people would enjoy it so much they would stick around.

the gameplay as it stands isn't that much fun to keep people, and those who were willing to stay were those who didn't look at it as an amusing diversion in addition to their active lifestyles, but those who were committed to investing time and money to beat the thing. the only way to "win" is to catch them all. and for those gamers who already love the franchise, isn't that one of the end goals anyway, the very tagline we've heard for years? anyway, it's the same reason people want to find all the secrets in a game, beat every boss, talk to every npc, experience all the endings. and for really passionate fans, to speedrun, or to play with only one weak weapon or whatever.

in other words, many gamers like a sense of achievement. but if your achievement becomes less about skill and clever play and planning and strategy (like looking into the data and seeking everything out in this case), and more about impossible odds (roll snakeeyes 100 times in a row!, or just happen upon everything when you live miles from a stop or even spawns), that's just irritating.

i get why people are upset. and i don't really understand why niantic/pokeco/nintendo don't get it. rolling dice over and over gets old quickly.

as for me, i only still have it installed for my daughter to try when she's back from summer travel. the only thing to play against is gyms i'll never beat given trainers are double my level or more now, and given catching everything is off the table without devoting a insane amount of time, i would rather put my other (more interesting) games back on my phone. i had to delete so much stuff to make room for this thing.

Re: Talking Point: Considering the Angles of a Portable and Dynamic Nintendo NX

doll

@Radixxs i was thinking something similar - the form factor of this doesn't make much sense to me. my 3ds (granted, it's in a shell) already hurts my fingers if i play it too long, as the weight gets to be a bit much and supporting it puts pressure on my joints at weird angles. i've never felt the need to try a wii u, given the screen in the middle of the controller strikes me as awkward. the nx comes across as if it is an iteration on the wii u concept... but with detachable bits?

one of the flaws of the 3ds, to my mind, is movable parts - this means weak points. now, i've heard you can drop it, but i baby mine as it seems flimsy compared to my vitas. so now we may have a console with added fiddly-ness, a thing we'll have to mess with, parts that may be difficult or may wear out through attaching and detaching. and no consideration, as far as i can tell, for comfortable ergonomics?

fwiw, my favorite gaming device currently is my ps4. beyond games, the reason boils down to comfort. it's the only thing that doesn't hurt my fingers/elbows/shoulders to play for long periods. i really hope the nx doesn't have some awkward build where we're essentially using a tablet as a controller or having to bother with pieces that likely also awkward on their own, plus added tedium to attach and detach.

(disclaimer - i'm middle aged, my kids probably don't care about these things!)

Re: Scott Moffitt is Leaving Nintendo

@SetupDisk they need better sales and marketing; i'm not sure how spreading his duties around among underlings is necessarily a good thing.

i have a gut feeling that if this guy had any ingenious ideas, they probably held him back every step of the way.
