In this modern era gaming, where regular patches and updates for our favourite games are the norm, it's not exactly uncommon to come up against the odd glitch or two when a game first launches. What we don't see all that often, though, is a demo that accidentally lets its players enjoy more of the game than was originally intended.
Ahead of its launch on Switch later this month, Nintendo fans can jump onto the eShop and download a free demo of Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Ordinarily, the demo lets you experience the game's first area and boss, teasing you into picking up the full game to enjoy the rest of the story.
But, as you're about to see in the video below, a series of glitches actually allows you to explore usually-out-of-bounds terrain to reach an area found later in the game. If you manage to pull them off – which isn't as easy as you might think – you'll be able to take on the Vehemoth Phosbat, the game's second boss.
The area is reached at around the five minute mark:
APerson13, the YouTube user who uploaded the clip above, says that defeating the Vehemoth Phosbat actually unlocks a further side-story, but "likely due to a missing movie file, is still inaccessible and crashes when attempting to load the first mission."
Sneaky.

The whole game basically felt like a demo to me when I played it on Wii U. Felt like I was just getting started and next minute it was over.
@BenAV Exactly my reaction to when I finished it! It was so good, yet when the game finally opens up and you get a hang for the 3 character gameplay... it ends.
@BenAV @HorridCrow That's concerning. So is there reasons to replay - further difficulty setting, other stuff?
I don't know how these two people up there came up with that "feels like a demo" thing. The game is a complete experience and a very polished one at that. When you end the game it feels like exactly that: you ended the game.
If I didn’t have all the dlc on the Wii u. This would be a day 1 purchase. Fantastic game. When you finish it you want to replay 1 and 2 again.
Didnt get the "feels like a demo" feeling. It has a good length and some side quests (hidden fruits) to collect before ending the game. The final boss was quite hard for me. I remember that there were also some sort of challenge missions that was not in the campaing and would increase the game length and complexity
I liked the demo, but I'm gonna pass. It was just above my price range for something like this. I have no doubt it's a good game though, and I may buy it if it ever goes on sale.
Pro-Gamer Charlie. Don't need no help from his crew. Screw being eaten, just kick its ***!
@auck Considering I got it free on the wii u and it's still sitting at $20 bucks on the wii u Nintendo is just being their greedy self.
this is exactly what James T. Kirk from Star Trek TOS would do if he were to play the DEMO. XD Just glitch to play more XDDD
@brunojenso I think theres a huge disparity in what people think is a short / long game. I work full time and it took me well over a month to complete this back on the wii u. Its definitely alot longer than pikmin 1 and and 2, if you have played those for comparison. If you dont have a job or have alot of free time then I can see how it could feel short if you're playing it for 6-8 hours a day over several days.
@Cosats Ehhh, I can sort of understand why. Pikmin 3 was my first Pikmin game and it felt okay in length (for context, I got all the fruit, and the secret files). But upon playing the game again, it felt incredibly short in comparison, whether because I now understood how to play the game or for reasons otherwise. I feel like if Pikmin 3 is not your first Pikmin, then the game feels short and perhaps incomplete as a result. Perhaps the mission mode is supposed to be what extends your play time because some of the platinums can be rough to do but again, this will vary.
Pikmin 2 feels a lot longer in comparison whether due to difficulty or more content.. Pikmin 1 also kinds of feels short upon return playthroughs, but eh, it was the first game, so I feel it deserves some slack.
All that said, I still recommend this game to anyone who has not yet played the original Pikmin 3.
@BenAV I hate how the day system locks you out from replaying/exploring earlier areas. There should have been some kind of "free play" mode later on, this game had virtually no replay value on Wii U thanks to extras being locked behind a paywall.
@Cosmo_Joe For me it just took a few days of pretty casual play. There are plenty of really short games that I love so the relatively short length in itself isn't an issue but in this case I just wasn't satisfied when I reached the end. A combination of it being a bit too easy and feeling like there was a lot more they could have done with it I suppose. Bright side of it being that short was that I was able to return my physical copy for a refund after finishing it so hey, can't say I didn't get my money's worth.
I absolutely adored this game on the U. Beautiful visuals, engaging gameplay and amazing atmosphere. I highly suggest buying this if you haven't played the U version, you're in for a treat
@BenAV By far the worst part of this game was how it ended. I'm still mad about it and that was like 7 years ago. I bought my Wii U to play it.
Besides being annoying from a gamer perspective even from a story perspective it made no sense. You are on a mission to save your planet from starvation so they send you to this planet to collect fruit. Then after collecting I think about 1/3 of the fruit I beat a boss, then they put me in a cutscene where the crew says "great job, let's go home" then the credits role. But they came to the planet to get the fruit. Why are they leaving without the fruit? Why doesn't somebody say - "Ok, we can stay and collect more fruit, or we can take Olimar back home?" Yes, you can go back to an earlier save and replay it all since then, including the 3 day final boss mission, but it really bothered em they went back to their planet and the game didn' tgive me a chance to go back adn collect more fruit before the credits rolled.
So it was a really short game for me, I only played about1/3 of it, I was so disgusted I never went back.
Well partly I didn't go back b/c my HDMI port stopped working properly, it kept blinking blank every few seconds and stayed black for 2 seconds, and this was after a couple of weeks, so I sent it in for repairs and it came back w/o my save file, so I would have had to restart Pikmin 3 from the beginning. My sons played it, DLC and all 100% I think, but it left a bad taste in my mouth to start my Wii U days. And that bad taste continues w/ all of these full priced ports of games I already own.
But Pikmin 3 Deluxe is on pre-order anyway b/c my son wants to play it again. He's on a college campus now or I'd just tell him to replay our Wii U copy. 2 screens for the win. And a Christmas gift settled.
@BenAV
It was all training for endless Bingo Battle against your SO.
Its excellent as a game but agree it was a tad short when everything finally clicked. I'm buying it because I love it, but Pikmin 2 was much longer and enjoyable. I'm excited to play the challenge maps again and put more time into them
I wonder if when docked, this would look a lot better on a smaller, 720p TV... I bet it would. Maybe I should invest in one for all my low res Switch games lol.
@BenAV @brunojenso good news, 3 deluxe has 2 additional difficulty modes, hard and ultra spicy.
I'm hoping ultra spicy has some special quirks (I mean it's not called very hard, it's ultra spicy, right?) Beyond just extra health and easier pikmin deaths.
I never played 2, and I was young enough that when I played 1 it traumatized me to see all my Pikmin die, so I was hesitant, but played and loved the demo, so I'm all in for day 1
@Cosmo_Joe
Pikmin 2 is quite a bit longer than Pikmin 3.
@shazbot I believe ultra-spicy limits your total Pikmin in the field to 60? I will need to double check where I got that info, or whether I dreamed it up.
@shazbot True, the extra difficulty settings should be really positive additions to the game (and probably should have been in the original). Not enough to tempt me to buy it again though. If they had have re-released all three games so far on Switch with HD versions of 1+2 then I would have been super keen but Pikmin 3 is my least favourite so not so keen to play it again even with the extras.
@HorridCrow @BenAV I totally agree, I had the same feeling about it and it has kept me on the fence about touching it again. I love the game itself, but the reality is most of the game plays like a tutorial to get you up to speed, and then by the time you finally have all the systems going and are looking to get into the meat of the game, it just......stops. It feels like the whole thing was an "EA online game" type of campaign designed to teach you how to play for what was primarily an online mode that doesn't actually exist.
I love it. The art, the play, the world, everything is wonderful. But they forgot to actually build out the campaign itself!
I wonder if Deluxe adds enough from the base game to make it feel worthwhile?
hopefully i will remember this glitch for later when the full game is released on the Nintendo Switch.
I'm kind of disappointed though that the person who posted this video didn't show more game-play footage. it would be nice to see how much of the game can be explored before the demo expires. if there is a part 2 for the video shown above, will someone please send me the link for it.
despite the limitations of day one, it is nice to know that there are no enemies in your way for exploring additional areas of the level. its to bad that the fruit and communication devices from the level are missing. i wonder if it is possible to create addition Pikmin on day one. for all we know that cave area where the yellow Pikmin are born is open for use.
@BenAV my only problem with an otherwise perfect game for me
This was my first Pikmin game (other than the Nintendo Land minigame), and even to me it felt short. It's not because I was having a blast or anything either, I felt the game was just ok.
@BenAV That is...what she said.
Why do you have to post this? Now they're gonna patch it.
@MS7000 i haven't seen any details yet on how the difficulty modes work so if you have a source would be great to read.
@cleveland124 I think I've just got worse at video games aswell as having less free time as the years have gone on, pikmin 2 I completed in less than a week!
@BenAV I've obviously just got really bad at video games since I've hit my 30's.
@1UP_MARIO I felt the same way. Actually wound up doing that myself.

@MS7000 thanks for the link. Looking forward to those more details, I hope they're 'ultra spicy!'
