I bought this for $3 on PS4, and got my money's worth out of it, but it was a close call. Very buggy and disjointed experience. I think the $3 is right at the tipping scale for a fair deal. If it goes on sale as often and as deeply as it did on PSN, some people could get some enjoyment out of it. However, at full retail price, stay far away.
Support didn't confirm that it's anti-piracy, but the only other people I've seen with the same issue was on a reddit thread for pirating Switch games. Basically, a Quick Time Event late in the game doesn't accept any button inputs, and you automatically fail and get a game over. I realize I could probably have switched my account to an EU one, but I worry about some sort of complications arising from changing regions there and back (especially after hitting this bug). I already hit purchase on a new digital copy, so at this point, I'm going to cut my losses and move on. It doesn't look like my save file is going to be usable across regions, so I lost about nine hours of progress, but I can probably get back there much faster this time now that I know what I'm doing and I don't feel the need to exhaust every possible item interaction on my way to where I was.
I ended up getting an EU copy of AI for Christmas, and the game thinks it's pirated since my account is a North American account. There's an anti-piracy feature that stops me from finishing the game near the end of the game. I've been working with support from both the publisher and developer, but haven't been able to resolve the issue. At that price, I might double dip for a NA copy so I can play through it. I was enjoying myself thoroughly before I got stuck. Hopefully my save file works across regions and physical / digital copies.
I might get Season 3 on sale down the road, despite hearing it's not very good. I enjoyed the first two seasons, as well as most of the other telltale games I played. I think I'd be in for a portable version for $4 or less.
One of my favorite NES games. I still own a working copy. I didn't realize it was worth so much. It'd be a great addition to the NES collection on Switch.
I'll definitely get XI at some point, but probably wait for a deep discount. I have V, VI, VII, VIII and IX in my backlog (I stalled out 10 or so hours into V), so don't feel a rush to throw another DQ on the pile at full price. If I, II, and III go on sale, I will probably snap them up, because I enjoy the NES originals.
Hotline Miami is one of my favorite games. I thought HLM2 was significantly worse. I may double dip at some point in the future, but will wait for a fairly significant sale.
I only got an hour or two into Ori, but liked what I played so far. I'm much more likely to play it on a handheld, so I'll keep an eye out for a sale down the line to double dip if I haven't had a chance to get back to it before then.
About half of these games have already been on my radar, but I've only played two of them.
Velocity 2X is so good. My fifth favorite game of all time behind Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 2, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Gameplay perfection. 10/10 for me. I played it to 100% on my Vita and again on Switch.
Severed is a solid game, but more of a 7/10 experience. It gets a bit too repetitive and the movement actually gave me a bit of motion sickness.
I'm debating on getting SteamWorld Quest. I'll be getting it at some point. I'd usually wait for a sale, but I have a trip coming up next week and it'd be a nice game to take along. I should probably address games already in my backlog, though (112 total, 29 of which I could play on a handheld system).
If FF XII goes on sale for $20 or less before I get to the PS4 version in my backlog, I'll scoop it up. It's a game I'd rather play in portable mode, but I've already bought it twice (PS2 and PS4) but have never played it.
A Dark Room is a riveting experience. There are a decent number of plot twists and game play changes throughout, and multiple different endings / ways to beat the game. I've played through it multiple times on iOS. Having said all of that, $6.99 is really steep for what it is. I'll add it to my wish list and pounce when it's 50% off or more.
I've docked my switch twice. Once for about 2 minutes when I bought it to make sure my dock worked and once so my kids could try Mario 3 on the NES app, which lasted less than 10 minutes. I've removed my joy cons a few times more than that, but the time I've had my Switch as anything other than a one piece handheld system is definitely less than an hour total out of several hundred hours of play time. If a handheld only edition had been available for significantly less, I definitely would have gone that route, and if I ever get a second system for my kids, I'd get the cheap version, like I did with the 2DS.
I grabbed OMG-Zombies using gold points, since it's 75% off (only $1.24) as a pre-order. I played the original PS Mini and the remake on Vita. It's a good mindless time waster. Nothing earth shattering, but there's something satisfying about setting off a chain reaction that causes an entire screen of zombies to explode.
The second game is miles better than the first. The ability to chain all moves into a single level long combo and the branching paths make it so much more enjoyable. I played 2 first and loved it, and then found the original to be a bit of a chore.
Another gem of a re-release for Switch. I got the Platinum trophy on Vita. I won't double dip without a sale, but will add it to my wish list moving forward. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't played it and has any fondness for 2d platformers.
Velocity 2X for me. It was already my fourth favorite game of all time, but it was a lot of fun to revisit on Switch. I finished perfect runs on the 50 campaign levels, but I still have to beat the included DLC packs again. I got distracted by Valkyria Chronicles 4, but I'll be back once I wrap that up.
The PS3 version is in my backlog (139 games deep before next week's PS+ additions). If this goes on sale for $15 or less before I get to the PS3 version (a likely proposition), I'll probably upgrade so that I can play it on the go.
I was hoping this would be a two player game, so my kids could play together. It's looking pretty single player in the trailer. That's a disappointment, and if true, I'll be waiting for a significant price drop before getting it for them.
Vita is my all time favorite gaming system, and my favorite library of games, as well. I consider PSP and PS1 Classics part of the library. Vita improved PSP games due to the extra control and visual options. PSP games look and play better on Vita thanks to the exactly 4x resolution over PSP, unlike DS games on 3DS. The proprietary memory sticks were a major design flaw, and I think a significant contributing factor to its commercial failure.
Great review. Velocity 2X is my fourth favorite game of all time behind Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 2, and Wind Waker. I have to confess that the switched up control scheme is interrupting my personal flow with the early levels, but the new scheme makes sense, and shouldn't be a problem unless you've spent dozens of hours with this game on another platform. The new scheme is starting to click for me, but I occasionally go back to the old layout (attempting to warp with Y instead of ZL being the most common).
I feel that the paragraph stating "However, no matter when you sign up to Nintendo Switch Online, you'll always have access to every single game included in the library. At the moment, you will only get the games that are currently available as part of PS+ and Xbox Live Gold that month – there's no back catalogue." to be pretty short sighted. Perhaps in initial value there's a difference, but as an example, PS+ has offered 580 unique games during its lifespan. I probably already owned around 80 of them, but in addition to the six new games per month, I'm paying to keep that library of ~500 games. That's a lot more valuable than a slowly growing library of NES games.
I don't have issues with the Switch Online service (already paid for a year). I just think this particular justification of value is off base.
I have FF I through X-2 already playable on my Vita, but I'd really like a portable copy of FF XII as well. I guess it all depends on price. I won't triple dip (after PS2 disc and then digital copy on PS4) for it unless I can get it for close to $20. It sure would be more convenient, though.
One clarification about the PS+ release - it did fine for Futurlab from a financial standpoint. The problem is that when they try to get a publisher to release the third game, they don't have big sales numbers to show, because the "free" downloads are excluded.
Already have the Platinum trophy plus all DLC trophies on Vita, but I'm buying day one. Futurlab has said the Switch version needs to do well so Curve is willing to publish a third game. This is my fourth favorite game all time behind Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 2, and Wind Waker.
I'm torn. I'd like to wait for a discount to re-buy the original VC. I've already bought it three times (PS3, Steam, and PS4). It's be nice to have a portable copy of the original, but I have played the game to completion multiple times and have a backlog of 142 games. However, I do want the series to continue and want Sega to feel it's worth their while. I'd also love to play an official translation of VC III, although the fan translation was really impressive.
I've been waiting for a sizable discount on Picross 3D Round 2 since launch. Purchased it as soon as I saw this and am already playing. Nothing else is really jumping out at me (for the games I don't already own), but since I'm trying to shrink my gaming backlog (currently 137 games), that's not necessarily a bad thing.
@whanvee It's not on eShop yet. It'll be a new port by a new publisher. They're saying that if people want the sequel, they need the Switch version to sell well so that Curve is willing to partner with them and publish it. It's my fourth favorite game of all time behind Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 2, and Wind Waker (3 -> 1). I was already considering a double dip on Switch. Knowing that they need this version to do well to release a sequel makes it a certainty I'll be getting it again.
I have bought 14 Nintendo consoles over the years (NES, GameBoy, SNES, N64, Virtual Boy, GBA, N64 (again), GC, Wii, DSi, 3DS, WiiU, 2DS, and Switch in that order). I still own 11 of them. Only casualties are the SNES (given to one of my brothers because it had been replaced as an active hook up by a Retron 5), first N64 (forced to abandon it at my parent's house by my younger siblings), and Virtual Boy (had a large solo cup of red wine spilled on it in college and was subsequently too gross to keep). Outside of the Virtual Boy, which still ran when I threw it out, every single one of those systems is still functional, although the NES had a new pin connector installed around 2001 or 2002.
Happy to have a demo for this. I love the NES Mega Man games (and 9 & 10), but never cared for the X series, or 7 and 8. I'm wary of the changes shown in 11, but will definitely try the demo with an open mind.
Already pre-ordered a physical copy, but I'll take the demo for a spin. I see PS4 also has a demo, so I can compare the two versions. As long as the game runs well in portable mode, I'll keep my preorder on Switch. If not, I'll have to change over to PS4.
I've played through the iOS version a few times the normal way and twice on slave free runs. With the right updates, I'd grab it for Switch. It's really quite addicting. I wonder if this will include content from the prequel The Ensign.
I have a PS3 copy that's been sitting in my backlog for a few years. If the price is right, I'll upgrade to Switch. I'd be much more likely to play it handheld.
This news is making me a little nervous about the Switch version of VC 4. For me, portability is preferable to graphical fidelity, as long as the Switch version is competent, but now I'm worried it might end up being a glitchy under baked mess. At this point, I'll wait for reviews / comparisons before deciding between PS4 and Switch.
As far as VC on Switch, I'll probably pass. I triple dipped on the game already (PS3, PC, and PS4), and don't picture going back to play it yet again. Similarly, I don't think I'd re-buy VC 2 after getting it physically on PSP and digitally to play on Vita (and sinking 270 hours into the game during my initial playthrough on PSP to grind out all weapons). I would totally re-buy VC 3, though. It's easily the best game in the series. Best story. Best game play (no gimmicks like some of the fights in the original, plus improvements to the VC 2 formulas). The fan translation was strong but incomplete. I'd like to experience it again fully translated.
Not very surprising, but I am disappointed. The 3DS version with the dual screens showing sprites and 3D at the same time looked really fun / unique. I'll probably wait for the Switch version. Portability is the biggest factor for me with RPGs, and I'm not in a super rush to play it. I current have a backlog of 159 games, including five other DQs that I'd want to beat ahead of time.
Incredibly excited for the game. I'll be getting this for Switch unless the reviews say the Switch version is significantly inferior. Portability is a stronger selling point than graphics for me with this series. I really wish Sega would formally release VC 3 in English in some fashion. It's by far my favorite entry in the series, and I wish more people could experience it.
I used around 150 orbs this morning on the new Legendary Heroes: Ike banner without a single 5* unit. That's spectacularly bad luck. I should have had almost 3 units by now. I'm up to 11% chance to get a 5* unit with each summon. I've never spent a penny and won't start now. The 50 bonus orbs tomorrow are appreciated.
As someone who bought (for less than $1 each) and played both games on Vita, I agree wholeheartedly with the reviews. I would have also given TitF a 7 and BR a 6. They're decent mindless fun on sale. I wouldn't recommend either at full price, but they're more fun than they look at first glance.
I know I'm in the minority, but I have have always been underwhelmed by the 3DS library. There are some real gems, of course, but overall, I don't like it as much as the Vita or DS's libraries, or the Gameboy if you can include GB, GB Color, and GBA as one library. I guess that's unfair to 3DS since it can play DS games, but unlike other backwards compatible systems (like PSP on a Vita), DS games look worse on a 3DS as opposed to better.
I played through this and its sequel Baseball Riot on Vita (bought them on sale for $0.99 each). They're surprisingly fun and worth a buck or two. I wouldn't recommend this at $4.99, but I would endorse a purchase if they ever go on sale.

Re: Dragon Quest XI On Switch Will Arrive "Much Later" Than Other Versions
Not very surprising, but I am disappointed. The 3DS version with the dual screens showing sprites and 3D at the same time looked really fun / unique. I'll probably wait for the Switch version. Portability is the biggest factor for me with RPGs, and I'm not in a super rush to play it. I current have a backlog of 159 games, including five other DQs that I'd want to beat ahead of time.
Re: Valkyria Chronicles 4 Combat Trailer Shows Off Larger Maps And New Features
Incredibly excited for the game. I'll be getting this for Switch unless the reviews say the Switch version is significantly inferior. Portability is a stronger selling point than graphics for me with this series. I really wish Sega would formally release VC 3 in English in some fashion. It's by far my favorite entry in the series, and I wish more people could experience it.
Re: News: Fire Emblem Heroes' First Anniversary Update Detailed by Nintendo
I used around 150 orbs this morning on the new Legendary Heroes: Ike banner without a single 5* unit. That's spectacularly bad luck. I should have had almost 3 units by now. I'm up to 11% chance to get a 5* unit with each summon. I've never spent a penny and won't start now. The 50 bonus orbs tomorrow are appreciated.
Re: Review: Baseball Riot (Switch eShop)
As someone who bought (for less than $1 each) and played both games on Vita, I agree wholeheartedly with the reviews. I would have also given TitF a 7 and BR a 6. They're decent mindless fun on sale. I wouldn't recommend either at full price, but they're more fun than they look at first glance.
Re: Unleash Some '80s Nostalgia As Saturday Morning RPG Swaggers onto Switch
Enjoyed this quite a bit on my Vita, but not enough to double dip with my current backlog of 168 games. Solid game though.
Re: Nintendo Download: 28th December (North America)
Nothing for me this week, but any Switch owners who haven't played Steamworld Heist yet are in for a treat.
Re: Video: It's Time to Look at the 31 Best Nintendo 3DS Games of All Time
I know I'm in the minority, but I have have always been underwhelmed by the 3DS library.
Re: Tennis In The Face Will Open Service On Switch Next Week
I played through this and its sequel Baseball Riot on Vita (bought them on sale for $0.99 each). They're surprisingly fun and worth a buck or two. I wouldn't recommend this at $4.99, but I would endorse a purchase if they ever go on sale.
