We've been having a lot of fun recently hosting release day polls, asking you lovely lot whether or not you're planning on buying the latest big game and why. Usually, this is limited to just the one game, but we thought today deserved something a little special.
Why, you ask? Well, because not only is Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition launching today, but the original Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line and Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation are also releasing on Nintendo's flashy hybrid machine. Four Dragon Quest games in one day? Blimey.
So, while today's poll would usually have been focused on Dragon Quest XI S, we thought it only fair to open it up a little. Whether you're a diehard fan of the series or someone who doesn't know their Slimes from their Cruelcumbers, we'd love to hear from you:
Which Dragon Quest games do you plan on getting on Switch? (576 votes)
- ALL. OF. THEM.
- Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition
- Dragon Quest
- Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line0.5%
- Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation
- The three classics, but not XI S
- A random combination of the above
- None of them
Please login to vote in this poll.
If you're still on the fence about picking up the new game, we think it's an absolute blast and described it as a gift that keeps on giving in our review. Make sure to give that a read to learn more.
Feel free to elaborate on your answer in the comments below. Which will be more popular: the new game, or the classics? Keep checking back to find out!

I have the I & II & III collection on pre-order from Play-asia, and my Copy of XI S just arrived today!
FYI, 365 Games has pre-orders for the I & II & III collection too, they import games and ship them domestically within the UK.

Nothing yet! Still playing Links Awakening. One game at a time for me.
I'll go get my copy of XI S tomorrow and next monh I'll get DQI-III from Playasia.
I bought Link's Awakening as my game for the month. Should have gone for Dragon Quest XI instead if that counts.
I picked up XI a few hours ago but I don't think I'll get the first three simply because I doubt I'll ever find the time to play them.
dragon quest xi s echoes of an elusive age definitive edition!
the longest game name this gen, maybe ever!
I'm going on holiday on the 4th October and still have a couple games in my backlog so I'm not buying any today.
But I will definitely get 11 soon, and likely one of the old ones too.
I have a great nostalgia for the old Dragon Quest games despite never buying or playing any of them - as a kid in love with Pokemon on the Game Boy, Dragon Quest was always in magazines as the "better than Pokemon game you can only get in Japan" and I'd spend hours gazing at screenshots dreaming of playing it.
I kinda have to buy one of the retro games just for that reason - is it best to just start with the original?
I have been waiting.
I had DQXI on pre-order long before there was a release date. Amazon also delivered a day early yesterday.
I have the classics already on mobile. That’s enough for me.
Dragon Quest (known as Dragon Warrior in the US when I played it as a kid) was the first RPG I ever played, so I'll be getting that one. Not sure if I'll get any of the others.
DQ1 first of all. It'll be my third time starting the game after emulators and Android, and hopefully the last. 😅 Not that I ventured all that far during my previous playthroughs anyway.
The first Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior) was my first rpg ever. Loved it. Still do.
However the worst part about all subsequent Dragon Quest games is the way they have bag, and then each character has their own bag. Item management is so irksome! It honestly bothers me so much I always quit each game about 5 hours in
As I have previously stated I am an idiot so I bought 1-3 last night to play while waiting for 11 to show up today. You may be thinking that I could of achieved this by just buying the first game. Yes but please see my first statement.
Don't see a point in getting all of them till I'm ready to play them. Just 11 for now. Still knee deep in like 20 other games.
Well, I'm getting XI S eventually. But since I've already beaten the original, I'm jumping on III first.
@BeefsoundMagnus III and XI are definitely pretty good titles of the series.
In a couple of ways, XI definitely owe a decent deal to 3 for it's setting.. it's a good starting point for the series on it's own but there's easter eggs stuff one learns to truly appreciate when they already have background with the original trilogy, and particularly 3 ^_^
Today, no. Spent too much money recently, sometime in the coming weeks, I will be buying XI and playing through it again. I am excited to see the new content.
Hi everyone long term lurker here figured I'd make an account . I'm getting dragon quest 11 as my first dragon quest game woohoo !!
I'm planning on getting the classics, but not today. I'll wait for a price drop, and in the meantime I hope someone announces a physical release in the West too, in order to avoid the shipping costs of importing it from Play-Asia.
But I certainly don't like the designs of these versions, I much preferred the SNES-esque graphics of the mobile releases I played recently (which were based on the SNES remakes in turn). They really should have stuck with 16-bits graphics both in the backgrounds and the characters. The mix that they made here is unappealing.
2, 3, and 11.
But I don't pre-order anything.
Ever.
"But they'll fire me for bad metrics if you never pre-order!"
Take it up with corporate, hoss.
Ugh, if persona 5 would stop being such an excellent game I could finally pick up dragon quest 11 on my ps4. I would love to have it on my switch but I can't justify buying it when I already have it on the ps4.
Picking up DQ XI S this evening. Played the demo and loved it. Looking forward to the full game.
Looking at the screenshots 1, 2 and 3 look appalling.
For now, none of them.... liked the demo, but Ni No Kuni was just a little too tempting (though it feels like I'm betraying Hero.... maybe next time)
I'm all for Dragon Quest XI. However, the first two games are the ugly mobile ports, which are dwarfed by the superior fan - translated Super Famicom versions. As for Dragon Quest III, it looks decent, but still, the Super Famicom fan translation has been a stake for so long, it's hard to see it any other way.
Nothing for the moment, but if someone can be bothered to review the first three and state if you can force 8/16-bit graphics over that vomit inducing mobile port I might be interested.
Fyi most probably know but there is a long demo of XI freely available, 10+ hours of gameplay. It’s great but I think I need to finish 8 first
Yeah, the versions of DQ I, II, and III on Switch are mobile ports and seem to have some scaling issues as you walk around on and just don't look very good imo. Maybe being played on a small smartphone screen hid some of these issues and are not benefited being blown up on a TV screen.
Playing a translated Super Famicom version or the DW GBC ports are probably still better ways to play the classic ones.
@Retron Thank you for the warning!
@PorllM The original three function as a story trilogy. And they are connected to XI and make that game better if you play them. The original is a little harder to get into, but it's still very good and it's only maybe 8-10 hours long. I definitely think it's worth it.
I thought about picking up the classics, but reading through these comments about how awful the ports are, I might just pick up the GBC ports of these later. It's gonna cost way more money, but I'd rather pay more money for better versions of these games than $5-$10 for crappy mobile ports. They don't look that great either, I'll just stick to my GBA SP and its weird front light, thank you very much. Probably won't play DQ11 anytime soon, like I have time for that.
I played the mobile port of 3 for a while and didn't think it was that bad.
Here comes the thumbs-down avalanche.
@Chunkboi79 Why does it being on PS4 make it not justifiable on Switch?
@Deltath just ignore him, he's a playstation fanboy in disguise
Dies anybody know if 1, 2, or 3 is the best? Was thinking of picking up one of them but can't tell which one to pick up
@HikaruKitsune nice imaginary conversation
@Deltath It's basically the same game but the ps4 has a better coat of paint (due to the ps4's resolution). I would like to see the retro style in action and the alternate sound track. However, I don't see those features being worth $60 to me. I guess I should have mentioned that I already have the game on my PS4. It's just been on my backlog for awhile.
I'll probably get 1 - 3 now and XI later on down the road. I actually finished 1 and 2 on an NES emulator shortly after Hero got added to Smash. I started working on 3, but didn't finish it. I might just switch over to this version of 3 instead.
XI is arriving today. I'll get 3 down the road.
@Doofenshmirtz Oh I'm a playstation fanboy because I don't want to buy the same $60 game twice? lol Forgot that's the reason I bought towerfall, bastion, rocket league, and nidhogg 2 the moment they came on switch for the portability factor. Difference is that I spent probably close to $40 for all these games on sale, also because most of them were stellar multiplayer games.
Don't care about the retro games so just Dragon Quest XI for me. My copy will be arriving on Monday as there's no post today due to our stupid public holiday.
XI came in the mail today. Already completed the demo and got just over 12 hours ou of it so looking forward to continuing on. Absolutely fantastic what I've seen so far. But have a few games I want to finish first.
My copy of XI S will arrive today, but I’ll be camping and unable to play it until Sunday night.
@Chunkboi79 Cool
@Doofenshmirtz nice troll tho btw
@Chunkboi79 thanks, you too
@Doofenshmirtz thanks sweetie
@Chunkboi79 Np sweetie 😘
DQXI for me. Already preloaded it a month ago.
All of the physical!!!!
@BenAV Which holiday is that???
@Chunkboi79 It has a lot more than that. It has tons of new outfits, a dedicated cosmetic slot so you can use them after they're no longer good armor (previously they were normal stat based armor), new trainable monsters/mounts, new items/equipment, a new town with about 10-15 hours of new quests/zones, your party follows behind you rather than only being visible in battle/cutscenes, a new photo mode which is pretty fun, new music and fully orchestrated music, a PS2 throwback mode, the full 2D mode which actually changes elements of gameplay and story slightly, including combat. There's also new hours long story chapters for each of the party members other than the main character that give them their own new dungeons to do, locations to explore and unique party members for those chapters, the battle system also can be sped up, there's new party chat options, there are several more difficulty mode modifiers, full Japanese audio, a dash option has been added for faster running, crafting has been significantly altered in some ways, there are also hundreds of other small changes like altered battle reactions, new event battle dialogue for boss fights and story beats, five hours of audio dramas with back story and daily life info on characters, there's also a new important NPC character added but won't say specifics here, ability to fast forward or skip cutscenes, and also hundreds more small changes like QoL stuff.
Just saying it's a lot more than just music and 2D mode.
@Deltath Oh sheesh, I didn't even know of those features. Now I know why people are buzzing about this game coming to the switch. Now all that might be worth picking up to me! Thanks for letting me know!
I'll buy XI-S next week!
@Chunkboi79 AFL Grand Final Friday.
Used my last voucher to pre order DQ11 as soon as I could. Gonna try and juggle between it and Ni No Kuni
None of them. They will do well though.
All of them,would of gotten 1-3 physically if it wasn't so overpriced compared to digital
I loved XI when I played it on the PS4 earlier this year, but not enough to buy it again even if this version is slightly different. I am interested in I-III, though. (I think I've already got them on iOS, but I doubt I'll ever play them there.)
All of them is where I am at. I am in RPG heaven. I am half way through NI NO Kuni. I have a rule of beating a game first before I move to the next.
Just XI S right now, but if they're good ports, I'll get them all eventually.
XI is currently on its way to me, and while not right away, I'm going to at least want I and III. I'll likely also get II for good measure.
@Chunkboi79 I totally understand your plight as a PS and Nintendo gamer. Some games are prettier/and or run smoother and they often go on discount much faster on PS4 than on Switch. That’s why I’m getting Doom Eternal on PS4 over Switch. My preorder was cheaper and it’ll run better on my PS4 Pro
Just XI for me today.
I purchased XI and the first one.
seriously who would vote none of them thats just sad.
I've never played a Dragons Quest game before and I think I'm going to start with 3. I really want XIS but I just have too many other games to play first. However a nice retro JRPG I can squeeze in. I think it'll be good to start with a classic before going all in with the newest entry.
I was going to buy the all the Dragon Quest games until I discovered they are ports of the mobile versions, just like they did with Chrono Trigger when they released it on Steam. I'll pass on those and just stick with Dragon Quest XI S.
@Whalehome Yeah it's honestly just a matter of what's worth more to the person at the end of the day. On these large scale RPG's that look down right breathtaking on a big screen, the PS4 is my way to go. Which is why I picked up Ys 8 on my Ps4 over switch.
Big scale adventures I really enjoy just sitting in my living room, getting sucked into the world, and cuddling with my dog. The switch is home to some amazing large scale adventures, but they graphically don't always blow me away. Even though BOTW looked incredible, there was a lot of fog and blurry areas in the distance that kind of effected the overall experience for me.
Bought all of them
I’m excited to jump into XI! The demo was my first try of Dragon Quest games and I really liked it. I’m stoked to start over in 2D! Trying to decide if I should go through in 3D first then play through in 2D or juggle both. Decisions, decisions.
Tempted to get them all but my backlog is huge... working through Link's Awakening right now.
@Chunkboi79 Yeah, no problem. For what it's worth, I'm a PS4 owner and a lifelong Dragon Quest fan. I bought XI when it launched on PS4 and I finished it and all of the post game. I didn't think I was going to buy it on Switch but every time I read a new thing about it, I kept growing more and more interested. Some of the changes are just too good to pass up and I almost wish I could experience it for the first time again on Switch! I'm thinking I may play through the game in 2D the whole way, though I'm also interested a bit in hearing the Japanese voice acting. We'll see.
Oh and.. Ys VIII is probably the best example of a game that just runs and looks so much better on PS4. Ys IX looks like it won't even be coming to Switch.
@rrice64 The only name that might be longer is "Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda"
11 is a for sure purchase (should I play with hard monsters Draconian quest??) but these versions of I, II and III look shoddy. Anyone enjoying them that has tried them out? Should I give them a try? I am only tempted to buy them as a means to redeem myself for illegally playing the roms of the sfc remakes.
@Whalehome you do realize panic button is building the switch version of doom eternal from the ground up so its going to look really good.
I'm surprised that 'Just DQ1' is getting so many votes compared to 'Just DQ 2-3'. Unless Square vastly improved this port from the original, DQ1 is NOT anywhere near as good as even 2, and especially not 3. Do yourself a favor - start from 3, and if you liked it, you'll probably like 2 as well, and if you liked that...play 1 as well I guess. It also makes sense lore-wise too, but you didn't read that from me. 😏
@BarefootBowser I am going to buy DQ XI this game on my lunch break. Can you tell me if the demo will roll into the physical copy or do I have to get the digital version? Do you happen to know? Thanks!
@Geobros am going to buy DQ XI this game on my lunch break. Can you tell me if the demo will roll into the physical copy or do I have to get the digital version? Do you happen to know? Thanks!
@Retron This is good to know, so thanks for the info. Truth be told, I would much rather play the original releases than these strange looking ports.
I might get 11S later since I have it on PS4 I'm not planning to double dip right now, but I'm tempted to later when it's on sale for the cool 2D mode. I might check out DQ3 I've never played any of the other DQ at this point besides 11, but enjoyed it enough that I want to dip my toes in elsewhere.
Just 11 for me. I would get 3 but that price is a turn off. All three of them shouldn’t have been any more than $6.
@OorWullie Just be prepared because the first three Dragon Quest games are very much a product of the era it was developed in. There is little guidance in game outside of townspeople clues that can be cryptic and there can be a level of brutality in the difficulty for those not prepared.
If you can get past that, it is a very good jRPG. The biggest thing is getting over having your party wiped, because you always retain experience and hopefully you put your money in the bank before leaving town.
@BeefsoundMagnus well it never hurt to try it!
Plus it might make the quality of life stuff in DQ11S show that much more.
If anything, DQ3 being much cheapers means you're not pushing back your ability to get DQ11 by all that much and may well be able to even start it in parallel to DQ3 if you want(I've already decided DQ3 will be my "work commute" game and DQ11 my "home game" ^^;; ).
No offense but the games seem boring and stupid sorry to you fans who like them they look stupid to me..
I want to get the trilogy, but I have so many games to play already I’ll get the physical off play Asia eventually.. I don’t like how they used the mobile version for them but oh well I’ll still be able to enjoy hopefully if it’s as good as everyone says it is! I only played a little bit of XI’s Demo so maybe I should play more because I didn’t really like it. People seem to be going crazy over this game haha
@Darknyht Cheers for the advice. I think I'll get on fine with it as I played Phantasy Star Sega Ages a few months ago and absolutely loved it. Octapath Traveler was the JRPG that finally got me into a genre I thought I didn't like and it's now made me want to try some of the classics I passed on back in the day. Of the first 3 DQ's, DQIII seems to be the best from what I've read. Would you agree with that?
@BarefootBowser yes thanks. I called Square and they were 99% sure but told me Nintendo was handling the release of the game so I called Nintendo and they told me that yes it will work because it's saved under your user account so when you put the physical copy in it will update and your save will be there. Now I need to just get out of work so I can go home and play!
I actually played the The first one when I was a kid and loved it! I would love to play the trilogy again but just going to focus on echoes for now.
I'll definitely get XI at some point, but probably wait for a deep discount. I have V, VI, VII, VIII and IX in my backlog (I stalled out 10 or so hours into V), so don't feel a rush to throw another DQ on the pile at full price. If I, II, and III go on sale, I will probably snap them up, because I enjoy the NES originals.
@OorWullie I would agree with that. DQ1 is essentially the bare-bones framework for the series and most jRPGs that followed. Once you know what you are doing, you can play through it in a measurement of hours. I have a soft spot for it because it was my introduction to jRPGs thanks to Nintendo Power.
DQ2 introduced the party system and a much larger scope, but doesn't offer a lot of replay-ability. You get the party you get and while you can explore a larger world, there is a clear progression to the story beats. I enjoy it, but it isn't as good as DQ3 (in my own humble opinion).
DQ3 builds a world that feels more alive as I believe this was when they introduced day and night mechanics, and they give you more freedom in how you approach problems. Having multiple classes to build a party from allows you to return to the game to play differently (give yourself a challenge). You can tell that the developers are starting to hone their style and voice for the series.
I'll definitely be picking up DQ XI S in the future. Same with I and III, but I think I'll skip II until further notice.
@UmbrageHill I just got back from my lunch break..i picked up a copy of DQXI. I haven't been this excited for a game in a long time. The demo was amazing. Now I gotta get out of work to go home so I can play!
I'll get DQ 1-3 off the eShop eventually but I really want to carry on with my DQ XI demo data now!
@farmer_humpf I was going to get links awakening but then downloaded DQXI demo. I forgot all about Links Awakening....just ran out and picked up DQ...
@RiasGremory I know it’ll be great, but I don’t really like First Person Shooters on handheld switch. I also got 1/3 off the PS4 version that I couldn’t get for the Switch copy. It was a no brainer for me. Maybe I’ll double dip later like I did with the switch version of the first game
i pretty much stopped getting games at full price so i'll let sales decide
Probably get the two physicals sometime down the line, but I do wonder if 11 comes with a secret free copy of 1, like it did on 3DS.
@Skalgrim My links awakening is unopened because I'm still working through Astral Chain, and Astral Chain keeps ending up on the back burner while I go through my 2nd play through of fire emblem.
Such disgusting ports of these games. I would had bought it if they were the superior Super NES versions but man why can't the sprite be as gorgeous as the backgrounds. Each game looks like it kept dropping frames when moving and there are no QoL features to help you skip long cutscenes. Until I finish DQXI S I probably won't be able to get into these anyways.
XI S is preordered and should be arriving today. Other than that, I'd like to eventually get III as it's supposed to be the best of the classic trilogy.
Downloaded Dragon Quest 1 and will continue to get the classic ones as I beat them. Waiting for payday to get XI S.
Completed my first play through of Fire emblem three houses at midnight. Downloaded the 3 classic DQ games to my switch then picked up the physical DQXIS at work for a mere £36 - great day 👍🏻
Just XI S for me.
I'd love to get the original trilogy, but these are not the originals and don't look that good to me plus I keep hearing about how poorly they run. If they were NES ports, I'd pick them up for sure.
@Retron This is the same company that butchered Final Fantasy VI and had to release multiple patches for the PC version of Chrono Trigger to bring it up to par with the SNES original.
I just found out that these are the phone ports that I already have. This is sloppy by Squarenix.
@Switchcraft I finished the demo at about 12hrs. I played another 6 hours, leveling up, crafting and saving gold. I picked up the game today and can't wait to get out of work to go home and play the game! I think I'll marathon DQ XI this weekend!
I’d love to play the og trilogy first, as DQXI will be my first real DQ game! I heard it had a lot of fan service that I’ll miss out on. But rushing thru these just to be able to notice nods to them in the new one doesn’t feel right, and after hearing they’re the lame mobile versions, I’m not so sure I need to get em right away anyway...
Now I just got to beat Links Awakening!
I want to get XI but I don't get paid till next week so I will get the first one to tide me over.
I’m just getting the new one. I feel the three originals are too old for me to get into them now having no nostalgia for the series
I'm getting them all when my wallet has more of that mythical stuff called money.
I'm playing the first because I am a cheap Toad.
Look forward to demo. Would anyone say its better than final fantasy 7
@sweth_t Keep in mind that lots of switch titles get patch updates well after their release, especially when issues crop up that could affect their sales. Many switch titles continue to get worked on after release. I'd wait for a little first in order to see if a patch update fixes its problems.
@Torn It's not the frame rate problems or anything that bothers me, though those are certainly rather large issues. It's the graphics. The art style clashes so hard. The map looks like a SNES map, but the Hero has a crappy looking "high-res" sprite, and the enemies look hand-drawn. If it stuck to one of those, than it would be fine. And the fact it has frame skips at all means it is terribly optimized for Switch. So if it gets patches to fix the frame rate issues and the way it looks, then maybe I'll consider it, given that it's a lot more money efficient, but I'll be waiting a bit before it gets to that.
@sweth_t True, I don't know why they did such sloppy job. There are many great switch ports out there but this port is sloppy. After doing some other switch port comparisons it just seems to me like they just didn't put in enough effort. It's still definitely playable, but the price tag is too steep.
It did get an update. It's now on update 1.01. It didn't fix any of the main issues, unfortunately. It's not worth the price tag, especially when you consider the fact that the game is relatively short and quite easy.
@Torn Its so strange they released DQ11, an outstanding port of a PS4 game, and yet DQ 1, 2, and 3 are all super mediocre if not bad. Really shows they didn't care about the old games, and only released them for a quick buck. Sucks that they've desecrated them that way, guess I'll emulate the first three then, which is my least preferred method to play games.
