Recently, we received confirmation that the original Valkyria Chronicles was going to be launching on Switch in October, supporting the upcoming Valkyria Chronicles 4 set to arrive later this month. Now, Sega has shared some more details about what we can expect from this bonus port.
The game will allow players to experience the tale of Lieutenant Welkin Gunther, Sergeant Alicia Melchiott, and their comrades in Squad 7. Sega has described the post as "the perfect way for fans to experience Squad 7's story for the first time or rediscover it on a brand-new platform", providing us with a brand new trailer to show it off. You can see that very trailer above, and also check out a list of features set to be present in the game down below.
Valkyria Chronicles Features:
- Valkyria Chronicles on the Go - Command your troops wherever you go with the versatility and portability of the Nintendo Switch™.
- The Full Valkyria Chronicles Experience - All DLC from the original release of Valkyria Chronicles is included in the base package.
- A War Fought on Two Fronts - Taking place during the Second Europan War, the same conflict featured in the upcoming Valkyria Chronicles 4, Valkyria Chronicles follows the story of Lieutenant Welkin Gunther of Squad 7 as they fight to repel the invasion of the East Europan Imperial Alliance.
- CANVAS Aesthetics and BLiTZ Combat - Fall in love with the unique features of the Valkyria series; the stunning hand-drawn watercolor aesthetics of the CANVAS shader combined with the innovative tactical BLiTZ battle system make for an unforgettable gameplay experience.
- A Legendary Series Needs a Legendary Composer - Series composer Hitoshi Sakimoto brings the battlefield to life with an unforgettable, expertly-crafted soundtrack.
The game will be available digitally on the Nintendo Switch eShop on 16th October for $19.99, although anyone who purchases Valkyria Chronicles 4 (releasing 25th September) through the Nintendo eShop will automatically receive a $5.00 (or 25%) discount during checkout for Valkyria Chronicles. To confirm - yes, this means that the discount only applies if you purchase Valkyria Chronicles 4 digitally, too.
If that's not enough, Sega has also shared an add-on mission release schedule for Valkyria Chronicles 4. If you purchase the 'Memoirs from Battle' Premium Edition of the game you'll have instant access to this DLC as it arrives, but other players can purchase things separately from the eShop. You can find more information on this special edition right here.

Will it get a retail release? Although the low price probably means it won't. If digital and physical have to be the same price under Nintendo rules, I don't see a retail version for 20 euros, so I guess it will simply not exist.
If it goes cheap on a foreign eshop I can buy from, I'll take it, otherwise I'll stick to my Steam Link and PS4/Vita for some remote play.
So no discount if you buy the physical copy? If correct not much of an offer.
Great game. Hope it does well
I got my last copy on PC. Never played it again, it was just for safe keeping. So I am good.
Punishment for daring to buy physical valkyria chronicles 4...sigh...I'll probably buy this anyway.
@Moroboshi876 it may be like resident evil. one game digitally and physical collection at less than double price.
@zool i think that u could get a discount if u redeem the ponts from the physical.
@ActiSwitch Yeah, you could buy the physical VC4, but it’s not going to net you 500 gold points. But as I always say, even a penny off is a penny kept.
I bought the Memoirs from Battle limited edition on Switch so luckily I will have access to the DLC as it becomes available. But it sucks that the original game's discount doesn't apply for those of us buying Valkyria Chronicles 4 physical version.
@zool
The game is already cheap enough at $20
@Moroboshi876
A physical release is very unlikely; even Japan didn't get one.
no retail, no buy
Is there any way of buying them all at once?
@RushDawg so why offer a 25% discount?
Already pre-ordered physical, buy I've played through VC1 3 times already. I can hang until a sale.
$20 is such a good price for the excellent content! I'm adding it to my wishlist
Looks very stylish like always, if already at the outset a smitten too heavy on the anime clichés for me personally.
Here's hoping people will like it as much as they did back when it originally released.
This is pretty incredible, although, in a lot of ways I think VC4 is almost a remake (with a different story) of the first game with some improvements, going by the demo, so gameplay wise it's kind of redundant overkill, but for those starting on the series, the story of 1 is still the better place to start since it's sort of the "main" story while everything else is almost spinoffs/side-stories.
@Balchad its only 2 games. They release separately on different dates
Was a done deal for me when it was announced.
Would also get 2 and 3 if they were released.
@zool Are you seriously asking that? To incentivize digital purchases, obviously.
$15 is highway robbery for this classic. Especially with the DLC included.
Waiting to get VC4. I have a wedding trip coming up that my extra money will be spent on.
Never played any of the games in the series but very tempted for the first game at that price.
I've never played any of the Valkyria Chronicles games. I liked the demo of VC4, so I pre-purchased it digitally 2 or 3 weeks ago. I'll pick VC1 up, too, & probably play through it first before starting VC4.
So people who is getting the physical copy is getting screw, why Sega? Why you hate your real fans who want the real game?
@gcunit Hey, I noticed Mando44646 said the S word. Does your site don't allow profanity? If so, can you edit his comment of the S word? Thanks in advance.
I'm torn. I'd like to wait for a discount to re-buy the original VC. I've already bought it three times (PS3, Steam, and PS4). It's be nice to have a portable copy of the original, but I have played the game to completion multiple times and have a backlog of 142 games. However, I do want the series to continue and want Sega to feel it's worth their while. I'd also love to play an official translation of VC III, although the fan translation was really impressive.
@RushDawg yes
@Alantor28 Thanks for the heads up, I've taken care of it. Words like that automatically get reported anyway, but it doesn't hurt you notifying me, thanks.
@gcunit No problem. I want to have a clean community. So even if those who have valid but negative opinions, this a good site for Nintendo fans by Nintendo fans.
Wow what a great price. Better then other ports which charge more then the originals. Well done. I will double dip.
@Syrek24 I'm broke so of course this is a big deal to me and I'm not getting Valkyria Chronicles 4 digitally either since my hard drive is close to full now.
It has all the DLC. I'm content with this version.
Glad to hear that VC1 will basically be a definitive edition. Really hope we get 2 and 3 sometime later as well. After playing the VC4 demo, I'm kicking myself for somehow missing this series when it came out.
Though that new VC4 info has me weighing just how essential the haffen tank figure + artbook are to me. I'll probably cave regardless, but it gives me something to ponder.
I'll be buying both titles happily. I wish the Japanese release supported English, but like Splatoon 2 and Puyo-Puyo Tetris, it's one of those weird internationally released games where the Japanese version is still slightly different and doesn't support the English mode.
Not a deal killer. I'll just have to settle for digital.
@gcunit Christ, a swear.
