Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct Predictions - What Do You Want To See?

ayto

My guess.... Metroid Prime might end up being officially a Switch game with a shiny "Ready for Switch 2" sticker on the front, and won't get 2 official versions like Breath of the Wild.

Will still sell well with backwards compatibility, I just assume that Nintendo wanted Switch 2 and its exclusives to "take the wheel" (ahem) next week & this is a way to make the distinction between generations as clear as possible.

Mario Galaxy 2 and Yoshi's Woolly World would be fun as well - who knows but hopefully there's a few gems in there.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Dream Pokémon LEGO Set?

ayto

Plenty of scope to do something cool - I am from the OG Pokémon Red/Blue era so I'm probably most excited to see some stuff from that like the below. I guess it all depends if they're gonna basically start again with Lego and/or try to do something different with the sets. I wasn't a big fan of the Super Mario Lego in the end as it's a bit childish. Preferred the more "adult" sets like the SNES and the upcoming Mario Kart & Game Boy one. Didn't really like the Mega Blocks sets as anything brick building that isn't Lego always feels a bit "knock-off" to me (my bias!).

Bigger dioramas of some of the original 151 Pokémon would be great as there are some iconic designs like Mewtwo, Haunter, Onyx, Psyduck, Meowth etc, but I guess they'll go for Charizard, Pikachu etc.

Would also like to see some gyms recreated (especially if they have Brock, Misty and Ash as mini figures!). Otherwise, maybe stuff like SS Anne, a Poké Ball, the professor's house, some Block Headz would be fun too.

Guess it'll depend what market they end up going for....

Re: Video: Let's Talk About Those Switch 2 Rumours, Then

Part of me wants the next generation of Switch to be a Nintendo Switch Online Cloud Gaming platform service so everyone has a meltdown.

But really I just want a backwards compatible 4K Switch with beefed up internals, and NSO to get even better.

Re: The Aya Neo Air Is A $600 Switch Lite-Sized Pocket PC

@Astral-Grain maybe I didn't put what I meant very well. Battery life is the acceptable compromise for people looking for performance in a handheld gaming PC, but it does make them a hard pass for a lot of people who don't want to actively optimise their console just to get 2 hours of play out of it.

I have no issues spending a bit of time getting high end PC games set up (they've gotta suit infinite hardware combos after all!) but it's not really what I want out of a handheld at all. I either want to get playing quickly without much fuss or have something comfortable to hold and play for a decent amount of time without searching for a plug.

Nintendo did the math with the Switch and it even took them a few iterations to get the battery life long enough. Sure, the chip is objectively crap, joycon drift is rubbish and the estore is rubbish, but it says a lot that something derided as a toy seems to have disrupted the PC gaming market a fair bit.

I'm not saying one approach is better or worse, just that going for performance over balance and charging 2x as much as a Switch limits you a bit customer wise.

When I talk about cloud gaming, I mean the general idea of remote hardware / VMs handling the heavy lifting and you basically just control it remotely and see the output. I'd happily use a handheld console (steam deck) that has a great screen and battery and accesses my (permanent) collection remotely. The internet has to get a ***** load faster for that to be feasible to get there but I don't really see that as bleak at all! I agree that if some of the recent ***** (/cash cow) efforts become the future of gaming it'd be bleak.

Re: The Aya Neo Air Is A $600 Switch Lite-Sized Pocket PC

I really don't have the urge to play AAA "home console" / PC games designed for long sessions with a large screen on a small screen device with a super limited battery life. Games with modest specs and great gameplay suit the Switch well, and it means you get a good balance of gameplay and battery life. Some games are for pushing the boundaries of what's possible, but they're always gonna destroy batteries because they're so hungry and not suit a true hybrid console.

There's clearly a high demand for gaming on the go (/on the sofa) and this sort of form factor, but suspect that people will keep trying and failing to get this "Switch but it's actually powerful" stuff to take off before Cloud gaming matures and the concept of owning consoles starts feeling a lot more retro

Re: Random: The World's First 'NFT Console' Has A Very Familiar-Looking Logo

ayto

There's nothing inherently wrong with the actual tech underpinning decentralised / blockchain projects, but the implementation has often been pretty scammy so far and it's gonna be environmentally heavy for a while. It's good for everyone that the gold rush seems to be dying off a little because boring stuff that will actually be useful might start getting a look in. No idea who this console is for really.

Edit:

PS... I'm a web developer that's been making "stuff" on the internet for almost 20 years. I don't own any cryptocurrency or NFTs 😂

Re: Talking Point: As Switch Hardware Sales Slow, How Long Can Nintendo Delay 'Switch 2'?

ayto

I'd like to see this from the next few years of Nintendo:

  • Continued improvement of NSO as it's maturing well, and could take even more advantage of their great catalogue of games
  • A new iteration of Switch that has some solid internal upgrades, supports 4K natively and is backwards compatible, with the ability for Devs to patch games for upscaling / 4K.... aka hardware that can better enable studios to cross release games on Switch without watering them down too much
  • Some innovation with the first party games, a new entry in the DK series and just give us a Wario 3D platformer already

I love the Switch. I've been playing video games for over 20 years now and it's up there with the best consoles for fun and entertainment. I really just hope Nintendo don't release something a huge step away that makes people buy everything again. It seems like something they have no intention of doing at the moment so here's to a shiny Switch+ that satisfies the performance nerds when it lands 🎉

Re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Was The US Number 1 In January

ayto

Switch is my favourite console in a long long time. I've got a Series S. It's an awesome media centre and Game Pass is ace. I play games on Steam on my laptop and that's great for retro / sim / strategy stuff and has loads of deals. Switch just has that magic though. It's been fun watching so many people underestimate the thing. Long may it continue.

Re: Video: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Has Us Excited (And Scared)

ayto

Thought sword and shield was too easy to finish the actual story and had way too many Pokemon to bother trying to catch all the damn things, to the point I couldn't be bothered with the recent remakes (as pretty as they were).

Kept away from everything but the initial trailer on this. I'm just hoping it's got a decent playtime for the story and good gameplay so that I care about finishing the Pokedex really

Re: Pokémon Unite Surpasses 50 Million Downloads, All Players To Receive Free Aeos Tickets

ayto

Unite turned out to be a really accessible MOBA with great animations, no ads and isn't too heavy at all on pay to win (once it got a few updates). I don't mind getting the odd season pass and spending a little bit on in-game currencies with free-to-play like this and Brawl Stars if they're getting regular updates. I reckon my total spend on this is about £15 since launch, and I've played a lot more hours on it than a bunch of Switch games I've spent over double that on. 🤷‍♂️

Re: Pokémon Unite's Mobile Version Gets A Confirmed Release Date, New Pokémon Revealed

ayto

Having played Unite a fair bit - it's fun and I've enjoyed it as I like MOBA stuff. If a game has a game pass model that's fine by me as long as there's new stuff added in regularly, but also appreciate Unite needs to balance the ptw out a bit. Costumes and things like that for money feel a bit predatory across a lot of the games but I think it's a better game than its getting credit for. Blasting people with Charizard and slamming people with Snorlax has been so fun

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Switch OLED, Worth The Upgrade? Team NL Has A Chat

ayto

I have the oldest switch. The battery is moaning at me and the screen is looking scruffy. I love the catalogue and feel like it's worth the investment for me as I play a lot of handheld. Upgrading also means my goddaughter can have a free switch too and I'm super excited as she's just about to hit 11 and it's like gifting a few hundred hours of fun with the games I can "lend" her for a bit.

Totally get it's divisive and I'll be pissed if a 4K switch with a RAM / 256gb+ storage model shows up shortly after but ***** it. The screen looks great.

I hope Nintendo sees the Steam handheld as a huge reason to get N64/GameCube titles on NSO rather than a the super retro arcade approach. They'd have Mario on the currency in Japan in no time with that move

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting A Switch OLED Or Valve Steam Deck?

ayto

I've got a laptop and an Xbox Controller to play steam on. A lot of AAA PC games really won't feel great in this format in my head and the unit size / weight puts me off a bit.

I've preordered the OLED Switch because mine is an original, well used switch that has a bit of a knackered battery / screen now. I get why people wouldn't bother with it though.

Handheld is all about having the right games for the screen format, so if the Steam handheld does that then totally fair enough. I'd probably enjoy older games more than new ones running on a tiny screen that are meant to be on big monitors.
