As had been previously rumoured, Nintendo has now officially reduced the RRP of the base model Switch in Europe. You'll now start to find consoles available for just £259.99 instead of the previous £279.99 asking price in the UK, and for €269.99 instead of €329.99 in other territories.
The console is ready to pick up at its new lower price from the Official My Nintendo UK Store – if you want to jump in early, here are the links you need:

Oooh great price!
OLED one is currently on preorder for £279 via Studentbeans.
£259.99 in Argos
First price cut.
Great. 😀
The Switch will be on fire for the holidays if it can maintain supply. PS5 and Series X will also do well but supply is really short at present.
The first price cut being four years later shows it sold well and demand is still high.
Hope they make it official in NA too, some of us still want the original base model over the OLED one.
£260 instead of £280???
My god Nintendo, calm down!!!
So when is the Lite getting a cut? That should be £150 by now, if not lower.
Man, the price cut difference for the UK compared to the euro is shocking £20 to €60 (like £50). Still, better than nothing I guess…
Actually it went down to €299 here in the Netherlands (from €329) (also in Germany, Spain and Italy which I checked. Only in France it went down to €269)
@SapphireBlaze that's what you lot get for being such playstation fanboys over there. 😉
Oof another reason for the OLED to be a rip off
Steep discount here from Nintendo... 🤣
@UltimateOtaku91,
This might be Nintendo clearing stock, and the OLED will become the regular model.
@BANJO Maybe not for GB but for the rest of Europe I think 60€ less is nice, that's basically a full price game
Massive massive discount from Nintendo. A whopping 20 pounds
Still not sure why Nintendo need to discount the Switch in the first place, sales are still awesome.
@johnvboy
Simply because they're introduced a third, more premium model in the coming month really.
@mariomaster96 Yes, just a small price cut in the UK. Rest of Europe has received a much better reduction. €60 is a good reduction.
I am shocked. Honestly. I really didn't think that it would happen.
@SapphireBlaze import fees. Gotta love brexit!
@johnvboy That was my feeling. Had the new model been more of a Pro style performance upgrade then I could see them selling side by side, but OLED model feels like a replacement to me.
£20 off is better than nothing, I suppose. Glad I used some vouchers and got £50 off a while back though.
Ouch at the Sterling price change compared to the Euro difference.
This is less of a price reduction and more of a price correction. A $300 product in the US really should have never €330/£280 in Europe/UK.
Now we're talking. This may not concern me, but it may well make PS4 numbers every bit as guaranteed for Switch (not "likely", that's what they already were) as the Wii numbers before them. All the moreso if America follows suit.
The OLED is up for preorder on Nintendo UK now as well
https://store.nintendo.co.uk/en_gb/consoles/nintendo-switch-consoles/nintendo-switch-oled-model/
$300 = 254.73 Euros = 216.99 GBP... They're still extremely overpriced compared to the USA. So, I wouldn't expect a price cut for the Americans anytime soon.
@Dustmite72
I don’t think that US Price includes Sales Tax. The U.K. Price includes VAT at 20%, which adds £43.40 to that £216.99.
True, US price doesn't include sales tax, as it's charged at different rates at the state level. Some states are at 0% and the $300 is accurate. Some go as high as 9.5% if they allow cities to tax in addition to the state. I live in a high tax state, 7%, so when I bought my switch, I paid $21 in tax.
@westman98 It's ¥30000 in Japan which is an even bigger disparity. Like around 270 USD.
Welp, guess I was wrong. I might actually pick up a second Switch now.
A mere £9 more than an Xbox Series S!
To be fair, a Series S/Switch combo is a lovely set up to have.
@Dromosus my gaming is on the Series X, but I agree with your sentiment 100%. Whatever the Xbox doesn't play... well, it's usually a Nintendo 1st party game
Still too expensive imo. £150-£199 would feel right to me--and I don't care if you think that's too cheap.
Any word on north american price cut?
@impurekind I think your valuation is a little off, but I don't disagree with you that the UK is paying quite a high rate comparatively.
In ireland it has only been reduced to €299.99 as well. Disappointing.
A slight drop, but that's to be expected for Europe.
They're trying to stimulate sales seemingly. As if 90 plus million wasn't enough.
In Greece I see it went from 349€ to 319€, most of the time we have the most expensive prices on the EU. Disappointing..I thought of buying a 2nd Switch for 269€!
@impurekind here in the USA, the Switch lite is the one that costs $199.99
Never thought I'd see the day...
Is there any real source about a price reduction to €269,- outside of some specific stores? All of the My Nintendo Store websites still seem to give the price of €299,-.
Since Europe has a free market those specific stores are more likely just having special deals, sales or want to get rid of their old stock instead of it being a general price reduction.
Not sure why everyone here is disappointed, when all of you probably already have a Switch lol
I wonder if the price cut will also apply to the Animal Crossing Special Edition Switch console (doubt it) here in the US. It's still available at Best Buy, and I wouldn't mind picking up a 3rd one if the price was cheaper. Either way I can't wait for the Switch OLED, less than a month away 😁.
Nice! Hope thgis comes over here!
@Dustmite72
7% is the median amongst tax rates so is not actually "high."
I guess it would be more appropriate to say:
Switch = 321 usd = 272 euro = 232 pound
Since in Europe tax is already included in price
The difference in price can be attributed to them having higher sales tax than US
Switch pro confirmed! J/k
Wow, Nintendo is always going to be Nintendo. They never discount, they never discount, they raise the price, the offer a new model, the thing sells like hotcakes, and WiiU never discounted even when it was flailing and dying....so.....price cut!
It's like the laws of economics just don't exist on their planet.
Though, that's Europe. Considering what they did with vouchers, the base model will probably go up to $325 in the States to "more clearly show the differences between it and the OLED model"
@sanderev You seem to be on to something regarding that 329-299 Euro wide price drop judging by several other comments. And it does match up better with the UK that way. Maybe @ryancraddock can do some more research and give credit where it's due?
https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2021/9/13/22671208/nintendo-switch-pricing-lowered-europe-uk
@NEStalgia Technically the Wii U was discounted, from $349 to $299 several months after launch when they discontinued the $299 white model w/ 8GB that nobody wanted and bundled it w/ some toys to life games that nobody wanted. But yeah, it always bothered me the Wii U never ever never ever went below $299 while at the exact same time 3DS went from $249 to $169.
Nintendo was probably already working on their hybrid then and knew there home console days were numbered, all about handheld with tv out going forward. Which has turned out all right for them, but my Switch library is miniscule compared to my Wii U. 😝
@NEStalgia Basically if Nintendo would undercut their price they would start losing money with each sale.
Now with the Switch OLED coming soon they have an incentive to reduce the stock of the "original" Switch. That lowers it's price. And yes, that is basic economics. The Wii U never had a revision, so lowering it's price was pointless.
The 3DS wasn't selling as much as Nintendo wanted for their handhelds. And was overpriced when it launched. So, they cut that price as well.
The Switch price cut should've happened when the Lite was released. But I guess that was too close to the 2019 Switch refresh.
@sanderev The existing model was selling incredibly at its existing price and the new model was priced premium above it. There was really no economic reason to cut the price unless they were planning to launch the new model at the old price, which they're not.
Price cuts incentivize sales. They didn't need that right now. And yeah, there's a possible explanation in reducing old inventory if the new model was set to totally replace it, but considering chip shortages and limited supply, there was also no economic reason to reduce the inventory of the old model when it's guaranteed to sell out at full price.
It's just another example of Nintendo never doing what you'd expect, ironically, even when it includes NOT nickel and diming people when you'd think they easily would. They're a total loose cannon.
They didn't need to boost sales, and limited supply means guaranteed sellout at any price. And the premium and old were already price differentiated. It's definitely Nintendo doing a Nintendo.
Those prices are about the equivalent I paid for my Switch via a pre Black Friday deal in late 2019. Not bad at all!
As there's no matching price cut for the Lite, I'm assuming this is a stock clearance exercise, and the OG model will become unavailable sometime early next year. As for the EU getting a bigger price cut than the UK, I'm guessing that demand is still higher for the Switch in the UK than the EU.
So it's still over $50 more in Europe than in America.
If the oled becomes €299 i might reconsider to rebuy.
Sold my switch. if they change the price i might rebuy it and switch oled will become second next to steam deck, really happy i pre ordered the Deck.
So why once again does the UK get shafted with a £20 reduction while Europe gets €50 (£40)?
EuroGamer have quoted Nintendo as saying it’s mostly to do with exchange rates, as well as OLED model
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-09-13-nintendo-cuts-price-of-base-switch-model
@NEStalgia A price cut also lowers the price of second hand hardware. Which actually helps if you want to sell new hardware.
The price reduction is $20 Canadian, seems more like a spit in the face of consumers.
@Specter_of-the_OLED but your name says otherwise!
@Dr-M I'm still getting the OLED model this year but some of my folks are still considering the base model. A majority of them are Metroid and GTA fans so when they heard that games from those franchises are coming to Switch they got excited and wants to get one before those games launch.
@Specter_of-the_OLED However, the people that are looking forward to future games like Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4 or... GTA? and haven't bought the ancient overpriced technology that Switch is would better wait for New Switch. Base Switch and OLED Switch (or Switch OLED?) have the same power.
@sanderev It's what I was going to say. Not everywhere in Europe they cut 60€.
I think i'll order from France. Its not 269.99€ in Greece. Maybe prices will adjust
So when are they gonna drop the price? Still costs the same in Finland. I'm pretty sure I live in Europe.
@johnvboy $349 is too much when compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series (especially the S model). They are dropping the price of both models to compete.
@Crono1973,
It's only too much if the consoles are competing with each other directly, and we are constantly told on here that the Switch is not a console, it's a handheld, well at least in those Switch sales success articles.
@johnvboy Well here's how it works, when competition favors Nintendo (like in sales), then they are competing with Sony and Microsoft. However when competition doesn't favor Nintendo (like in specs) then Nintendo is not competing with Sony and Microsoft. Convenient!
So yeah, Nintendo is competing with Sony and Microsoft and the OLED Switch being $50 more expensive than a much more powerful machine that also has Gamepass may/should worry Nintendo.
@Crono1973,
Very true, competing in some peoples eyes when convenient, but still pretty convinced the Switch is after a different demographic than the Xbox and Playstation.
@johnvboy It's not, the Switch is for people who want to play video games just like the PS4/PS5 and the Xbox One/Series.
@Crono1973,
There is an overlap for sure, but still pretty sure the Switch is reaching the none traditional gamer far more.
