Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

ayto

@WhiteUmbrella I don't work for Nintendo. The reason they have capital is because it's factored into their pricing of the things they sell. Microsoft and Sony frequently sell their consoles at a loss / as low as possible to get people invested in the platforms. They compete with eachother for a totally different type of audience. Nintendo don't have a competitor in the hardware market in the same way, and I think comparing the costs of the consoles as people have is a bit apples and oranges.

When plenty of people have expressed disappointment that the innards are the same and there isn't 4K output, it's hardly irrelevant to the conversation about the OLED Switch. There clearly wasn't a chance that big internal upgrades were happening for a price Nintendo thought was worth risking at this point.

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

$40 of profit per unit on the components, but hardly likely $40 more after everything else. I'm sure all the staffing, assembly, marketing, R&D and tax will leave them barely making anything extra per unit in the grand scheme of things, and I'm surprised they bothered considering how many flaws people are desperate to drag out of the whole idea.

If they'd released a 4K switch with 256GB memory and double the RAM but had to charge $200 extra to make it worth it for them, everyone would be livid. They probably decided they can't win either way but theres more risk in doing the Pro right now, so why not go for the evolution rather than revolution.

Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch OLED

ayto

Preordered the white version. I play a lot of handheld and have the original Switch, on which the battery isn't up to much these days. I want to do some travelling next year and a better battery makes a lot of sense to me. I'm sure if you're basically docked only then fair enough.

For better or worse, perhaps people should get used to consoles as continuous gaming experience platforms with hardware iterations rather than the traditional hard lines between generations. Mid cycle upgrades have been here for ages and streaming games will only become more feasible as time goes on.

4K and beefier Switch on the way? No doubt. During a global chip shortage and you'd have to charge a tonne per unit you can't get to the shelves properly? Not so sure it makes much sense for Nintendo - it's a little bit unexciting but why not do the one thing that a huge portion of your audience will appreciate immediately?

Not sure the majority of Switch owners really care about 4K that much, and are perfectly happy with the performance as is.

Re: Nintendo's Switch OLED Dock Can Be Purchased Separately

Nintendo sells it without cables and everyone moans

If Nintendo sold it with the cables included it'd cost more and everyone would moan

If Nintendo didn't sell it at all everyone would moan

It's just a thing you can buy if you want it and no one is being forced to do that.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Nintendo Switch OLED Model

ayto

Seemed like Game was going to charge my card today for this (haven't preordered with them before for some reason) so decided not to bother due to the postage.

I've got an original switch not one with the bumped battery life, so this is a bigger upgrade for me and I really like the white one. I don't think this will get scalped as much as the PS5/Series X as it's not got the 4K / chip upgrade. Might just go for the official Nintendo store and get some points instead or see what bundles come up.

I've got a feeling the upgraded chip was going to drive the console price up too high and they decided to go with a bump instead.

The future games that really would benefit from faster processing have been so disrupted we might not see them til late 2022 now, so it kinda makes sense. Little bit disappointed that it's exactly the same under the hood but perhaps they can utilise some of the power better and the screen + wired internet will appeal to the handheld / docked crew enough to keep the Switch ticking over for a bit.

Re: Video: Are 2D Games Worth $60? Jon, Alex And Zion Share Their Own Thoughts

New Switch games drop down to £35-£40 retail in the UK around release anyway and I try and avoid the £49.99 price as I personally think that's a bit high for most games (especially something like Mario Golf: Super Rush).

Whether or not something is 2D, 2.5D or 3D doesn't bother me at all. All about the gameplay and entertainment value for me.

Nintendo should be wary of their prices creeping up because they rely on the family market and they could price a fair few people out of investing in the console if they go too much higher.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Football Games

ayto

Mario Strikers on switch would be great. Hopefully that can be a late cycle game on the console.

The FIFA Series on Switch is rubbish. I got the 2019 version for a massive discount and it's just poorly done to be honest. Would tell people to avoid unless they don't really care about glitchy graphics and barely-even-trying commentary repeating over and over.

EA knows they have perfected the format and need to focus on the graphics and online mechanics, and Switch doesn't have the power for the former or any sort of sports gamer market for the latter to really make an effort. They need an install base and they just won't get it for FIFA to justify a massive investment in another platform each year.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Nintendo Direct At E3 2021?

ayto

Genuinely think it's weird people spend so long asking Nintendo to revive stuff, then moan when they do. Advanced Wars getting a revival could genuinely turn into a precursor for Switch Wars, Metroid 4 / BOTW2 still being a way off is fine if they're both awesome when they arrive (unless you want a half finished mess?), Metroid Dread looks awesome, WarioWare coming back is great, Super Monkey Ball collection looks great and THPS looks like it'll be a great mobile player (I've got it on series s). Agree that new Star Fox, new Donkey Kong and some more new original games from their IP would have been cool, but I'm now more in the camp that Nintendo will hold off on Switch Pro for a while and really go in on AAA in 2022 while they ride their big wave of success with some solid new additions and fan favourite remasters in 2021. No ultra blockbusters but at least 3/4 games I'm super excited about so 🤷

Re: Switch Pro Rumours Intensify As New Retailer Listing Appears Online

ayto

If Nintendo bring some of the N64 and GameCube catalogue to Switch Online with a spec bumped console they can take all of my money. I'd certainly spend a fair bit more on Switch Online if it carried more games, sat on something more like the Game Pass service in terms of quality/speed and the switch had proper internal SSD capacity.

Re: Soapbox: The Modern Games Industry Has A Hype Problem, And It Needs To Stop

ayto

Sadly not just the games industry going through this. The constant hype train makes everything harder to enjoy if you buy into it too much, and definitely sets you up for a let down sometimes (films / TV shows definitely have this too). I wasn't too fussed about the Nintendo Direct as it feels like it was missing a killer game, but there was some great stuff to look forward to for this year (Fall Guys, Star Wars, Project Triangle and Knockout City seem fun, and Mario Golf will hopefully exceed exptectations!), and I'm hoping for Zelda announcements as the year progresses....2020 did have Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Sakuna, Hades, All Stars, Hyrule Warriors, Pokémon DLC and loads more in there, and we've already got 3D World, Monster Hunter Rise, Bravely Default 2 and a bunch more on the way for Switch in its "mid cycle" year. IMO it's definitely worth not spoiling games for yourself by getting too invested and knowing everything before it comes along, but maybe that's just me.

Re: Fall Guys Is Coming To Switch This Summer

ayto

This struck me as a really great game for the Switch when it came out. Wouldn't be surprised if this gets a revival because of the huge install base, even if it maybe missed the ideal launch time.
