Re: Talking Point: The Nintendo Switch May Divide Opinion, But It's Made a Splash

arojilla

Weak as a home console and not that portable as a portable console. Worst of both worlds. I won't carry around something with that size and shape like I carry a 3DS so I'll play mostly at home rendering the whole concept useless. Even for those willing to take it away, there's a big chance the gimmickery will wear off pretty quickly on them.

Nintendo will initially sell a few millions to fans, specially thanks to games like the new Zelda and Mario, and then what? This has nothing for the mobile-only casuals (99.9% of the population). Gamers who are not Nintendo fans (the big majority) will simply not bite. Third-parties will run away as it, once again, fails to keep pace in tittles and sales. Yes, this is a Wii U 2.

And yes, I'll get one, just like I got a Wii U even though I firmly believed, and still believe, it was a stupid concept. But I like Nintendo software and can't help it. Problem for Nintendo is, we their fans aren't that many, and shrinking by the day. From a business POV, this is shaping as another failure long term unless there is something more we haven't seen.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think of the Nintendo Switch?

arojilla

The only thing I liked are the games. With that size I'm not going to take it with me anywhere, so I'll use it only at home and the whole concept will render useless. Why they didn't put the tech in that tablet in something like a New 3DS is beyond me. There's room enough (look at the thickness of a high-end smartphone and all they can cram inside, yet they are thinner than the New 3DS's top screen alone). Imagine a New 3DS with a slightly larger top screen (less bezel) and 16:9 ratio. Imagine a charging dock that lets you stream that screen to a TV and use the Pro Controller. Even the detachable controls gimmick could fit. And that's what a true hybrid would have been. This? Meh. If I buy it it will be for the games.

> assuming you were very good at the game - it was notoriously difficult to beat

I fell in love with this game's visuals when I was a kid. Got it and also loved the music, and liked the gameplay. Yet of all the SNES games I owned, this is the one I just couldn't beat. I remember very well the stage I said, f*** it, I'm done, there are other good games. I guess it's time to revisit it.

Re: Nintendo Shares Slump Dramatically as Company Cites "Limited" Financial Impact of Pokémon GO

arojilla

@LeRaposa You have it backwards. Ape formed inside Nintendo and developed Mother and Earthbound (Iwata assisted them while at HAL), then the staff from Ape moved to Creatures. Go ask Reddit or GAF if you don't believe me. Heck, even the Wikipedia lists Creatures as a subsidiary while Game Freak is listed as partner just like other studios that don't exclusively work for Nintendo like Platinum, Level-5, Sega or Atlus (look up "List of Nintendo divisions" there).

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Needs To Sell 2 Million Copies To Make A Profit

arojilla

Well, I'm getting at least 3 copies myself, one to play and 2 to collect (Wii U/NX versions), plus whatever bundle they throw out at me.

@russellohh In this case it's not about how many people owns a console, but how many of the owners are also Zelda fans. I bet a lot of Wii U owners are the right target for a Zelda game, while most Wii owners simply weren't.

Re: Nintendo of America Has a Snazzy New Slogan - "There's No Play Like It"

arojilla

@electrolite77 Then we have different views on what a slogan is or what purpose it serves. Sony got it right, as much as I dislike their PS4 slogan. I agree with @Maxz here.

EDIT: and BTW, the only people talking about it are we Nintendo users, followers and/or fans, and sadly not for the good reasons as you can see. Everyone else just doesn't care.

Re: Rumour: ROM Chip Maker Macronix Drops Hint Nintendo Could Be Abandoning Optical Storage For NX

arojilla

Yes, please carts! I hate optical discs with a passion, you almost have to handle them with gloves and tweezers, and the noise the drive does is really annoying. Considering how fast the price of memories fall (I still remember when I bought my first 16 MB card, yes, megabytes, and later a 512 MB card more expensive than any current 128 GB card) I think it would be a good choice at this point. And handling and collecting carts is way cooler.

If the NX uses discs but has enough storage I'll go digital instead. What would be amazing is if you could buy digital games as NFC collectible cards or even amiibos. Mmm, well, my pocket says no.

Re: Nintendo Download: 14th April (Europe)

arojilla

Oh good, Nintendo Land is on offer, just €25... Gee, that game should have been free from the start, a tech demo of the GamePad's capabilities installed by default in all consoles. Well, now who cares.

Re: Rumour: EA And Nintendo Looking To Rekindle "Unprecedented Partnership" On NX

arojilla

I don't care about sport games, nor most AAA games, but can Nintendo survive off their fans alone? I highly doubt it. There's nothing wrong being niche, there are many niche companies doing well behind the shadows of colossus, but Nintendo has the potential to be big, really big, but they can't do it on their own. They must do whatever it takes to bring and retain other big players by their side. And the NX needs to be a console with no compromises, it has to be THE gaming machine (PC permitting).

Re: Reaction: The Nintendo 'NX', and Why We Think a Unified Platform is the Future

arojilla

3 weeks ago I wrote on this site:

"Now onto the console itself... Turns out it's almost how I imagined my perfect console. A portable, like a 3DS a Vita or otherwise that you can take anywhere or plug it to a dock at home that expands its capabilities and lets you play the same games on a TV with better graphics, performance or additional features. Imagine Smash for 3DS was the only Smash but you could connect the 3DS to the -optional- dock and get at home a version like that for Wii U. One console, one game... an optional dock and two ways to enjoy the same game."

And later:

"It seems they want to merge the two platforms, home and handheld, so they only have to make the same game once, reducing development times and production, distribution and marketing costs. Not a bad idea. Let's say in the future there won't be 2 Smash or 2 Hyrule Warriors games, one for the handheld and one for the home console, just one Smash or one Hyrule Warriors that you will be able to play in either console, with the home console version's output being enhanced thanks to extra power (better resolution or framerate, better models or textures, whatever)."

Re: Fascinating Patent Shows Nintendo Portable Utilising Free-Form Screen Technology

arojilla

Looks interesting, but if a final product doesn't have all physical controls most gamers would expect (2 analog sticks, 1 D-pad, 8 buttons and triggers -analog please!) I'll pass. It's not only games what I like from dedicated consoles, it's controls too. I mean, come on Nintendo, it took you like 7 hardware variations to finally put all those controls into a portable, the New 3DS, but you finally did. Why go backwards now? Still, I'll wait for a final product, I just hope they don't scree this one. It's just a patent after all.

Re: Intriguing Nintendo Patent Points to 'Supplemental Computing Device' and Cloud Resources for a Gaming System

arojilla

Well, it sounds really interesting. Even the way they seem to be designing the cloud computing system (the console using what is available to it at any given moment: it's own power, that of the SCD or that of the cloud network)- And if the system works worldwide, then I'd gladly leave my console turned on while I'm sleeping so others can take advantage. Oh, and they reward you for that! What's not to like?

Re: Parent Trap: Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival Goes Where Other Wii U Games Don't

arojilla

And less than 2 hours ago I posted this -partial- comment in this week's Nintendo Download post: "Amiibo Festival is a maybe, I still just don't know what the game is about after watching a dozen of trailers and previews. But we [me and my daughter] would like to collect those cute cards... Do they have a better use in Happy Home Designer?"

Well, still confused, but less so. At least I get a better sense about what the cards do. Not sure how I feel about the board...

I don't know. Still would like to collect the cards. Maybe they'll have more uses later. Most smartphones come with NFC these days and Animal Crossing, and these cards, could be a good option for mobile.

Oh well, if I ever wanted a demo...

Re: Nintendo Download: 19th November (Europe)

arojilla

NSB2 for my daughter, and Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks for me. Amiibo Festival is a maybe, I still just don't know what the game is about after watching a dozen of trailers and previews. But we would like to collect those cute cards... Do they have a better use in Happy Home Designer?

Re: Rumour: Nintendo and DeNA Will Be Revealing the First Smart Device Software Soon

arojilla

Some Animal Crossing to sell those amiibo cards. I'm not looking after Happy Home Designer nor Amiibo Festival, but I would collect the cards with my daughter if they released some AC game for smartphones. But considering they are currently releasing 2 AC games, I highly doubt it's happening.

So let's see, I think it A) has to be a very well known franchise, B) has to appeal to the casual and mass market and C) has to be simple and slow paced (it's for mobile after all, no physical controls, limited power for most people, quick on the go playing...) so puzzles, turn based games, collecting games, Brain Training type stuff...

In other words, I have no idea.

Re: This Is The Last Real Console Cycle, Proclaims Industry Analyst Michael Pachter

arojilla

It's happening the same with photography. Today in a single year people take more pictures than during the whole film photography era. But this is thanks to smartphones. Traditional cameras are dying. In a few years you will only see dedicated cameras in the hands of pros and serious amateurs and maybe some rich guy trying to get attention with an expensive Leica. I doubt companies like Nikon (heard of them millennials?) will be still selling cameras 10 years from now. It's the time of convergence. Music/MP3 players? Nope, smartphones. Radio? Smartphones. GPS? Smartphones. Video players? Smartphones. Consoles... ? You guess it. It's just a matter of time. Sure, of course, dedicated devices are still produced and they will provably always be. But not for the masses anymore. Heck, they still produce cassettes and vinyls and super 8 cinema film or slide photography film. How many of you use any of those?

In some years all most people will have is a smartphone. Not even tablets or computers. You'll connect your smartphone to a monitor or TV to work or edit files or watch a movie or, yes, play a game.

And I'm ok with this. I want my games to be system and media agnostic.

Re: Reaction: There is a Positive Angle to Nintendo's Splatoon Global Testfire Issues

arojilla

@bizcuthammer You make too much sense... GTFO!

Kidding aside, I only got to play one match and.. that's it. I understand what a stress test is. And unlike the people that say they are cancelling pre-orders because they couldn't play, I'm quite the opposite, now I want the game even more!

BTW, I reached level 15 playing SquidJump, it was fun, and then started the tutorial and covered everything in paint and practiced gyro-aim for nearly two hours. Not a bad night.
