Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

@Kirk "There was a time when it would be laughable to even entertain the notion of a main Star Fox game scoring 72% on average*—but not now, apparently. And, it generally didn't put out too many blatant half-*****, cash-grab spin-offs from most of its core franchises either—especially not as basically the only new games in a whole generation in those franchises. Usually, even the spin-offs were pretty great too (see Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, Tetris Attack, etc.). "

Can't agree more on this... that's basically why my only recent (last 1 year) purchase for WiiU has been Xenoblade...

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

@roboshort "Having a learning curve is bad?? There are too many dumbed down games out there these days. It is nice to have a game that provides a unique control experience and in order to provide a unique experience you need a learning curve."

A learning curve on though games is welcomed among many gamers. The latest success of From Software games prove that. Many of us got bored about the easy "take my hand" trend of recent games.

But a learning curve is typically requested, and well accepted in two distinct cases:

1) The game is very hard in its mechanics, so controls have to be very responsive and the player needs to have a reaction time of fraction of seconds, learn enemy movements and attacks, use all the weapons/skills/objects at his disposal to overcome foes, learn to interact with allies in a perfect synchronous way (i.e. Soulslike, SuperMeat Boy, Bitrip Runner, Helldivers).

2) The game itself is a realistic simulation of something that exist or is supposed to exist. Then "basic intuitive" controls are not best suited to give you the same feeling of the real thing (i.e. Assetto Corsa, any Flight Simulator, Elite Dangerous), hence the control learning curve...

These are also the main reason why such titles have barriers at start and they are not tailored for everyone.

Now, Star Fox Zero is introducing a learning curve in its controls that, according to many opinions on Web, is unnecessary, since previous iterations nailed such controls perfectly, while the game does not seem very hard in itself or so complicate to required it. Is a on rail shooter after all. It seems an overcomplicated gamepad showcase, a launch title that was released 4 years later.....

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

arnoldlayne83

@MadAussieBloke Ratchet and Clank is more a Nintendo game than any later Nintendo games....
I' ll pick that up once my masochistic addiction to DS III will blow away (or literally blow me away...)

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

arnoldlayne83

The review doesn't sound like an 8 in all honesty, and the controls and longevity seem to be issues among most reviews...

Personally I find the absence of PvP and PvE even more irritating, we are in 2016 and past Star Fox games had them...

Lately Nintendo seems to have lost its "magic".... Very few gems between mediocre titles

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Planning A Series Of Wii U Remasters For NX

arnoldlayne83

@Slim1999 Generally on PS4 (I own that, I can't say about XBOX1) remasters have been mainly "definitive editions" or "collections".

There are very few remasters (if not any) with just the vanilla game and nothing else.....
PS4 library is now absolutely packed with original titles, with pretty high standards, both in AAA and indies. The store is huge and pretty complicate to navigate. The only remaster I would pray for is Demon Souls actually...

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Planning A Series Of Wii U Remasters For NX

arnoldlayne83

Also, if the best WiiU games did not help to sell many consoles, what's the point to remake them now? Why should I buy NX for Smashbro, if I did not care about it on WiiU? It looks like just a way to piss WiiU owners.... NX needs TONS of NEW NINTENDO games and BEST AAA multiplats, not only at launch, but in the following years too

Re: Super Mario Maker and Splatoon Miss Out at BAFTA Game Awards

arnoldlayne83

Here is the full list:

Artistic Achievement - Ori and the Blind Forest
Audio Achievement - Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
Best Game - Fallout 4
British Game - Batman: Arkham Knight
Debut Game - Her Story
Family - Rocket League
Game Design - Bloodborne
Game Innovation - Her Story
Mobile & Handheld - Her Story
Multiplayer - Rocket League
Music - Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
Original Property - Until Dawn

While I agree with Ori, Bloodborne (still my GOTY 2015) and Rocket League (superb massively-funny online game), I am a bit "LOL" on Her Story, I did not try it but well.... I suppose is because the game designer is british too....

Re: Soapbox: No, Star Fox Zero's Controls Are not Bad or Broken

arnoldlayne83

While I can't say anything about the controls themselves (have to try them first), I would prefer not to sacrify local PvE PvP for the sake of "being different".

In other terms I do not think this dual screen setup adds too much to gameplay, while local coop/versus would have been way better.

I do not say anything about online multi... But it is sad that in 2016 this features is missing in SF game

Re: Nikkei Report Suggests That Wii U Production Will End in 2016

arnoldlayne83

I enjoyed my WiiU on all its lifespan, it gave me some amazing titles I loved like TW101, Bayonetta 1 and 2, Hyrule Warriors, XCX, Mario Kart, rayman Legends.... but at the same time I got bored of the "usual" Nintendo games, I can't stand anymore another Mario platformer, another "too light for my taste" rpg like Zelda and so on, and the costant software draught pushed me to buy a Ps4, which I adore for the variety of experiences it is giving to me. So, I would call WiiU a bittersweet console for me and will probably be my last Nintendo console for a while....

By the way, stopping the production of a failing console is a good thing, one of the few right decision Nintendo took lately.

Re: Twilight Princess HD Loses Out to The Division on Japanese Launch

arnoldlayne83

Glad that the Division was positively welcomed in japan too. It is a extremely well crafted TPS/RPG and the best Ubisoft game in ages. I believe all the criticism Ubisoft got for WD and AC Unity helped to bake a great come back.

I do not believe there is a WiiU shortage, they simply stopped or slowed down the production, due by poor sales.

I did not expect more sales froma ten years old remastered with not big extras in it, honestly, despite the chronical lack of software for wiiU

Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo Direct Summary - 3rd March

arnoldlayne83

@fortius54 I believe so. Some of the leaks had also lot of sense, like NX being architecturally close to ps4 and xbox, for porting simplicity.
And also sounds natural that Nintendo is trying to win back third parties, they cannot survive without them, no way to expand the user base by running alone.

Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo Direct Summary - 3rd March

arnoldlayne83

I was pleased to see that Star Fox is graphically improved (slightly), but the lack of decent (online) multiplayer is bothering me. Paper Mario was a letdown, since i personally disliked Sticker Star, lets see when we will know something more about the game.

I am worried by the lack of news about Zelda U, probably the last WiiU game I am interested in.... it is more and more looking like will be a cross release between WiiU and NX, if not only NX release.

My expectations were low, so the Direct was enjoyable, but I still see no playing time on my WiiU in near future, apart Xenoblade and Hyrule Warriors (which I love)

Re: Paper Mario Colour Splash Coming to Wii U

arnoldlayne83

Meh.... I Have Sticker Star on 3ds and got bored to death after the first world... Despite the artwork that is great this looks like a clone of that awful game....

Apart Xenoblade my wiiU is a dust collector since one year now...

Re: Ubisoft Discounts Galore in 2-Week North American eShop Sale

arnoldlayne83

Rayman Legends is the best platformer on WiiU hands down, and the best implementation of gamepad together with zombie U. Tons of replayability with the insanely difficult timed stages. Everyone should own that game on the platform.

BLack Flag is the best AC ever made! You are a pirate and you sail your ship, what you want more?

Re: Preview: Hyrule Warriors Legends Takes The Battle On The Road

arnoldlayne83

Great game with great mechanics! I loved it on wiiU and I should advise you all to play it on WiiU instead of 3ds, if you have the choice. But if you only have a 3ds, don t miss it! I am curious to see how it really runs on old 3ds....

For WiiU owners, if you enjoyed it, you can also grab warriors Orochi 3 on wiiU. Same gameplay and ton of contents

Re: Editorial: Triple-A Third Party Games Will Need Creativity as Well as Marketing for NX Success

arnoldlayne83

@smashbrolink the point is not how difficult was to port to WiiU, it is how many resources it took, compared to the install base and the reception level of such base.

It is true that the architecture was different and the gamepad introduced another level of complexity, matched with the fact that wiiU was only slightly superior in power to 360/Ps3....

Once EA, Ubisoft and other devs saw that sale numbers weren't on WiiU, they left the sinking ship. 3rd party games did not sell, despite being good or bad ports. I had tons of fun playing black flag (a great and in its way innovative take on AC formula) on wiiU. It was running fine, it sold 300k on WiiU compare to 4 millions on ps3. And it was released at the same time then the other versions.
Other ports like NFS Most wanted, Deus EX and Tekken tag 2 also bombed, despite WiiU's being the definitive edition....

Re: Editorial: Triple-A Third Party Games Will Need Creativity as Well as Marketing for NX Success

arnoldlayne83

EA does not have to sell FIFA or NHL to Nintendo hardcore fans. It is pretty clear that (the most of) Nintendo hardcores do not care about "AAA" titles. Despite what many here likes to say, they do no even care about innovation and creativity, since they missed (not entirely their fault, mainly Nintendo) almost the last 10 years of video-game industry's progress (about graphics, mechanics, genre, game-play, online features). Despite keep asking for something new, top sales on Nintendo consoles are always achieved by the most "vintage" franchises. Take the Wii, were NSMBWii outsold a true innovative gem as Super MArio galaxy 29 millions vs. 11.5.... On WiiU, despite all the love, games such Bayonetta, TW101, ZombieU (the only game that really showed us how great was the gamepad) had not so enthusiastic sales numbers.

I say this not to generate flames or criticize personal tastes, but to steer the discussion towards a different point of view: EA does not have to sell FIFA, NHL or NBA to Nintendo fan. It won't success in this, Nintendo audience do not care, like they do not care about other AAA titles. It is Nintendo that has to show (with the help of third parties) to non-Nintendo gamers that NX will be a console well worth their money. Nintendo has to modernize and introduce new franchise too for them. A good step has been done with splatoon. Another one could be made by giving us a "21th century" Metroid Prime with fps/rpg mechanics, a truly open-world Zelda, some new IP that will introduce to Nintendo fans the great possibilities that relies in massive online games. This will help Nintendo hardcore fans to "open their eyes" on different genres that now they despised, closing the gap to the rest of the gaming world. On the other hand, by having on their side big AAA producers, they will also attract other gamers to Nintendo franchises, allowing them to play their favourite AAA games together with Zelda, Marion and company.

As I said in another post, with NX Nintendo definitely has to choose what it wanna be: a "vintage" glorious company catering mainly to nostalgic Nintendo fans and keep selling 10 - 20 million(being optimistic) consoles per generation or "invade" the modern gaming world with old fashion IP, brand new modern one and lot of 3rd parties, catering to everyone who really love video-games, aiming to compete with Sony (I belive MS will leave console market soon, or they will reduce xbox to a kind of steam machine)
