Hyrule Warriors Legends is a technical marvel, there's no denying that. To get such a complex and character-heavy game to run on such simple hardware is an incredible feat, but it's not as plain sailing on the original 3DS as it is on the New 3DS.
Check out the comparison video below where you can see the performance of this new portable title compared to its bigger & older Wii U counterpart. It's not a smooth experience by any means, but it is at least playable.

this is exactly the type of video i was hoping to see before i buy the game for my old 3ds xl. thanks!
"Hyrule Warriors Legends is a technical marvel, there's no denying that."
Uhm.....okay? I don't see how it's a technical marvel, but if you're that easily impressed then that's just SWELL.
@Dakt is cute.
@AVahne I know, I thought the other Warrior games on the 3ds look better than this one... and they still look like crap.
this video makes the game look not nearly as bad as i expected. im now sold on giving it a try on my old 3ds.
@JHDK Yeah doesn't look that bad, sure it's missing a number of enemies and the frame rate is way down, but it still looks like portable fun.
Legends seems more... informative then Wii U. The bomb notification above the Lizalfos, and the "Side Mission Started" prompt, letting you know it's OK to not bow to every demand your allies ask of you.
I'm getting Legends, but I wouldn't mind if the Wii U version was, at some point, patched to achieve parity.
I didn't realize the New 3DS was that much more powerful. I'm glad I have a New 3DS.
With that in mind I'm still not getting it. It is so much better on Wii U.
I especially love playing co-op on Wii U
I've got the Wii u version but I never got round to playing it and now I've got the 3ds version pre-ordered which seems like the definitive version everything apart from graphics wise! Does anyone know if I can transfer the Wii u dlc from the 3ds version to the Wii u one I don't really want to have to buy it again!
This game on the 3DS seriously makes me cringe. I don't get how anyone who has played it on a Wii U would want this.
I don't understand why this wasn't New 3DS only.
@japongt
Because it's portable. Simple as that. I own on Wii U, but now I can play at work (on break of course). It's a 3DS game, so of course it's going to look like a 3DS game.
I don't understand why many people are complaining of the decision to port the game to the 3DS. As @JaxonH said, portable version of a home console game gives ability to play outside the home. If the game were truly terrible, then I think criticisms would be valid, but as it stands, many reviewers haven't had a problem and the game works, even if it's not on the same scale or as crisp in graphics
Still not really sure why this needed to exist.
@Warruz Probably because there are about 40 million old 3DS and 10 million New 3DS, if that many. Maybe if it was a Nintendo game they would have held it to a higher standard, but since it isn't, they are making money where they can.
I've played the demo on New 3DS, it was alright, but did you guys notice the enemies popping into view? Like right in front of you. Didn't notice that on the Wii U...
Is there a video comparing it to the n3ds?
@InternetBowser I actually found the Demo of the 3DS game to run really smooth. And it's easily my fav game on WiiU, so ill probably buy this for 3DS aswell, i'm more excited for the DLC for WiiU though. I just want more Ganondorf.
It's a 3DS! What do people expect? The Wii U is a Full HD 60fps home games console...
I for one think the game runs extremely well on the New 3DS at least and it is one of the better action packed games on the 3DS.
@Meowpheel Nope, it's a comparison to the old 3DS.
Oh man... that I had people telling me the 3DS version wasn't that bad... BAH ha ha ha!
Kinda wish they had done a direct comparison of the original 3DS to the N3DS. It seems a little asinine to compare to the obviously higher quality Wii U version. I want the game so I can play it on the go, and I don't have a N3DS so that comparison would have been more useful to me.
As for what I can see from the video, it looks just fine. I don't see the frame drops and such that always get referenced but I never really notice dropped frames until I am playing it for myself.
Hopefully NA will get a demo soon so I can decide for myself before I buy, otherwise I'll just have to suck it up and try to get the Wii U DLC some other way.
@ShikabaneHime13 People aren't really upset at the existence of the 3DS version, but rather that KT is forcing people into playing said version in order to access all the new content (the story and levels accompanying the new characters). It changes the discussion from "live and let live" to "I can't tolerate this."
I also don't really see much of an unplayable mess as many make it sound like. It looks fine, a bit slow at times, but mostly ok. I have the n3DS, so I don't really care anyway.
@Iggly yeah I know that, I just meant that I'd like to see the game running on the 3DS and n3DS.
@InternetBowser Doh, sorry im playing on a New 3DS, and it's smoother than the WiiU version from what i could tell, and i didn't notice any popin enemies. Sad to hear it runs "crappy" on the older 3dses.
Honestly, my complaint for the demo was that it could have had 3DS exclusive stuff for the demo, not the lame ass intro level from the WiiU game. If they really want WiiU players to get this, how about doing a demo that we haven't played?
I simply don't understand the appeal of the Dynasty Warriors brand of gameplay. Obviously it isn't for me but I can't wrap my head around how beating up endless hordes of brain-dead cannon fodder translates into "fun." But when the port was announced for New 3DS, I told myself I'd keep up with previews, gameplay footage, and eventually reviews to see if I might give the genre a chance. And seeing as I'm chiefly a handheld gamer (and less a console one), what was there to lose? While the Wii U version is the obvious winner in terms of visuals, it looks the same kind of boring to me. It simply doesn't appeal to me. Now, if the enemies were attacking you and there was a real threat of being overpowered by the AI, thaaaaaat's a different story. I'll be skipping this and eagerly awaiting Bravely Second in April (which gives me enough time to finish Birthright). Cheers to those who enjoy the game, though: no one can deny it's awesome visuals!
I hope the people argue that Nintendo needs to replace the Wii U but not the 3DS watch this. Case and point for the argument that the 3DS is starting to show its age.
@Dakt I feel you on this. I had the exact same problem with Majoras Mask. I can't play action games on the 3DS because the circle pad is just terrible. It's the reason I'm playing MH clones on the vita instead of MH itself on the 3DS
Doesn't look impressive at all. This really makes me wish that next handheld generation is coming soon. 3DS is already a really old system...
Urgh.... framerate and visuals are pretty horrible on 3ds....
sadly I think I'll pass, since I am not willing to upgrade to N3ds
Reminds me of how much fun Hyrule Warriors is on Wii U. I have all the DLC for it too and I haven't played it for ages.
Just me maybe, but it looks more pixelated on the old 3ds, or it could just be from the video itself.
@InternetBowser Hmmm... So in your opinion, what level of challenge is Hyrule Warriors Legends overall? I'm not looking for a portable Dark Souls. But all the gameplay footage I've seen suggests the game is a cakewalk and the enemies pose little to no challenge whatsoever. Are there different levels of difficulty if a player wanted to up the challenge factor? Thanks for the reply.
It's definitely not a mess or unplayble like many people made it out to be.
@InternetBowser Actually, your comment helps A LOT - so much so that I'm going to go ahead and preorder it today so I can start on it Friday when it releases. I've been going back 'n forth... I'm not a Zelda super-fan but I do enjoy the series and I thought this looked like a lot of fun but couldn't get over what seemed to be dull gameplay. Glad I actually asked someone what they thought because, again, the gameplay footage totally presents something else. Thanks again, mate!
@Fath Ok, I'll definitely give ya that
@Meowpheel I think Gamexplain had a gameplay comparison of the two systems, if not there should at least be one on Youtube by someone. It's a bit easier to notice the difference there but it's still playable.
Well looks far better and run's better on new 3DS. They should kept as a exclusive for that.
Anyhow I really liked demo and Defo gonna pick it up on Friday!
I sincerely hope that it looks better on the New 3DS. I'm by no means a videophile, but that looks downright awful. Those textures look like a DS game, and I know that it's hard to get an impressive level of graphical fidelity when you've got such a processor intensive game, but....geeze. It truly does look abysmal.
@Dakt Just got this thing (the grip) recently. It's superb. Maker is CyberGadget from Japan.

@ElkinFencer10
It's more or less the same. Maybe some more motion blur from super attacks and EVER SO SLIGHTLY better textures, but the main thing about playing on the New 3DS is that you get a playable framerate (in 2D....3D is nearly okay-ish but there's really no point to it).
The 3DS version looks like trash. it was running so slow, the Wii U version was several seconds ahead, even though they started at the same time. And the 3DS couldn't even render all the enemies, and when it did, they were like 15 pixels each. Why couldn't they have just made it N3DS exclusive? It follows all the other N3DS exclusives in that it's a low-risk port (Binding of Isaac, Xenoblade 3D), and only can run in 3D on the New 3DS. I really wish Nintendo would show some more love to the people who scooped up their expensive new handheld. I love mine, don't get me wrong, but some more exclusive titles would be a great sign of appreciation from Nintendo.
