As we're in the middle of another week we have the Media Create Japanese charts to consider, and this time around there's a new release on 3DS that's stealing the headlines.
It's Square Enix's 3DS RPG Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3, the latest entry in the spin-off series, that's stormed to the top of the charts with impressive numbers; its predecessor on DS did come to the West over a year after its Japanese release, so there's some hope for gamers outside of Japan. Nintendo's interest in the top 20 is limited beyond that, with Assassination Classroom: Assassin Training Plan making its debut for 3DS in 8th place, while Pokkén Tournament falls back to fifth place in its second week. Results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 (Square Enix, 03/24/16) – 368,665 (New)
- [PS4] Dark Souls III (Bandai Namco, 03/24/16) – 210,141 (New)
- [PSV] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X (Sega, 03/24/16) – 69,438 (New)

- [PSV] Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Venus (Koei Tecmo, 03/24/16) – 21,959 (New)
- [PS4] Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence Sengoku Risshiden (Koei Tecmo, 03/24/16) – 20,322 (New)

- [PSV] Digimon World: Next Order (Bandai Namco, 03/17/16) – 10,272 (74,490)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 8,980 (1,310,480)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Happy Price Selection) (Nintendo, 03/17/16) – 7,806 (14,737)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 7,047 (829,358)
- [PSV] Dance with Devils (Rejet, 03/24/16) – 5,129 (New)

- [PSV] Gundam Breaker 3 (Bandai Namco, 03/03/16) – 4,908 (105,708)
In terms of hardware there are increases across the 3DS family, with New 3DS LL (XL) climbing to second place. The Wii U see its sales plummet after an improved previous week, however; results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 34,377 (28,370)
- New 3DS LL – 22,639 (18,353)
- PlayStation Vita – 20,068 (19,028)
- New 3DS – 5,773 (5,142)
- Wii U – 4,545 (12,998)
- 3DS – 2,322 (2,187)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,290 (1,462)
- 3DS LL – 365 (370)
- Xbox One – 55 (91)
This week brings further proof of the enduring appeal of the Dragon Quest brand, which will hopefully encourage further localisation beyond the already confirmed 2016 releases of VI and VII in the West.

Somebody help me out, is Splatoon the highest grossing Wii U game in Japan or does it still have a ways to go?
So close(in 3ds sales)
I believe you meant VII and VIII in your last sentence.
Is the WiiU still rare in Japan or is this not the problem?
So much Koei Tecmo in the list
I think they'd be pretty obtuse to not localize to the west. Just look at some other high profile JRPG like Fire Emblem.
Plus, I need this game, come oooon Square Enix!
I am surprised to see Mario & Sonic still around after almost a month and half.
Unless some further problems emerged, the Wii U sales are probably due to lack of interest rather than production issues, which is surprising considering that Pokken still sells well. I hope there will be some interest for Star Fox Zero and maybe the new Paper Mario, but I fear that this situation won't change during the year that much, with Zelda being a giant unknown factor.
Those Xbox One sales made me laugh out loud, oh my gosh!
Thank god the 3ds line is picking up the slack. Those wii u numbers are so unacceptable.
@Spoony_Tech I believe it has passed Mario Kart 8, but I'm not sure about Super Mario Bros. U. If it currently isn't, then it'll be the selling Wii U game in Japan by the end of the year.
@Chandlero Last week's bump was probably due to influx of Pokkén bundles.
Yet another great looking Dragon Quest Monsters game we wont get outside of Japan :/
@Chandlero how can it be sonce last week sold 200% more?
There were no issues, only lack of interest
I am happy for overall Splatoon sales, despite I am not interested in the game itself (no chat no party). Maybe Nintendo will understand that they should push on new IPs instead of milking always the old ones...
@arnoldlayne83 There WAS a lack of consoles as you can see here:
http://wiiudaily.com/2016/03/the-wii-u-is-sold-out-all-over-japan-and-nintendo-isnt-talking/
That's mad! I just bought DQ joker 1&2 second hand there and I come here and see there is a 3rd one too! Hopefully it will get a western release too.
Bought them on whim as I know nothing about them and they were cheap, nice to add to the collection. Anyone here played bought of them at all? They sound interesting.
When are the main line DQ games coming to the 3ds? Anyone know yet?
Where's that review for the Rio Olympic games?
Want dqj3. Though I did struggle with the second game...
That debut is not impressive at all, it's a collapse. DQMJ and DQMJ2 sold around 700,000 copies in their first weeks on DS, and went on to sell over 1,500,000 copies both. DQMJ3 will be a far cry from those DS successes.
And speaking of collapse, look, Twilight Princess HD is out of the top 20 completely. Nobody wanted that downgraded port!
I get that the "Happy Price Selection" has a different sleeve and is cheaper, but its still the same game, can't we have actual totals for those games, maybe in a sub bracket, just for context.
@TruenoGT today, here in CH, at a local big retailer I've seen WiiU being sold only 20 euros cheaper than entry level PS4.... It is just ridicolous. It looks like Nintendo doesn't even care anymore about getting rid of production leftovers...
I really hope this comes to the US. I enjoyed 1 & 2 more than the DS Pokemon games. My guess is it depends on whether FF Explorers and more importantly Dragon Quest sell well here.
@Mahe In what way was the remaster a downgrade?
It's DQ VII and VIII, not VI.
How long until Xbox One hits zero?
@Mahe How was it down graded? This negativity is why I don't comment much in these comment sections.
@arnoldlayne83 Why would they want to lose money by lowering the price.I thought that retailers in the Uk lowered the prices there.
@Chandlero yeah but something doesn't seem right here. Like come on, when the PS4 was released, it was sold out everywhere but yet still making 20-30k a week.
Yep, something is NOT right. You don't "run out" of a poorly selling console in ONE market.
It's not like the Wii U ever sold like hot cakes in the first place.
If Nintendo can keep a more than ample supply in the west it should be able to do the same in Japan. That's how GOOD business logistics works.
To me this is deliberate and only means one thing.
Are the other Dragon Quest games good? I have heard about but never seen it in physical form...
...I miss Japan and their humour!
