@Quorthon completely agree on what u said in ur last posts...
Nintendo has the luck/misfortune to have grown, year after year, its own user market. Users who cares mainly about mario, zelda and whatsoever games related to them (see the sales number of the 20th 2d platform like nsmbu or compare normal musou sales on platform with hyrule warriors). User base that like to complain about lack of novelty in gaming market and the refuse to buy gems like xenoblade, wonderful 101 and bayonetta... at the moment, only hardcore nintendo fans stand with the company (u can see it also from the tone of certain posts here). Everyone else is long gone, and i don t really see how they could win them back...
As a Fan of the warriors series I would strongly recommend the Dynasty Warriors Extreme Legends Edition and Samurai Warriors 4 on current gen consoles.... If you liked the mechanics of Hyrule, the latter releases are great fun
@JakeOfAllTrades by seeing selling numbers it seems the firsts that missed an amazing game like bayo2 have been the wiiu owners themselves...
the wiiU has no third party games to attract nonNintendo fans and a lot of Nintendo fans that don t give a damn about great nonNintendo games (see zombieU, W101, Bayonetta2) on the console
Ps: speaking of art style, i can assure you, it is full of amazing crafted games outside Nintendo too.... and little big planet is an example of it (speaking of wooly/textile world)....
@garthvader the lack of football game hurts them in europe.... why don t outsurce another mario striker? The wii one was amazing... i would buy it day 1
@Quorthon Max solidarity to you.... you are trying to bring some common sense and an interesting point of view in a land dominated by blind fanboysm.... as the evolution of the discussion clearly shows....
@kensredemption I disagree.... Owning also a Ps4 I can say that it's first party games I tried: Infamous Second Son, Killzone, Driveclub all run supersmooth and their graphic is an excellent showcase for the console power.
@WaveWarlock Agree. Pikmin is brilliant, and It totally deserved better sales than it achieved. Is an amazing title and a perfect showcase for the console potential
@DiscoGentleman I tried it and it s ok, but nothing so "wow". Still, if I want to play a card game, I get my card and some friend and play. But I see your point now
still not hyped at all about this... I believe in 2014 and editor should be present in every Mario 2D games, just to add something to the overall experience....
pretty happy with the Nintendo results and the overall performance. Glad Dragon Age won the best game, it totally deserve it for the amount of content they stuffed into a disc.
The only "meh" moment was for the portable award... SSB deserved it, not a magic the gathering clone...
@Darknyht but doing so they already lost all the battles since nintendo 64, wii excluded... still, keeping the pace, they could beat at least one of the competition... they have now the same number of console ad xbox1, so this generation they could have crushed microsoft if only they got a more decent hardware. As long they alienate third parties support, they will never be anything more than a sparring partner.
@Darknyht "What I am saying is that a Wii U is not the same as an Xbox One or PS4, just like the Wii was not like the Xbox 360 or PS3. Nintendo stopped competing with MIcrosoft and Sony directly last cycle because there is no need for three identical consoles on the market."
So then Nintendo deliberately decided to release only secondary consoles by doing so (for everyone except fundamentalist Nintendo fans, of course). Still I don't get why they couldn't keep the pace with Xb1 and Ps4 having the plus of their amazing exclusives.... to me, it is still an idiotic decision
@JaxonH "But it does seem only big name Nintendo games ever have hopes of reaching a million copies sold."
It is exactly this... despite Nintendo fans calling for novelty and innovation (and saying there is nothing new on ps4 and xbox1), New super mario Bros U (with its 30 years old gameplay) sold 4.32 millions copies and is the top seller on WiiU. The first five top seller positions got Mario Involved, then Zelda, then pikmin (8th with 830k). First non-Nintendo game is ZombieU at 11th (730k). Rayman legend, a wonderful 2D platform (so to speak the favourite gender for Nintendo Audience), got 17th with 400k (sold more on Ps3, and hey, it utilize the gamepad at its best...). Two praised gems like Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2? The latter is 20th (360k), while the superheroes wonder is 27th (260k).... My opinion? as you said, nothing without Mario or Link on it as any chance to sell and appeal Nintendo users (large part of them). Another prove? Hyrule Warrior, a musou dressed like zelda game, is 11th with 560k copies. A pretty decent (for me amazing) next musou on the same platform: Warriors Orochi? 63th with 70k copies sold.....
@GreatPlayer I believe the motivation was, as you said, that this CPU is a successor of the one used on Wii, and this would allow easily retrocompatibility.
Don't know what will be the next step, with Nintendo you'll never known, they can be able either of great ideas or stupid choices.... for sure, if they wanna have some chance of holding the multiplats, they'll have to move towards x86 multicore architecture.... with HW specs close to Sony and Microsoft....
@GreatPlayer you got a PowerPC vs x86 architectures -> different set of instructions in the code. You got huge differences in hardware specs -> different performances. While porting between Xb1 and Ps4 is immediate and merely a matter of rescaling fps and resolutions (sometimes), porting to WiiU requires extra development time (coding and downgrading/optimize the graphics) -> higher developing costs.
Then consider that: a) WiiU is not such a popular console (has an install base close to xb1, but as I told you, the latter allows easy ports from pc or ps4); b) Nintendo fanbase is generally picky about 3rd parties games and they generally sell bad (ZombieU is the best seller with 700k copies....), then you realise that not so many developers are prone to do such ports.... it is capitalism, nothing to do with conspiracy theory or evil corporations.... surely you can blame them to be lazy, but on a commercial point of view, they have their own rights, and Nintendo has to be blamed for this.... the market nowadays is ruled by 3/4 big devs (EA, Ubisoft, Activision...) and Nintendo deliberately choose not to be "friendly" towards them, starting by choosing such "complex" hardware (not to mention the extra "headache" given by the second screen....)
@liveswired Ubisoft must hate wiiu owner so much that they give us at least 4 great games (ZombieU, Ac4, child of light and rayman legends), and they all had abysimal selling numbers. Moreover is the only and last western developer making some port.... yeah, they are very bad, so evil.... lets meet on a public square and set their games on fire....
Another point I completely disagree with Nintendo Philosophy is this insistence on the "Videogames must be like toy, funny, colourful and entertaining".
Even if this is true, we mostly play for that reason, this "believe" was perfect in the 80'-90', where the target audience were mainly kids and teenagers and the technological level wasn't good enough to allow designers to creat credible, complex and somehow "realistic" (to the 5 senses) environments.
Nowaday I find this idea of videogames too simplistic. I consider Videogame as the newest form of Visual (and not only) art, as cinema was in the last century. Nowadays the level of attention to detail, deepness in the plot and amount of work dedicated to certain videogames reaches and sometimes overcomes movies and other forms of media. So then, sometimes making and playing a videogame can be also a way to explore deeper thoughts, feelings, emotions. How ethical are we in our choices? How we could react under certain situations? What are the results of our acts?
Citing a review about a very recent videogame:
"...[the game] does not draw subtle parallels between the Chantry and modern-day Christianity. Its references are obvious and sometimes heavy-handed, but clear allegory aside, this vast and engrossing role-playing game effectively explores matters of faith and devotion on an intimate level, surrounding you with a multitude of people, each of whom navigates evolving religious turmoil in his or her own way. "
To me, gamer in my thirties, is a very appealing plot, cos it happened I ask myself certain question, and I am glad someone else want to give me his idea or make me experiment with mine.
This is a huge aspect that Shigeru & co. are completely ignoring labelling the "others" as banal shooters makers. It is a bit like saying tha the only movies worth watching are the Pixar one, cos they are funny and entertaining... No, sorry, sometimes I find entertaining a visual punch in my stomach like Hotel Ruanda (and the book too)
Sorry for the wall of text, I hope I was able to make you understand my opinion, hoping someone would like to share his thoughts
meh, "What the other companies are doing makes business sense. But it’s boring.".... this is a very trivial and formulaic sentence to be honest. While it's true companies are milking a lot on estabilished franchises (AC, COD, FIFA etc) this is also very true on Nintendo (NSMBx with x->ds, 3ds, Wii, WiiU).
And just putting an iron curtain on the rest of videogame industry is pure fanboysm which doesn't allow them (and their hardcore fan audience) to experience and learn from new ideas coming out.... It's full of amazing and innovative games out there.... take Skyrim, which revolutionized the rpg, take Borderlands, see the concept behind a game like Tomorrow Children or the feature of a No Man's Sky, or the AI of an Alien Isolation or Shadow of Mordor.....
Because if it's true that Nintendo brings fun and enjoyment to the audience, personally is also true that there are other kind of fun and/or enjoyiment provided by videogames... I mean following a breathtaking story a-la Last of Us, or being hide in the shadow ready to escape in a game a-la Thief, or the intense and tactical fight strugglin for survive in Dark Souls....
@electrolite77 I agree with you. And that's what Nintendo should focus on the future.... ok keep going with its well known estabilished franchises, but it's time to cover all the gaps they have: fps, sports, gdr (western/easter) and so on... Doing this in-house or hiring studios is not important, but if they won't do that, they indirectly agree with the fact that their consoles are the complementary/secondary ones....
@Darknyht #195
Still, if in 2006 I spent 300$ in a console, I am still playing new games with it. If I have spent the double on a pc, the latter probably doesn't physically exist anymore....
@gage_wolf
Which is, imho, the same attitude some people here have towards games from other consoles.... "is not coming to my suppaduppa Nintendo console, so it must be crap".
@ToxieDogg Honestly There are also people (me included) that enjoy both Nintendo games and other franchises, and they would be more than happy to see all their favourite games on one console (pretty much for money saving reasons). But here I often read comments like "Nintendo is the best, the rest is crap...or fps shooters".... which is pretty much BS. And this attitude is also a reason why historically third party games sell poor on Nintendo consoles.....
To go back to the point: WiiU+ x is good (x: Ps4,Xb1,Pc) XB1+Ps4 has little sense XB1+Pc has even less sense WiiU alone is pretty restrictive and you'll probably never play any future AAA on it.
@LDXD a proper Videocard cost almost as the entire console.... if you don't mind be updated with the last graphic (as me), but you wanna keep gaming for long, look at xbox360 and ps3, you can still play recent games after 8 years.... and in this 8 years you didn't spend anything in hardware more than the consolev itself.... now, which gaming pc you pay 350 - 400 $ can stand for 8 years untouched? And I also wouldn't forget the massive second-hand market on console games, plus the possibility of renting games....
I don't wanna say now console > pc, I just see both have pro and cons, and I personally find having a console more "easy" and long term than keeping my pc updated for games...
@argol228 cos then for the next 6-8 years of personal lifespan of my ps4 I don't have to bother anymore about "requirements", and get a laptop I need for work and nothing more. Plus, Ps4 exclusives are rarely on pc, while all the major pc games (excluding rts) normally comes to consoles....
@LDXD (love your avatar... ) I guess the difference is that Nintendo develop mainly in-house, while Sony (don't know Microsoft so I won't say anything) is more prone to 2nd parties.... And they also go and get exclusives from 3rd parties (see for example the incoming BloodBorne). In the last 2 years, you can also see they are nursing indie studios and supporting them developing exclusives for the console (No Man's Sky as example). So, IMHO, if Sony loose its 3rd parties,it still has enough 2nd studios and networks towards indies to keep providing a line-up... of course not qualitatively as high as Nintendo.
PS: Yesterday I finished Lords of The Fallen...... loved it till the end
@Zombie_Barioth Yep...and honestly sometimes sound more true on the Ninty side.... especially considering that half of its releases (present and future) on this console are platfomers....
@Darknyht I try to answer: Because in 3 more years your computer will be crap, while my ps4 will still be able to run all the newest releases... and no: 1) I don't have so much cash to buy a new computer every 3 years 2) I don't mind to run a 4k graphics on my 15" laptop screen
PS: Good luck running GTAV or Lords of the fallen on your 3 years computer now....

@Quorthon agree, xcx is even more niche than any Souls game.... I think Persona is much more mainstream rpg.
Mortal kombat... Cmon even my granny knew about that game

Re: I'll Take Zelda And Mario Over Sharing Call Of Duty With Sony And Microsoft, Says Reggie Fils-Aime
@LDXD @unrandomsam
Here is an average pc specs from 2006... let's say (even if not true) it cost as a ps3 (or xbox) at the time:
1gb RAM DDR400
CPU 2.8GHz
socket 775 800FSB mobo
128mb DDRII 450mhz Grfx Card @ 75hz 1024x786, AGP BUS
120gb Ultra-ATA HD
Now, would you say this pc, in 2014, will be able to run (anyhow) the most recent ps3/xbox360 releases?

So, IMHO, if Sony loose its 3rd parties,it still has enough 2nd studios and networks towards indies to keep providing a line-up... of course not qualitatively as high as Nintendo.
PS: Yesterday I finished Lords of The Fallen...... loved it till the end

@Zombie_Barioth Yep...and honestly sometimes sound more true on the Ninty side.... especially considering that half of its releases (present and future) on this console are platfomers....

Re: I'll Take Zelda And Mario Over Sharing Call Of Duty With Sony And Microsoft, Says Reggie Fils-Aime
@Darknyht I try to answer: Because in 3 more years your computer will be crap, while my ps4 will still be able to run all the newest releases... and no:
1) I don't have so much cash to buy a new computer every 3 years
2) I don't mind to run a 4k graphics on my 15" laptop screen
PS: Good luck running GTAV or Lords of the fallen on your 3 years computer now....

@Zombie_Barioth "Then, more 3rd person games. Last of Us, Uncharted, Bloodborne, Assassins Creed. They all play the same."
Play the same.... even worse
