I think this is a neat idea but I’m not sold on this game itself. Have Demon Throttle over at Special Reserve pre-ordered though. Same deal: never digital.
I actually love this! But I’m into DIY music and books so this is up my alley. A friend of mine runs a Noise record label and puts his and other artists’ stuff on all kinds of archaic formats. Cassettes are the default but he’s done 8-tracks, VHS, Betamax, floppy discs, you name it. He does the art and printing, and does limited runs that all eventually sell out. Each release is a like a bespoke art piece. This feels like that and is actually a cool step for the -art- of vijeo games.
Love this game and, more than anything Zelda-related, I want a big, difficult (at least in some endgame?) 2d Zelda. Preferably looking more like this than LA.
Also, feel obliged to say, landlording is mostly a scummy, I would argue nigh-immoral, way of making a living. Know that’s beside the point, but you all brought it up.
Played the hell outta Rebirth on 3DS, then the same for Afterbirth on Switch, which I have physically. Thought I was done with the game but I’m probably gonna get this physically for my Switch as well. Oh well.
Been waiting for this, as a Nintendo-only console holder and huge fan of 1 (N64) and 2 (Dreamcast) back in the day. Have 3 for GC but it’s not as good and I don’t really play it, but would play the heck outta this.
Not a bad haul, as far as games I’m interested in.
Hades physical- been waiting on this and am hyped to play this at last.
Mario Golf- not day one maybe but I’ve enjoyed this series since the N64.
Skyward Sword- never completed it on Wii, repetitive bosses being the culprit, but the dungeons ARE really good and I’ve heard it’s an important story etc so I’ll try again.
DC Super Hero Girls for my daughter’s 9th b-day, if the reviews are decent.
Project Triangle Strategy looks so so good to me. Loved FF tactics back in the day so I’m all about this.
Splatoon 3- my wife is a bigger Splatter than I and she is burnt out on 2 so this will be great.
Overall, satisfied. Think we can all assume there will be another direct by summer.
One of my very favorite shows. And I’m not big into most of the modern cartoons with adult followings. The sweet/sad vibe, ridiculous/profound plots, and beatnik/jive dialogue combine for a singular, sublime experience. Highly recommended.
I’ve tried most of the games WayForward made based on this and they’re mediocre to bad, except for Hey Ice King, Why’d You Steal our Garbage?! That’s a decent Zelda 2 homage. I don’t love Ubisoft but I’d be down with a AA or AAA Adventure Time game from them...
This review is not nonsense, to those claiming it is. I mean, it should be a 9 still, but I’ve always thought All Stars SMB felt off. And many agree. And while SMB3 feels fine, I too always preferred the art style of the NES version. That being said, glad this is available.
Weirdly, just Untitled Goose Game for me. I wrote it off as a Goat Simulator-type novelty until that 2-p announcement trailer. Now I think it looks like my daughter and I will have some silly fun with it.
Pikmin 3 is a great game but my wife was obsessed with it on Wii U for a spell so I’m good for now. Maybe in a couple years if they don’t come with 4 by then...
What I want, honestly, is exactly what’s been rumored. Maybe 64/Sunshine on one cart and Galaxy 1/2 on another. Do 3D World Deluxe too cuz it’s great in its own right and why not. But since you mention it remakes of Super Mario Land 1, 2 & 3 (Wario Land) on a cart would be awesome. As long as it doesn’t look anything like New Super Mario Bros.
@SkullDragr No disrespect, just a truth: if you don’t think the US was built on systemic racism, and that it’s maintained in many ways big and small, quiet and loud, to this day, you are some combination of profoundly ignorant and delusional.
Excited for SMM 2 although I have, and will have, so little time to give to it.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 because my wife might actually play co-op with me as she binged Hyrule Warriors back in the day and we're both, duh, on a bit of a Marvel kick.
Maybe Sonic Team Racing or Fire Emblem, but probably not for a while.
I'm interested in all of these. Have Jeopardy! For Wii U, wouldn't play WoF, but I want that cart. That board game collection looks good to play with my 6 year old. If they are $40 ea I will get them at some point.
This sounds great. Been really into Dead Cells (physical), but the permadeath is wearing on me. Avoiding digital right now and was bummed about both Hollow and Shovel Knights' physical release being next year. Will wait for this one too.
Have it digitally on 3DS and physically on Wii U, and I will get this new cart. Been wanting on my Switch as I haven't played Specter of Torment yet and I want all the great indie platformers on switch carts. Already have Runner 3, SteamWorld Dig 2, Yoku's Island Express, the End is Nigh and Dead Cells. This, Hollow Knight (which I'm holding out for to finally play), BloodStained next year. Hoping for Celeste, too.
Got the team-up of Dead Cells and Mario/Rabbids waiting to go. But first, my wife has to get through the Octo Expansion. I picked up Warioware Gold at the same time so I'd have something to play on my 3DS while she is at it. Both are super fun.
Bummed! Never played this one and have been hyped. The wife and kid leave town for a week during the summer. Was planning on this being my binge game. Will have to see...
This game caught my eye in the e-shop's coming soon section, and this review makes me really want it. Just sounds weird and enjoyable.
Also, this was a well-done review. Well posed thoughts, good information without too much information, and it captures what the game -feels- like. Kudos and more please. O and no grammar or spelling errors!
@gatorboi352 I hear you there, truly. I know that Nintendo at this point represents a small, if strong, part of gaming culture. If I had all the time I wanted to play games, I'd have a PS3/4. But as it is, I have 7-10 Wii u games I've barely touched/havent put in the console, I still haven't played Skyrim or Mario/Rabbids. I follow what's going on in the other ecosystems, just don't have time to engage. Family, work, other passions, hobbies, pastimes. There is a joke to be made about abandoning home and playing Bloodbourne til I'm a depressed slobby mess...
As a Nintendo-only gamer, and one who prefers to wait for retail versions, there is quite a bit for me on the way: Dark Souls- so excited to finally dive into this, Runner 3- loved the first two (heck, the wife fell for the second and almost completed it), SteamWorld Dig 2- been waiting for physical (it's been hard), Flipping Death, maybe Owl Boy. Fun times ahead.
So, Mr. Whitehead is a Cubs fan? That's my city, though as a south-sider, I'm bound to root for the White Sox foremost. But, go Cubbies!
I feel like I'm killing time til Odyssey drops.
Bought Stardew Valley and Mario and Rabbids but don't have the mental space to give to them. Wife is digging the Flame in the Flood. She got hooked on Don't Starve on the Wii U and has been asking for something similar.
Honestly I'm probably gonna go the pick-up-and-play route. Splatoon 2-just getting a handle on ranked mode, MK8D- still leaving peeps in my dust, Binding of Isaac- unlocking the last of the characters. There is a new Super Mario in 2 weeks! Woot to the woot woot.
Poor year for Wii u retail software (though I liked Color Splash more than expected and am loving Steamworld Heist, which I have on the Collection), but looking those lists over, both e-shops had good line-ups. Axiom Verge and Freeze Me, Gotcha Protectors, etc. kept me busy. Didn't buy a single 3DS retail game. Don't have time for RPG's though or I'd have been all over DQ7.
When they first announced the Wii u, the game I envisioned was a two-player co-op open world platformer. I called it Wario Bros. When you got a new hat it would open up new parts of the world, etc, but with each player on their own screen.
Of course, I didn't realize we would never get to use a second game pad.
If the Switch is the first in a new line of machines using the same os- say we get a portable-only, maybe dual-screened system next- a game like that would work. Or maybe it'll just be different sku's , one with the cradle, one not. I, for one, would buy both as quickly as i could afford to.
All this to say, dual screen gaming may not be dead, but is being rebooted to be more fluid and feasible.
Fairly disappointing direct for me. Fatal Frame coming west is cool, though not really my cup of meat. The two Wii U games I've been excited about most, Mario Maker and Yoshi, are later than I expected. N64 and DS VC is cool, but, in America at least, the launch line-up is underwhelming (will save my Yoshi enthusiasm for Woolly World and I just played through Mario 64). Will jump on DK64, MKDS and WarioWare:Touched when they arrive though. Most of the other stuff I didn't care much about, never got into Amiibo collecting, SMT x FE may turn out great, but we'll see...
Biggest win for me was MK8 dlc releasing early, with the 200cc added. I'm working on 3-starring Mirror Mode right now so that works out. Don't mind that they only showed one new course. I've bought it allready and don't mind being surprised.
Don't know enough to comment on his accomplishment; just reminds me how much Nintendo should be working on a remaster of this or Sunshine. I think its been insinuated enough, if not directly stated, that Mario will not get another platformer this gen, so why not Sunshine HD? If they can get it out by Christmas it would soften the blow of Zelda slipping to next year. And we know nothing really about N's 3DS line-up for the second half of the year.
Love this series; the first I probably love best. Played TTYD twice through so I wouldn't be terribly excited for this. Probably my most dreamed-of Wii U game, aside from an open-world 3D Mario platformer, is a follow-up to the first two Paper Mario's. Partners, badges, chapters, and a pit of 450 trials!
Adam Sandler and Kevin James equal instant pass for me, despite my obvious affection for the material. It's like that Solomon Kane movie on Netflix: love the character, knew it'd be a trrreble movie. Adam Sandler is only watchable when the filmmaker knows how to use his persona interestingly. Kevin James is, as said above, really, just offensive.
@erv Seems like your post struck a chord with the 30-plus, financially stable element of the community. I only have a Wii U and 3DS, no gaming PC, PS or anything else, and I have way more games than I could possibly find time to play. My wife is taking our daughter across the state to visit her family soon and I was thinking about a new game to pick up for the occasion, then I thought, 'Still have Tropical Freeze to beat/work on the collectibles, ditto Captain Toad, I've barely touched Smash Wii U, Arkhym City, Lego City Undercover, Child of Light, Guacamelee, Azure Striker Gunvolt, Yumi's Odd Odyssey and the Wonderful 101, not to mention pick-up-and-play/score-chase games like MK8, 3d Fantasy Zone, Olli Olli etc, that I'll keep coming back to.' First World Issues, but in short, yeah, don't NEED more games. It's the collector in me that wants them.
Steamworld Heist is my vote. But Don't Starve, the Swindle, Runbow and Box Boy are all right behind. Thought Risky's Revenge was overrated. Wife loved Trine 2 and Swords and Soldiers, so we'll get those too...
@Nintenjoe64 Opinions and all, i get it, but... No way. I love fantasy settings, too. But the controls are way too cumbersome to be compared to the elegant beauty of Tropical Freeze or Rayman Legends. Heck, I'll take NSMBU over Trine 2, despite it's at times derivative gameplay and barely HD graphics. And, as @unrandomsam pointed out (as he does at every opportunity), the lack of 60 fps really hurts any platformer.
Re: Everyone stating opinions on potential DLC characters: To round out third parties important to Nintendo: Simon, or any other, Belmont (a whip and all those sub-weapons would make a fun character i think), Bomberman, and why not Rayman, even though this is a fake and Ubisoft has been iffy to Nintendo.
@TrueWiiMaster Agree with everything you say. Mario 64 DS is largely unplayable and, weirdly, uglier than the original. But Sunshine HD would be the bee's knees.
@EarthboundBenjy: While I, and I imagine most others, wouldn't be opposed to that, I'd rather see a new installment using the ALBW engine. I love the 2D Zeldas just a little more than the 3D ones. And anyway, the handhelds are the place for those these days. I just want a bigger, more difficult 2D Zelda (I'm sick of never dying in the recent entries) with plenty of optional mini-dungeons and such.
@Quorthon: I too desire Super Mario 64 3D, recognizing that it was remade last gen. I found that unplayable, even on the 3DS, because it wasn't programmed with analogue controls, a neccesary part of that game.
Other remakes that I'd like/would make sense: Sunshine HD, F-Zero X 3D, or GX HD, Metroid 2 remake for 3DS. I know many see remakes as a waste, but I think it's a way to cherish all the classic software that N has produced over the years, bring them to the young 'uns who can't abide by b&w or N64 polygons, etc.

@Erigen Agreed! Love HB and the Mignolaverse as well as a good rouge-lite but I’ll have to see how this pans out.

I love Hellboy so very much but this doesn’t seem promising. So close to launch and that’s the best they have to show?
Re: Feature: That Time Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Made Mario Bros. Go Full Inception
Tons of brilliant ideas, top shelf art design. Unfortunately so hand-holdy and ‘stop to learn this new mechanic’ that it feels like a slog.

Cuphead DLC so they release the physical edition so I can finally play this game.
Spelunky 1/2.
Sports Story.

Re: Eiji Aonuma Admits That Remakes Such as Majora's Mask 3D Can Be a Painful Process
Re: Nintendo Looking To Offer Affordable Smartphone-Style Games And Remakes Of Past Classics On 3DS
