The final chapter in The Binding of Isaac saga is almost here, and it's getting a physical release on Switch. The horror roguelike takes inspiration from the biblical story in which Abraham is asked by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac, with the mother of similarly-named Isaac attempting to sacrifice him as a symbol of her faith. Isaac escapes into the monster-filled basement, and thus the game begins, with the sobbing Isaac taking on hordes of biblical-themed demons in a Zelda-like dungeon.
The Binding of Isaac: Repentance will add two new playable characters, 130+ new items, 100+ new enemies, 25+ new bosses, and a new alternate path with new chapters, a new final boss, and a new ending. That's a lot of news!
Alongside all the extra items and bosses, Repentance will also add graphical improvements, gameplay updates, and changes to the game's balance. Creator Edmund McMillen called it the "best version of Isaac".
The game has no official release date, instead getting a release window of "Q3 2021" - that's sometime between July and September - although the PC version will come out on Steam on the 31st March. However, there will be no complete list of the game's features, since the developers want to "maximize player enjoyment and preserve the element of surprise as much as possible."
If you already own one of The Binding Of Isaac's many different forms (Rebirth, Afterbirth, the original...) will you also be grabbing this one? Let us know below!

Really looking forward to this, I’ll be grabbing it on Steam and hopefully I can spend another 700 hours on it!
That's some good news! I'll probably wait till the switch release to play it handheld.
I’ve always heard good things about these games, but I’ve never got around to play them. Maybe one day.
The Binding Of Isaac is such a special game to me. I can't wait for this, beyond excited!
It that a dlc for Afterbirth or a new game?
I love roguelikes, but I've always been a little confused by this series. This looks like a sequel, but what about the others? Are rebirth and afterbirth remakes of the original, and if that's the case then which one should I play to get ready for repentence?
Played the hell outta Rebirth on 3DS, then the same for Afterbirth on Switch, which I have physically. Thought I was done with the game but I’m probably gonna get this physically for my Switch as well. Oh well.
OF COURSE I'LL BE GETTINGVTHIS, CANT WAIT!!
My 2nd most anticipated game of 2021, only after Hollow Knight Silksong.
I wish the physical version has all the content prior to Repentance, and doesn’t need any future updates or fixes, I applaud team cherry for waiting for years to release the physical version of Hollow Knight only after they were done with all updates and DLCs.
Nicalis took so long to release the last title in the UK that I gave up and ended importing it. So unless they announce it and not wait like a year..........and because I brought the US version I cant simply buy it as DLC ........sure I could open an US account but all for one game........
I have an unopened copy of afterbirth+ for switch. I guess it's time to sell it!
700h+ baby ! best game ever
Overpriced. Probably wont go on sale for much either. Been waiting for a good sale on Afterbirth+ for years and I missed the single good one that was on sale for like a day.
@Ardisan everything, but overpriced. I happen to own a great collection of games on my nintendo systems yet I spent 700h+ on switch and 700h+ on 3ds playing Isaac. It worth every single penny and every single minute of my time.
@Boogaloo_Jenkins @Isaix Rebirth is a remake of the original. Afterbirth and Repentance are DLCs.
@Friscobay Sorry I don't have dispensable funds like you, Mr. "I love the series so id probably buy it at $120, hehehe ".
Binding of Isaac: Rebirth has been my go-to game (and I'm almost ashamed to say that I've played it daily) since 2014, so of course I'm up for this. I've already played over 1000 hours across PS4, Vita and Switch, so I'm already too far gone anyway. 😆
Could never understand the love affair some people have with this.
I loved Afterbirth and was lucky enough to be randomly given an eShop download code for the game on the day of it’s release. However, after around 80+ hours of dungeon crawling enjoyment, I’ve fallen off this one since the release of Dead Cells and, more recently, the fabulous Hades. After reading this article though, I may just dive back in for a run or two.
If any of you want to be familiar with Repentance why not try playing the Antibirth mod, the source material of the upcoming DLC.
@everynowandben Ah, thanks for the heads up! Looks like I won't have to play anything before snagging this bad boy up
Better come with stickers like after birth did
Nice! Physical copies were too expensive, I will buy this.
I put 1000+ hours into Afterbirth+ on Switch but I haven't played it for probably almost a couple of years now so it'll be nice and fresh again when this releases, looking forward to it. Might consider going digital this time as my Afterbirth+ cartridge is super warm out from swapping it in and out so much.
So, afterlife, rebirth, are the same game right? Not sequels. I was looking foward to get a good deal for the already available physical version on switch, but if this repetentance is the core game plus extras i glad i didnt find any.
Binding of Isaac Rebirth is $15 on PSN and Xbox regular price. $40 on Switch. Yikes, that's $25 more.
What is this, exactly? Another add-on with like a hundred more items again?
I've enjoyed the series a lot but all these various versions of it confuse me. I believe I have Afterbirth+ on Steam but I couldn't for the life of me tell you the difference between that and the original.
Hope this is the last time this game gets another enhanced remake. Rather they just be like Yacht Club and up the asking price with every new release, but for early adopters give them the content for free. But what do I know, I can tell just by this comment section that a lot of folks are going to double dip or more with this game regardless so Nicalis is raking in free money.
Literally best news ever!
Hopefully it will be tweaked by the time it comes to switch, because reviews of the steam version have been hit and miss. Isaac deserves to go out in style.
I really hope Afterbirth+ save files carry over. I have nearly 3000 hours on the Switch version and I don’t want to have to unlock that content all over again.
@Ardisan they're not seperate games, they're dlc, and they went on sale not long ago for 50% off
Does anyone know if save files will carry over or if we will be able to purchase this like dlc? I love this game, but would rather not start over with endings/unlockables unless I have to.
Welp, looks like the pre-orders have been cancelled! Hopefully this still comes out on Switch by next month!
