Pixels is set to be a comedy blockbuster this Summer, and has naturally got fans of gaming - particularly those with a fondness for retro - rather excited. With a big-hitting cast - albeit including the marmite-esque Adam Sandler - it'll be heavily publicised by Sony Pictures as the film to see in a few months.
It's pretty good publicity for Nintendo and its allies at Bandai Namco, too, with Donkey Kong and Pac-Man being among the most significant 'invading' characters. Seeing pixel representations of those characters on the big screen should be fun, and we'll bet good money that Nintendo will tie-in some marketing for titles like Super Smash Bros. when the film arrives.
After some teasers and early looks we now have a new extended trailer, too, which shows more of the plot and some of the set-pieces. We think this looks pretty darn entertaining, but check it out and let us know what you think.

Hmmm... I will wait for "Tron 3" instead, thanks.
Technically speaking, the film predominantly features voxels.
I think this looks like it could actually be good
Note: I do however think the way the pixels looked in the original short was a bit more authentic to the classic pixel look and style (especially if you compare the two versions of Donkey Kong): http://patrick-jean.allo-infopc.com/archives/portfolio/pixels-7
@Shiryu After Tron 2... I is not excited for Tron 3.
@RupeeClock True dat.
Adam Sandler vs. Donkey Kong. A must see...
I only see it if Iwata is shown being chased by Pac-Man. Otherwise, Adam Sandler is just......meh.....
This looks really awful.
I have noticed something: doesn't this movie make the video game look bad?
I'm gonna watch this with my kid (if it's for kids and up) because it features one or two of my favorite videogame characters regardless of the reviews. Movie reviews suck anyway because they rate movies if it's an Oscar-worthy or not regardless if it's fun or fulfilling. Plus I'm not jumping on the Sandler hate bandwagon like most of the internet do. ('can't view the video for some reason).
That actually looks pretty fun. If DK is featured, wonder if jumpman/Mario is also featured.
I honestly think it COULD be good...it's just some of the casting decisions that worry me...like Adam Sandler.
I've lost interest in Adam Sandler's films, but that scene with Pac-Man made me laugh so hard! I might see this with a buddy.
Not sure if worth a cinema watch really.
Iwatani makes a guest appearance!... Yeah, it's not the real guy. I know.
Looks silly, but fun!
I think this looks like a fun movie to see with some buddies.Though,it still reminds me an awful a lot of Anthology of Interest II from Futurama.Plus Adam Sandler is in it(but thank God he doesn't seem to have any role in the production in the movie).
@Azooooz Because the movie itself is doomed to be bad.
Im torn, on the one hand I like the premise and actually cant believe it hssnt been done before (so it probably has) but it also looks like a fake Funny or Die trailer for s movie called "When Videogames Attack" which brings When Mars Attacks to mind, which isnt good.
Ghostsbustets meets ID4 and Men in Black. Could be good, could be dreck. Since I have 2 sons and family movies are few and far between we may give this a shot. My sons havent seen any of the 3 movies referenced above, and not a single Adam Sandler movie either, so they may like it. I hear some people even liked the new Star Wars movies, as hard as that is to believe. Ive only ever liked Star Wars myself.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this film.
Wow! An Adam Sandler movie with video games involved! This is gonna be... not a great movie, is it...?
Showed the trailer to my 10 year old son who said "That looks hilarious."
He then added:
"Nintendo characters trying to kill everybody. How can that NOT be good?"
I think I've found the target audience, and it ain't us.
I don't expect this to be a good movie by any means, but it will still be a lot of fun to watch.
Movie trailers are like game demos to me: they either confirm I want it or put me off entirely.
This one sounds like the latter to me. Only thing I like is the funny twist to the cliched "US is doomed" scenario.
@rjejr
Your Mars Attack comparison seems valid. So the target audience is kids who most likely never played these games? Maybe to have parents showing the real games to them after the credits roll?
P.S. you nailed the company's name again
well this is going to be so bad that I think I might just watch it.
They stole a great Futurama segment to make a crappy-looking movie. Thanks, Adam Sandler. You're typical 12-year-old audience has no idea what you're referencing.
That's not even the real Toru Iwatani
@sinalefa - "So the target audience is kids who most likely never played these games?"
That's probably the best observation of the day. Though when I told my kid the giant black spaceship looked like the one from "Galaxian" that shoots down a ray and captures your ship he looked at me and said "Do you mean "Galaga"? He then explained to me there's a Galaga spaceship in SSBU, I'm guessing it's an assist trophy. (I still haven't played the game due to the lack of separate profile save points.).
So no, my kid hasn't played any of these, but he knows things.
Looks like it could be better than a lot of action comedies in recent years (eg: The Watch), but I'm still cautious.
looks rightfully terrible. Poor DK
@sinalefa - PS to your PS - I only typed it correctly b/c I didn't want it to reflect poorly on my son as I used quotations. I don't care too much what people think about my typing abilities, or lack thereof, but I'm not going to risk portraying my son in a poor light. Truth.
"We think this looks pretty darn entertaining"
I think you must have posted the wrong link.
I find Kevin James more offensive than Adam Sandler.
Every morning Kevin James wakes up and thanks God for taking Chris Farley's life, thus allowing him to have a career.
Futurama did it better.
Looks like it could be fun,I'll watch it
Looks decent but seems too much like the Futurama episode except with Pac-Man as a bad guy this time.
ends up reading a lot of the Youtube comments People still complain too much.
I will celebrate my 77th birthday this summer by enjoying this movie, for sure! A lot safer than falling off a mountain and breaking an ankle like I did when celebrating my 75th! Onward 'Fantasy Life'!
Alright i'll bite i'll watch it.Looks interesting and fun,i hope they didn't use all the funny parts in this trailer.
It's an interesting idea, though I can't say much as it's just a trailer...
Will definitely say that I was intrigued and then Adam Sandler popped up saying "Pac-Man's a baaaad guuy?" and then I went "..Oh.."
Oh no you don't, Sandler.
Adam Sandler and Kevin James equal instant pass for me, despite my obvious affection for the material. It's like that Solomon Kane movie on Netflix: love the character, knew it'd be a trrreble movie. Adam Sandler is only watchable when the filmmaker knows how to use his persona interestingly. Kevin James is, as said above, really, just offensive.
Woah! This movie looks amazing!!
@Sanya
Stay away from YouTube commentors. They'll find every way to complain about just about anything, and if you disagree with them then you are a mother effer.
I like the concept a lot. But, as many people have pointed out, Adam Sandler is heavily involved with this and he hasn't made a good movie for over 15 years. I think I'll just watch the Futurama episode where New New York is invaded by Nintenduu 64. Same concept, more likable characters!
Shame on all of the negative comments on this movie. Just because some people are in there that you don't like doesn't mean the movie will be bad. :/
Not every film Adam Sandler has starred in has been terrible so this film could be good but I will keep my expectations nice and low!.
I dunno. I'm pretty hyped for this.
Please don't adventise your blog here.- MorphMarron
This or Wreck-It-Ralph??? Hmmm...Wreck-It-Ralph it is!!!
@rjejr "Nintendo Characters trying to kill everybody, how can that not be good?"
Okay, that got me. That's a funny comment right there.
Ummmm, what? I'm not one to pay attention to actors but even I know that all those main characters are people who always star as the joke/loser character in all their movies. Like, isn't that one guy the one from the mall cop movies? And that other one the guy in all those lame Christmas movies?
@Plateface I agree completely nonsense
@MasterBlaster - "Every morning Kevin James wakes up and thanks God for taking Chris Farley's life, thus allowing him to have a career.
And history repeats itself, Chris Farley used to say the same thing about John Belushi.
@Zelda64L - He's too young to know who Adam Sandler and Kevin James are and he's never seen Ghostbusters, and I think it's VERY obvious this movie is trying to be this generations Ghosbusters. Heck they should have just called it "Ghostbusters" and been done w/ it Hollywood let Marky Mark play Charlton Heston, nothing matters after that.
Sandler should have just stopped once the 90s were over ...
Looks like someone has seen Wreck-It Ralph!
Holy cow, that's awesome! 100x better than Wreck It Ralph even (which was also awesome)
Too bad the video games they're referencing have to be 30 years old just so everyone recognises what they are. It's a movie about games, but not for gamers.
@TeeJay - Yeah, and that guy with the beard who plays that really annoying guy on Game of Thrones that everyone loves for no real reason.
Seems like more fun than Wreck it Ralph!
This looks so bad
Was that...Lord Tyrion?! So Nintendo didn't want Mario in Wreck it Ralph, but Donkey Kong....is in a Sony movie?! It's happening....
No seriously, this could be fun. As for some of the human-actors, I am not sure.
Nope, not looking good.
